Flashback Friday - Sweet Velveteen
2007-06-07 14:37:00
Frequent readers of my blog might know that I really like overlong songs. I guess it started during the 80ies when I fell for those long remixes, and discovered some of the psychedelic tunes of the 70ies that bands like Pink Floyd made. And in 1989, I've heard a long song for the first time that from that day on remained one of my all-time-favourites.The song I mean is Velveteen by UK powerpunk band Transvision Vamp. The band was more known for their shorter punkrock-songs, but with Velveteen, they have created a 9:51 minute long epic and sexy lovesong for eternity.Transvision Vamp was formed in 1986 by Nick Christian Sayer and Wendy James, and the lineup was completed by Dave Parsons on bass and Anthony Doughty on keyboards and drums. Various musicians were added for studio sessions or touring. The band's blend of punk, art-rock and Spector-esque Wall Of Sound made them very popular in the late 80ies. Of course a lot of that popularity came down to Wendy James' sexually-charged and

Welcome To The North
2007-06-13 02:29:00
Peter has just beaten me to it, but a band as good as this one really deserves every promotion. And with the arrival of Great North ern's debut album here yesterday, I'm more than eager to present this band to you as well. So, Great Northern then. No, they're not Scandinavians, nor Canadians, nor from the Northpole. It's Los Angeles, California, where the band has their HQ. And somehow, if you listen to their music, you can feel some of that coast-cruising, beachcombing Californian influence. But there's more to the sound of Great Northern. The album Trading Twilight For Daylight is full of dreamy, melancholic and very atmospheric songs that take you on a journey through everything that makes a great pop record. "Doesn't it make you feel good?" sings Rachel Stolte on one of the songs, and you can only answer with a big YES to that. Stolte and her musical partner Solon Bixler add another great album to 2007 which I'm sure will be found somewhere in my top-list by the end of the ye

For The Birds

Only a quick tipp today. Ryan from North Carolina has sent me a message last week and told me to listen to one of his favourite bands, the Bowerbirds. And of course I did, and I have to admit their mix of folk with indie-pop is quite appealing. Obviously, they already have some famous fans in the likes of The Mountain Goats and The Rosebuds; the Bowerbirds have just recently been on tour with the latter. The latest album by the band called Hymns For A Dark Horse has been released last year, and I can offer you two songs from that album. Sorry that I don't have more time to describe their music, but I suggest you listen to the songs, and if you want to know more, check out the various links down below. And thanks, Ryan, for the tipp!http://www.bowerbirds.org/http://www.myspace.com/bowerbirdsReview from John Darnielle (Mountain Goats)Bowerbirds - In Our Talons (MP3)Bowerbirds - Dark Horse (MP3)Bonus Tracks:The Rosebuds - Blue Bird (MP3)The Mountain Goats - New Monster Avenue (MP3)Technor

A Symphony For You
2007-06-11 04:36:00
Another Last.FM-discovery of the weekend is Public Symphony . Born in a studio in London's Brick Lane by two guys named Dobs (vocals, piano, guitar, programming) and James (piano, bass guitar, drum programming and production), the band has already released an album in a do-it-all-yourself way.Reviews of the self-titled album range from A Pink Floyd For The Coldplay Generation to A Trip To Dreamworld, and it was indeed Pink Floyd that came to my mind first. The musical creations of Public Symphony sound lush and uplifting, and even if there are many comparisons to other bands, they managed to give the songs their own stamp. The band is currently supporting Marillion on their UK gigs. The album is available via their homepage where you can also stream it. Here are four downloads from the band's Last.FM-profile. There's also a pretty cool video for their great song Stronger that you can check out below!http://www.publicsymphony.com/http://www.myspace.com/publicsymphonyhttp://www.lastfm.d

