Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate
2007-12-13 11:16:00
The RC for SP1 of Vista has been released today.  I wont bother with the RC, but am looking forward to getting the final SP. Lots of people are talking about the compatibility issues with Vista, and how the RC doesn't really fix many.  I haven't had issues with that (though I am sure they exist).  My main issue has been performance with basic tasks.  Specifically copy/extracting files and hibernate. CF Contractor Needed
2007-12-13 09:00:00
A client of ours is looking for a CF Contractor for part of a project we are too busy to handle.  They are a good client to work with, so if your fit their needs (see below) give them a shout.  To be clear, the project will be using our CMS, however there are many sections of the site where they need cool CF custom work done.  You don't need to worry much about the CMS integration as it is incredibly easy.  Also, while onsite is preferred the client is willing to consider offsite.  From what I am told the work will begin soon and storyboards etc. have already been developed. Update: I do encourage you to apply, even if you don't live in Chicago or know the CMS.  While that is preferred having options is even more preferable! [More]

Calling all ColdFusion Developers in Seacoast of New Hampshire
2007-12-11 13:24:00
At flex camp (which was great) last Friday I ran into a few people who live in the Seacoast of New Hampshire (or on the border in Main and Massachusetts) and do ColdFusion development.  It is always nice to meet new CF people and it surprised me that there were so many I hadn't known about right here in my back yard.  If I had been thinking I would have gotten your business cards so we could continue to network later. So this is a quick call to all you CF'ers.  How many of you are out there and in the Seacoast area?  Would it make sense to try to organize a CF meet 'n drink some night to all get together say hi and so forth?  I am all about organizing stuff like that if enough people would be interested. Our ColdFusion CMS, Savvy Content Manager has won best Commercial CF App in the 2007 CFeMmys. This has been a great year for Savvy and myself and I am really looking forward to 2008.  A great big thank you to those that voted for us, and also to Todd Sharp, who organized the nominations and voting process.   Also a big thumbs up to all those nominated.  There were some difficult decisions to be made when I voted.  So many good projects, resources and blogs these days.  Keep it up!

New Atlanta Announces Free Open Source BlueDragon
2008-03-10 08:57:00
Some interesting news this morning.  On a list I read someone had posted a link to an announcement regarding New Atlanta open-sourcing their J2EE server. More specifically creating an edition that will be open-sourced.  I thought that posting it must have been a mistake as the date on it was for Wednesday, and I would assume that they were going to wait until CFUnited Europe to make the announcement.  Then Mark Dew noticed that Vince Bonfanti blogged on it today, which confirms that New Atlanta wanted the news out before the conference.  Their FAQ is a bit light, and suggests that more details will be available, as well as the actual open source software by CFUnited in D.C. apple shows it's crappy side - explaining no flash on iphone
2008-03-06 19:28:00
I was just commenting on Tech crunch regarding apples release of the iphone SDK.  One thing first:  Iphone is cool tech.  Its sexy, and easy to use.  It offers little new, but its new version might.  That said... To sum up, apple said:  'if you want to sell your app on the iphone, you must sell through itunes, and apple will take 30% fee for doing the sale processing for you'. [More]

cf.Objective() is where it's at.
2008-03-04 12:04:00
I will probably doing a few of these themed images.  I am taking the photos from flickr, so if you put them up and creative commons, they are fair game.  Thanks to GrandpaDoug for this photo.  Make your own with my image generator.  This page has the full size LOLcf.Objective image. In this image I see Mark Drew and Simon Horwith, not sure who the other person is.  If someone comments with his name I will update. [More]

I am pleased to release my latest project... stufficanfitinmymouth.com. It isn't as naughty as it sounds, rather it is a fun site where you can upload photos, manipulate them, make funny things and save them and share with friends.  You can even take those images and create postage stamps from them (via 3rd party). 2008-02-26 07:09:00
Yesterday we officially released Savvy Content Manager 4.5.  We have had it running on several clients sites and people seem to be pretty pleased with the new functionality.  Now I can finally get to answering some emails I have been ignoring too long, organizing a local ColdFusion group and other fun stuff.  Oh, and starting on Savvy CM 5. :-) New video tutorials are posted here. AIR VS Silverlight?
2008-02-26 07:04:00
Ok, I admit I am not very educated on Silverlight, but isn't this Techcrunch blog post comparing two different kinds of products?  I would think Silverlight VS Flex or Flash, but AIR?  Adobe flew the guy out to the release event... you would think he knew the difference after that.  Or if I am wrong maybe Adobe should have flown me out so I would know the difference :-) [More]

Promoting ColdFusion
2008-02-25 15:42:00
These videos have nothing to do with ColdFusion , however can you imagine spoof videos done to promote ColdFusion based on this style?  If I had any video talent I would sooo do this.  Anyone? [More]

ImageDrawText Coordinates
2008-02-25 07:35:00
This was probably clear to other people, but the coordinates for ImageDrawText were a bit counter intuitive for me.  I expected that drawing text to 0,0 would have my text shown fully at the top left of the image. Point 0,0 would be the top and left point of my text.  However the text is rendered from the bottom, left point of your text area.  Thus setting coordinate 0,0 would usually result in most of the text being drawn above canvas.  So if you want your text to show up fully in the top left area, simply make an offset the size of the font size (default of 10). NH Adobe User Group Meeting - Monday
2008-02-22 08:09:00
I meant to blog about this before (details below).  I am not privy to what the special live event will be sharing, but I have my guesses.  I suspect this is happening at user group's around the country, so if you haven't already look up a group near you and check it out. Site Note: Faye from NH group mentioned to me that RSVP'ing is a good thing.  They buy food and such and it helps if they know how many are coming. If your heading to the NH group, I will see you there. [More]

