Calling Out All WordPress.com Music Bloggers (And Readers)!
2007-04-19 17:50:29
Since I started this blog, I’ve been visiting a lot more music/mp3 blogs than I used to. They serve as both a source of inspiration and a source of current music-related news and recommendations which I’m very grateful for. While browsing through music blog aggeregators (I highly recommend The Hype Machine and Elbo.ws) and the usual music tag on the WordPress homepage, it occurred to me that there’re very few music/mp3 blogs that are hosted on WordPress.com (comparing to other free blogging platform). I know that WordPress is a much smaller community comparing to Blogger but still, I don’t get why there’s such a small amount. So I went on a quest to search for all the music/mp3 blogs I could find because there must be some I don’t know yet. This is a list of all the active and frequently updated music/mp3 blogs I found: All Things Go Berkeley Place B(oot)log i-weenie Scene, Not Heard Shameless Complacency Sound As Language standard lipsum. The Maccabees - Colour It In (2007)
2007-04-18 10:13:32
The Maccabees (Website, Myspace) The Maccabees were a Jewish national liberation movement that fought for and won independence from Antiochus IV Epiphanes of the Hellenistic Seleucid dynasty, they founded the Hasmonean royal dynasty and established Jewish independence in the Land of Israel for about one hundred years, from 165 BC to 63 BC. Wait, scratch that, The Maccabees are an indie rock band from Brighton, England and they came up with their band’s name by leafing through the Bible. I’m telling you, the places that people go to in order to find band names are unbelievable but hey, most band names are silly and meaningless anyway. This debut album isn’t original and it doesn’t offer anything new that hasn’t been done before by several British bands from the post-Libertines era. But the band does it well and I like this album, which isn’t something I can say for most bands that belong to that genre (which I just madeup). The album will be released

Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007)
2007-04-18 10:12:40
Arctic Monkeys (Website, Myspace) I believe that enough has already been written about the Arctic Monkey’s success and hype, especially regarding their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. Like many people, I didn’t really understand what all the fuss is about. That album isn’t a bad album, it’s nice, catchy and has some fine moments but it’s not great either. For a band in their status, I’m sure there was a lot of pressure on them when they began recording this album, after all, plenty of bands with successful debuts have had sophomore slumps. I’m not sure what I expected this album to sound like but I can certainly say that it sounds better than I expected it to be. Brainstorm, the album’s opener track and lead single, is heavier and faster than anything on their previous album. I think they chose wisely when they picked it as their first single because it’s certainly one of the best songs on th

The 90’s Are Back? Not Really
2007-04-17 18:21:32
In the last week or so, I came across a few names that were big in the 90’s and have recently released new songs. In most cases, I had no idea that they’re still making music so as a big 90’s fan, I was pretty excited to hear some new music by these musicians. But I’m afraid my excitement and anticipation met with disappointment in about a minute or two through the songs. Why is it that so many 90’s bands have trouble staying relevant in today’s music scene? I don’t really know how to answer that question but one thing is certain, I wish they’d try something new for once, instead of trying to write the same song over and over again. Dolores O’Riordan is (was?) the lead singer of The Cranberries, the highly successful rock band from Ireland that most people know thanks to their hit song Zombie. I was flipping through channels, while I heard a familiar voice on MTV (or was it VH1?) and to me surprise, it was Dolores, looking pretty

The Besnard Lakes - The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse (2007)
2007-04-17 15:07:11
The Besnard Lakes (Website, Myspace) It’s not a secret that I love Canadian music. I’m not sure what it is about this country that makes people create such good music or makes people generally beautiful (I had a dream about her last night), perhaps it’s in the water or snow or something. This band comes from Montreal, Quebec and is formed by the husband and wife team of Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas, this is their second album. I can’t say that I’ve heard of them before but I’m definitely glad that I’ve gotten to know them through this beautiful piece of music. The immediate comparisons that come to mind while I listened to this album for the first time, are fellow Canadian bands like The Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene. But upon further listening, I realized something very important: this album calms me down, it’s just as simple as that. The atmospheric and spacey approach, the gentle vocals, the mellow melodies, it all sounds like

Jesu - Conqueror (2007)
2007-04-17 12:11:20
Jesu (Website, Myspace) Thanks to this post, I finally got a chance to listen to Jesu. Like you may have noticed, I’ve been doing a lot of catching up lately with releases from the last few months. As a frequent visitor to websites and blogs that revolve around music, I constantly come across new bands and artists and the list of music I want to check out just keeps getting longer and longer. But this week I finally got around to listen to samples of many of those bands that I’ve only known by name and finally knowing what they sound like. When I come across something I like, I usually get the album and see if those couple of songs I liked were chance or if the band is really good. In this case, the band is definitely that good and even more. This is Jesu’s second full-length album (they also released 3 EP’s so far) and while I can’t comment on how this album compares to the rest of the band’s material simply because I haven’t heard any of it,

