Nuclear Power NOW
2006-10-16 23:24:30
I do not understand why leftists are so eager to have their cake and eat it too. A report has come out that there is direct evidence that greenhouse warming has caused the collapse of an ice shelf in Antarctica.  Let us assume for a second that this evidence is flawless and that the greenhouse effect, which is presumably caused by humans, is actually causing the polar ice caps to melt.  Now let’s try to come up with a solution to this problem, such as reducing green house gasses.  Greenhouse gas is primarily caused by two things:  water vapor and burning fossil fuels.  Humans are only capable of producing fossil fuel emissions enough to presumably cause a global warming problem, so the water vapor issue is basically out of the question.  Now what causes the most fossil fuel emissions?  Power plants (both industrial and public).  What technology do we have that could counter this?  Nuclear .  Why can’t we have it?  Because the leftists have legislatively blocked nu

Protest?
2006-10-10 05:07:54
I don’t care what the man on stage is arguing for or against, this mob shows exactly what leftist mentality breeds. Read the comments on this video (click the video twice) if you wish to see how many idiots think that force is an acceptable way to argue. Scary. Do these people think that they won by trashing the stage? Are they really proud of squelching another’s right to free speech? At least the guy at the end has some sense.

Determinist Faith
2006-10-08 08:21:19
I am, therefore I must think. That quote has never meant as much to me as it does this very moment. I believe you can accept determinism as a philosophy, but I think that if you are wrong about your philosophy, then you are setting yourself up to destroy your mind. Objectivists believe that volition is the focus of the mind on subjects to form concepts. It has been explained to me that everything in reality has identity. A=A, mind=mind. Without identity, reality has no logical merit, no Objective reality beyond our own minds. Without the axiom of identity, our discussions are pointless. Scientists make the mistake of believing that the cause and effect relationship that exists in macroscopic science can be applied down to the quantum level. They assume that A=A, therefore a=A. Not enough is known about the quantum level to make such a bold statement as determinism does. It would take a lot of faith to be a determinist. To claim that everything in our universe is abides by mec

Objectivism vs. Determinism
2006-10-06 18:48:02
James McG, you are the featured member, once again. This is a debate that started on the post about Che. James McGuiggan Says: September 27th, 2006 at 11:39 am No; humans can hold contradictions. He can be a socialist and, as he is (I think), a meritocrat. He holds the ideal of justice very close to his heart. In fact; don't believe me? I might show a contradiction you have. Do you hold justice as an ideal? It's an Objectivist virtue, no? Objectivism is just insofar as free will exists, but we do not possess complete free will (scientific evidence points against it; but note the quantifier "complete'), so Objectivism is not completely just. I'm inclined to think we have very little free will indeed, so Objectivism is not particularly just.I am not saying that justice is good, and so Objectivism is flawed; but I am saying that utter justice and Objectivism are not compatible. Reality cannot be just and Objectivist, but you can hold both ideals simultaneously. By your logic,

Ayn Rand on Racism
2006-09-29 05:38:50
I don’t know why I have never shared this article on my blog, but here it is. One of my favorite Ayn Rand essays: Racism is the lowest, most crudely primitive form of collectivism. It is the notion of ascribing moral, social or political significance to a man’s genetic lineage — the notion that a man’s intellectual and characterological traits are produced and transmitted by his internal body chemistry. Which means, in practice, that a man is to be judged, not by his own character and actions, but by the characters and actions of a collective of ancestors. …read the rest here.

George Bush Held Up Traffic
2006-09-29 05:30:56
I guess GWB was in town today. I was held up in traffic because his motorcade decided to roll through the intersection I wanted to go through. Has anyone caught any of the political advertisements on TV? They are all so dirty. Why do politicians seem to get more evil every election year? Maybe I am just noticing it more since I actually have strong, well thought out convictions now. I saw some republican slimeball candidate today who was talking trash about his opponent. His main “arguement” against his opponent was that he was one of the “slim minority” of voters in the senate who voted no on the Patriot Act. Then I saw some pro-liberal slime commercial that simply stated that another candidate was supported by GWB, and that’s why not to vote for him. Why not vote for candidates based on your values? Do people really vote for someone because they are better at mudslinging than the other? I guess they do, or they wouldn’t spend money runnin

