Velour - The sound of sunshine... 2007-04-17 08:31:00 Danish 60's inspired indie pop band Velour has been so kind to send me their yet to be released second album Undress Your Alibis. Actually it was released in Germany last week on Noisedeluxe, but so far no date for a Danish release has been set. But perhaps/hopefully the band's Danish label (Sonet) will hurry up, once they read this very positive German review of the album? My German isn't any good (actually it sucks pretty bad), but a statement like "...ist Pop im besten" shouldn't be all that difficult for anyone to understand. And this is indeed a wonderful pop album that really urges you to grab a cold one, put on your wayfarers (or whatever they are called these days) and dance into the sunshine
. And the sun will shine, because these songs are so charming and irresistible that even the sun wouldn't want to miss the party!+ If You Really Want Me (my favorite track on the album)+ Pam And The Important Man (described as a "pop jewel" in the review)
The Cupids - Revisited... 2007-01-14 21:43:00 Yesterday I was contacted by a visitor to the blog, who had stumbled upon this older post on Danish band The Cupids. He asked about news, official releases etc., and to be able to answer his questions I contacted one of the band members. He replied, informing me that the band is very much alive, and has recently been spending a lot of time rehearsing. The best news, however, is that the band will soon start recording and chances should be fine that more information will flow this way very soon. Back then I thought the band reminded me of The Smiths and it certainly still does!+ Tonight+ Hand In Hand+ My Blurry Day Read more:Revisited
Saturday Smorgasbord... 2007-01-13 21:19:00 Volvoe are quite productive these days. Today the band has uploaded another new track (called Places) and (once again) it's a really great one!+ Places (Myspace "quality)Via the Myspace profile of Volvoe I came across another interesting Danish band called The Latitudes. The band is less than a year old, but apparently several band members used to be in another band called The Mayfairs. The band lists The The among the influences and it's probably not completely incorrect comparing the music of The Latitudes to this UK band!?+ Any Given Night+ Curtains DrawnJ.A. recommends the track Talk To Me by Norwegian electro pop 5-piece Melophonia. If you enjoy the electronic and danceable tunes of bands like Goldfrapp, Tiger Baby etc. (and I have to admit that I do) this is definitely something for you.+ Talk To MeI know that UK band Pete and The Pirates should be classified as old news, but the nice and charming (quoting Indie MP3, who mentioned the band a year ago) songs of this indie folk r Read more:Saturday
Petit Fours..... 2007-01-12 10:00:00 Peter enjoys 3 bands mentioned in this blog.Chris has (finally) bought the album No One Wins by Windermere. Unfortunately too late to be mentioned in his 2006 year end post.Peter Schallgrenzen recommends German alternative rock band Exit Inside. Not bad.+ BlueprintI've added Swedish blog We Say Disco to the blogroll.Falk sent me a link to this great page, with lots of free (and legal) downloads.I'm currently working on a post on the Entakt debut. Won't finish it today though.I'm also trying to get into Through The Windowpane by Guillemots. It's a whole lot tougher than I thought it would be! Read more:Petit
Tonight I'm listening to... 2007-01-09 21:46:00 Swedish 6-piece Fontainebleau. This 80's inspired band sounds like a mix of Joy Division and The Cure, with a front man singing in Swedish. So you could easily be critical and say that you've heard it all before, but this is dark, depressive, emotional, infectious and really, really cool, so I honestly don't care! Like almost every other interesting Swedish band these days, Fontainebleau hails from Gothenburg...+ Lustmord+ Svenska fåglar Read more:Tonight
Tonight I'm listening to.... 2007-01-05 23:22:00 the Italian indie pop/folk band Warm Morning. The band released an album called Feather last year, and judging from the songs you can stream over at Myspace this band could be a real gem. Retrophobic offers the title track of the album as free download, and that one is definitely a "must". Cannot figure out how to order the album, but I guess this means that I'll have to drop the band a line. According to plans the band will release an EP on the rejuvenated Shelflife Records later this year...+ Feather Read more:Tonight
Tonight I'm listening to... 2007-01-02 22:04:00 the absolutely gorgeous Ballad Of A Bitter End by Scottish indie pop band The Poems. The track is from the 2006 album Young America (released by Minty Fresh Records) and I found the song by checking the Last.fm profile of Starsgoneout, who's a writer over at the South American blog Mira el Péndulo.+ Ballad Of A Bitter Endand the new 5 track EP by French 60's inspired/electro pop piece Prototypes that Minty Fresh Records are giving away for free.+ Je Ne Te Connais Pas+ Exister+ The Full EP (Zip file) Read more:Tonight