Klaxons - Myths Of The Near Future (2007)
2007-04-16 22:17:41
Klaxons (Website, Myspace) Apparently, the Klaxons belong to the New Rave genre and while personally, I really don’t care about genres because labeling music (or anything else for that matter) is pretty silly, “music fusing elements of electronic, disco music and punk” sounds just about right. This debut album was released in late January but I only got around to listening to it a couple of weeks ago and along with Patrick Wolf’s The Magic Position, it totally made my week with all these fun sounds and attitude. While it doesn’t really offer anything original, it still manages to sound fresh and new. This album simply makes me smile and I think we all need that kind of albums in our lives. I picked the two grooviest songs in the album in my opinion, hope you enjoy them. Stream: Klaxons - Magick Klaxons - Atlantis To Interzone Download: Klaxons - Magick Klaxons - Atlantis To Interzone

Patrick Wolf - The Magic Position (2007)
2007-04-16 22:00:06
Patrick Wolf (Website, Myspace) I can’t say that I know much about Patrick Wolf . I’ve seen his name mentioned in various places that I can’t really remember but I don’t believe I’ve heard any of his music up until this album. This is the third album of this young singer/songwriter and is definitely one of the funnest albums I’ve heard this year (so far). According to Wikipedia, he plays a whole lot of instruments including guitar, piano, violin and about ten more. You can definitely hear it in the album, it’s filled with a lot of different sounds and textures and mostly sounds like one hell of a party. Not to say it’s shallow or hollow because it isn’t, it has its serious moments, its dramatic moments but overall, this album just makes me feel good. I definitely plan to follow him from now on. This batch consists of b-sides and bonus tracks that the band released with their A Weekend In The City release, check out Vision Of Heaven because it’s amazing. And if you know what’s good for you, you’ll get them all. By the way, if you know of a song that isn’t listed either here or on part one, it would be great if you’ll leave a comment and let me know. Mew
2007-04-14 14:36:01
Mew (Website, Myspace) Apparently, Mew is a legendary pokémon but it also happens to be a pretty awesome band from Denmark. I discovered this band kind of late or at least, I started paying attention to it much later but like the cliche says, better late than never. I remember seeing their video for Comforting Sounds a few ago and I think I also had the song on my computer at some point but I have no idea what happened to it but I managed to forget all about them up until a few months ago. The band has released four albums so far, although many of the songs that appear on their first two albums, also appear on their third album, Frengers, which was released in 2003 and gave the band their international breakthrough. The versions are slightly different but I think the songs sound better there than on their earlier releases, they sound more mature and better developed. This band creates really beautiful music, very melodic and sounds very European, very dreamy and contemplative. Jona

30 Seconds To Mars Have Different Versions
2007-04-21 21:49:21
30 Seconds To Mars (Website, Myspace) Something happened to 30 Seconds To Mars in the last couple of years and that something isn’t good. It’s not a secret that for the most part, bands with actors playing in them don’t achieve much because they aren’t seen much but as a silly hobby but there was a time when I took this band seriously. Their self-titled album which was released in 2002 is a powerful piece of alternative rock. Jared Leto’s voice sounds quite good and his lyrics aren’t as bad as some might expect. I enjoyed that album. When their second album, A Beautiful Lie was released in 2005, I was quite curious to hear how they’ll manage to follow up their nearly perfect debut. I almost couldn’t believe what my ears were hearing, it sounded like a completely different band and if that’s not bad enough, that band seemed suspiciously similar to My Chemical Romance. I was so disappointed that I deleted the album right after I fi

Technical Difficulties
2007-04-23 10:26:04
My computer died yesterday and I had to re-install Windows. Right now I’m going through the hurtful process of installing all the programs and adjusting all the settings to the way I like them to be. Thankfully, all my music was backed up on my external hard drive so I didn’t really lose anything important, except for all my bookmarks and feeds. It will take me a couple of days to get back on top of things so in the meanwhile, visit other awesome music blogs. Charlotte Gainsbourg - 5:55 (2006)
2007-04-28 16:08:26
Charlotte Gainsbourg (Website, Myspace) To be honest with you, until not too long ago, I had absolutely no idea Charlotte Gainsbourg is a musician. I didn’t know much about her at all, except for the fact that she’s Serge Gainsbourg’s daughter and that she was absolutely charming in one of the best movies I saw last year, The Science Of Sleep. When I read she released an album recently (in Europe it was released months ago but in the US it was released last week), I knew I have to give it try. Charlotte didn’t fail to charm me here either, she sings just like she acts - gently and almost so fragile that all you want to do is keep her from harm. The album shows quite a few sides to her, from radio-friendly perfect tunes like The Song That We Sing (the album’s first single) to gentle mellow numbers like Beauty Mark. There must be something in France lately, first Keren Ann and now this, I think it’s safe to say I’m in love. Stream: Charlotte