Setting a precedent
2006-09-27 05:29:56
Remember when New York banned smoking is restaurants?  Anybody who says laws do not set precedent s for other laws are ignorant.  Guess what they want to ban now? THE PROPOSAL: New York City health officials want to stop restaurants from using artificial trans fatty acids, commonly listed on food labels as partially hydrogenated oil.  …read the rest here. This is a SMALL example of why we need less laws, less regulations, rather than more.  Governments who want to control how you live your life will not stop at the small things.

INDIVIDUALISMMMMMMMMMM!
2006-10-24 04:50:07
If you haven’t heard the newest bizare twist on Atlas Shrugged the movie, you’ll love this one.  Randall Wallace (writer of Braveheart) is set to be the writer for Atlas Shrugged.  Not only that, but the Baldwins are thinking about trimming the movie down into one movie instead of a trilogy.  I can’t wait to see what John Galt’s speech comes out looking like in script format.

Objectivist-Libertarian
2006-10-25 07:00:50
True Objectivists reject the Libertarian political party, and for some fairly good reasons. Mainly the reason that Libertarianism is a stripped down version of Objectivism. It is basically all of the political ideology of Objectivism (capitalism, limited government, individual rights) minus the ethics (rational self-interest), metaphysics and epistemology. I am an Objectivist who supports many Libertarian candidates, because they are basically Objectivists flying the Libertarian flag to gain support for their campaign. I am weary of calling myself a Libertarian, because I am really an Objectivist when it comes down to every aspect of my life. Libertarianism has ALMOST become synonymous with Objectivism, due to the large number Objectivists in this country who support Libertarian candidates, but is not fully compatible due to many members of the party being socialist-libertarians, anarchists (anarcho-whatevers) and other factions that have their own set of ethics attached. I think the L

I generally loathe social networking sites, but I make an exception for Facebook . The reason I like Facebook is a) nice clean layout without music or other crap b) you have to be over 18 to join. If you are over 18, I suggest you get an account. …and when you are done getting an account, add me as your friend.

Teh Internet
2006-10-26 23:18:54
James and I had a great idea about a month ago but we never got around to putting it together. The idea is to make a spoof of a popular pro Net Neutrality video on YouTube. Basically it will be this site in video format. I think it would work better if I had more people participate. Colleen and I are going to make brief videos about Net Neutrality. James and D will also make videos. When they are done with them they will submit them to me and I will edit it together. Please view the original video below: If you are interested in participating, grab your webcam and put together a 30-60 second clip of you saying things like: Teh Internet is controlled by giant corporations who only have their own selfish interests in mind. What else can we do, other than petition our government to force them to give equal bandwidth to all!? This country was founded on force. Our founding fathers would have never been able to push out England without force, so now it is time to fight a new battle

Hey Michael J!

Stem Cell research is great.  However, using the government to force (at the point of a gun, mind you) its citizens to fund that research is WRONG.  Especially since some of those individuals do not agree with you.  No matter what their reasons, it is still their right to disagree.  You are taking away that right.  I am sorry about your ailment, but resorting to force on others to save yourself is wrong.

Anarcho Capitalism
2006-11-02 00:14:18
Government is essential to protect our individual rights. The United States was founded on this idea, but our amendable constitution has made it possible for the socialists and the religious to pervert the meaning of freedom. Just take a look at liberals who scream about freedom of speech but are so willing to stomp on property rights. Look at conservatives who scream about property rights but are so willing to stomp on freedom of speech. Our founding fathers had the right idea, but they did not define our individual rights clearly enough to protect them in the long run. Now we fight the battle every year with new initiatives, taxes, politicians and laws. Constitutional amendments are the bain of democracy, but that does not mean we should go without government. The result of giving up the government altogether means giving up the protection of individual rights. Gang warfare is the result of any pro anarchy philosophy, because all it takes is someone with a bad philosophy and

Microsoft considers China policy
2006-11-02 15:24:58
Fred Tipson, senior policy counsel for the computer giant, said concerns over the repressive regime might force it to reconsider its business in China . “Things are getting bad… and perhaps we have to look again at our presence there,” he told a conference in Athens. “We have to decide if the persecuting of bloggers reaches a point that it’s unacceptable to do business there.” “We try to define those levels and the trends are not good there at the moment. It’s a moving target.” Read the rest here.

