Travis have just released their next single from The Boy With No Name. It's my favourite, My Eyes. And as you expect it from the boys, there's a funny video to go with the song:I've just found a great remix of Imogen Heap's wonderful Hide And Seek. The Unofficial Ciaran Strings Remix makes this perfect song even more perfect... or perfecterer... the perfectest? Well, check it out, will you? :)Imogen Heap - Hide And Seek (Ciaran Strings Remix) (MP3)And another break-up: Brazil, Indiana-based Prog/Psych-Rock-band, has decided to disband. Somehow, I can't find any information on the circumstances, I've just read it in the latest blog-entry from one band member. Aaron also tells us that the remaining band members will start working on new projects, and that they will start releasing previously unreleased material of Brazil via MySpace over the next few weeks. Another interesting and talented band gone... :(Brazil - Candles Cast Long Shadows (MP3)Brazil - Crime And The Antique Solutio

Another Trip To Denmark

It's probably no secret anymore that I'm a big fan of Scandinavian music, and a lot of my current favourites come from way up north. This band here is no exception; if you've been reading mine and Morten's blog frequently, you already might be familiar with them. The reason I'm writing another post on Bahnhof is that I've just recently received their debut album; and according to the label, I'm the first in Switzerland who has ordered it! :)Bahnhof is Janus Kortermann Jauch (vocals, guitars, keys), Ulf Benzon Soll (bass, backing vocals), Jesper Hother (guitars, backing vocals, keys) and Anders Urbak (drums); they have released their first EP in 2005, and earlier in 2007, the debut album Reverse saw the light of day through Strange Ear Recordings.Musically, the band resides in the indie-rock category, but the addition of electronica gives the sound a very energetic feel that you might know from powerpop-bands. The fellow Danes from Carpark North or Spleen United might come to mig

Busy working day today, so I just introduce you to this fine band with the press material that I've received. Find a couple of very pleasant songs after the writings (especially if you're into bands like Band Of Horses or Midlake!) the story: An album 2 years in the making, This Too Will Pass represents an emotionally intense amalgam of anxiety, isolation, and a series of transient experiences gathered over this turbulent era. It follows artist Hrishikesh Hirway through several relationships and residences; a break-up in Los Angeles following his last album, an uncle’s divorce in India severing a long year of writer’s block, a year of solitude spent crafting new material in his childhood home now vacant, and various stints on friends’ couches and apartments taking him from Los Angeles to Rhode Island. This Too Will Pass is a cathartic journey examining the depths of these experien

Catchy indie-pop, anyone? Try The Brights, an Essex four-piece that has been around for a few years now. They are currently working on their debut album, and offer us some of their older hits as teasers. They will go on a mini-tour through England in September, and who knows... maybe they're a "next-big-thing" in the making. The songs definitely have some potential!http://www.thebrights.co.uk/http://www.myspace.com/thebrightsThe Brights - London Belongs To Me (MP3)The Brights - Nature Got One Over Me (MP3)The Brights - Mother I Don't Belong Here (MP3)

Flashback Friday - Bang Your Head
2007-08-31 02:32:00
After the last more disco- and dance-orientated Flashback Friday s, it's once again time to unpack the guitars, put on your patch-loaded jeans-jacket and get rocking! Now extended versions or remixes of rock songs are rather scarce, but I managed to dig up some really cool ones, not least with the help of the Born Again 80s-forum which was once again a great help in finding these. So without further ado, gather your friends and a few beers, make some space in your living room, and let the airguitar-battle begin! :)Judas Priest - You've Got Another Thing Comin' (Cygnet Mix)ZZ Top - Legs (Remix)Yes - Owner Of A Lonely Heart (Red & Blue Mix)Van Halen - Why Can't This Be Love (Extended Mix)Foreigner - That Was Yesterday (Extended Version)Killing Joke - Love Like Blood (Gestalt Mix)

