The Future Of Music Downloads?
2007-05-03 11:19:00
WE7 is a new music-download portal. The difference to your average online-store is that all the songs featured on the site are free, and there's no DRM on any of the tracks! Nonetheless the artists will get paid by WE7. The concept is pretty simple: on every song, the first few seconds (not more than 10...) will contain a commercial message. So the brands pay WE7 for the message, and WE7 pays the artist. It's of course no problem to cut the message from the song with a standard mp3-tool, so you can really get just the song. WE7 pays the artists based on the amount of downloads. But WE7 takes another step forward for those who don't want go and cut their files: if you want the song without an ad, there's a possibility to buy it straightaway. The other solution is that after 4 weeks, you'll automatically get the choice to download the track ad-free, and you don't have to pay anything for it!So what about sharing the files? No problem with WE7! All the music you download is free to s

Quick One...
2007-05-01 19:32:00
Had a day off work today, been outside, walking down a hill, taking some pics, enjoyed the nice weather, and I'm pretty exhausted now. Looks like an evening with telly and icecream! :)So here's just a pack of quick news: Delays have released a new live DVD (download trailer) and are working on their next album; visit Stereogum for a radio-rip of Interpol's new song about Heinrich; then head over to itsatrap for a new and utterly wonderful Moonbabies-song; go and touch a Guitar From Mars; join FreeIndie for a webmix of the Decemberists; and now watch the trailer for Danny Boyle's impressive new movie Sunshine with the wonderful Avenue Of Hope from I Am Kloot... perfect!!!

Flashback Friday - A Little Brit-Pop-History
2007-05-04 13:27:00
Today's Flasback Friday doesn't take us too far back; but thinking about it... 1993 is already 14 years ago, so I guess this is enough for a Flashback! 1993 saw the release of the debut album from a certain band called Dodgy, and as you might know, around this year, Brit-Pop started to take off. Dodgy were there to give their share to English music history!Dodgy was founded by Nigel Clark (vocals, bass) and Mathew Priest (drums) from Birmingham, together with Londoner Andy Miller (guitars) somewhen around 1990. They released a couple of singles during the next two years (the rather catchy Easy Way amongst them). The following debut album called The Dodgy Album (!) was produced by none other than Ian Broudie, the creative genius behind The Lightning Seeds. Although it was a good album that got decent critics, it was only with their second album Homegrown and the accompanying single Staying Out For The Summer, released in 1995, that Dodgy scored their first chart points.Just one year

MOTM Goes Classical
2007-05-07 15:53:00
I never had a strong connection to classical music. I'm not disliking it, but I never cared much about it either. Most of my experiences with classical music come from movies, be it that a classical piece is part of the score, or the original soundtrack itself has a classical approach. Like for example the Lord Of The Rings trilogy.Of course it's no coincidence that I mention Howard Shore's epic soundtrack here. Because yesterday, I attended my first full classical concert, or rather said a classical soundtrack concert. In 2003, Howard Shore took parts from his triple-soundtrack and put them together to a 2-hour-symphony. Since the debut of the LOTR-Symphony in Wellington, New Zealand, this work has been touring around the world, and finally reached Switzerland. As a big fan of the movies as well as the soundtrack, there was no chance I was going to miss this! The concert was held in Switzerlands newest (and probably best) concert hall, the Culture- and Congress-Hall in Lucerne. It w

Just a quick tipp to brighten up your Sunday: A Plague Of Angels has brought me to Mohair (the band, not the wool!), and it took only one spin of that brilliant song End Of The Line to make me order their debut album! I can hear The Coral, I can hear some Beach Boys, and even some jazz, all wrapped up in a nice indie-rock-feel. And that is only one song! Well, listen for yourself:Mohair - End Of The Line (MP3)Brilliant, isn't it? So here's another one for your listening pleasure, and Molotov gives you one more. Didn't have too much time this week to write a proper post, so here's another One Hit Wonders-Mixtape for your listening pleasure:Freeez - I.O.U. (Extended Version)I still have the maxi-single of this... F.R. David - Wordswas played about 429 times a day on the radio back then; yeah, it was easy to hate this one!Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me (Extended Mix)it was probably the chorus by Michael Jackson that made this song a success. Finnish indie-rock-band Tinker has released 3 new demos, and all of them are worth an earful. It's amazing how easy it seems for them to create those catchy songs. I can only repeat what I've written before: in a perfect world, these guys would be huge! Check out the songs (and the older ones on the official homepage!), and visit them on MySpace.http://www.tinkerwashere.net/http://myspace.com/tinkerbandTinker - Cynic's Heart (MP3)Tinker - Sleepwalk (MP3)Tinker - Tonight And Me (MP3)I've collected some free songs from Viola, another Finnish act, over the last couple of months, but I've never found an official homepage (have to admit that my search wasn't that intensive...). But via the link-list on Tinker's site, I finally found it. Viola have been around for a couple of years now, and they have just released their latest album, Wonderabilia. Their electronic pop songs might seem a bit outdated at first, but you just can't help to like them anyway. As they say themselves: Only p

MOTM Got Framed!
2007-05-09 09:49:00
Quite a few people have told me before to check out Irish band The Frames. Well, I did listen to some songs now and then, but never really got infected. That is until I heard Falling Slowly from their latest album The Cost. This song has slowly and steadily found a way into my head and decided to stay there for a while, so I guess it's about time now to take a closer look at these lads.Four-piece The Frames have released their debut album in 1992. The band's history includes various line-up changes, fights for record deals with various labels, and a handful of consistently excellent records and EPs. In 2001, the band released another album, For The Birds, on their own Plateau label.Over the years, thanks to constant touring, The Frames have built up a devoted fanbase. Their live album Set List, released in 2003, became the first of their albums to debut at No. 1 in the Irish album charts. Touring continued around the world, finally resulting in a international record deal with Anti R

No more Aereogrammes! 2007 looks like its becoming the year of splits. After Belarus and The Cooper Temple Clause, Aereogramme have now also announced the end of the band. I've only discovered this band recently through their wonderful album My Heart Has A Wish That You Would Not Go, but they've played themselves into my heart rightaway. Sad news about that split, but I'm sure you will read more about this band here by the end of the year when those well-beloved top-lists are due. They will still play some final gigs throughout the summer; check their homepage for the dates.http://www.aereogramme.co.uk/http://www.myspace.com/aereogrammeofficialAereogramme - Nightmaresvia Matador Records:Aereogramme - WoodAereogramme - Zionist TimingTechnorati Tags: Aereogramme

Meow!
2007-05-17 22:49:00
Funny name for a band... Meowskers. Well, who cares about a name when the music speaks louder than words? This Brooklyn bunch delivers energetic and ecstatic indie-rock, and has just released their first EP, Fake Orange. Label says that they "combine the jagged darkness of early Black Sabbath with the holy drive of U2, smoothing it out with the sexy swagger of 80's synth pop." Can you imagne that? Neither could I... but if it's true or not, doesn't really matter. These two songs here are quite good, even if I can't make out Black Sabbath or U2 (or maybe that's why they are so good! :) ). It looks like those guys from label Fanatic Promotion are just doing that! Since I've subscribed to their newsletter, promotion mails from their bands keep coming in. This might sound like a lot of spam, but Fanatic Promotion is a bit different: they excactly know what bloggers want! There's a little history of the band, some short reviews, the releases, all the links concerning the band and of course some free MP3s. It just might look like this:The Basement Play First US Dates, Debut Album Illicit Hugs and Playground Thugs Available Now."Their Irish barroom sing-a-long sound is done with impeccable precision" - The Tripwire  ".Ultimately impressive" - No Depression ".will sail beyond all other pretenders" - NME "Authentic blues swagger to delight fans." - Uncut "A whole record full of that kind of rich, organic rock that so few bands do these days (or at least do well)." - Dagger With a unique blend of indie-rock, blues, country and Irish barroom

Flashback Friday - Who's Got The Look?
2007-05-18 11:43:00
One of the earliest music videos I remember seeing is this one:In a mall where we used to go, there was this advertising pillar with a TV in it, and it showed some videos in an endless loop. Now while my mom went shopping, I usually waited near that pillar and watched those vids. Funny enough, ABC's The Look Of Love is the only one I can remember. It was probably not only the quite bizarre video, but I also liked the song very much, and I still do!ABC was formed around 1980 in Sheffield by music journalist Martin Fry, who joined the band Vice Versa after an interview he did with them. When Fry was engaged as a lead vocalist, the band changed their name to ABC. They were often put into the New Romantic movement, together with the likes of Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet. But ABC's sound was quite different from a lot of these bands, because they often incorporated hints of funk and soul in their songs, and were also influenced by Northern Soul.I won't go any further into the band's hi

Dave from Glasgow's indie-pop-band AirSpiel has let me know that their rather great debut album In Another Life is now available on iTunes as well. Hot Tracks Revisited
2007-05-26 07:13:00
You maybe might recall that I've started another blog called MOTM Hot Tracks a while ago (see the button on top right). I intended to put there my favourite tunes of the moment, so you can easily check what I'm listening to. Well, it started off quite good, but I somehow couldn't get myself to update it regularly after a while. So yesterday, I figured that it's about time to do something about it. So I revamped the Hot Tracks:- the tracks are no longer on a separate blog. I've put them on this very blog, and changed the link on the button to the new posting.- it will still open in a new window or tab for easier viewing- I will only post songs that are (or were!) available on the net for free and legal. No guarantee that the links will work forever though! (I will check them from time to time and remove expired ones)- the current favourites will be posted on top of the list, while past ones go at the bottom.- I've not yet decided on how I will let you know about the updates. Flashback Friday - Awwww, Cute!!!
2007-05-25 02:08:00
We all love baby animals, don't we? Just think of that cute, little icebear currently charming the visitors in Berlin's Zoo (although his darling status is now in peril because of a baby-elephant, from what I've heard...). Or who wouldn't melt when little kittens look at you like this?Anyway, this is not Animal Friday , so let's get to the music. We will talk about Baby Animals though, and the ones I like you to remind you of today are from Australia. Better said, they were from Australia, as this rock outift has been vanishing from the music world quite a while ago.In late 1991/early 1992, I was on a 2 1/2-month trip through the Great Southern Land, and it was then when I discovered the Baby Animals. On one of my frequent visits to a CD store, I've bought an all-Australian-compilation CD for the car, and the first song on it was Rush You from a band called the Baby Animals. It didn't take long until my three mates and me started to headbang along to the tune, and when frontgirl

