2007-04-18 13:46:09
Although the average person can haul whatever they need to in the back of a pick-up truck, for someone who makes a living moving things, that just won’t suffice. Ford F350 Peterbilt Pickup Truck
2007-04-18 13:11:11
A little while back we wrote about a Dodge Peterbilt pickup conversion. It was pretty impressive. Little did we know at the time that someone else was working on another Peterbilt pickup, this time based on a Ford frame. As impressive as the Dodge based pickup was, this one is a step up. Lynn Mullinax of Albertville, Alabama had done all this before, building a Kenworth pickup that he liked a lot. Then one day, someone asked if he would sell it and when Lynn tossed out a number the fellow bought it on the spot. That left an empty parking spot and Lynn without a truck. Since he really liked that pickup he figured, why not do it again? This time he figured a Peterbilt was the way to go so he started looking for parts. It began with a 1996 Ford F350 one ton ambulance frame that had air ride suspension on the rear. I’ll let Lynn jump in here: I bought a salvage 2002 Freightliner FL60 truck and removed the Cummins 24 V, ISB 5.9 engine and Allison 1000 series automatic transmission, radia

Volvo Celebrates Its 80th Anniversary
2007-04-18 12:59:54
Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson, the founders of Volvo Volvo AV4, rolled off the production line at the plant in Hisingen, Gothenburg. Meanwhile, Volvo has developed into both a global manufacturer of commercial vehicles and a world-leading carmaker. Volvo’s founders were convinced that the company’s products had to be safe if Volvo was to make the grade as a vehicle manufacturer and 80 years of successful operations has proved the correctness of this approach. A modest start Back in the 1920s, business conditions for the hundreds of car manufacturers around the world were far from favorable. The world economy was only just beginning to recover after the war. Many of the smaller independent car manufacturers could not make ends meet, and were forced out of business. However, Volvo’s founders, Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson were not to be deterred. Determined to get a Swedish car industry under way, the two entrepreneurs, both of whom had background

EPA-certified trucks, trailers available
2007-04-18 12:50:57
Truck and trailer makers are offering 2007 models certified by the Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay program. The EPA says the trucks can save owners $11,000 annually while reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and air pollutants. Freightliner, International, Kenworth, Mack, Peterbilt and Volvo are participating in the program. SmartWay-designated models include the International ProStar and Volvo VN and, in 2008, the Freightliner Century Class S/T and Columbia. SmartWay-approved equipment can reduce fuel consumption 10 to 20 percent by reducing wind resistance, the EPA says. Each Smartway truck can save 2,000 to 4,000 gallons of diesel per year – or $5,680 to $11,360, at current retail prices. SmartWay trucks or engines have: Integrated cab-high roof fairings. Tractor-mounted side fairing gap reducers. Tractor fuel-tank side fairings. Aerodynamic bumpers and mirrors. Reduced-idling options such as auxiliary power units, generator sets, direct fired heaters, battery-powered HV

Big wheels keep on turning

In the Army, Sean McEndree was a truck driver and even though he is not a soldier anymore, he is still an “88 Mike.” McEndree drives a truck that honors fallen and wounded soldiers. The Peterbilt is hard to miss – it was painted by Ryan “Rhino” Templeton of Country Music Television’s “Trick My Truck” and “Chrome Shop Mafia,” and displays an Arlington Cemetery scene, a Purple Heart and an American flag. Tribute trucks aren’t a new thing, but what makes McEndree’s different is that he has experienced the life like those he honors with the rolling memorial. He was a specialist in the 96th Transportation Company in April 2004 when the unit was on a convoy to Taji, Iraq, he said Saturday while sitting in his living room in Copperas Cove, surrounded by family members and friends who had just spent the day celebrating his youngest son’s first birthday. McEndree’s former company is part of the 180th Transportation