This and That 2006-12-22 09:37:00 Stream the new (and pretty good) single Oceanic by Danish alternative rock band Mavis over at Myspace. Unfortunately it's not available for download!!The dudes over at emodreng og indiepige have started listening to Kind of girl. I told you that they have a fine taste in music!Check out excellent blog lifeiscarbon. Here you'll find lots of interesting stuff on (as they call it) Scandinavian Æsthetics. That be art, design, music etc.Brilliant UK quartet Indigo will release a 5 track EP in January next year called The Rain Sessions. 4 of the tracks have already been uploaded to Myspace and are generously available as free downloads. The music sounds like a nice mix of The Smiths and The Stone Roses (perhaps a bit more rocking), and especially the live version of Something New is ace!+ I Can't Fight This Feeling+ Something New (Live)A track by She Wants Revenge called Black Liner Run is available for free at Myspace.+ Black Liner RunBoth Music Of The Moment and Powerpopulist got inspi
AirSpiel +++ 2006-12-20 11:27:00 Scottish indie rock band AirSpiel sent me a mail last week asking if I'd be interested in making a blog post on the band. I quickly recalled that Chris featured the band in his blog a while back, but more importantly I also recalled that I liked the band's songs, when I listened to them. So obviously my reply to the band was positive and in return the boys gave me permission to upload a few tracks.AirSpiel has existed since 2003 and originally started out as a duo, but is now a 5-piece following some changes and additions the past few years. The band is currently recording (or has recently finished?) their debut album (to be called In Another Life), but I cannot find any information on a release date. The music is really catchy indie rock that for obvious reasons has been compared to bands like U2, Coldplay and The Bluetones. I've posted two tracks by the band below and both of them are just fabulous. So I'm eagerly awaiting news on when the album will be released and I will keep y
On a Whim... 2006-11-22 21:53:00 NYC indie/alternative/rock/powerpop/etc. trio The Attorneys has been so kind to send me one more track from the band's forthcoming album, which currently is being (or perhaps already has been) mastered. The album (to be called Stereocracy) will be released next month or early next year, and if the rest is as instantly charming and catchy as On a Whim and Open Up (I originally posted that one three weeks ago), it definitely will be something to look forward to!+ On a Whim+ Open Up
The Electric Pop Group... 2006-11-22 08:58:00 A little more than a month ago J.A. introduced me to the incredible Swedish indie pop band DAYS and yesterday he did it again, when he recommended another equally fantastic Swedish indie pop band. This time it is the very interesting and talented Gothenburg trio The Electric
Pop Group
that sounds like the perfect mix of The Field Mice and The Jesus and Mary Chain. The band was formed in 2005 by brothers Martin and Erik Aamot, both writing songs, singing and playing guitar, and Linnéa Nilsson, playing keyboards. The band has just finished recording their debut album and plans are that it will be (self-?) released on December 14 (distributed by Fraction Discs). More info will follow as soon as there is something new to tell.+ Popgirly+ Walk Away+ She's Playing With Your Heart
Go Jukebox! 2 out of 4........... 2006-11-21 14:01:00 The stated purpose of Swedish net label Go Jukebox
! is: "we're gonna amuse you and, at the same time, push the big record labels a little bit closer to the abyss by giving away our music for free". Show me a music fan who doesn't support this idea, and through our posts today, Peter and I will do our best to put a little more focus on the world of free and independent music. So far 4 bands have joined (cannot really use the term "signed" in this case - can you?) the label and the number of downloads surpassed 12,000 a while back. The two bands featured below (Peter will feature the other two, thus making it 4 out of 4) are pretty good indie/alternative rock band You Are My Everything and laid-back alternative/folk band Baby Blonde and the Downs. I can only recommend that you download, listen and share these songs, so that the number of downloads will keep growing and more bands will feel tempted to join the label! You Are My Everything (no webpage!!)+ Can You Feel What It Takes+ I Was
