The Maccabees - Colour It In (2007) 2007-04-18 10:13:32
The Maccabees (Website, Myspace)
The Maccabees were a Jewish national liberation movement that fought for and won independence from Antiochus IV Epiphanes of the Hellenistic Seleucid dynasty, they founded the Hasmonean royal dynasty and established Jewish independence in the Land of Israel for about one hundred years, from 165 BC to 63 BC. Wait, scratch that, The Maccabees are an indie rock band from Brighton, England and they came up with their band’s name by leafing through the Bible. I’m telling you, the places that people go to in order to find band names are unbelievable but hey, most band names are silly and meaningless anyway. This debut album isn’t original and it doesn’t offer anything new that hasn’t been done before by several British bands from the post-Libertines era. But the band does it well and I like this album, which isn’t something I can say for most bands that belong to that genre (which I just madeup). The album will be released Read more:Colour
Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007) 2007-04-18 10:12:40 ArcticMonkeys

I believe that enough has already been written about the Arctic Monkey’s success and hype, especially regarding their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. Like many people, I didn’t really understand what all the fuss is about. That album isn’t a bad album, it’s nice, catchy and has some fine moments but it’s not great either. For a band in their status, I’m sure there was a lot of pressure on them when they began recording this album, after all, plenty of bands with successful debuts have had sophomore slumps. I’m not sure what I expected this album to sound like but I can certainly say that it sounds better than I expected it to be. Brainstorm, the album’s opener track and lead single, is heavier and faster than anything on their previous album. I think they chose wisely when they picked it as their first single because it’s certainly one of the best songs on th Read more:Arctic Monkeys

Team Sleep 2007-04-25 12:24:03
Team Sleep
(Website, Myspace)
While browsing yesterday through Natalie Portman’s Wikipedia page, I got reminded of this band, which I haven’t listened to for quite a while. To be honest, I always thought their album (which was released almost two years ago) is good but none of it really stuck with me or managed to become memorable. I used to listen to the Deftones quite a lot when I was growing up and I always loved Chino Moreno’s voice (espcially when he started to do more singing and less screaming) but for some reason, Team Sleep didn’t really do it for me. Until yesterday, that is. I put on their self-titled album and suddenly, everything made perfect sense. The beats from outer space, the heavily delayed guitar lines and the softer version of Chino’s voice. The album was (or demos off it) leaked years before it was actually released and when it did, it had quite a different track-list. Natalie Portman (the band’s best song in my opinion)
The Veils - Nux Vomica (2006) 2007-04-30 20:05:48 Â
The Veils (Website, Myspace)
I remember listening to The Veils‘ debut album, The Runaway Founda couple of times and pretty much hating it. So I didn’t pay much attention when they released this album in September of last year but for some reason, I decided to give them a second chance and listened to this album. To my surprise, I ended up liking it enough to be writing about it here. Apparently, the original line-up disbanded in 2004 and only the lead singer and main songwriter, Finn Andrewsis left this time around. The change in line-ups must have done him good because this time around, there’re some really good songs in here and the overall sound has improved greatly. Listening to them, I get a feeling that they remind me of something/someone but I can’t point my finger on it. Perhaps a bit of The Cure’s theatrics or some of The Smiths‘ dramatic melodic shifts. I’ll leave you to hear it for yourself.

Sunday Delight 2007-05-06 17:27:31 I apologize for the lack of updates in the last week or so but it’s been hectic with my birthday and FileDen’s bandwidth being exceeded. I uploaded all the files to FileXoom which offers more space and much more bandwidth so I don’t expect any problems. All the files from the beginning of the blog are available (except for the Compilations that I didn’t bother with) and they will stay for a month at least if not more. If something doesn’t work properly or if you’re interested in a file that expired, contact me. Amplify should be back to business tomorrow with regular daily posts.
For now, I’ll leave you with a few covers I’m really enjoying lately, not all of them are particulary new but they’re all rather new to me so I thought I’d share. They’re all quite fantastic in my opinion.
