Panda Riot 2006-06-21 08:30:00 Yesterday a 6 track demo by promising Philly 2 piece Panda
Riot arrived in the mailbox and this morning I gave the songs a real close listen in the car ("Hits In The Car" *s*) on my way to work. The band is positioned in the shoegaze/dream-pop genre and it shouldn't take very long, before your understand why "the pandas" have been compared to the "legendary" My Bloody Valentine. The influence is quite obvious, so if you're a fan of the classic shoegaze sound, this most certainly is a band you should keep a very close eye on! The duo (trio if you add the drum machine) is currently working on a full length album, and if the demo is any indication of what to expect (the songs are damn great), it could easily end up being a fantastic one. Unfortunately no info is available on any release date (accordingly the record should be done by the end of July, and then sent to various labels hoping that one of them will release it), but check the webpage for news, shows (if you happen to live clos

because I was searching for information on the forthcoming album by Danes Tiger Baby. Their second album called Noise Around Me will be released in Denmark on April 24, but hopefully the band will post a few "appetizers" very soon.Apparently Souvenir Records has only released albums by 4 different artists so far, but 3 of them definitely sound like they are worth a closer look.Huckster - Drives Me Crazy [MP3]Sounds a bit "cheesy" at first, but somehow this song is completely irresistible.Kalimoto - Everything Goes [MP3]Their music is described as a mix of "everything". Really not that complex, but still very good!Tiger Baby - Shy [MP3]I mentioned this one a long time ago, because it was and still is availble from the band's webpage. Catchy and dancable.
"Hits In The Car" Compilation January - February 2006... 2006-02-28 08:44:00 A few years back I created/burned music CD's almost every week, but I rarely do it anymore. Admittedly my CD writer is crap, but the music files on the computer and the official CD's I purchase can easily keep me entertained, so I don't feel like adding further to that mix. But this Sunday I thought it was time to create a CD containing (some of) the best songs I've mentioned in my blog the past two months.19 songs made the cut, but after listening to the CD a few times, I'm not really sure if I picked the best ones. And quite a few bands had more than one song to choose from, but I decided that only one song per artist was allowed. Songs by a few bands like Celestial and Budapest would have been on the CD if the links for the songs hadn't been dead. It's always easy to complain or have second thoughts, but in the end I think the result was acceptable (or maybe even a little more than that). And I'm still amazed that it's possible to create a music CD like this for free (or fo Read more:January

Postal Blue... 2006-02-27 17:21:00 2 months ago I'm certain I would have sworn that I would never listen to a Brazilian band. But last month I heard Pale Sunday (great band!) and today I came across Postal
Blue. Not highly original (Postal Blue does sound a LOT like a mix of Belle & Sebastian and The Lucksmiths), but again (for the second time today) it doesn't really matter what (or who) a band sounds like, as long as the band writes great music. And this band writes wonderful and catchy indie pop.WebpageMyspaceWeather Sensitive [MP3]I Know Where Your Dreams Go [MP3]Puzzle [MP3]Being You [MP3]

Starring Me... 2006-02-23 21:44:00 Starring Me, a 3 piece band from Florida, released their second album Perfect In The Night in 2005. The entire album is available as a free download from the band's webpage and the songs vary quite a lot, although the description of the album given by the band leaves you with an impression that it was meant to be a kind of romantic concept album. The band happily mixes Dreampop, Indie, Emo and once in a while you get the feeling that they have been listening to quite a few shoegaze bands as well. The production isn't flawless and not every song is top notch, but still it was quite a pleasure working my way through the songs. As always when I find good stuff like this, I'm puzzled why such a band hasn't been able to reach a much wider audience.WebpageMyspaceLosing My Balance [MP3]Carousel [MP3]Yellow Purse [MP3]
Salem... 2006-02-22 10:21:00 I think my first reaction when I listened to the music of Danish band Salem
was something like "what on earth is this?", because it didn't really sound like anything I'd normally listen to. Then I took a further look at the band's description of the music and suddenly everything made more sense. According to that, the band writes the music with a never filmed Spaghetti Western in mind and it's the ambition of the band to be featured on the soundtrack of Tarantino movie, which I believe is a very plausible explanation for the sound the band has adopted/created. Lots of bands have ridiculous ambitions, but for once I think that a band has a (more than) fair chance of fulfilling its dream. Because not only are the songs very good (a couple of listens are required, but they really grow on you), but they also create exactly the right atmosphere and illusions in your mind! Two major Danish newspapers listed the album From The Riverbank among the 10 best Danish albums of 2005, so I guess