Rafael Ramirez - Minister of Oil and Energy
2006-11-03 05:55:52
I could not believe how open the Minister of Oil and Energy (and president of PDVSA in Venezuela) was about using physical force against managers and employees who were slightly dissenting of Chavez’s rein.  The speech is translated from Spanish, so grammar may not be perfect and some sentences may not make full sense, but the gist of this is that if you are against Chavez, you will loose your job and we may just beat you up: That no manager, no public servant of the ministry, no employee, not a single military, no one in the paramilitary reserve, no one at all that is here in the new PDVSA should have an ounce of a doubt that the new PDVSA is with President Chavez. Here we are going to support President Chavez, who is the maximum leader of the revolution … and whomever does not feel right about should must surrender his job to a bolivian I am insulted … that we find people Ni-Ni in here, chavistas light, that there are people that say that we need to open up this thing. No

Rev. Ted Haggard
2006-11-04 00:17:06
The Rev. Ted Haggard resigned as head of the 30 million-member association Thursday and also gave up leadership of his New Life Church pending the investigation into allegations he had monthly trysts with a gay prostitute over the past three years. Haggard, a married father of five, denied the allegations, but the acting pastor of his church later said that Haggard had acknowledged some of the accusations were true. “I just know that there has been some admission of indiscretion, not admission to all of the material that has been discussed, but there is an admission of some guilt,” Ross Parsley told CBS4 late Thursday. Parlsey did not elaborate, but in an e-mail addressed to congregants, he wrote that the church’s four-member board of overseers had since met with Haggard. “It is important for you to know that he confessed to the overseers that some of the accusations against him are true. He has willingly and humbly submitted to the authority of the board of ove

Derick Halley’s Tour De Force
2006-11-05 07:38:31
Republished without permission. Copyright Derick Halley 2006. Original post can be found here. Tour De Force In Defense Of Volition/Free Will Free will exists. This, the faculty of volition, is part of human consciousness, is real, possesses a specific nature, and is consistent with the law of identity. This piece is being written so that all those concerned have the rational case for volition consistently presented to them, as opposed to the prevalence of concrete-bound argumentation. It is to cover loose ends and to stand at the center of my continued defense of the existence of volition, and I am prepared to continue to defend it against those who have read this. I hardly need to mention my intellectual debt to Ayn Rand and Leonard Peikoff; consider this as including one huge citation to all of their work, with the footnote “As interpreted and applied by myself.” Hardly any of what I'm writing is strictly new ideologically, and I act as an unofficial scholar of Objec

Sa’long Saddam
2006-11-05 18:16:04
Saddam Hussein was convicted and sentenced Sunday to hang for crimes against humanity in the 1982 killings of 148 people in a single Shiite town, as the ousted leader, trembling and defiant, shouted “God is great!” This should have been the instant sentence when we caught him three years ago. However, everyone thought we needed to hold a trial for a man who was proven guilty decades before we toppled his reign. What a waste of time and effort to come to the same sentence he deserved in the first Gulf war.

Norway ranked as best country to live in
2006-11-09 23:09:12
Despite wealth, high levels of education, low unemployment, and an economic boom, Norwegians often complain of high taxes and of weaknesses in their cradle-to-grave welfare state, such as waiting lists at hospitals and a shortage of public care for both children and the elderly.   …read more. CPA

I went to a CPA today to find out how much I owe Uncle Sam…  I was informed that I am going to have the pleasure of having 7 1/2% more of my income forced from me, at the point of a gun, just because I run my own business.  Yay socialist America.  You are so great at motivating individuals to do their own thing.  I love you FDR.  Thanks everyone for voting the democrats back into power.  Who the fuck is John Galt?