Rodolfo Recommends! 2006-11-20 10:12:00 Rodolfo is back in action after "being on leave" for a period of time, and has mailed the below list of bands, he thinks we should all check out.The Daysleepers. Really great alternative/shoegaze rock band from Buffalo, US. I've mentioned this band before in this blog (March, this year), but The Daysleepers sure deserves another moment in the sun.+ Mesmerize+ Big Sleep (Soviet Remix)Plug-in city. Australian indie/electro/alternative/pop/rock band. Rodolfo is very high on this aussie band and the music sure grows for every listen.+ Broke on a Wheel+ Pretty FictionVendettas. The current love for Australia continues, with this aussie indie/electro band and its lead singer, who brings back memories of Kim Wilde. Strangers is the one track you really should download today!+ Strangers+ RunningThe Strollers. Indie rock band from The UK sounding like the usual mix of Interpol, Bloc Party, The Libertines and so on.......Not groundbreaking, but pretty OK.+ Red Skies (zip file)+ Into The Dark (z
BREUM... 2006-11-14 21:27:00 Danish duo BREUM sent me a Myspace "friend" request the other day, but I didn't check them out until tonight. Normally I shy away from bands singing in Danish, but luckily I did an exception tonight and gave the new project of the Breum brothers a listen (both are ex-members of Coolsville). This is catchy (and in their own words "dark and romantic") 80's inspired pop music and fans of the more well-known Danish bands TV-2 and Nephew should welcome these newcomers (or at least - new band), as vocals and music sounds like the perfect blend of those two bands (with the mandatory twist of Depeche Mode/Pet Shop Boys). The track Ikke Bange has been added to the play list on Danish national radio P3, which hopefully will secure the band some well deserved exposure. The debut album is set for release in 2007, but for obvious reasons no exact date has been given, as so far only the two featured tracks have been completed.+ Ikke Bange+ SOS i sommer
Neon Zoo... 2006-11-03 14:37:00 I was checking the recent tracks played by a few "friends" over Last.fm, when I stumbled upon mid-England band Neon Zoo
. As the songs were available as free downloads and New Order and Depeche Mode listed among similar artists, I really needed no further persuasion to give them a listen. According the band's Myspace profile the music sounds like "Depeche Mode meets Nine Inch Nails" and with their gothic/industrial/electronic sound, this is probably not the most original/innovative stuff you'll ever hear. But it's dark, groovy and quite catchy, which really it's all I'm asking for on this lazy Friday afternoon. And since the band offers plenty of songs and mixes for us to download (for free), Neon Zoo definitely deserves all the support and kind words it can get!+ Darkest Dance+ Heaven Sin+ Insanity+ Slave
BUSY, busy, bus, bu, b 2006-11-03 09:12:00 Hopefully I'll be "back" this afternoon. Meanwhile enjoy these recent Last.fm recommendations. Music Is My Girlfriend! 2006-10-06 09:10:00 I'm been aware of the existence of Swedish label Music
Is My Girlfriend
for quite some time (primarily because Celestial is signed to the label), but I've never really listened to any of the many downloads they offer for free. But the other day J.A. advised me to give a few of the bands/songs a listen and I'm glad I did, because this is probably as close to indie pop heaven you'll ever get. And when the guys behind the label state that they have no intention of making any money (nor do they want loosing any), they definitely have secured themselves a big spot in my music heart. The concept of the label is not to focus on just one subgenre of pop music, but they do seem to have (more than) a weak spot when it comes to indie/twee pop. And once you start downloading it just seems ever so natural that one great song follows the other. So be prepared to spend quite some time there downloading! Below 3 very good (but not necessarily the best) tracks that I've downloaded so far!+ Peace I
This and That... 2007-05-03 08:39:00 Well, what do you know! The William Blakes has uploaded a new track to the band's Myspace profile. That's the 7th new song in less than 2 months! The vocal becomes a little wild/crazy towards end, but I still cannot help loving this band. The five members call themselves Einz, Zwei, Drei, Boris and Fünf, which yet again leaves me wondering who are hiding behind those names!+ Violent GodTorr has the new single Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors by Editors.Download the album track Life Is Beautiful by UK alternative/indie rock/pop band Vega4 from the band's Myspace profile. Highly underrated band!Liga has two new tracks by Nordstrøm and Lily Electric.Chris is really high on the track Take me to the Ballroom by Moonbabies posted over at It's A Trap. And it is indeed a terrific song!Learned about Swedish indie pop trio Tea for three!!! over at Indie MP3. Sounds interesting and really promising!+ Nincompoops
Son My... 2007-01-31 15:08:00 Just came across interesting Danish alternative/post-rock band Son My over at Last.fm. The band's dreamy sound should definitely appeal to fans of Sigur Ros, Mogwai etc. Wonder why I've never heard of these guys before!!+ It Will Soon Be Over+ Intermission+ By Night
