Vote Early, Vote Often
2006-10-22 21:29:56
Or as Bizzyblog says, don’t vote early at all.  He advocates waiting until election day, so that one can see more of the candidates and how they perform under stress. My take on things?  I vote early.  What are the odds than any real (truthful) information is going to be revealed in the last two weeks that hasn’t already come out?  This is prime time for false smear campaigns.

Google Reader - A Sharing Oops
2006-10-22 21:23:22
Looks like Stephanie Booth found a really annoying problem with Google ’s sharing javascript. If anyone runs into popups on this site, let me know.

RSS Advertising Options
2006-10-22 19:23:14
I don’t have advertisements in the RSS feed for this site (so if you want to get my content ad-free, that’s one way to do it).  On the other hand, that probably means I’m missing out on a few dollars I could earn from ads in the feeds.  I haven’t done it yet, and don’t plan to do it soon.  Advertisements in feeds aren’t a big annoyance, but it is something that annoys me a bit when I’m browsing through the feeds in Google Reader.  I understand you gotta pay the bills, but so far I am doing that without RSS advertising, and that’s ok with me. If I ever want to make the RSS ad plunge, the folks over at Pro Blogger have a nice summary of the options.

It's the Democratic Union Way
2006-10-22 19:10:00
Apparently minority leader Nacy Pelosi has indicated that if the Democrats take control of the house, she’ll fill the leadership positions by seniority, rather than by any logical way which would make sense, you know, like competence or knowledge or leadership ability.

Signed, Sealed, Soon to be Delivered
2006-10-22 19:03:34
This morning while eating my breakfast, I voted. Partly because I’m a good citizen, and partly because “I already voted” stops the elections phone call workers in thier tracks.

Blogspot: Broken
2006-10-22 04:31:43
I haven’t been able to pull up any Blogspot content, including the official Google blog, for about an hour now… I swear, Blogspot is Google’s least polished and least functional service.

Blogspot: Why Hide the Feed?
2006-10-21 23:36:57
Here’s a random vent about a random annoyance: why doesn’t Blogspot display a feed link on its hosted blogs?  Make it easy for the users: put a feed link on the site.

A PayPerPost Puzzle: 10
2006-10-21 22:22:00
The end is near, but not quite here. No later than tomorrow afternoon, all of the pieces for PayPerPost ’s puzzle will be released. In a plan to drive traffic to their blog marketing service, they’re releasing the pieces one by one across a bunch of blogs. The first person to put them together will win a prize. The puzzle will reveal what is known as “Blue Monster”, a new marketing program from PayPerPost. If you’re looking for pieces, search for payperpostbluemonster - and here’s another one:

Don't Rely on Random Rankings
2006-10-21 22:19:07
Web stats can be important.  As a webmaster or blogger, you want to know where your traffic is coming from, what pages they are viewing, and how many folks are patronizing your online presence.  That said, don’t get too hung up on rankings.  Sure, it’s nice to know how many people that Google or Technorati or whomever thinks care about you, but as pointed out by the folks at WebMetricsGuru, those numbers don’t always add up or correspond with each other.

From the No Duh Obama Department
2006-10-23 17:53:05
Suposedly Barack is considering a run for the presidency.  No shit. And once he really looks hard at things, and talks to some advisors with a clue, they’ll tell him to wait a bit.

Washington State US Senate Race - I'm With Bruce
2006-10-23 17:50:50
As I posted earlier, I voted this weekend.  And for the first time I marked the box for a Libertarian.  Bruce Guthrie is the Libertarian candidate for the US Senate seat currently held by Maria Cantwell.  Bruce can do far better.  Check out his website and read about his positions on the issues.

MyEclipse - Affordable Dev Tools
2006-10-23 17:47:37
Development is fun, but sometimes it’s a pain in the wallet when quality tools either cost a lot of money or require WAY too much labor to learn how to use them. If you’re using Eclipse for your development, you’ll want to check out the Eclipse Plugin called MyEclipse which looks like it does a whole lot, for as little as $30. Their plugin should take care of efficiency issues and provide a good environment for J2EE, Ajax, XML, web, and other development. Check it out.