Dump truck damages bridge on Interstate 5
2007-04-18 12:42:12
A dump truck with its trailer bed in the raised position crashed into the North Fork of the Lewis River bridge on southbound Interstate 5, then was struck by a tractor-trailer early Thursday morning. According to the Washington State Patrol, a 1996 Kenworth dump truck driven by David Olson, 43, of Woodland left the yard of Groat Brothers Transportation in Woodland around 2:30 a.m. with the trailer’s bed upright. The raised bed snagged some power lines in Woodland. Olson continued, entering the southbound lane of I-5 from Woodland. About a mile down the freeway, the trailer hit a metal support beam of the North Fork bridge. That caused the dump container to come off the trailer frame, blocking the right lane. Olson stopped a short distance away, also blocking the right lane. Soon after, a 2005 Volvo tractor-trailer owned by Swift Transportation and driven by Timothy Price, 21, of Bend, Ore., collided with the dump container lying on the freeway. The dump container flew into the ai

Ford Peterbilt Pickup Truck Conversion

Some guys just aren’t satisfied with what you find in the showroom. Take Lynn Mullinax, for instance. Lynn likes big pickup trucks, but anyone with money can buy an International CXT, Lynn had his mind set on a Peterbilt. Of course, small problem, Peterbilt doesn’t make a pickup, so Lynn started thinking about what he would need. Let’s see, frame, engine, cab, tools, time, skill, … no problem, he had what he needed. So out he goes into the garage and 3 1/2 years later comes back out with this beauty. Actually, this was Lynn’s second truck, he built a Kenworth before but was foolish enough to put a price on it when someone asked if he would sell it. Sure enough, the guy bought it and he had the money but no truck. So, back out to the garage. He says this one isn’t for sale.

USA Truck reports net income down 97% in quarter
2007-04-20 13:28:10
Net income at USA Truck Inc. decreased almost 97 percent in the first quarter of this year, compared to 2006, the company reported today. In releasing the quarterly financial results, company President and CEO Jerry D. Orler cited initially weak freight demand combined with fleet growth, along with operational costs and adverse claims caused by poor winter weather conditions.“Demand for truckload services was softer than any quarter we have experienced in several years. However, freight demand did improve from lows in January and February to a steadier freight environment in March,” Orler said in a statement. “We began the first quarter with more fleet capacity than freight availability. That imbalance was caused by our fleet growth in 2006, our firm stance on rate increases in 2006 and the decelerating freight conditions over the last few quarters. Compounding this problem, we manned over 100 additional tractors that did not previously have drivers during the fourth quarter of 2

Port traffic expected to break record in July
2007-04-20 13:27:16
Container port traffic is expected to break an all-time record in July says a report by the National Retail Federation and Global Insight. A monthly “Port Tracker Report” by the two groups, a retail trade association and a provider of economic and financial information, respectively, says a continued increase in container volume in the next six months will make for a busy season indeed. “Port Tracker” author and Global Insight economist Paul Bingham told Logistics Magazine that the system can be expected to withstand the heavy traffic, with the only exception being the Port of Vancouver, B.C., where disruptions have been caused by inclement winter weather and a February UTU strike against CN railroad. The report comes from a survey of the ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach; Oakland; Tacoma; Seattle; New York/New Jersey; Hampton Roads; Charleston; and Savannah. Those ports handled 1.28 million21-foot Equivalent Units in February, the most recent month for which data are available.

2007-04-24 15:56:03
The quality of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles is virtually equal to that of Toyota and Nissan, according to the first quarter 2007 model-year Global Quality Research System (GQRS) report. Ford, Lincoln, Mercury brand vehicles are at 1456 TGWs compared with Nissan at 1457 and Toyota at 1453 TGWs per 1,000 vehicles. “Our latest performance continues a trend that has seen Ford Motor Company significantly improve vehicle over the last few years” said Bennie Fowler, vice president, Ford Global Quality. “We have more work to do, but there is no question that Ford Motor Company builds world-class vehicles. We can compete with anybody.” Ford Motor Company reduced its corporate TGW rate by eight percent, bettering the overall industry improvement of two percent. Toyota Tundra Sees Four Stars In Safety Knockout
2007-04-24 15:48:03
In recent vehicle testing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the all-new 2007 Toyota Tundra four out of five stars in driver and passenger safety. The same tests were performed on the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, and Dodge Ram 1500 pickup which all ended with a five star rating. NHTSA’s crash testing consist of frontal, driver, and passenger performed at 35 miles per hour into an fixed barrier. The press has been all over the news like the paparazzi over a Britney Spear’s sighting. There’s now wonderment that one of the biggest vehicle launches in Toyota’s history may put a small dent into its sales. Will this really cause a huge decrease in Tundra sales even though the company has an outstanding reputation on building reliable vehicles?