When The Inspector Calls...
2007-06-20 07:05:00
It's another Visit-Denmark-day today. It still amazes me that a country so small brings out so many great artists (Switzerland's only a bit smaller, but compared to the band-output of Denmark, it seems a bit like a wasteland...). Anyway, I got a visit from Inspector Seven One on MySpace recently, and when an inspector knocks, you let him in, don't you? And some good songs really help to gain entry to my MySpace as well, and on that matter, Inspector Seven One never had to fear rejection!Inspector Seven One was ignited in 2004 by Ulrik Andersen, who plays guitar and bass, and Rene Odgaard on drums and programming. They already had written a few songs, but had yet to find a vocalist. This took almost two years, but good things come to those who wait. When Dan Johannesson remixed and sang some of their tunes, it was clear for Ulrik and Rene that the search was over, and the perfect singer was found! The sound of Inspector Seven One is quite interesting. Dan Johannesson's excellent voic

Believe it or not, I have finally updated my Music-Collection-blog!!! That was about time! I've also given it a slight facelift, but it's not the final version yet, I think. Anyway, if you want to know what takes up the space in my flat, click here!Icelands melancholic sound-architects Múm have released a new song called Dancing Behind My Eyelids. Splendid!Múm - Dancing Behind My Eyelids (MP3) (via Pitchfork)I suggest you head over to Morten and listen to those rather good songs from DAMPFBAHN! Every word he says about them is true, and a beach party always sounds good! And another good song Morten already mentioned is He's Gone by Danish synthie-guru tWAMi. Another great effort from the man! Listen here:tWAMi - He's Gone (MP3)I've gotten quite a few reactions to yesterday's Genesis-review. Thanks for that! Great to know that someone actually reads my stuff! :)And that's about all for now!Technorati Tags: Múm, DAMPFBAHN!, tWAMi, Genesis

Genesis - Tour It On Again
2007-06-18 10:41:00
You can say what you want about Genesis , but if you only have a little interest in music history, you just can't ignore them. You might not like them, true, but they have achieved and given so much to music history that it would be completely wrong to reduce them to the Phil-Collins-driven mainstream vehicle that they have admittedly become during their latter years. Just remember that they released their debut album in 1969 when no one really knew about mainstream! And Collins might be a member of Genesis, but he is not Genesis! So when Mike Rutherford, Phil Collins and Tony Banks announced their reunion tour last year, I took the news in with great pleasure, but also with a slice of sceptic. I started to follow the band around the Mama-era, long after Peter Gabriel has left the band, and discovered the older works only years later. But nowadays, I'm really more into the old stuff than the newer one, which doesn't mean that I don't like the new stuff at all. There were just too man

Flashback Friday - Do You Remember...
2007-06-22 02:31:00
... these "great" hits? Well, if they're great or not, is completely in the eye (or ear) of the beholder, but whilst going through my collection, I dug up some tunes that I just had to listen to again. Maybe some of them will bring back some good (or bad) memories for you, too. Try it!M.A.R.R.S. - Pump Up The VolumeYou MUST remember this if you grew up in the 80ies. And you'll probably must remember the video, too. I still think the song and video are dead cool. Put the needle on the record!Star Turn On 45 Pints - Pump Up The BitterCan't have one without the other, can you? I remember this one to be funnier when it was originally released, but it's still good enough for a few giggles. Cheers!Guru Josh - InfinityI quite like instrumental music, and in the 80ies, we got quite a few synthie hymns to feast our ears on. Guru Josh here has also contributed one, and has managed to leave a tiny footprint in 80ies music. Disappeared into the big one-hit-wonder-nirvana after this (probably b