Keren Ann - Self-Titled (2007)
2007-04-26 11:25:26
Keren Ann (Website, Myspace) Up until recently, I didn’t know much of Keren Ann’s music except for Not Going Anywhere, which is wonderfully melodic and catchy but for some reason, it didn’t really make me want to dig into this singer/songwriter discography. When I found out she’s performing in these parts in late May, I decided to give her a chance and check what she’s all about. I’m not sure what the hell I was thinking before but I was certainly missing out because Keren Ann makes pretty music. I don’t think there’s a better word to describe it with. Her voice is incredibly soothing and the music composition is much more complex this time around, the album sounds complete, less poppy and much more mature. This is her fourth album in English (she also released two albums in French) and it was released in Europe three days ago and will be released in the US on May 8th. I’ll leave you with the two opening tracks of this album an

Five Music Related Websites I’m Addicted To
2007-04-25 12:59:53
When my computer died and I lost all my bookmarks a few days ago, I realized how much I’m addicted to certain websites. And when a day goes by without them, it becomes quite painful (or perhaps that’s just because I’m such a geek). So I decided to compile a list of those websites that are related to music (most of them are, because music is pretty much all I care about, hence this blog) and maybe, you’ll start sharing some of these addictions with me. By the way, Amplify is back on track and everything seems to be working fine so I’m resuming to posting on a daily basis. Last.fm - This website is pretty much my first stop every morning, when it comes to music. I joined it on August 2005 and have since managed to listen to almost 40,000 songs. Except for statisfying my inner statistics addict with charts every week, it also helps me discovering new bands very easily. First of all, every week, based on my weekly listening habits, I receive a bunch of rec

Team Sleep
2007-04-25 12:24:03
Team Sleep (Website, Myspace) While browsing yesterday through Natalie Portman’s Wikipedia page, I got reminded of this band, which I haven’t listened to for quite a while. To be honest, I always thought their album (which was released almost two years ago) is good but none of it really stuck with me or managed to become memorable. I used to listen to the Deftones quite a lot when I was growing up and I always loved Chino Moreno’s voice (espcially when he started to do more singing and less screaming) but for some reason, Team Sleep didn’t really do it for me. Until yesterday, that is. I put on their self-titled album and suddenly, everything made perfect sense. The beats from outer space, the heavily delayed guitar lines and the softer version of Chino’s voice. The album was (or demos off it) leaked years before it was actually released and when it did, it had quite a different track-list. Natalie Portman (the band’s best song in my opinion)

Brand New Make A Good Emo Band
2007-04-25 12:05:14
Brand New (Website, Myspace) These days, the term “emo” seems to be all over the place and usually people don’t mean it as a compliment. And while in my last post, 30 Seconds To Mars made a turn to the worst form of it, Brand New actually succeeds in doing the exact opposite and improve with every album. The band’s first album, Your Favorite Weapon was a regular pop-punk affair with power chords and teenage-angst lyrics and didn’t really have much standing out. Although the line “Last night I swallowed liquor and a lighter and this morning I threw up fire” off Sudden Death In Carolinais pretty sweet. With their sophomore release, Deja Entendu (”already heard” in French), the band sounded nothing like in their debut. Darker lyricalthemes and a darker sound in general, there was nothing pop-punk about Brand New and I really started to get into them. Jesse Lacey’s lyrics are emo indeed but there’s nothing I want to do but

The Veils - Nux Vomica (2006)
2007-04-30 20:05:48
The Veils (Website, Myspace) I remember listening to The Veils‘ debut album, The Runaway Founda couple of times and pretty much hating it. So I didn’t pay much attention when they released this album in September of last year but for some reason, I decided to give them a second chance and listened to this album. To my surprise, I ended up liking it enough to be writing about it here. Apparently, the original line-up disbanded in 2004 and only the lead singer and main songwriter, Finn Andrewsis left this time around. The change in line-ups must have done him good because this time around, there’re some really good songs in here and the overall sound has improved greatly. Listening to them, I get a feeling that they remind me of something/someone but I can’t point my finger on it. Perhaps a bit of The Cure’s theatrics or some of The Smiths‘ dramatic melodic shifts. I’ll leave you to hear it for yourself. Stream: The Veils - Not Yet The V

