Flashback Friday - A League Of Their Own
2007-04-20 09:36:00
Today's Flashback Friday is about an English Synthpop/New Wave band who originally started in the late 70ies, but had their prime success in the 80ies. You might know their biggest hit, Don't You Want Me. Doesn't ring a bell? Well... read on then! The Human League was founded by two computer operators, Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh, in 1977. On their search for a vocalist, a certain Glenn Gregory, who later became lead singer in Ware and Marsh's new band, Heaven 17, turned down their offer, and so they went with an old school friend, Philip Oakey. Shortly after that, they decided to call themselves The Human League, a name taken from a science fiction wargame callet Starforce: Alpha Centauri. The Line-up was completed by art student Adrian Wright. Two albums were released by the quartet: Reproduction in 1979 and Travelogue in 1980, both mildly successful. The song Being Boiled was a reasonable club hit in 1978. But then the 80ies started...The original line-up split, and Oakey gat

Swiss Magic
2007-04-19 10:00:00
Over the last few weeks, Peter from Schallgrenzen as well as Peter from Coast Is Clear have introduced you to Swiss bands. It's kind of a shame that I often need to be reminded by "foreigners" that there are some good bands around in my home-country. But then it reminds me that I should take a closer look at the scene here more often...So today, it's my turn to present a Swiss band to you. I've only discovered them lately, and that's not something to be proud of really, as the Magic rays have been making music since 1989! They have released 4 albums and various EPs and maxi-singles since then, but I haven't found one single entry in Switzerland's Charts Archive. While this might not be a sign of quality anyway, it shows that the wider audience here hasn't heard of the band either. A fact that could be changed with Magicrays' latest offering, Off The Wall. We all know that in a perfect world, music like this would be heard all over, but we also know there's no such thing as a pe

Damn Computers!!!
2007-04-18 13:31:00
OK... it's like this: I've just written a full posting on a band that I intended to publish today. But just before I had finished it, my Firefox crashed, and guess what? Yep, you're right... I was staring at a blank page again! I use ScribeFire for writing my posts as I thought it's a very useful tool, but it obviously has no autosave function. OK, lesson learned, I'm gonna switch back to Deepest Sender again; at least with that, the writing is not lost when the browser crashes. It's back to square one for me with the posting, but that won't happen today anymore. Sorry 'bout that... blame it on the computer, and accept these songs as a humble apology! :)Tiger Tunes - (Angry Kids Of The World) Unite (MP3)Stars In Coma - People Put Up With A Lot Of Shit (MP3)Field Music - Working To Work (MP3)

Something Else?
2007-04-17 14:45:00
Compared to their latest two releases Anoraknophobia and Marbles, the newest album release from Marillion seems rather simple. Both predecessors were pre-financed by thousands of loyal fans and came in a beautiful designed special edition; and now, Somewhere Else has just been released in your standard jewel case, the only benefit being a limited edition 3-track DVD if you've preordered the album. Back to the roots then for UKs best kept secret?Well, I have to admit that I got this impression when I've listened to Somewhere Else for the first time. The songs seemed simple, with no extensive solo jaunts from any of the musicians, and the album was over before I've realized it. But Marillion wouldn't be Marillion if they'd keep things simple. You might miss the neo-prog-elements at first, but if you listen closer, you can still find them (or at least hints of them!). Prog-Rock-purists might nonetheless be a bit disappointed; there's only two songs that clock in over 7 minutes, and

Friday... But No Flashback!
2007-04-13 15:36:00
There's so much good new music around these days that it would be a shame to dwell in the past and write about old stuff. Therefore I'll continue with Flashback Friday next week, and introduce you to two new bands today that are worth an earful!First there's Oswald, a Glaswegian three-piece with Indie-Rock written on their flag. Founded only in 2005 by Tom McCreery, Ants McCreery and Charlos Taggart, Oswald (the name was taken from a street in Glasgow just before they entered their first ever band contest!) already have a pretty prominent fanbase. The Alarm, Dogs Die In Hot Cars, El Presidente and Four Day Hombre are just a few of those followers. Comparisons to U2, Coldplay or Radiohead is what you'll read often when the band is mentioned somewhere, and it's true that there are some hints of all these bands in Oswald's music. But they are not just copycats; Tom is a very talented songwriter (he's already won some songwriting contests in the UK), and the band's gigs must be ter

Guess Who's Back!
2007-04-10 22:47:00
Yep, it's me! After two weeks of diving in the Caribbean, and one week skiing in the Alps (quite a contrast!), I'm ready for new music, and there seems to be lots around! I've already visited some blogs, worked my way through the mailbox and listened to some of my latest CD arrivals. I'm nowhere near ready to present it all to you, but I will start to put it all together during this week. Just a little more patience, please... :)For now, I'll give you a nice little story. Actually, it's an article I've read in The Guardian whilst flying back from my diving holiday. It really put a smile on my face... maybe it does the same for you! Here goes the story of proud mum Sara Howard:Sick of the Wiggles, I decided to make an adult-friendly kids' playlist for my four-year-old son. I couldn't bear the thought of enduring another long drive singing Toot Toot, Chugga Chugga. So I downloaded a few of my childhood favourites, including the Muppets' Manamanah and The Bare Necessities, along