Katrienne... 2007-01-31 08:51:00 Fadeaway recommends Italian psychedelic/ shoegaze/alternative rock band Katrienne. 3 tracks from the band's self-titled 2005 album are available for free from the band's webpage. I have to admit that the Italian music scene is rather unfamiliar territory to me, but perhaps it's time to start exploring it? Especially if there's more like this to be found! Somehow I'm certain that Fadeaway has a few more recommendations up his sleeve!+ Our Ever Changing Earth+ The Other+ Tomorrow Daylight
Songs... 2007-01-29 15:27:00 I'm really, really busy at work these days, so I have very little time to update the blog. But here are few quick ones!!!Swedish band Dew has been so kind to send me a couple of their tracks in a better quality than the ones I posted the other day. Now there are no longer any excuses for not checking them out!+ Still Looking+ All That I'm Leaving BehindRodolfo has asked for (and been given) permission, to post the catchy and danceable (new) single by Scarlet BLONDE.+ ElectricFalk recommends the really cool track Impurity by UK Gothic rock act The Faces of Sarah.+ ImpuritySorry about this rather incomplete post, but it's the best I can do right now......
Tower of Attorneys... 2006-10-28 20:21:00 I've probably mentioned this several times before, but I cannot help thinking that it is extremely cool when you're contacted by bands/artists. Obviously I'm not thinking of those "please-listen-to-our-music" mails that are sent out in bunches or the superficial friends requests at Myspace, but instead it's the type of mails I received yesterday I'm having in mind. Two bands previously featured in the blog; Tower
Of Foil and The Attorneys
sent me some info on their recent recordings and in both cases a few mails were sent back and forth with additional info and finally a permission to "exclusively" upload one or two of the new song(s).Tower Of Foil is (currently) a quartet from Sweden playing a laid-back and really beautiful kind of indie pop, which does find some inspiration in the music of Prefab Sprout (in his own words front man Daniel really likes this classic UK band!). This is the type of music, which should be enjoyed laying on the couch with the eyes closed and a glass of
Made of Buildings... 2007-05-05 22:31:00 Last month Danish quartet Made of Buildings
released their debut album called The World Has Been Stolen by Cynics. I haven't bought it (yet), but after listening to the two tracks below (free downloads over at Last.fm) I definitely think I should. Musically I think I'll go for a description like The Notwist going post-rock...no matter how weird that may sound!+ As We Make a Break For Dawn + The Quarentine
Last.fm - Stuff 2007-02-02 08:59:00 I'm still damn busy, but today I'll let the recommendations over at Last.fm guide me to some (hopefully) interesting music. I like the whole idea of recommending music to groups and people, though I do find it rather pointless recommending anything that you cannot download or at least stream. There's so much music out there, so don't expect anyone putting that much of an effort into searching for something that might be interesting. After all, the next band offering free music is just one "click" away! Below some of the songs I've found today thanks to the many recommendations and despite being quite a mixed bag, I enjoyed all of them....+ Club 8 - Everlasting Love (typical and irresistible Swedish indie pop)+ Acid House Kings - Do What You Wanna Do (Swedish 60's inspired indie pop)+ Edson - Sunday, Lovely Sunday (happy Swedish indie pop)+ Mount Eerie - I Hold Nothing (electronic lo-fi - does that make any sense?)+ Thelittlesorryselfyouare - Designedly dissolved into nothingless
The Last.fm free downloads chart... 2007-01-09 11:48:00 has been updated, so this morning I've been busy listening to several artists/tracks tagged as "indie pop". Below some of the better or perhaps more interesting ones that (until this morning) were completely unknown to me:+ The Eames Era - Could Be Anything & Listen for the SunIt's probably a huge mistake that I haven't checked out this band before. Especially since Powerpopulist had a nice post on the band a month and a half ago! 2 wonderful and catchy songs that definitely make you forget these are cold and rainy days.+ Strip Squad - Down And Out And Away & Unreliable Narrator Don't know how serious this is meant to be, but this Swedish band reminds me of The Hidden Cameras.+ The Mendoza Line - Catch a Collapsing Star & Mysterious in BlackNo! It's not Bob Dylan singing on Collapsing Star!+ The Zebras - Car of IdiotsProbably the same aussie band as Peter mentioned a while back!!I found a few more bands worth checking out, but work is calling, so I won't add to the list.