Not From The U.K.!
2007-08-30 09:08:00
Honestly... could you say no to a pair of lovely, innocent girls like the ones pictured above if they'd ask you to promote their music? Yeah, thought so... neither could I! And of course the songs they've sent me helped as well. So here are Hearts Of Palm U.K.!The two girls go by the names of Erica Elektra and Ambi D.... I'll leave it up to you to decide if they're their real names or not. They sure sound pretty cool, don't they? And so does the music: Erica's voice blends perfectly with her keyboards and beats, while Ambi adds her share with the help of triangle, tambourine, guitar, keys and even glockenspiel! The result is lovely lo-fi-pop with electro-beats, completed with a hint of dance and two spoons full of folk. The two friends have known each other since junior high; Erica has been playing the piano since she was three years old, and started to write songs at the age of 16. She was a lead-singer/guitarist for The Fancies and played alongside bands like Sleater Kinney and

Instead of promoting an artist or band, I've decided to promote something different for a change. And if you're one of those readers that only comes here for downloading MP3s, I urge you to sacrifice some minutes and read the text below. Thank you! This is a posting for a good cause! It's about something that most of you can do; it's pretty simple, and it's completely free! All you need is a bit of time, and good health. This is about donating blood. I have a date with my "vampire" tonight, so I thought why not make a bit of promotion for a good thing that many know of, but never considered doing.I've been donating blood for about 3 years now on a regular basis. Before that, I was asked many times by a regular donor to join her in this good cause, but it took me quite a while to make my first donation. Why? I can't really say. I'm not afraid of syringes, nor hospitals, nor doctors (or nurses, for that matter!). I guess I was just too lazy, and maybe a bit concerned about what w

I was really pissed off, and I wrote the club afterwards that it's impossible to travel by train (as they suggest on their homepage because there are no parking facilities around!) and see the full concert. I did not expect to get an answer, but I was wrong. I've received a very detailed mail about what happened on that day. As it turned out, I was lucky that I got to see the SOL and The Concretes at all! When it comes to song titles, some artists just don't know when to stop. Some like it cryptic (anyone knows what the title dcbtfoabaaposba from Dredg's El Cielo means??? Actually, you can find out here), some just loooove long titles (check out the tracklist of Red Sparowes latest album Every Red Heart Shines Toward The Red Sun!), and others seem to have had serious issues with childhood traumas. More Music From Denmark!
2007-09-18 09:02:00
Just before I've released my new blog Music From Denmark (see yesterday's posting), I was asked by a Danish band if I'd include them on the list. They stumbled on the blog by chance because it was already out there, but not yet promoted by me. Well, it's not about the how and when; good thing is that they have made themselves heard because their music is really worth an earful!Niepoort is from Copenhagen and combines the talents of Gustav Niepoort (guess where the bandname comes from! :) ), Peter Binau Høj and Janus Dyg. They already released 3 EPs so far, the first one in 2002, the latest in 2005, and have just finished their first full-length album called Serpentine. No news on a release date yet, but I hope it will be soon as the first two songs from it are really great! The music is a mix of powerpop, electronica and folk-rock voiced by Gustav Niepoort who sounds like a cross between David Bowie and David Byrne sometimes. Although the sound apparently has changed from rock to m

A while ago, I've told you about a little project that I'm working on, and finally, it's ready to be released into the wild! Just a quick recap:In a music forum I frequently visit, I was asked to make a list of what I think are the best artists from Denmark . At first, I've just made the list, and then added links to the artists' websites and whenever possible, free MP3s. I was quite pleased with the result, and started thinking about taking it a bit further. I thought it would be nice for people outside the forum to get a quick overview of Danish artists, so I decided to start a new blog, and aptly named itI tried to keep the blog as simple as possible (I just can't have another full-time-blog besides MOTM!); no fancy plugins, widgets or whatever you might call it. Just a list that gives you a short description of what the artist will sound like, gets you quickly to their website or lets you listen to a song or two. Simple as that!I know that the list at this stage is nowhere ne

Flashback Friday - Lots Of Money They Made
2007-09-14 02:21:00
Here's part 2 of the Pet Shop Boys singles review; for Part 1 (West End Girls), click here.Similar to West End Girls, Opportunities (Let's Make Lots Of Money ) was released twice, once in 1985 and again in 1986, after the big success of the re-release of West End Girls. Opportunities was the first major label single released with Parlophone, and gained a much greater popularity on the second release. The song was written around 1983, and a first, never-released version was produced by Bobby Orlando. The 1985 released version was recorded by J.J.Jeczalic of the Art Of Noise, and the second, more successful one by Stephen Hague. It got into the top-10 in the US and just missed out in the UK where its highest score was at No. 11.The idea for the song came when Chris Lowe asked Neil Tennant to make up a lyric based around the line "Let's Make Lots Of Money". Tennant has said that he was somewhat inspired by 1969 movie Midnight Cowboy, starring Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight. The lyrics ci

