I did my best Bill Simmons since I actually got the watch the game Monday Night. A resounding Eagles win. Even without West36. It's kinda long and somewhat boring, but a little fun too.Eagles v. Packers, Monday October 2, 8:30 p.m.7:32 - I receive a text message from my friend Paul who's at the game. "No Westbrook tonight"7:35 - He's right. ESPN.com has confirmed this fact. This has me a little worried.7:38 - Another text, this time from Steph, "No Westbrook, L"7:46 - In Buckhaulter we trust.7:48 - How crazy is the online coverage for Monday Night Football these days. Check this out. It's crazy. Anything and everything you want to know about the Monday night games.8:26 - Just got back from the Free Press office as the segment on Charlie Pena wraps up. Every time I see that I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. What a cool thing to be able to do? And to see McNabb and all the other players being so nice to him brings a tear to my eye.8:27 - Speaking of brining

one game
2006-09-20 22:07:00
The Phillies are one game behind the Pa-gers (The constant flux that is the Padres and Dodgers for 1st) in the National League Wild Card race. Last year, I feel like I was excited about our chances this late in the season, but if memory serves me right, we were about three games behind at this point and we got some help.As much as I can still feel the sting when I found out we won but the Astros bested the Cubs to keep us out of the postseason for the 12th straight season, I'm getting happier day by day.I feel like our pitching staff is the most solid out of the teams we have left to play on our schedule (Cubs(1), Marlins(6), Nationals (3), Astros (1)). 11 games left. I'm feeling good about our chances, just thought I'd let you know.Hopefully once I get settled in here updates will come more often and with lots more detail as they had in the summer months, but for now, all you need to know is the Phillies are one game out of the Wild Card lead, and if we get it, I know we won't let

2006-09-12 19:24:00
First, let's get some business out of the way...This is awesome. Couldn't be happier, and it's very good news that it happened in the off season. This is also awesome, but it's old news by now, and it was only the Texans. You may think I forgot about the Iggles, but I didn't and I'll have a long piece on them soon... but right now, we have a team in the playoff hunt, and I think I found the culprit of our mediocrity. Not only for this season, but since 1993. I really do think I've solved it.This. This is the problem.I direct your attention to the poll at the bottom left of your screen. Feel free to vote your own way. Many others did. As of 1:27 pm on September 12, the result was an astounding 80.5% NO and "19.5%" "YES." Now don't get me wrong, I realize we're a long shot to make it, and I'm pretty much at the extreme end of the optimism spectrum, but you've gotta think somehow, some way that the morale and beliefs of the fans affects the team.Take the Eagles for example. I love baseball so much that it forces me to hate it.Case in point. My friend Joe watched practically the entire game, but had to leave his dorm just before the bottom of the ninth inning. He was going to see Invincible on the night before the Eagles season opener, which obviously can't be missed. Especially since the movie is so good.Anyway, my point is that after Joe left, he called me upwards of five times for up-to-the-second updates. He was literally in the movie theatre, watching previews... watching the actual movie and I was doing my best play-by-play as Conine almost won it and Rhodes blew it.It is this unquestionable bond to the Phillies that I and many of my friends have that fuels this love hate relationship.Let's hope he still enjoyed the movie. After all, Cole has a mission to accept.--Statman

baseball
2006-09-10 04:38:00
There is absolutely, positively no other relationship than a "love-hate" one that someone can have with baseball . It's simply impossible. And right now, let me tell you. I hate baseball. Right now, I REALLY hate baseball, but then I look at the game overall and where our season is right now... and I love it.We should be happy to be 72-70 and 1.5 games out of the playoffs. Then again, 0.5 with a chance to sweep looks that much better. And in all honesty, I've never seen a team leave 17 runners on base before (even if four of them were due to Ryan Howard walks).Whatever higher power up there was watching tonight's game really must not like the Phillies and enjoys watching fans sit around the radio, TV, computer screen, what have you, screaming, punching and feeling more ups and downs in their heart that one would in an actual heart attack.Cole Hamels. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to pitch the game of your life. Not your MLB career, not your professional career, not

I've been bust the last two days with fantasy football... our league just had the draft and here's the team I ended up with. The 12 team keeper league is in it's 6th year.S. Alexander- SEAL. Fitzgerald- ARIS. Jackson- STLD. Davis- HOUC. Palmer- CIND. Culpepper- MIAT.J. Houshmandzadeh- CIND. Rhodes- INDE. Kennison- KCV. Morency- HOUL. J. Smith- PHIDallas D/STR. Longwell- MINA. Wilson- ARIJ. Cutler- DEN----------Going to the Phillies game tonight, so expect a detailed account and for our tea to be only two games under .500 once it's over. The only team the Phillies play with a winning record for the remainder of the season are the Mets (3-game series at Shea).--Statman