This and That... 2006-12-13 08:14:00 5-piece Ciao Transizta was picked as Gaffa's Demo band in December. This Danish alternative rock band is influenced by the likes of Interpol, Sonic Youth, The Arcade Fire etc. It took me a few listens getting into the music, but now I'm really enjoying these songs..+ New York Naked+ Take TimeAt least Thomas over at DoCopenhagen agrees that saving up her wishes (for another Christmas) by Celestial is the best new Christmas track of the year.In his comment yesterday Anders suggested (tongue in cheek I hope) that Wonderland by Heidi Klum is the best new Christmas track of 2006. She sure looks beautiful though! The current no. 1 in the Danish indie chart - Det Elektriske Barometer - is this stunning track by Decorate. Decorate.+ Surname of CopenhagenPerhaps this only happens to me, but doesn't Last.fm recommend the same tracks over and over again?I'm currently busy compiling my best of 2006 lists, but I still have plenty of catching up left to do. Yesterday I bought the albums by Hot Ch
Lonely in a modern way....Kind of girl 2006-11-02 13:20:00 zzzzzzzzz It’s spring 2007 and Danish band Kind of girl has just released the debut album Lonely
in a modern way to massive critical acclaim and is now ready to conquer the world. Waking up and realizing that this is November 2006 and it was just a dream. But surely not one of those impossible ones that will be told to the grandkids many years from now that they could/should have made it big. You must dare dreaming those big dreams and some bands do indeed make it. I'm probably biased as I've been in love with the charming and incredibly catchy pop/rock music of Kind of girl for months now, but ever since I first laid ears to these new versions, I've been feeling absolutely certain that there will be much more to this than just dreams. OK - shut up and get to the point. So here they are as promised, the two new sweet mixes (superbly done by Henrik Lund) from the wonderful musical universe of Kind of girl. And now - you guys go conquer the world!!+ Poetry Boy+ Slave To Your Charms
CJ Palmer +++ 2007-05-09 08:41:00 Found the debut album Everything That Shines by Swedish quartet CJ Palmer
in the mailbox yesterday. The album was released last week on the band's own label - Silver Road Records - so the boys are currently doing all the work themselves. Think a powerpop version of Savage Garden or maybe Roxette, and you should have some idea of where the band is located musically. Some might claim that there isn't anything new under the sun, and they might have a point here. But the songs are melodic, radio friendly and very, very catchy, and it will be a very (negative) surprise if this album doesn't find a large audience, as the music (in my opinion) should please the ears of lots and lots of people!+ 34Peter is really high on German indie pop band Tornister and calls them "the new indie pop hope from Oldenburg". And if you check the band's influences you can see that they are inspired by the best of the best, so no wonder that Tornister sounds absolutely brilliant!+ Big Fake+ Pale Blue PaperFAL
BREUM... 2007-01-09 08:18:00 I mentioned promising Danish duo BREUM a while ago, and this week the duo is picked as band of the week over at Mymusic.dk. The two tracks I mentioned back then are now available for free at Mymusic, but in a much better quality than at Myspace. But since you have to be a registered member to be able to download the tracks, I've taken the liberty to upload the songs, thus making them easier to download (if anyone object to this, please let me know). The songs are in Danish, but don't let that prevent you from giving them a listen!!+ Ikke bange+ SOS i sommer
The Village Idiot - Demo of the Month!... 2007-01-05 14:48:00 Gaffa's demo CD of the month (January) is by acoustic/folk/country influenced one-man project The Village
Idiot. Especially two things caught my attention when I read the review (read it here in Danish). For the first time ever a demo received 6 out of 6 stars, which for obvious reasons made me curious and wanting to check it out. But equally remarkable (in my opinion) is that Kenni (the man behind it all) and I share the same hometown. And since I'm having a hard time recalling any other interesting artists or bands from "around here", it was quite a (pleasant) surprise to learn that this month's top pick was a "local hero". The songs I've listened to so far do indeed find some inspiration in legendary artists like Nick Drake, Lou Reed and Johnny Cash, though he's definitely not a "copy-cat" (have to quote Gaffa on this). But far more important is that the songs sound really, really great, so it's quite easy to hear why Gaffa was impressed! Wouldn't it be sweat if he was playin Read more:Month