The fine lads from riotactmedia often send blogger-friendly mails to me; meaning that all a blogger needs to introduce a band is already written in these mails. So why invent something new when you just can copy and paste? :D Here's a good one:The guys in Head Of Femur have just put the finishing touches on their Limited Edition EP entitled Leader And The Falcon. And in celebration of its October 2nd release the Chicago based band is planning a full east coast assault, out to CMJ and back again. All this in anticipation of their full length which is now tentatively slated for an early 2008 release.Head Of Femur, oft-called Chicagos answer to the Shins, continue to be one of the most willfully weird bands to break out of Nebraska, enlisting some 21 musicians to play on their 2005 SpinART sophomore release, 'Hysterical Stars'. Two years later, the band has stripped down to a more accessible 5-piece while still managing to stay true to their ambitious trademark sound, lacing together a

I'm not writing very much about Electronica, but I do have a soft spot for that synthetic stuff somewhere inside me. I guess the 80ies must have planted that bug. Anyway, I just came across this project called Datassette, and after listening to a few tunes, I've decided that it's good enough to get a mention here.Information on who's behind Datassette is scarce; I only know that the project's based in London and has been around for a few years now. It could well be another "bedroom-artist", but then, it could also not. Maybe someone knows a bit more than me...?What made me take a closer look at Datassette is the cover-versions that he/she/they offer on their website. Be it the reworks of classics like Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush and Don't You Want Me from Human League, or newer stuff like Untitled from Interpol and that certain whistling song from Peter, Björn & Benny (or something like that... ;) ); Datassette's versions sound very fresh, but manage to keep the spiri

Flashback Friday - Coming Home Out Of The Dark
2007-09-07 01:36:00
If you were asked about Austria's most famous artist of the 80s, would you think about Johann Hölzl? Chances are good you might indeed. But probably you know him by another name: Falco!Hölzl was born in 1957 and showed his musical talent at an early age. He got his first piano by the age of four, and by the age of five, the Vienna Music Academy attested him having an absolute pitch. Later, after trying out an apprenticeship for a short time, he served his time in the Austrian army, founded his first band and studied for one semester at the Vienna Conservatory. But he felt he wanted to become a "real musician", and started playing as a jazz-bassist in Berlin's various clubs. One New Year's Day, while watching a ski-jump event, he was impressed with German athlete Falko Weisspflog, and so he decided to call himself Falco from this day on, altering the name to be more international.Back in Vienna, he builded himself a reputation as an avant-garde artist by playing in various bands an

I'm not a fan of opera music, but there are a few pop/rock-songs with opera in it that I like. One of those songs is Miss Sarajevo by the Passengers (better known as parts of U2). And when I heard that Luciano Pavarotti died today at the age of 71, this was the first song that came to my mind. He really makes Miss Sarajevo something special, and it's astonishing to just listen to his voice. Well, Mr Pavarotti might have gone to a better place, but his voice will stay immortal. Trapped!

Portland, Oregon. Home of Blitzen Trapper. Not to bad a name, but I'm still trying to figure out what it means. According to Wikipedia, the Blitzen machine is a special computer system. Or the German word for Lightning. Wonder how many lightnings (or computers) the band has trapped so far... but I guess we'll never know. What we do know though is that Blitzen Trapper has a couple of fine songs up their sleeves. I've just recently found out about the band (thanks to Michel!), and I still have some work ahead to discover all of their works, but the sound bits that I've found on the web made me thirst for more. Be it the perfectly relaxed indie-folk of Summertwin, the dry, country-inspired Texaco or 60s-rock-rooted Wild Mountain Nation... all of these songs are highly appealing, and I wonder why I've never heard of this band before. But I have now, and I do hope that you will also give Blitzen Trapper a good earfull! It might be your last chance to catch a glimpse of summer 2007!http:
