The “fag bug” has been spotted 2007-06-23 08:19:18 Remember the “fag bug?”
Here’s an update from Erin Davies herself:
So I leave for my cross country trip next Wednesday June 27th. There’s so much to do before I take off and the closer it gets the more real it is all becoming. Although I know I will make it home safely, I still feel that I am risking my life in doing this and have gone into this all with a desire to do something to make change in our society but also want to make it through it. I want to address people who are homophobic on my trip and put my car in situations where people aren’t expecting to be confronted with homophobia in such a direct way. That is the goal, to evoke a dialogue with people who aren’t tolerant. My itinerary is up on my myspace page and if anyone has any ideas of specific places or events to take my car where the general public won’t be expecting it in any of the areas I’m going to please send me an email at erin@fagbug.com. Also, the fagbug t-shirts jus
Come Out & Play: on the job 2007-06-22 09:00:11 This week’s Come Out Play post spotlights coming out on the job.
I work a nine-to-five job at pretty large corporation downtown in which most of my day is spent writing in some shape or form, coming up with catchy taglines and trading witty comments with my co-workers. At work, it’s no secret that I am a lesbian. In fact, I’ve never been one to hide or avoid it.
Now don’t get the wrong idea. I don’t wear rainbow colored socks to work every day, nor do I have a huge rainbow flag waving over my cubicle, flapping in the wind of the air conditioner. What tipped my coworkers off? I don’t know exactly. It might have been that little ditty I wrote for a My View Column in The Buffalo News in November off 2005 about gay marriage where I basically announced to the entire city that I was, in fact, a lesbian and that I also wanted to get married someday. Shrug. OR it could simply be the fact that I talk openly about who I am and trust that I work with a good group of solid individuals

July 23, 1816 - February 18, 1876
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Charlotte was encouraged by her mother to take up singing and after attempting opera unsuccessfully, she tried acting, making her stage debut in 1836 in New Orleans. She went on to become one of the greatest actresses of her day, successful at home as well as on the London stage. Her repertoire encompassed a wide range of parts, including male roles such as Romeo. A commanding presence both on and offstage, Cushman used her fortune and fame to champion the work of other women artists, among them her lover Emma Stebbins.
Interesting tid bit:
Charlotte was not attractive physically, in the traditional sense. She had been a tomboy during her early years, was strong, confident, and although not large she was of a robust build. It was, then, her wit and energy that captivated her audiences. While establishing herself as an actress, Charlotte also did some creat
Gay Mormons face challenges with religion and sexuality 2007-06-27 08:32:19 And we all thought coming out Christian was hard … not to lessen the difficulty, but in my opinion there are more open-minded Christians than there are open-minded Mormons
.
NPR’s Alex Cohen put together an audio report on how Mormons grapple with their faith and sexuality.
For Ben Jarvis, the tension between Mormon teachings and his sexuality led him to leave the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. But Affirmation, a support group for gay, lesbian and bisexual Mormons, has helped Jarvis and others retain and share traditions, whether or not they are “officially” church members.
Listen to Ben’s story.
The Mormon faith has always puzzled me. It appears to be so much more strict than other religions and then there’s the whole excommunication aspect. Imagine having an entire group of people, with whom you have bonded spiritually and wholeheartedly, turn their backs on you. There are numerous resources for gay Mormons, however, that have been e
Forget about the Emmys, what about the Outies?! 2007-06-26 07:46:43 First off, whoever came up with the Outie name was, shall I say, trying to hard? And second, what the heck is an Outie anyway? The only outie I know of is the kind of belly button that sticks out and looks rather awkward. This kind of Outie, though, is the kind that can be taken home and set up for all to view in an enclosed glass case next to the softball player of the year award and the most fabulous queen of the century plaque.

Gayest moments in music 2007-06-25 09:27:51 Happy Monday! This time, I don’t have any horrific news to report. Actually, I hardly have any time to write at all. So, I will point you in the direction of an awesome article that sums up the gayest moments in music by Blender magazine.
Here’s a taste of one of the moments mentioned…
I remember when I saw that happen. I think I had to pick my jaw up off the floor afterwards. As for another quick bit of gay humor to share on this fine Monday, check out Adri’s (of Pride and Opinions fame) No Style comic. He sums up what a lot of us mainstream homosexuals feel, but can’t quite put into words. He captures it perfectly with this splendid artistic display of sarcasm.
I’ll return tomorrow with more riveting commentary on news, entertainment, gossip or anything remotely interesting that tickles my fancy.