Edmunds Sees Truck Wars Heating Up
2007-04-24 15:45:53
Before its launch last month, the 2007 Toyota Tundra threatened to displace valuable truck sales from the domestic automakers. Surprisingly, Tundra sales have not been as strong as expected, so Toyota has begun offering incentives on this virtually brand new vehicle. Other automakers have responded with incentive programs of their own. “Toyota is doing whatever it takes to meet its sales targets for Tundra - 200,000 units this year,” noted Michelle Krebs, Senior Editor of Edmunds’ AutoObserver.com. “So far, most new Tundra buyers are previous Toyota Tundra owners, not ‘conquests’ from other brands as Toyota had hoped and other automakers had feared.” “The Tundra’s relatively high price seems to have alienated many potential buyers who might otherwise have been swayed to consider a well-equipped, Texas-built truck produced by an import automaker with a solid reputation,” said Edmunds.com’s Senior Analyst Jesse

Fleet Makes “Bealine” for Cleaner Diesel Engines
2007-04-30 12:25:50
The Houston-based trucking company is converting 24 of its 36 diesel engines to newer technology with the help of an $871,110 federal grant. When Bealine Service Company decided to replace the majority of the engines in its aging fleet with cleaner-burning diesel engines, the Houston-based intrastate hauling company was able to obtain nearly $900,000 in federal funding administered regionally through the Houston-Galveston Area Council’s (H-GAC) Clean Vehicles program. Bealine was granted $871,110 to help replace 24 of the 36 diesel engines in its fleet through the H-GAC program, designed to distribute federal funding to help area businesses and local governments convert their fleets to more environmentally friendly vehicles. Bealine qualified for the Clean Vehicles grant because the majority of its operations take place in the eight-county Houston non-attainment area, where air quality does not currently meet EPA standards. With the grant in place for new engines, Bealine

Medium Truck Tire Shortage Unintended Consequence of 2007 Diesel Regulations
2007-04-30 12:13:46
There is record demand for medium truck tires and a corresponding shortage of supply. Besides the cyclical upturn in truck sales, the increased demand is also being fueled by the upcoming 2007 diesel emission standards. There is record demand for medium truck tires and a corresponding shortage of supply. Besides the cyclical upturn in truck sales, the increased demand is also being fueled by the upcoming 2007 diesel emission standards. Many fleets are pre-buying trucks ahead of the EPA deadline to avoid the all-new 2007 engines, which are anticipated to cost more, require more frequent oil drains, and have an unknown reliability history. The pre-buying spike is creating artificially high demand for new trucks, which is expected to drop dramatically once 2007 production commences. This cycle will probably repeat itself in 2010 when the next EPA diesel engine emission change is set to occur. This cyclicality has historical precedent based on the tire shortage that occurred in

Trends in Medium-Duty Truck Sales for 2005-06
2007-04-30 12:07:39
While record-high gasoline and diesel prices are softening light-duty vehicle sales – especially large SUVs – sales of medium-duty trucks continue to surge. Demand for commercial medium-duty trucks has been on an upward trajectory since 2003. While record-high gasoline and diesel prices are softening light-duty vehicle sales – especially large SUVs – sales of medium-duty trucks continue to surge. Demand for commercial medium-duty trucks has been on an upward trajectory since 2003. Three key reasons are driving these production increases: a stronger business environment, pre-buying to avoid the upcoming 2007 EPA diesel emission standards, and the need to replace older trucks. As a result, the medium-duty truck market is expected to grow by 37 percent in 2005. The growth is anticipated to continue well into the 2006 calendar year. Another reason medium-duty sales continue to be strong is the nationwide shortage of truck drivers, especially those with a commercial drive