Quick Notes
2008-02-19 07:51:00
I have been busy the past couple days migrating email over to a new google apps account for everyone here.  Been interesting, and as such I had to change my main google IM account.  People can now chat with me via jcyr@besavvy.com.   Yes, I know bots can find my email, but they already have it and gmail does a good job at filtering.  I am not going to hide and obfuscate my email just because other people are shit heads. Migrate email to Google Apps
2008-02-18 13:18:00
I recently had to under go a process of setting up our company with google apps or otherwise known as google for domains.  It is a really powerful set of email tools, however for those already using email it isn't as simple as we would wish it for moving everyone over.  Here are a couple of things to expect: [More]

Pit Bull vs Porcupine
2008-03-12 15:20:00
Just got this via email.  OMG.  Full Image Here A Pit bull decided he would battle a Porcupine in back of his house in Southern California. But being both brave and STUPID, he ultimately learned the hard way that he can't always win. No matter how tough you are. A vet sedated the dog, and then removed a total of 1,347 quills. The dog survived, and hopefully learned a valuable lesson. Now tell me you had a bad day!!!

Advertising Generator
2008-03-12 12:54:00
A friend sent me this link for an advertising generator. Clever use of flash, and fun retro interface (though not terribly intuitive at times). Pretty darn funny.  I enjoyed making a whole campaign, but I thought the timesheets were even funnier.  Especially the hours logged under getting friends for facebook.

Portsmouth Most Walkable NH City
2008-03-20 16:09:00
I love Portsmouth , NH.  I can't imagine living anywhere else really.  I just read about one more reason to like it in a new report from prevention.com.  They ranked 500 cities for walking, walking friendliness, and actual walkers vs drivers.  Portsmouth topped the list for NH, and game in 58th nationally.  Not bad for a city of about 23,000 people.  One thing I didn't know: "Portsmouth has the state's highest percentage of mass transit riders and one of its lowest cars-to-household ratings."  Of course, I think Portsmouth could do better, and that doesn't bode well for other big cities such as Rochester that didn't fair well at all.  Durham wasn't even on the list, which means it was either too smal, or the transit system didn't offset for

live.com hates me
2008-03-19 15:12:00
In looking at my traffic for this blog and other sites one thing that jumps out is the lack of traffic from live.com. I have submitted my website to live.com many times over the past year and have had no luck in getting into their index until just last week. Now I am in the index, but only my home page. [More]

MySQL JDBC 5.0.5 bug with TIME column and midnight
2008-03-21 16:24:00
Coldfusion 8 comes bundled with the mysql commercial jdbc driver 5.0.5 (or it did with my install anyway).  I just ran into a bug that results in this error: java.sql.SQLException: Value '00:00:00 can not be represented as java.sql.Time The bug is the date / time parsing interprets midnight (00:00:00) as illegal for the TIME type.  [More]

Spam Email of the Day: Spam about Filitering Spam
2008-03-26 13:38:00
We all get a lot of spam.  Most of it is filtered by gmail for me (we use google apps for email).  One got through and the irony is really pretty sweet.  Read on and I am sure it will be clear why.  BTW this is at least the second exact same email I have gotten in a week.  I especially like that their mechanism to be removed from the list is a link to an email with no directions as to what to say/do. I went to their home page, and at the very bottom is a whole lot of white space (lots of BR tags), then a login blurb for some reason, then a counter! Yes a counter.  I haven't seen a counter on a corporate site in a good long time.  BTW it is at 93371 (I reloaded a few times just for old times sake). [More]

RPM's Cool Jukebox Flex App
2008-03-31 07:40:00
This morning I am playing/listening too a Flex powered jukebox of 16,000+ tracks of original music.   A local group here recnetly put out a challenge for musicians to write and record an entire album in the month of February.  700+ groups from around the world signed up and completed that challenge.  The listening party was last Friday and the new jukebox to listen to all of that music is now up and available. The jukebox offers quite a bit of flexibility.  Musicians can log into their account to update their track info, upload cover art, etc.  We can create your accounts and you can build play lists, mark favorite music etc.  I especially like the equalizer built into the header.  The music controls are docked at the bottom, but drag it around to have it

coldfusion 8.1 update note
2008-04-04 09:49:00
For reasons I no longer remember, I put my cfide folder in a non default place when installing CF8 on a few of my servers.  Not a big deal really.  I upgraded to CF 8.1 today and everything went quite well, however I noticed that the installer didn't see my cfide path, and instead prompted me to use the default one.  So if you are updating to CF8.1 and don't have it in the usual area, don't expect the installer to know that.  Luckily the installer does prompt you to confirm the path, so its easy to adjust.

Warcraft Blog Aggregator (list of wow blogs)
2008-04-07 07:58:00
I launched a new site this weekend.  It is a WOW blog aggregator.  What is a blog aggregator?  It is a huge list of warcraft blogs compiled into one master RSS feed.  So you can visit one site or subscribe to one feed to get a quick rundown on up to the minute blog posts relating to World of Warcraft .  It is updated every 15 minutes or so, and right now I have around 150 blogs.  That number will grow over time. A few notes.  I have taken care to make sure I am not pulling traffic from others.  These blog entries are only very short teasers, with full and clear links to the actual blog owner and full entry.  The entries are also not indexed by Google and such, so there is no issue regarding page rank and SEO.