From the beautiful island of Bornholm comes the new band Majorian and in Copenhagen we find the more experience duo Astonishment. The later will release their second album called The Rest Is Silence in June, while Majorian still hasn't been signed to a label. Mushi +++ 2007-05-15 09:22:00 My current favorite album is the recent release by Danish one-man project Mushi (in real life known as Rasmus Fynbo). The album (released March 19) is called Unfairytales and has received some pretty good reviews in the Danish media (you can read a few here if you understand Danish). The music varies quite a lot throughout the 12 tracks on the album, and sounds like he's done his best to mix as many musical genres as possible. Whether you want Balkan rhythms, western themes, cabaret, country or the straight forward pop/rock song begging for airplay; it's all there and it never gets boring. However the real strength of the album is that he never gets carried away (and turns the album into an experimental playground), but instead remembers that the great and catchy tune must always be present. I bought the album because I enjoyed his 2004 release Unbelonging (download it for free here) and hoped that the new album would be equally good. But it wasn't. It was even better!+ Pieces of No

But here are two really great ones and hopefully I'll be able to add a few comments later:+ Warm Morning - Behind The Curtain+ Michael - Today Will Be The SameAnd if you have a couple of minutes I hope that you'll vote for 2:26 by Green Concorde and help the band make Tjeklisten (vote here).+ 2:26
Another OMD Cover... 2007-05-18 08:40:00 Some of you might recall that I posted Klaus & Kinski's cover of the OMD track Souvenir 3 weeks ago and today I came across another OMD cover. This time it's If You Leave covered by (now dissolved) US indie pop band Free Loan Investments and once again I'm really not sure what to think. OMD used to be one of my favorite bands, so I've probably listened to this track a thousand times and never before thought of it as a twee pop song!+ If You LeaveAnd below a few other OMD covers previously posted in the blog (please feel free to drop me a line if you know of any other OMD covers)+ Klaus & Kinski - Souvenir+ Foretaste - Secret+ More Than Milk has a cover of Enola Gay by The Faint.Be persistent and it will pay off. Last.fm - Stuff 2007-05-16 13:51:00 For a change I'm having a very quiet day at work, so I'm currently exploring Last.fm hoping that I'll find some interesting or unknown stuff. There's lots and lots to choose from, though unfortunately most of it is garbage. But every now and then I stumble upon something worth posting.....+ Anything Box - CleanSeems like this is a track recorded way back in 2001? Old or not, it's a really cool and utterly catchy new wave/synthpop track!+ Hungry Lucy - FearfulUS duo tagged as darkwave/gothic. Fearful probably doesn't fit that label completely as it is more of an up-tempo electronic pop tune. Last.fm - Free Downloads chart 2006-12-21 08:57:00 I mentioned the Free Downloads
chart over at last.fm in my post yesterday, but I thought I should put a little more focus on the chart in today's post. Why? Several reasons why? First of all! Wouldn't it be great if this chart became really popular? Then bands and labels would be even more motivated to make their music available for free at last.fm. Furthermore you don't have to be a registered member or login to be able to download the songs, which mean that bloggers can link directly to the songs (which is really, really great). The sound quality of the songs is fairly decent (128 Kbps) and the tags are working properly (thus showing up correctly at The Hype Machine). So if you happen to be a blogger I (with these obvious reasons in mind) strongly urge you to "hype" this chart! Currently there aren't that many interesting songs available, but the number of songs seems to be growing every day. And I guess it's no surprise that artists signed by fab Swedish label Labrador are well Read more:Free Downloads
Mono 2007-05-21 10:10:00 It's no hidden secret that I (over the past few years) have grown some (or rather a lot of) interest in unsigned Danish indie/alternative pop/rock bands. Therefore it's always with great expectations that I read Gaffa's monthly feature "Demo of the month", because more than once it's has introduced me to some excellent upcoming bands (e.g. Ruined By Martin, Demons Are Real, Us With Millions). This month (May) my expectations was once again fulfilled as the brilliant Copenhagen indie rock band Mono was picked "Demo of the month". Summarizing the review, the music was described as "grandiose indie rock...loaded with guitars and synths...great energy...fine songwriting...high quality...". I fully agree with every word in the review, as this is exactly the kind of intense, noisy (and still very melodic) indie rock that I just never seem to get tired of.+ Our Dawn+ Back Home+ All Shades Of You