2007-03-16 11:14:00
I'll be gone in a FLASH, and won't be BACK for three weeks...yep, that's right. As of tomorrow, I will start my well-earned (stop laughing there in the back!) holiday, and since no one has invented underwater-blogging yet, there won't be anything new for you to read here. I'll be back after Easter (if I'm not kidnapped by the Easterbunny, that is!).But before I go, there are a few things I wanted to share with you:First of all, AirSpiel has given me permission to post three more songs from their album (read about it here). Better still, these are my three favourites. How good is that? The band also has a profile on bebo (click here) where they will be featured for the whole next week, and you can stream the complete album there. Last but not least, visit their homepage to order the album for only £6.50... I'm sure you can afford that! Meeting Blackfield - Part II
2007-03-15 13:07:00
Continuing the post from yesterday; here's the interview with Blackfield 's Steven Wilson:Hey everybody. What are you talking about?MOTM: We were talking about God, World politics and the deeper meaning of life.OK then… let me know then what you want to talk about with me, alright? (laughs)I was just asking Aviv if he knew where you hide your time-machine to manage all the projects you're working on.hmm… I just don't have a private life at the moment. I'm constantly working.Good for your fans.yeah, but not so good for me. But that's the way it is, I just can't stop myself. This is your second concert with Blackfield in Switzerland; I've seen you here with Porcupine Tree four times, and with every concert, the audience grew bigger. Do you think this will work as well with Blackfield?I hope so, 'cause the last time we played here with Blackfield, there were about 50 people in the audience. I really hope this is a trend, at least it was for the rest of Europe. Most of the shows

More interviews for you today. Here's the first part of the Blackfield interview, and some more of the fotos I took. When we came backstage, Steven Wilson was still busy with the soundcheck, so we started the interview with Aviv Geffen. Here we go:MOTM: Aviv, you're already a big name back in Israel; how is it for you to tour Europe?I'm a bit of a symbol for the younger generation in Israel. Nonetheless the audiences are bigger here in Europe. We have been on the road now for one week and every evening, there are about 800 to 1000 people attending our gigs. Just take a look at our MySpace-site… we have entries from all over the world. It all doesn't look too bad, does it?Were there already plans for a second album when Blackfield I was released in 2004?When Steven and I met for the first time, it was something like love at first sight. He liked my songs, I admire his production skills and he's a great guitarist. We started with four songs and intended to release an EP, but the r

AirPlay For AirSpiel
2007-03-13 15:20:00
I've mentioned Glasgow band AirSpiel on various occasions on my blog, and finally, the band has finished and released their debut album In Another Life. It's a collection of well-crafted, epic rock tunes with great potential to get stuck in your head once you've heard them. Album-opener Sign Away for example builds up slowly and is brought to an enormous finale with crashing guitars, guided by the significant singing of David Merry. It's him that gives AirSpiel that distinctive feel; his voice changes from melancholic to angry and is always recognizable. But his four bandmates are in no way put into the background. The guitar solos are always in the right place (especially good on title-track In Another Life), there's some nice piano/keyboard work (Home is a perfect example for that), and the bass and drums are also put to good use. All in all, this is a very enjoyable ride! The band has agreed to do an interview, and here's what they had to say (DM is singer Dave Merry, and JH i

Flashback Friday - Guilty Pleasures
2007-03-09 09:27:00
This week's Flashback Friday is all about those cheesy hits everyone talked about, but no one listened to! At least not if you were (or thought you were) with the in-crowd. And if you did, you probably told no one about it! Anyhoo... there were some bad crimes during the 80ies that are probably best forgotten, but now that we've all grown old enough to stand by our sins, here's a selection of my guilty pleasures:Musical Youth - Pass The DutchieA bunch of singing youngsters with some bad rapping, simple rhythm section, but a simply irresistible chorus. Even my parents were humming along this reggae-for-beginners-tune! Not that this is a sign of quality...Dominoe - Here I AmIf I'm right, this was a German band. Painting-by-numbers-rock this is, but once again, it was the chorus that did it for me. Mentioning this band amongst heavy-metal-fans was definitely a big NO-NO back then!Jermaine Jackson & Pia Zadora - When The Rain Begins To FallWhen everyone was high on Jermaine's little b

