An Islay Fixer-Upper 2008-12-30 10:43:00
Now this is what you can call a Fixer
-Upper
, providing you have the nerves and the proper planning permission to start the works. There are many of these old ruined (farm)buildings on Islay
and it shows that there once lived much more people than today. In fact, the largest population was around 15,000 people in the early 1800s. Nowadays Islay has around 3,500 inhabitants. These old ruins somet
Portnahaven and Bay on a Beautiful Morning 2008-12-30 06:00:00
It was one of those unique and special days on Islay in May 2008. Clear blue skies, no wind and warm. A day to remember, specially when you are in Portnahaven, for me one of the most beautiful villages of Islay. When you walk the streets, listen to the seals and enjoy the peace and quiet while meeting the locals for a friendly chat you think you have arrived in paradise, far away from the hustl Read more:Beautiful

Killinallan Point Loch Gruinart 2008-12-29 15:21:00
On the road to Ardnave near Kilnave Chapel are some wonderful photo opportunities when you look over Loch Gruinart towards the north east coast of Islay. Killinallan Point consists of a dune systems with very interesting wind shaped sand figures and beautiful beaches surrounding the point. It's typically the place where the tides from the ocean meet the water in Loch Gruinart and from where the
Low Position of the Sun at Noon on Islay 2008-12-29 13:35:00
Claudio Riva, a regular visitor of my Islay
Weblog, sent me some beautiful pictures which he took in the last couple of days. After a cloudy start of his holiday he enjoyed a few clear and very bright days on Islay. He took this picture when the sun reached its highest position at noon, which is in fact incredibly low above the horizon. In this time of year Islay has around seven to eight hours
Port Ellen Lighthouse 2008-12-28 05:26:00
Dramatic view over Kilnaughton Bay towards the square lighthouse at Carraig Fhada. It was autumn 2007 when I took this picture on a very dark morning. The sun was trying hard to come out and only minutes later the sky cleared and we enjoyed a warm autumn day. It is amazing how fast the weather and light can change on Islay. Read more:Ellen

Loch Indaal Reflections 2008-12-27 11:26:00
After yesterday's picture from the storm arriving at Loch Indaal today a picture from two years ago when a rain shower passed Loch Indaal and left us with a beautiful sunset and ditto reflections on the loch. I took the picture from the head of Loch Indaal not far from the Gaelic Centre outside Bowmore. Often the time just after sunset can be magic and is often referred to as the Golden Hour. Dark Clouds over Loch Indaal Islay 2008-12-26 03:26:00
What's better than a sunny day? Well for me a day with heavy showers and sunny spells is the ultimate kick when I'm on Islay
. So many photo opportunities, ever changing and sometimes very threatening skies, rainbows and beautiful reflections on the lochs. With Loch Indaal in the heart of the island there are always good opportunities to catch these breathtaking moments from mother nature. Read more:Clouds

Dreaming of a White Islay Christmas 2008-12-24 06:55:00
Snow isn’t regular on Islay
and happens usually on higher grounds. But sometimes you can get lucky and this picture, from a good friend, shows how beautiful the island can be when it’s covered with a layer of snow. It seems appropriate for the time of year and I wish everyone a Merry Christmas
and hopefully with snow too! Read more:Dreaming

Winter Solstice 2008 at Loch Gruinart Islay 2008-12-23 10:11:00
A good friend sent me this picture from the winter solstice, 21 December 2008, at Loch Gruinart on Islay
. It was a grey day with rain and drizzle and only little real daylight. From now on the days will be longer and spring is, although still far away, coming closer. Read more:Solstice
Kilnave Chapel and Cross 2008-12-23 06:16:00
Visiting the historic sites on Islay makes one aware that so many events took place before us visitors set foot on this beautiful island. Take for instance Kilnave chapel, it once was the place of a terrible tragedy when, during the battle of Traigh Gruinart, 30 MacLeans sought sanctuary in the chapel hoping that the MacDonalds would respect holy ground. Thinking their chief was killed, the Mac Read more:Chapel