Sprites... 2007-02-03 22:25:00 Another highly interesting band I came across the other day was US indie poppers Sprites. The band was formed in 2002 by Jason Korzen and his wife Amy, following the split up of his former band Barcelona (never heard of them, but probably should have). With an ever changing line-up (the Korzen's aside), the band has since released two albums and an E.P. According to the band's web page, Sprites love MP3's and (even better) to share them, so 5 great ones can be found there for free. The band has toured with The Lucksmiths, which probably is one of the first bands you think of, when you listen to Sprites...+ George Romero+ Bionic Hands+ I Go Crazy

Stupid Monday.... 2007-01-22 08:51:00 It's Monday
- It's snowing - I'm busy - I'm Tired - The coffee is cold - I cannot upload any files - I'm not broke, but I still cannot stop whining........You get my point - don't you?I wanted to upload a new track by cool Danish trio Oliver North Boy Choir, sent to me by the band, but I cannot make FileDen work. The track is also available at Myspace, but in the usual bad quality, so I asked the band to send me the track in a better quality and I received it within minutes. But the poorer version will have to do for now, until I figure out how to upload files again. The track is (apparently) "just" going to be a b-side, but like everything else I've heard from this band it's very good. Perhaps this track shows the band trying to distance itself a bit more from the sound of EPO-555, though the band manage to do it without loosing the charm and the catchy melody.+ CobraAnd if you didn't download them the first time around, here are two older ones:+ Something New+ AlbertinoChris Read more:Stupid
Knoxville.... 2007-01-11 08:31:00 J.A. has been "missing in action" the past month, but last night he sent a mail recommending unsigned Danish band Knoxville
. As always it's a bit strange having a Danish band recommended to me by a foreigner, but I guess it just proves how small the world really is these days? But I'm always interested in hearing new Danish bands, so the first thing I did this morning was to download the 3 (what turned out to be) great songs that can be found at the band's webpage. The best way to describe the band and the music is probably by using the band's own words: "Somewhere between the frolicsome tunes of Franz Ferdinand, the cocky coolness of Interpol and the raw rock songs from the Foo Fighters you'll find the band Knoxville." Further information is very limited, so I have no idea whether this is a new or old band. But since the band is capable of writing songs like these, I feel pretty certain that we'll hear a lot more from these guys in the future!+ Fireworks+ Friday Night+ Restless
A Little Place in the Wilderness 2007-01-03 08:47:00 The album A Little Place
in the Wilderness
by Canadian indie pop band Memphis was a late arrival in my collection last year, but it still made a good enough impression to end up as no. 11 on my list of favorite albums of 2006. The album is the second output from this duo consisting of Chris Dumont and Torquil Campbell; the later probably more known as the front man/lead singer in the more well-known and much loved Stars. Rob Mitchum over at Pitchfork wasn't all that crazy about the album at the time of the release (August 15), but unlike him, I really enjoy spending the 40 minutes in company with this album, listening to the duo's blend of dreamy indie/twee/chamber-pop. Despite owning two of their albums, I've never really been a fan of Stars, which probably is why I have no problems listening to A Little Place in the Wilderness, without constantly comparing it to Torquil's "other band". I've received permission to upload these two tracks, which I believe are very representative o
This and that (International edition)... 2007-05-23 02:47:00 In my search last week for OMD covers, I stumbled upon US duo Vitesse. The duo definitely has found some inspiration in the music of OMD (and many other as well), so recording a cover of 2nd Thought (from the OMD album Organisation) probably was a quite logic thing to do. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a version of this track, though I'd obviously love to hear it. In general this seems to be a band thriving in anonymity, as information is very sparse. So all I really know is that this was a duo that recorded 4 albums in the years 1999-2002, and that I've liked everything that I've heard by the band so far.+ Small Gift+ A Statue on Easter IslandSome time ago I wanted to post the new track Still No Signs by Charlie Don't Surf, but no matter what I did, I just couldn't make the file work/play. This and that (Swedish edition)... 2007-05-22 01:49:00 Download the opening/title track Welcome To Our Town from the new EP by Sweden's Cheshire Cat. This is energetic and very catchy indierock inspired by bands like Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, The Cure etc. So you could say that this is not highly original, but nonetheless it's still really, really great! To be honest I'm not quite sure whether this is new or not. The info received from the label - Stiftelsen - wasn't very specific to say the least. But according to the webpage the EP was released May 10, so I guess this makes it a NEW release? Perhaps re-release is the correct term? The Celestial album I mention further down is new, but features several older, but re-recorded tracks (including the title track). Does that make Dream On a new, old or re-recorded track? Any suggestions?+ Welcome To Our TownSwedish