Sad news from Leya... according to their blog on MySpace, the band has split up! Some bands really don't like their music being spread all over the Interweb, but luckily for us, there are many others that have embraced the new technology and want people to hear their art. Enter Dead Heart Bloom. Early in 2006, Boris Skalsky and his project released their self-titled debut album for free on the net, and now, they did the same with the follow-up, Chelsea Diaries, another collection of beautifully crafted singer/songwriter-popsongs. A total of 8 tunes are available, and if you download the ZIP-File from the homepage, you'll also get the cover art and booklet. Don't miss the opportunity to discover a very talented artist... it doesn't get easier than this! Flashback Friday - Why Does It Hurt When My Heart Misses A Beat?
2007-03-02 09:52:00
It was in 1982 when Propaganda saw the light of day. Founded by former Krupps-member Ralf Dörper, Andreas Thein and Susanne Freytag, the trio recorded two demos which haven't been released until this very day. A few months later, Michael Mertens and Claudia Brücken joined the band, and shortly after that, English label ZTT (later famous for Frankie Goes To Hollywood) signed Propaganda. The first release was the single Dr. Mabuse, produced by none other than Trevor Horn. The production was quite something at that time, as it was one of the first records using sampling and computer-based recording techniques.Dr. Mabuse turned out to be a world-wide success and was highly acclaimed as a perfectly produced pop-song. A lot of costly and sophisticated remixes followed (find one of them below), and the accompanying video added very much to the avant-garde-touch the band already had. I still think the first video - shot in black and white - is one of the best ever released. It still hasn't

Here Comes The Flood
2007-02-28 11:00:00
Got a recommendation on Last.FM for The Brent Flood, a London-based indie-rock band. After a few listenings, I thought this is a worthy band to promote. So here you are:Formed in 1997 in Northern Ireland, The Brent Flood have been continuously writing and releasing songs, and established themselves as a good live band in Belfast. In 2002, after a few lineup changes, the band moved to Bristol, and while studying at Bristol University, became a regular act at various student venues. In summer 2005, the band then moved to London to become a part in the more vibrant music scene and it didn't take long for them to become a well-engaged live act. They continued to write new songs and released more EPs.The Brent Flood is now a four-piece, consisting of J. Marsh on vocals and guitar, Rob Chesterman, also guitar, Eddie Stalsberg on bass and Chris Chesterman on drums. Comparisons to their music range from bands as varied as The Smiths and Radiohead, and their sound often has a hint of post-rock

Once again, time is not on my hand, so I'm doing the lazy thing and just re-post a mail I've gotten recently. More joyous than Explosions In The Sky, less vocal than Arcade Fire, it's the kind of music which could soundtrack a modern day love story as easily as it could a mid-century war.The three track demo version of the forthcoming EP was voted number two (above such genre luminaries as Sigur Ros, Explosions In The Sky, Pelican et al) in the top 50 instrumental albums of 2005 by Decoymusic.com, a reward which anyone would struggle to dispute upon listening to the record. Sad news from Belarus (the band, not the country!): they have decided to call it quits. A debut album was almost finished, but will now probably never see the light of day. What a shame! Just to freshen up your memory: Belarus was a Brit-Rock-band with a promising future, and their catchy-as-hell hymn Standing In The Right Place ended up as my fifth-favourite single of 2006. Flashback Friday - Let Your Hair Down
2007-04-27 09:49:00
I'm gonna reveal another dark chapter today on Flashback Friday . In the past, I've mostly written about Pop- or New Wave-artists, but of course that kind of music wasn't everything back in those days. There was another side of music. It was kind of fun back then, and you somehow thought you'd belong to the bad boys if you listened to that music. When I think back now, it kinda creeps me out. Not so much the music, but the pictures that come with it. Let's talk about Hair Rock!By the end of the 70ies, Glam-Rock spawned a new child, often called Hair Metal or Hairspray Metal or, as above, Hair Rock. Some of the first representatives of the genre were Alice Cooper or Kiss, but Hair Rock peaked during the 80ies, when bands like Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister or Mötley Crüe popped up. The genre name is easily explained: just look at the pictures from these bands, and you'll figure it out, right? Got it? Hope I didn't scare you off (although I'd understand if I did...)

Camping In Washington
2007-04-26 13:11:00
I might not be the first to write about Washington 's new album, but I think it's necessary that the word about this very talented band gets around even more. Astral Sky is the follow-up to the band's debut A New Order Rising, and Washington don't need to be bothered by the term "the difficult second album". New Order Rising was a beautiful piece of melancholic folk-pop, and Astral Sky is all that, too, but with some more icing on the cake.Imagine you're on a trip through a Norwegian forrest. It's early dusk, the tents are pitched, and you just made yourself comfortable at a crackling fire. Boulder On The Brink, Firewheel and Trenches are the perfect background now. Three catchy and uplifting songs that will make you hum and tap along. Another beer, anyone?Let's take things a bit slower now. The title track builds up slowly and grows into a teriffic tune of epic proportions. And look! The first stars start to gleam on the nightly sky. Wonderful, isn't it? But it's not time yet