BATON ROUGE, La. — LSU has paid former women’s basketball coach Pokey
Chatman the $160,000 owed her as a result of a recent contract settlement that followed her abrupt resignation from the school earlier this year, Chatman’s lawyer said Wednesday.
Chatman resigned March 7, shortly before the NCAA Tournament, after assistant coach Carla Berry raised allegations of improper conduct with a former player or players. The team went on to reach the Final Four under assistant Bob Starkey, now the associate head coach under new coach Van Chancellor.
In a settlement announced in mid-June, LSU offered Chatman $85,000 in postseason bonus money, on top of the $75,000 both sides agreed she was du Read more:walks

Off for the 4th … 2007-07-04 10:57:09 Yes, that’s right. I’m giving myself the day off from blogging, seeing as how it’s a holiday and all. I did want to stop in at the “office” to say a nice and sincere, “Happy 4th of July” to everyone. Despite our country’s wayard stance on so many issues and the perplexing decisions made day in and day out by our government, I still feel a sense of pride for the place in which I call home.
For those of you looking for a good post, perhaps in the 451 community, I would highly suggest dropping by Adri’s blog. He’s my fellow GLBT blogger, only a tid bit more humorously cynical. I sent him an article yesterday that knocked the wind from my sails so drastically, I couldn’t bring myself to actually sit down, contemplate and write about it. Instead, I threw it in Adri’s lap - knowing he’d have the ability to stomach what I couldn’t. As usually, he did a fantabulous (yes, it’s a real word!) job sayi
CNN explores gay issues, Rosie rips Bush 2007-07-03 08:48:04 There were two things I wanted to tackle with my pen today (or keyboard as the case may be) and I couldn’t decide which topic tickled my fancy more. So, I decided to comment on both.

. I rarely check the top news media sites such as CNN or Fox unless I’m insanely bored or there’s a certain event occurring that I need to gain a little more insight about. Otherwise, I think both media outlets have gone a little awry. However! What I happened upon while perusing CNN’s website made me say, “Hey, look at this! Go CNN!”
CNN has a feature called I-Report, where they explore a certain topic or issue as a special report. The thing that made me say, “Neato!” though, was the fact that they often use the public eye as the source of information. Hence the clever name, I-Report.
The I-Report that interested me the most was the one called, “Fighting for Acceptance”
The feature focuses on the GLBT community, highlighting coming out stories, pictures and e-mails, pol Read more:Rosie
Lesbian gangs: real threat or right-wing spin? 2007-07-02 09:41:04 My father loves Bill O’Reilly. Hey, we all have our flaws.
Seriously though, I don’t mind O’Reilly that much. He doesn’t affect me because I don’t watch him nor do I really care about what he has to say on a daily basis. I don’t blindly judge him either, as some people do who have never even watched his show. I have watched it before, and therefore can make an honest, balanced assessment of him. I think that sometimes he makes some good points and other times he’s talking out of his ass. To me he’s like an old I Love Lucy rerun. If absolutely nothing else is on and it’s a pretty good episode, I’ll watch it, which happens maybe once a year. Otherwise, I could care less if I miss it.
Last weekend my father was visiting and stayed with my girlfriend and I. My father and I ended up relaxing on the couch after a happy hour stint at his favorite hang out, and of course he wanted to catch O’Reilly. So, I humored him. It just so Read more:threat

, a well-known character from the hit show, Degrassi.
I grew up with Degrassi. Well, not the Degrassi of today, but the older version from the 80s.
It was such a classic and ground-breaking show because it portrayed real, every day kids going through real-life problems. There weren’t all these beautiful actors or actresses playing these characters. These characters were actually played by average looking kids, making the show all the more identifiable. Story lines touched on drugs, rape, teen pregnancy, anorexia, gay and lesbian issues, divorce, etc. You name it, they covered it.
The Degrassi of today is much like the 80s version, only geared towards today’s teens. Filmed in Toronto, it leaves no stone unturned when uncovering the latest in adolescent angst. Of course, they air the un-cut version in Canada. Even today, some scenes are considered too racy for the American audience. You gotta hand it to them Canadians, ne