Transmission From Sweden

I've posted Antennas' song Adapt! a while ago in a mixtape, but I think the band really needs some more promotion than just that. So here we go:Antennas is a three-piece from Sweden , were founded around 2004 and originally named Novak. After two of the founding members left, the band changed not only the name, but also their musical style into a more rocking, mature and modern sound. "Lo-Fi aesthetics meet full-on orchestration with strings and horns" and "Nice harmonies meet disortion and glitches of noise" is what the label says, and if that isn't enough to convince you, they do provide some tasters to do the rest! The Antennas have just released their debut album Sins, and while first single Always On My Mind was a bit on the psychedelic and darker side, new one Adapt! is a catchy and danceable pop-tune with lush instrumentation and clever chorus. This is stuff that should be played on the radio all day!So put these songs here on your computers, portables, cellphones or whatever y

Crowded House will release a new studio album, Time On Earth, on July 2nd. It's the first release with new drummer Matt Sherrod(formerly with Beck), and the first "proper" studio album after 1993's Together Alone (there have been various Best-Of-compilation and last year's fabulous live-album Farewell To The World). I've just been listening to the new stuff, and it sounds great. The guys haven't lost their talent for catchy and mellow pop-melodies, so I guess fans of the band will indeed be very satisfied. Band Of Horses Live
2007-05-31 04:03:00
So I went to see the Band Of Horses ' only concert in Switzerland yesterday. I did miss Midlake in April, so I made sure that this wouldn't happen again with my other favourite band from 2006!I remember the Boa in Lucerne as a good concert location (saw Calexico & Iron And Wine there last year). It's spacious, and you get good views to the stage even from the back. Well, that is if there's enough people at the concert. What I completely forgot about is that there's also a smaller room with a smaller stage, and since there were only about 50 or so people attending yesterday, the Band Of Horses played in that sticky, sweaty and smoky room... hmm...The concert started with Wayne Robbins & The Hellsayers. a band from North Carolina. Their mix of folk and indie-rock was quite good, and the guys seemed to have fun on stage. They didn't completely knock me out of my socks, but I've seen far worse. Listen to some songs below. Then it was time for the Horses. Crammed on the stage,

New Band To Waltz Along With
2007-06-05 02:19:00
The request of new MySpace-friends has recently slowed down a bit, and I'm not really concerned about it. It's definitely no use to have 1000s of "friends", but half of them doesn't do anything on MySpace, or just place ads into the comments or bulletin section. So I also checked through all my current friends recently, and discovered that there were already a few that no longer exist, or have even changed the band name. And there are quite a few ones that I don't even remember accepting! Anyway, a few requests still drop in from time to time, and every now and then, there's an artists that deserves more attention. When London band The Waltz knocked on my door last week, I opened it widely after I've heard the three songs they're offering. Their indie-rock with heavy Britpop-influences is really something worth hearing. All of the three songs have great potential and caught my ear immediately. Be it the slow build-up of Man On The Run that remembered me of those early glorious Oa

Anathema - Live Review
2007-06-04 03:32:00
This was the second time I saw Anathema live; the first time, they were "only" the supporting act for Porcupine Tree, but even in the short time they had back then, they were very convicing. So I was of course very curious how they'd do as a headliner. But first we had to go through the supporting act called Moondawn, a Swiss melodic metal band with a female singer. Their mix of Evanescence and Nightwish was rather... hm, well... average. I guess these are the occasions that mobile-games were invented for. :)After a short break, Anathema entered the stage. The star of the band clearly is singer and guitarist Vincent Cavanagh who got the loudest cheering when he appeared. He came across very natural, greeted some of the fans that he recognized from earlier concerts, and also welcomed the crowd with a few German words. Very nice indeed!Musically, the band was also in a very good mood. They played right through their back catalogue (but left out the older, death-metally stuff... thank yo

Free Prostitutes!!!
2007-06-06 02:48:00
I wonder how many hits I will get with that tagline! :DAnyway, if you're really looking for easy girls here, I'm sorry... you're definitely in the wrong place! But if you're here for some cool indie-rock with a shoegaze touch, read on!We're hooking up with The Prostitutes from Czechoslovakia (yep, still talking about music!) who I found on Last.FM yesterday. Now the similarities to Joy Division, Interpol or She Wants Revenge become obvious once you listen to their songs, but it would be unfair to judge the band for that. The songs are really more than just cheap copies; Eject for example is an energetic post-punk-tune that will make you tap along immediately. Sunshine on the other hand convinces with some great guitar walls and a very catchy chorus. And you can definitely get out your dancing shoes for She's Dead, which has a slight Bowie-esque feeling to it!The Prostitutes formed in Prague back in 2004. After they had recorded their first EP and put it on MySpace for sharing, t