The band had released some great songs under their old name already, and now, a new EP is available for free download.Apart from two new songs, the rather catchy Holding You Is Like Keeping Water In My Hands and Love Like We're Lovers, you also get remixes of two older Plastik songs, The Hunger and London, You Owe Me This Much.Lovers of catchy alternative rock with just a slight hint of emo should be very pleased with God Love You For A Liar, so go on and give this yet unsigned band a listen. ZIO (formerly known as Zero In On) has released a new song called Soot. It will be the next single from their latest album Pillow Talk. The Swiss band has been touring through the USA this spring and probably added a couple of more followers to their fanbase. And right so! The alternative rock of ZIO is very very good, and should not only be heard by us Swiss lads.Check out their MySpace where you can find more songs, and also the shops to buy their CDs (like CDBaby, iTunes etc.). I offer you the new song Soot here, and also the great Queen from ZIOs debut album The Oblivion Fair. The Leaves Are Falling Again!
2007-06-26 06:43:00
Although it looks like autumn outside, this one's not about the weather. It's about news from UK's Falling Leaves: the rocksters are working hard on their debut album, so far titled The Almanac, which should be released in October. Nice guys they are, the fans already get a little peek into what they're working at. A new song called Detroit 65 has been put up on MySpace (and now on this blog as well!), and although it still is a work in progress, it already sounds very promising! It's only in 96Kbps, but that's enough to give you a glimpse of what to expect.I was also allowed to give you another one of their newer songs, The Rotherhide Diarist, a honest and down-to-earth rocker that should wet the appetite for more. A couple more songs are still available in glorious quality from their homepage and are highly recommended by me. Killer or The Fallen Leaves are songs that no one should miss, so go ahead and get the stuff before it's too late! :)http://www.thefallingleaves.com/http

You might have read it already on either Morten's or Peter's blog, or even at Schallgrenzen itself, but a noble quest like this deserves every promotion it can get! I'm talking about the first (and hopefully not the last!) Schallgrenzen-Festival, which will be held on December 15th in Hildesheim, Germany. When I started my Make-A-Wish-contest last year (read here), Radio-DJ Peter from Schallgrenzen said that his wish would be to organize a small, but fine concert series in his hometown of Hildesheim. And now, only about half a year later, it looks like his wish is going to come true!He has managed to book three excellent Danish bands and a local German band for his festival. Juli Kapelle from Hildesheim will open the evening, followed by Late Night Venture, Volvoe and the fabulous Windermere. In my opinion an excellent line-up for a festival, and good enough for me to take a 7-hour-train-ride up to Hildesheim! If all goes as planned, Morten and Peter will also join the crowd, so it l

Down By The River
2007-07-04 03:37:00
In 2004, ProgRockers Porcupine Tree released their brilliant album Deadwing. Later that same year, Polish ProgRockers River side released their equally good album Second Life Syndrome. It was a tight battle at the end of the year between both albums, but in the end, Deadwing got the cup for Best ProgRock Album 2004 in my list. Now this year, it looks like the same battle is looming on the horizon. Porcupine Tree have already released another strong contender with Fear Of A Blank Planet, and in September, Riverside will send their third album, Rapid Eye Movement, into the race. My expectations are very high, and after listening to the new song that they have just put on their MySpace, these expectations just got a little bit higher. Rapid Eye Movement will be the last album in a trilogy, and I can't wait to put Out Of Myself, Second Life Syndrome and REM into a playlist and play them one after another... should be a great listening experience! For those of you unfamiliar with Riverside, I

It's supposed to be summer, but for the last few weeks, we hardly had a day without rain. And temperatures dropped down to as low as 13°. Not nice! So if I can't have summer outside, I want to have it at least musically. Enter Amazulu!Guessing only from looks and sounds of Amazulu, one would probably think the band must be from some Caribbean island, but actually, Amazulu was founded in London which is really not the sunniest place in the world (but I think some of the band members definitely had Caribbean roots!). Primarily founded as an all-female band with the exception of Nardo Bailey on drums, Amazulu was discovered by former Adam & The Ants-manager Falcon Stuart, who helped making the first single, Cairo, a modest success in the UK.During 1984/1985, the band had various appearances on Top Of The Pops or comedy-show The Young Ones ("Amazulu!" "Oh, is that right? AmaGlaswegian!"), and finally landed their first success in the USA with the single Montego Bay in 1986, a cover of a