. I strongly suggest that you read the aforementioned post, but if you haven't done so already, I can inform you that the trio consists of Mikkel Max Hansen (EPO-555), Camilla Florentz (Ex EPO-555) and Ivan Petersen (? but he's "playing the instruments"). For obvious reasons the band follows nicely in the footsteps of EPO-555 (both musically and vocally, without being a rip-off), and the music (described as "indiepop and melancholy) should appeal to all fans of Dexter Fox (the EPO-555 debut). I've had the privilege of listening to three more tracks by the band (they won't be posted here), and they are even better than the ones below! J.A. Recommends!!!!! 2006-11-09 05:39:00 As promised earlier today; here are the best of the songs recently recommended to me by Spanish music freak J.A. (no, no - it's not him in the picture!). He sure deserves all the credit he can get, 'cause he definitely has a knack for finding interesting (and partly unknown) bands. I'm beginning to start wondering what he's doing for a living, because he (seemingly) has all the time in the world to search for new music!!I mentioned Spanish indie pop band Stay in my previous post and this is perfect stuff if you're into a nostalgic trip back in time. "Re-sounding the Rain" 2006-10-19 01:48:00 Copenhagen 5-piece Cinnober has just released a new EP called Re-Sound and all 3 tracks of it are available as free downloads from the band's webpage (now wake up people - this is exactly the right way to promote your music, if you want it to be heard!). Those of you who are already familiar with the band won't be disappointed, because the songs are just as jazz inspired, pleasant-sounding
and beautiful as always, although the brilliant title track flirt heavily with a more rocking sound. The rest of you, who have never heard of Cinnober, should hurry up and get to know this really fine Danish band! has finished recording the debut album and 3 songs from the album can be downloaded from the band's Myspace profile (meaning that they are in the typical poor Myspace quality). The songs are not as shoegaze inspired as I expected them to be, but instead the band sounds like it has found a source of inspiration in fellow Danish rock band Kashmir! I cannot find the release date for the album anywhere, but since the songs are really great, I'm definitely looking forward to hearing the rest of it - whenever it will released!+ Eyes Of Glass+ Sea PortsSpencer
Tricker is a songwriter from N.Y., who (in his own words) writes and records music "in a desperate bid to avoid getting a real job". I have to admit that I like his honesty. No bullshit about saving the world, and who cannot relate to his ambition about avoiding getting a job? On the first of the two tracks below, Altar Boy Blue, he sounds very lo-fi almost in an Iron & Wine kind of way, b