24-5
2006-08-16 19:34:00
Okay, this is getting pretty ridiculous. Not even Jose Reyes can save you now.The Mets certainly don't look like the first place team that has been ruling the National League for basically the entire season. That honor now belongs to the Phillies and possibly the Dodgers. Even the Cardinals have been slumping and the Reds just aren't a solid ball club.Granted our pitching is still a huge question mark, but if our offense keeps scoring runs like they've been it won't really matter.Bill Simmons started off his column today by saying that the NL has become AAAA. A hefty notch below the American League, the Curt Schilling to our Nelson Figueroa, a no-good, no-DH-ing, sack of mediocre talent. And in a way he's right, there are tons of teams that would easily have the NL wild card, but in that "lesser league" the Phillies are holding their own. They've shown they can play with the big boys (despite losing the Reds series) and always seem to come on strong around this time of year. The P

a little payback
2006-08-15 10:53:00
I'm pretty sure 13-0 is all I need to say today.Perdro lasted 1 inning. Awesome. Simply awesome.Oh, and Rollins continued his power surge and broke Granny's record, hitting his 18th homer of the season last night. I love how he turns it on every August. Of couse it makes me wonder why the hell he can't do it all season, but I'll take this, that's for sure.Flash might need re-wiring.Howard is threatened.... and getting a reputation.Hamels is really cool.--Statman

the resurgance of the phillies
2006-11-02 06:51:00
and hopefully this blog as well...After a series of recent horrible events involving Philadelphia sports franchises (I feel as though I don't need to go into much detail, but I'll tell you that it began with the firing of Hitchcock.) Anyway, I logged onto my google personalized homepage this morning and was excited to see an article about the Phillies being willing to offer a lot of money to try and grab Soriano. Whether or not this is a statement of fact remains to be see, and they'll probably just end up dicking around with us like they always do, making it look like they want the high-priced players, but then never act on anything, but that's neither here nor there. What I was really interested in, even more so than the brief article by Todd Zolecki, were the comments at the end of the write-up. Now don't get me wrong, I love the Eagles with all of my heart (yes, even after Sunday's performance... I still love them) but it gave me great pleasure to see that the Phillies gained

For the second-straight post, I'll do my best to honor a request I received from one of my thousands upon thousands of readers. An e-mail entitled, "Please blog about this, my head hurts."And for it we travel to the league that's in the worst shape in the "big four." Despite that fact that Philadelphia is a fantastic NHL town (fourth in the nation in average attendance), it's really struggling elsewhere -- as close as New Jersey and Pittsburgh, both big states/cities with teams filled with rich history -- where they can’t even draw 10,000 people on a nightly basis. Aside from taking the easy way out and attributing the severe lack of interest to the strike, I think the NBA's partnership with ESPN and its family of networks is really what has cemented basketball's third-place spot in the

The best Superbowl I've ever watched? No.I think Rams against Titans in 1999 was better on a few levels. The overall quality of the game was superior and despite the fourth quarter lead changes last Sunday, that game didn't come down to the final play, a mere yard and a half away from deciding the World Champion. Nothing gets much better than that. But despite the fact that it wasn't the "best" game, it may have been one of the most exciting. I'm surprised that I'm writing that because I fully expected to sit at my friends' Superbowl party with my hands folded in disgust/disbelief that one of the two teams I hate most was going to clutch the Lombardi Trophy in three hours. I wouldn't normally dislike the Patriots as much if I wasn't living in New England, but constantly dealing with their e

Just under a year after my previous post, I've come to the realization that I'm not good at blogging. I don't think I ever was. But for a good portion of 2006-07, I gave it a Nick Punto-like try -- the talent may not have been there, but there's no doubt I worked hard.Since my last post -- which obviously kept readers glued to their computer screen in hopes of joining me in a journey through the thrills and spills of my most memorable Phillies season ever -- I've taken a lot of journalism classes. Hopefully my writing has improved because of it. That's not to say my blogging has, especially because I'm out of practice, but I'd like to think what I write for The Daily Free Press exhibits marked improvment. That's neither here nor there, simply a lame excuse to get the FreeP website linked u

city six?
2007-01-11 03:23:35
You probably don't know it, but there's a team in this city that currently has a longer winning streak than the Eagles.Yes, the "lowly" Drexel Dragons are riding the highs of a 10-game victory run that's left them garnering some national attention for the first time in, well, ever. Everyone knows about the vast legacy that surrounds "Big 5 Basketball" but the Dragons are looking to rewrite a little bit of that history. Or, at the very least, get some respect. And while a 10-game streak in college basketball's Colonial Athletic Association may not be as impressive as a six game stint in the National Football League, it's still remarkable in its own right. The Dragons received 11 votes in the AP Top 25 and 9 in the USA Today/ESPN polls. Not too shabby, if you ask me.What's even better is what

It's time to give ourselves a nice pat on the back Philadelphia sports fans. As the national media was trying to paint our fan base as a group of depressed, downtrodden and defeated people just awaiting yet another failure, we really managed to hold it together. Heck! We were down right confident heading into that game against the Giants. I can't remember the last time we were so sure of one of our sports teams heading into a big game. Normally we like to imagine, discuss and predict every possible worse case scenario that could happen to break out spirits. This time, we seemed convinced that we not only could beat the Giants, but we were going to. Maybe because we had nothing to lose. None of us thought we would be in the position to even have to worry about a playoff game, so what do we