Kelly Jones - Only The Names Have Been Changed (2007)
2007-04-29 09:39:36
Kelly Jones (Myspace) When I heard that Kelly Jones, the Stereophonics‘ front man and main writer is set to release a solo album this year, I was definitely intrigued. While growing up, Performances & Cocktails (the band’s second album) was one of my favorites and even though they somewhat disappointed me with the albums they released afterwards, I never stopped loving them. I always thought they have a great sound and that Kelly is a talented writer and singer (although his voice is pretty much a either love it or hate it kind of thing). Kind of like Thom Yorke’s The Eraser, this album isn’t about going solo but something that happened by accident, in between takes for the band’s next album. But unlike The Eraser which I found weaker than most of Radiohead’s catalogue, on this album Kelly shines and makes me remember why I fell in love with him and his band’s music years ago. The album consists of ten songs about ten girls/women and stori

Tori Amos - American Doll Posse (2007)
2007-05-01 12:22:06
Tori Amos (Website, Myspace) Tori Amos‘ 8th album (I’m excluding Strange Little Girls because it featured only covers) is being released today. I already got a chance to listen to it a few times during the last two weeks or so and I’m still a bit undecided about it. First of all, it’s a lengthy affair, the album features 23 songs and clocks a little under a hour and twenty minutes so it’s a bit hard to stay concentrated for long. Knowing Tori and what a great songwriter she is, I always want to pay attention to everything, espcially her lyrics but when there’re so many songs it gets a bit tough. This album sounds more like a full band than just a singer/songwriter with her instrument of choice, there’re more guitars than ever and they accompany Tori’s piano work perfectly and help her create a fuller and chunkier sound. Like seen on the album cover, Tori created different characters through which she wrote songs about different subjec

Xiu Xiu
2007-05-08 14:24:10
Xiu Xiu (Website, Myspace) Xiu Xiu probably makes the weirdest music I have on my music collection (and also has one of the strangest names). Sometimes, all the different sounds on their songs form a mixture that sounds most definitely like noise but then it forms some kind of hook that you can’t really explain why it makes you smile. Or perhaps that’s just me. But I love these guys, Jamie Stewart’s over-the-top vocals and songwriting is where most of the magic lies, combined with experimental elements of pop, rock and many other genres in between. I realize that some people might listen to these songs and wonder where’s the music in it but I also think this band has a lot of potential to become an indie favorite. My favorite album of theirs is Fabulous Muscles which was released in 2004 and features my favorite song, I Luv The Valley OH (which is a pop classic, I assure you). And the second song is from The Air Force which was released in 2006. Stream: Xiu Xi

iLiKETRAiNS - Progress - Reform (2006)
2007-05-07 10:39:15
iLiKETRAiNS (Website, Myspace) I’m willing to forgive this band for its silly name because this mini-album or EP, however you want to call it, is absolutely fantastic. 32 minutes of guitar-based post-rock at its best and unlike most post-rock bands who rarely feature vocals in their music, David Martin’s voice is quite prominent and is an instrument by itself. Singing passionately and dramatically about history and world events, which may sound boring but in fact, it just makes the band’s music more interesting. The band had a few independent releases but finally signed to a label and already released a single off their debut album that should be released some time in the summer (you can check it out on their Myspace page). For now, I’ll leave you with two excellent tracks from this album, check them out if you like post-rock even a little bit. Sunday Delight

I apologize for the lack of updates in the last week or so but it’s been hectic with my birthday and FileDen’s bandwidth being exceeded. I uploaded all the files to FileXoom which offers more space and much more bandwidth so I don’t expect any problems. All the files from the beginning of the blog are available (except for the Compilations that I didn’t bother with) and they will stay for a month at least if not more. If something doesn’t work properly or if you’re interested in a file that expired, contact me. Amplify should be back to business tomorrow with regular daily posts. For now, I’ll leave you with a few covers I’m really enjoying lately, not all of them are particulary new but they’re all rather new to me so I thought I’d share. They’re all quite fantastic in my opinion. Rouge Wave - Debaser (Pixies) Placebo - Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush) Brand New - Oh Comely (Neutral Milk Hotel) Ashtar Command -

