The most pierced woman in the world
2007-04-20 12:01:26
Elaine Davidson is a Brazilian former nurse which is again on the Guiness Book for breaking the record of body piercings: 3920. In her site she says she “also walks on beds of nails, fire and bits of glass, and holds a black belt in Judo which she earned in Japan” (no need for a joke here). She also runs a shop called Tropical Rainbow Paradise Shop. Yep, we have lots of rainbows over here in Brazil. “At least she doesn’t shot 32 colleagues as American are keen to do”, said a (very cynic) friend of mine. Hey, man, this time the “American” was a South-Korean. Click on the pics to a larger version. Thanks, Solon. © Rico Ferrari on Bizarre Brazil, 2007. | Permalink See more posts in the category Oddities, Brazil viewed by foreigners, Bizarre, People, Women.

The minister on pot
2007-04-19 12:00:34
Gilberto Gil is a musician (a reasonable one, for my taste) and a politician (a bad one, in the same criteria) and he was a heavy user of pot for a long while, as he stated in an interview a while ago. Now he’s the head of Culture Ministry, and responsible for a budget of 0.5% or so of the GDP. I don’t remember what the subject of this post was, but I remember that it had a video and, voilà, it’s bellow. If you can hmm, hmm, hmm, help me, please. © Rico Ferrari on Bizarre Brazil, 2007. | Permalink See more posts in the category Oddities, Videos, Culture, Humor, People, Brazil in the news.

The stone curse
2007-04-18 12:00:00
Around 70 percent Brazilians are catholics, but there are some important minority religions in the country. There’s also a Jewish minority, few Muslims, protestants of various denominations and Black African cults (namely Umbanda, Quimbanda and Candomble). This video shows a (fake) session of Candomble exorcism in which the priest is trying to save his client from the Stone Curse (whatever it really mean).   YouTube - click here if you can't see the video. Link © Rico Ferrari on Bizarre Brazil, 2007. | Permalink See more posts in the category Humor, Bizarre, Religion.

Gigi, a Bizarre Dancer
2007-04-17 16:55:01
Brazilians, as most Western citizens, have a strange urge to be famous - even in an odd way. The increasing numbers of internet access in some society layers and the web 2.0 phenomena make us, once in a while, find some Brazilians exposing themselves in a bizarre manner. Below you can see Gigi, the latest example of how Brazilians enjoy mockering. This video has been seen for more than 100,000 people on Internet. 507 Years Later
2007-04-22 06:10:09
Once upon a time, 185,055 days ago a huge fleet boarded on Brazilian coast, where now it is Bahia state. Huge fleet by 16th century standards, of course, as the fleet was about mere 13 sail ships. The video bellow is an 50’s TV cartoon ad from Varig, the once proud Brazilian air company who filled bankruptcy last year. The ad shows Cabral, the admiral of the fleet who discovered Brazil and also shows how the Portuguese miss their homeland (there was an important minority of Portuguese migrants who fled Salazar’s dictatorship in the 50’s). YouTube - click here if you can't see the video. Link See in the map where is Bahia. For comparison, Sao Paulo is here and Rio de Janeiro here. And some guy made this excellent and freaky video with images illustrating the national anthem. Well, I’m not properly the patriot type, but I liked the version (wait until the people start to sing before chose to close the video). (more…) © Rico Ferrari on Biz

Tiradentes, The Tooth Puller
2007-04-21 13:00:23
Tiradentes was a low rank officer from the Portuguese army who was one of the (only falling) heads of a independence rebellion in the eighteenth century in what is now Minas Gerais state. He was born and raised in Brazil, and was what the British called “a colonial” in their own colonies in 19th century. His name means “tooth puller” and that was his profession in the army. Dentistry was a much simpler job back in those days. He was executed - Roman style, his body was broken apiece, his home destroyed, his gardens covered with salt - in April 21, 1792, after a 3 years long trial. He’s considered an Independence martyr (Brazil would get rid of Portugal rule only in 1822) and the day of his death is a national holiday. Confusions between his figure and that of Christ are common between the children, as Tiradentes is depicted much like the Nazarene. He was hanged, cut in pieces and cursed for all eternity - and so on - 215 years ago. As you can see, the Por

Carnival in Brazil - Porto Alegre
2007-04-29 04:57:56
Somedays ago I’ve wrote a small rant about Porto Alegre, my southern hometown, and about Olinda’s Carnival in comparison with that from Rio de Janeiro. So now it’s time to show some pics from Porto Alegre ’s brancaleone Carnival. Just to contextualize: Porto Alegre (map) is the southern state capital town where the commie World Social Forum - an anti-globalization, anti-Davos Forum, semi-Luddite congregation of all kind of leftists (and the Brazil ian LefThieves) - was held from 2001 to 2005. Porto Alegre is also famous for… Well… actually nothing, but don’t tell them or they’ll be very angry at you (sorry, Solon, I can’t resist). Porto Alegre is not particularly famous by its Carnival, but it’s pretty decent in terms of getting the cheap kind of fun you get in Samba Carnivals, comparing to other places in Brazil. It’s also far more secure then a Samba Carnival in Rio or Sao Paulo, although way small. Bellow you can see

the Erotic minister
2007-04-26 15:59:56
Eros Grau is a lawyer, appointed by the President to the Supreme Court in 2004. He’s also a professor at the University of Sao Paulo and wrote some books on law interpretation and the Constitution. And this week, he became a mocking target for many people in Brasilia due to his first fiction novel (the title can be translated as either “Triangle at the Point” or “Triangle Well Done”, as in a well done beef), which contains some rather (porno)graphic passages. First it was Monica Bergamo, a columnist at Folha de S. Paulo, who published a couple of highlits from the Minister’s book: They both entered the house in search of something. Xavier hugged her, joined his body with hers and she felt his taut penis. Took it out and asked her to grab it. It didn’t take more than two or three seconds, grabbed and released, as if touching a red-hot iron - it was, in fact, a red-hot iron. A friend, coming back from her honeymoon, told her that, when it got ins