KATU: Clueless
2006-10-23 19:09:03
How many of you that live in the thriving, sprawling suburb of Salmon Creek would call the area “rural” or “remote”?  That’s right, I didn’t think you would. Don’t worry, KATU will lie about the area for you.

WordPress MU Released
2006-10-23 19:06:18
WordPress MU (a multi-user, highly-scalable version of WordPress) has finally hit version 1.0. This is a very good thing, because as a blogger, dealing with Movable Type in a huge, multi-blog system, is a pain in the ass.

Heh… Office Space
2006-10-23 18:30:28
Here’s something that sounds interesting, it’s The Home Office From Hell contest. Offices2Share.com is a website that consolidates and offers small office space nationwide, which makes it easy to find some ready-to-use space and get out of that home office that might not be working out as well as you’d hoped. For this contest, go to the website and enter the top 10 reasons why you need to move out of your home office from hell. You can even upload a video documenting your home office if you think that will help your cause. The winner gets up to $12,000 for use for office rent for a year.

Google Earth Adds Election Data
2006-10-23 18:24:57
Now you can fire up Google Earth and turn on the 2006 Election gude to add congressional district maps and links to all the candidates websites from within Google Earth . If nothing else, it’s interesting to view the convoluted boundaries of the districts. Because I’m both geeky and political.

It's a Union. Duh.
2006-10-24 06:41:18
I’m not sure why BlogTown PDX and b!x are at all shocked by the absurd statements by the Portland Police Offier’s union regarding the folks they beat that have died in custody. It’s a union.  The number one purpose is to cover their own asses and protect thier own jobs, regardless of the legal, moral, or other issues involved.  They’re doing the same thing that every other union does.

Disruption

Yahoo Pushing del.icio.us, Downplaying MyWeb
2006-10-25 08:36:01
I can’t say how happy this makes me.  I used MyWeb for all of 15 minutes before deciding it was bloated, slow, and made me go through far too many hoops to do simple tasks. Long live del.icio.us.

Google Updates Alerts; Still Missing RSS
2006-10-28 06:58:28
I see that Google has updated its Alerts feature to now work with the blog search. But they only get half credit for blog cluefulness, since they don’t have a way to generate the Alerts as RSS feeds. Back to Technorati, I guess…

Another Reason to Vote for Bruce Guthrie
2006-10-27 07:36:51
Maria Cantwell ranks 99th (out of 100, duh) in the latest Congressional “power ranking.” In other words, there’s only one other Senator more useless to their constituents.

Jack That
2006-10-27 07:21:46
Today as part of my new position in my day job I received a shiny new laptop for my use. As I was putting things together I noticed it has quite a distinguished three-plug-in-a-straight line adapter. I figured that the power bricks are probably expensive and I shouldn’t lose mine. Replacement could be a pain. Then I remembered a saga at a previous job where the actual jack on the laptop went bad. Getting that part was quite difficult. The fact that tonight someone sent me a link to a company called PowerJacksOnline which… you guessed it, provides laptop power jacks was quite an interesting coincidence. Looks like they have a TON of them. Bookmark it in case you need one.

Google Won't Censor Aussie Racism
2006-10-26 16:58:31
Sounds like Google is catching some heat for their refusal to pull down some allegedly racist blogs on their services.  They are claiming they won’t do it without a court order. Good. It’s not the place of a hosting company to decide which content they agree with or which they might find offensive.  Free speech trumps hate speech.  As pointed out in one of the Slashdot comments, racist speech can be countered with other speech.  Censor ship can’t be countered. As a footnote, this is the first time I’ve seen a story on Slashdot in a long time that hadn’t been beaten to death in the blogosphere over the previous few days.

Green Thumb Anyone?
2006-10-26 16:39:27
File this under the “interesting idea to assimilate these” category. There’s a website specifically devoted to collecting and showing landscaping photos, for the purpose of people to view the photos and get ideas of things to do in their yard. According to their website they have over 2700 photos of landscaping ideas to view and inspire people. I spent a little bit of time on the site and they have some photos of some interesting things to try out. My biggest problem is that I usually don’t have a lot of “spare time” to take care of yardwork but perhaps I just need to find some inspiration and get off my butt
