Spider-Man Fairy Tales #1
2007-05-11 01:05:41
At first I thought this was a real corny idea. After looking at the recent art and spin on the fairy tales, it looks like a great venture. Spider -Man Fairy Tales #1 is on sale May 30th 2007. Isn’t everything in life better with a little bit of Spider-Man? Fans will find out the answer this May when Spider-Man Fairy Tales #1 arrives in store, presenting a modern spin on classic myths. Written by C.B Cebulski (the man behind the hit series Loners), with art by Ricardo Tercio, Spider-Man Fairy Tales #1 tells the story of Little Red Riding Hood like you’ve never seen before! "Of course, I’m biased when talking about any book I work on, but I could not be happier with the way Spider-Man Fairy Tales has turned out," said Cebulski. "The fact that we’ve been able to build on the Fairy Tales brand, now incorporating Spider-Man, Marvel most popular franchise, has been a blast! It’s always fun finding and establishing the connectio

Travels of Thelonious (Fog Mound)
2007-05-10 18:24:08
Thelonious Chipmunk is a Talker — an animal who has inherited the gift of language from his ancestors — and he, for one, believes in humans. Who else could have made the old paper postcard he treasures? Who else could have built the tall building shown on the postcard? His desire to know more about the humans is fulfilled in a surprising and dangerous way when Thelonious is swept down the river into a strange new world — a world of architectural ruins and puzzling artifacts, where gangs and warlords prowl amongst the crumbling remains of civilization. With three new companions — a bear, a porcupine, and a small brown lizard — Thelonious embarks on a search for the far-off Fog Mound. It is a journey that becomes nothing less than a quest to uncover the secrets of Earth’s past.

Building Literacy Connections with Graphic Novels: Page by Page, Panel by Panel
2007-05-10 17:47:17
As teachers, we’re always looking for new ways to help our students engage with texts. James Bucky Carter and the contributors to this collection have found an effective approach: use graphic novels! Carter and his contributors tap into the growing popularity of graphic novels in this one-of-a-kind guidebook. Each chapter presents practical suggestions for the classroom as it pairs a graphic novel with a more traditional text or examines connections between multiple sources. Some of the pairings include The Scarlet Letter and Katherine Arnoldi’s The Amazing "True" Story of a Teenage Single Mom; Oliver Twist and Will Eisner’s Fagin the Jew; Young adult literature and Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis; Dante’s Inferno and an X-Men story; classic fantasies (Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz, and Alice in Wonderland) and Farel Dalrymple’s Pop Gun War; traditional and graphic novel versions of Beowulf. These creative pairings open up a do

The Complete Peanuts 1963-1964
2007-05-10 17:39:29
Spring brings May flowers and Peanuts . Fantagraphics once again releases their run of Peanuts with an intro by animator Bill Melendez. This volume has strips that were never printed before. A real beauty to have in any showcase. As it happens, this volume is particularly rich in never-before-reprinted strips: Over 150 (more than one fifth of the book!) have never seen the light of day since their original appearance over 40 years ago, so this will be a trove of undiscovered treasures even for avid Peanuts collectors. These "lost" strips include Linus making a near-successful run for class president that is ultimately derailed by his religious beliefs (two words: "great" and "pumpkin"), and Snoopy getting involved with a group of politically fanatical birds. One wonders: Was it the political edge in these stories that got them consigned to oblivion for so long? Also worthy of note is an extended, never-reprinted sequence in which Snoopy gets ill an

The Art of Bee Movie
2007-05-18 15:48:03
Jerry Beck of Cartoon Brew brings us this September a great book, The Art of Bee Movie . I am a big fan of these books, you get to see the origins of character sketches and wonder what would be if they used different ideas. It’s an amazing process from start to finish. The Art of Monsters, Inc. was one of those books that had scads of conceptual ideas that never made it to the screen but was a treat for any artist who builds complex characters to be transpired to the screen.sandbox world, tony medeiros

Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood
2007-05-18 14:27:46
I just wanted to welcome Jeremiah McNichols of Z Recommends as a regular contributor to Sandbox World.  It is with pleasure that we include him in our stable.  Please check out his site Z Recommends, it’s a great site for young kids and parents alike. In Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood , comic artist Marjane Satrapi chronicled growing up in a liberal family in Islamic Iran in a way that captured the attention and interest of American readers. The simple black-and-white illustrations focused reader attention on a compelling but familiar narrative, while the details of life under the religious government brought home the fear and confusion that impact family life and personal development in repressive societies. Satrapi’s childhood embrace of artifacts of Western culture as symbols of freedom (rebellious music, self-expression through dress, and everything else American teenagers use to declare their inner turmoil) make Persepolis the perfect

Treasure Island (Manga Literary Classics series)
2007-05-18 02:56:24
Manga is showing up all over the place. Kids are hanging out at bookstores at the manga sections.  What a better way than to bring the classics into manga form. Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island just got manga-fied and he has great company as YoungJin Singapore Pte. Ltd. (Y.Kids) is printing a wealth of classics down the line. Young stowaway Jim Hawkins throws in his lot with pirates Black Dog, Blind Pew, and the unforgettable Long John Silver in this manga-style retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic adventure story. Jim, overly romantic about life on the high seas, is unprepared for the frightening events ahead, including mutiny and an armed battle that poses a grim dilemma: should his loyalty lie with Captain Smollett or Long John Silver? Combining the exciting graphics of manga style with classic stories, these beloved works by literary icons are accessible and entertaining to

Things Just Get Away From You
2007-05-18 01:44:24
Blessed with a lovely bouncy, rubbery SpongeBob SquarePants-y style, and beloved by fellow cartoonists like Seth and Chris Ware, cartoonist and animator Walt Holcombe tells wildly imaginative stories of love gained and (often) lost. Things Just Get Away From You collects all of Holcombe’s late-1990s comics work, with a bonus new story, "Hails at Sea," thrown in for good measure. Featuring: a Persian king on a quest for love accompanied by his talking camel; an unlikely friendship between a cynical bug and a lonely snail; a musical-writing whaling captain with some dangerous relationship baggage; a deadly mountain dogfight between ex-lovers over a champion show cat; and a barrel-wearing hobo. sandbox world, tony medeiros

A spin-off of the popular ‘Shazam!’ series (starring Captain Marvel), “The Secrets of Isis” became one of the most popular shows in the all-important block of Saturday morning programming. As a character, Isis herself was revolutionary: she was the first live-action female super-heroine on Saturday mornings. Soaring as the falcon soars, running with the speed of gazelles, the transformed Andrea fights crime and rights wrongs in addition to imparting the wisdom of the ages. Her closest friends, fellow teacher Rick Mason (Brian Cutler) and students Cindy Lee (Joanna Pang) and Renee Carrol (Ronalda Douglas) are unaware of her secret identity and mystical powers… the only one who knows the truth is her pet crow, Tut! I got my little sandbox shovel and dug with all my might and found this classic from BBC called Roobarb and Custard  written by Grange Calveley and animated by Bob Godfrey. Thirty 5 minutes long episodes were made, and each one ran before the news in England in 1974.  Roobard was a clever dog who always found a way to get into trouble and was mocked by Custard the cat from next door.