Voxtrot - Self-Titled (2007)
2007-05-10 08:46:36
Voxtrot (Website, Myspace) This band from Austin, Texas already released three EP’s but their first full-length album will be released on May 22. Their music isn’t anything particularly original or innovative but I’ve been really enjoying their rock/pop/indie blend as of late. Firecracker is probably my favorite track off the album, with the catchy chorus and cool rhythm, I’d have definitely chosen it to be the first single but instead, the band chose Blood Red Blood, the album closer. They remind me a bit of Belle And Sebastian and even Nada Surf at times and since I’m all about fun music lately, this album fits perfectly to my mood. Check these guys out, I have a feeling they’re going to get pretty big. Stream: Voxtrot - Blood Red Blood Voxtrot - Firecracker Download: Voxtrot - Blood Red Blood Voxtrot - Firecracker

Rogue Wave
2007-05-09 07:59:06
Rogue Wave (Website, Myspace) A lot of people downloaded this band’s cover to the Pixies‘ classic Debaser which I posted a couple of days ago. And while the cover is fantastic and definitely found a place in my favorite covers list, I wanted to write further about this band because their music makes me happy. And things that make you happy should be shared (that’s pretty much the logic behind this blog). Rogue Wave’s music is simple, catchy and completely lovable. I believe that the first thing I heard by them is Publish My Love which immediately caught my ear because it’s so sweet and fun. Then I got the album it’s taken from, Descended Like Vultures and completely fell in love with the delicate vocals, sweet lyrics and catchy melodies. You don’t really anything more than that to get me hooked. Just listen to Zach Rogue singing on Every Moment from their 2004 debut album Out Of The Show and you’ll understand what I mean. Pela
2007-05-12 15:20:50
Pela (Website, Myspace) Usually, when I write about a band and not an album, it’s a band that I know profoundly and enjoy several albums of. So instead of picking an album, I just write about a band in general. I only know Pela for a few short weeks and have only heard about eight songs by them but already I feel that they deserve a post here. Their debut album, Anytown Graffiti, was released on April 24 and while I still haven’t managed to get a hold of it, what I have heard off it is completely fantastic. The band describes themselves as an American rock & roll band which sounds just about right and are said to be influenced by Bruce Springsteen,  The Replacements and The Pixies among others. I’m really looking forward to hear their alum in its entirely but in the meantime, these songs definitely do the trick. The first song is from the All In Time EP they released in 2005 and the second song is from Anytown Graffiti. Stream: Pela - Latitudes Pela - Lost To

Interpol Vs. Editors
2007-05-16 12:23:16
Okay, so Interpol were here first, ever since 1998 in fact and entered our lives with their fantastic debut Turn On The Bright Lightsin 2002. They’re probably the most British-sounding American band there is and after their rise to fame, numerous similar bands popped all over the place, including Editors . I wrote before about these four guys from Birmingham, England and they’re definitely among my favorites in this genre. Surprisingly, both bands are releasing new albums in the upcoming months (Editors‘ An End Has A Start on June 25, Interpol’s Our Love To Admire on July 10) and have already released their first singles for our listening pleasure. Well, what is there to say? Both bands don’t really sound any different than they did on their previous releases but for me, Editors win this round. I’ll wait for the album releases for a full evaluation though. Stream: Interpol - The Heinrich Maneuver Editors - Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors D

The National - Boxer (2007)
2007-05-15 10:53:33
The National (Website, Myspace) I must admit that I’m new to The National. Even though these guys have been around since 1999, I only first heard their music about a month ago. I also don’t know any of their albums (yet) except for Boxer , their fourth album which will be released on May 22 (but you can stream it on their myspace now). I’m not sure what it is that made me check out these guys but I’m certainly thankful that I did because ever since I heard that haunting piano riff on Fake Empire, the album’s opening song, I knew that this is something I’m going to love. Mellow and atmospheric melodies, combined with the heartfelt voice of Matt Berninger make a perfect mixture of indie rock. They’re signed to Brassland, a label formed by two members of this band and also features my recent favorite band, Pela. The Power Of Music
2007-05-14 12:08:22
This morning I got some bad news, nothing life threatening or anything like that but disappointing nonetheless. Needless to say, I was bummed out. Then I found out that Tori Amos is coming to perform here in July and suddenly everything got better. It made me realize what kind of power music has and how much it effects me each and every day. More and more artists are coming to perform here which makes me really happy because the last time that happened was in the early 90’s and I was too young. So thank you Tori for cheering me up and because I want you to be happy as well, here are some fantastic covers by this talented lady. Also, a new header for Amplify, featuring one of my most prized possesions, an Epiphone G-400 guitar. Do you like it?