Gertrude Stein was an American writer and is considered to have acted as a catalyst in the development of modern art and literature. After moving to Paris in 1903 she started to write in earnest: novels, plays, stories, libretti and poems. Increasingly, she developed her own highly idiosyncratic, playful, sometimes repetitive and sometimes humorous style. Stein met her lifelong partner, Alice B. Toklas in 1907.
Interesting tid bit:
Stein spent most of her life in France. Her salon at 27 Rue de Fleurus, with walls covered by avant-garde paintings, attracted many of the great artists and writers including Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Henri Matisse, Thornton Wilder, Sherwood Anderson, and Guillaume Apollinaire. She coined the term “Lost Generation” for some of these expatriate American writers. Several of Stein’s writings have been set by composers.

Here’s my “peace” on gay marriage:

Hypocricy at its finest 2007-07-10 09:26:04 I just love how some people in our government, you know the ones who “make the rules that govern our society,” act as though they live holy and just lives, abide by every rule (written or other wise) in the good book and speak out on the sanctity of marriage … only to be exposed, in some way, shape or form - for the hypocrite that they truly are.

The dangers of teaching hate 2007-07-17 09:15:52 I’m feeling a little feisty this morning. Could be because of a certain story I read in the Houston Chronicle.
Murder suspect says he was doing God’s work
A Cypress man charged in the death of a Southwest Airlines flight attendant said Saturday that he was doing God’s work when he went to a Montrose-area bar last month, hunting for a gay man to kill.
“I believe I’m Elijah, called by God to be a prophet,” said 26-year-old Terry Mark Mangum, charged with murder June 11. ” … I believe with all my heart that I was doing the right thing.”
Interviewed in the Brazoria County Jail Saturday morning, Mangum said he feels no remorse for killing 46-year-old Kenneth Cummings Jr., whom relatives described as a “loving” son who never forgot a holiday and a devoted uncle who had set up college funds for his niece and nephew. He worked at Southwest for 24 years.

The difference between lovers and friends 2007-07-18 09:43:53 For as far back as I can remember, I thought my aunt Lois was gay. There are many memories of family gatherings that swirl through my mind, mostly holiday parties, where she’d come to town just to pay a friendly visit. She was the aunt I considered “the cool aunt,” and I was always delighted to see her. I noticed that, on occasion, she often brought along her friend, Pat. Though the family never discussed it openly, there was always some confusion, followed closely by assumption, whenever Pat was concerned. I remember thinking it strange, this woman always showing up at our special occasions. Was I to treat her like an another relative of mine, another aunt perhaps?
Years passed and soon the mysterious friend, Pat, became known as aunt Pat. In fact, they became an auntie team. The confusion dissipated and seeing the two of them once or twice a year at Thanksgiving or Christmas became tradition. Though, the rumors never faded. A debate for the next generation 2007-07-24 08:59:03 CHARLESTON, South Carolina — Democratic presidential candidates faced questions directly from voters on Monday in the first CNN/YouTube debate.Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and Gov. Bill Richardson listen to a YouTuber’s question.
The lights and cameras were focused on the eight candidates, but it was the personal, heartfelt and, at times, comical nature of the user questions that stole the spotlight.
Questions included one from a father who lost a son in Iraq and wondered if he would lose another, a gay couple asking why they shouldn’t be allowed to marry and a woman stricken with breast cancer who asked if her chance of survival would be better if she had health insurance.
In all, 39 questions were asked from the 3,000 submissions YouTube said it received.
Most observers agreed that none of the candidates debating at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, particularly outshined their rivals, doing nothing to challenge Sen. Hillary Clinton’s pos

(Johnson City, Tennessee) The minister of a Baptist church has been charged with indecent exposure and driving under the influence, and police officers say he propositioned them.
Tommy Tester, 58, of Bristol, Va., was wearing a skirt when he was arrested last week after allegedly urinating in front of children at a car wash, police said.
Police also said Tester offered to perform oral sex on officers who were sent to the scene.
Authorities identified Tester as the minister of Gospel Baptist Church in Bristol and an employee of Christian radio station WZAP-AM in Bristol.
There was no immediate response Tuesday to calls to the church and Tester’s home.
WZAP issued a statement Monday asking for prayers and saying Tester had been suspended during an investigation.
“We pray this matter can be quickly resolved,” WZAP owner Al Morris said in the statement.
Tester was released on $1,000 bail.
