"Call Me Al"(1986)Genre:RockIn a career dating back to the 1950s, Paul Simon has established himself among the best and most popular songwriters of the rock era. Growing up in Queens, NY, Simon befriended schoolmate Art Garfunkel, who had an angelic tenor voice, and the two teamed up as Tom & Jerry, taking the names of the cartoon characters. In the winter of 1957-1958, they scored a chart hit with "Hey Schoolgirl"; both were 16 years old. Simon continued to try to score hits in the late '50s and early '60s, reaching the charts briefly in 1962 in the group Tico & the Triumphs with "Motorcycle" and under the name Jerry Landis in 1963 with "The Lone Teen Ranger." He and Garfunkel teamed up again as a folk duo in Greenwich Village, signed to Columbia Records, and released Wednesday Morning, 3 AM (October 1964). The album flopped initially, but Simon, who had been spending a lot of time in England, was picked up as a solo artist by CBS and recorded The Paul Simon Son
Number 751 - The Cult 2006-10-28 10:14:00 Number 751The Cult"She Sells Sanctuary"(1985).Genre:Alt RockThe Cult to me were the true pioneers of the Alternative Rock genre. The Cult were also hugely popular in this country (New Zealand) with the youngsters at the time (hey that's me) and to be honest i don't even know if they toured here (anyone?). "1985's Love by the cult displayed a marked improvement over the Cult's early material, and though it remains under appreciated in America (worldwide it was a smash), this exceptional record has actually aged better than the band's more notorious (and equally important) releases: Electric and Sonic Temple. Equal parts psychedelic hard rock and new wave goth, the songs on Love emanate a bright guitar sheen, tight arrangements, crisp drumming, and a command performance from vocalist Ian Astbury, who as usual says a lot more with less than most singers. Overall, the album benefits from a wonderful sense of space, thanks in large part to guitarist Billy Duffy (who is much more subdue Read more:Number
Number 905 - Midge Ure 2006-08-11 14:45:00 Number
905Midge Ure"If I Was" (1985)Genre:New WavePhew, after the last post i am glad we are at one of my favourite Genres, New Wave. Midge Ure was in Ultravox and Visage, two great early New Wave bands. What you probably didn't know is when he left Visage, is that he went to replace Gary Moore in Thin Lizzy ! (I can see Mr Gary Shackelton having a cardiac right about now...evil grin) But its all true. After Thin Lizzy he joined Ultravox and we cannot forget the song Vienna can we people? After Ultravox, the rest was history............ "In 1985, Ultravox was put on hiatus and Ure began to pursue a full-time solo career. Recorded entirely by Ure, his 1985 solo debut, The Gift, launched the number one single "If I Was," as well as the minor hits "That Certain Smile" and "Call of the Wild." The following year, he recorded the final Ultravox album; in 1987, the band broke up and he began recording his second solo album. The resulting record, 1988's Answers to Nothing, was less successfu
Number 912 - Bay City Rollers 2006-08-10 12:23:00 Number
912Bay City Rollers
"Saturday Night"(1975)...Genre:PopThis is a sad moment in time, it is like a horror movie "When Good Rock Goes Wrong". Listen people, as i tell you of a time when grown women left an imprint of embarrassment to the rock world, you might not feel well after. (Let alone walk again)Once upon a time ago in 1973...............There was this band from Scotland, at first all was normal. They sang nice little pop tunes and subsequently made the charts. After awhile they started to wear "Tartan" jackets, pants & shirts. Obviously proud of where they come from and who could not be proud if your Scottish aye?But that's where the fairytale ends and the horror starts......." At this point, the Rollers became a teen sensation in Great Britain, with their good looks and tartan knickers, and they scored a series of Top Ten U.K. hits over the next two and a half years"Yes people..... "Tartan Knickers" It was a dreadful dreadful state of affairs."They scored their first U.S.
Number 914 - Sly Fox 2006-08-10 12:09:00 Number
914Sly Fox"Lets Go All The Way"(1985)Genre:DanceRight, welcome back to "The Hitchikers Guide To Rock & Roll". Lets hitch a ride back to '85 (Whaddya mean you dont want to go?) It'll be fun ! Honest.Sly Fox only had one hit, but it was quite a single. In 1986, Sly Fox Let's Go All the Way" lit dynamite onto the pop charts, an infectious dance track with a thumping drum sound and funky bass. It may have seemed like a lone gem from a rather anonymous group of now-you-see-them-now-you-don't newcomers, but it was actually the work of Parliament veteran Gary Muddbone' Cooper. Let's Go All the Way", with its oddball mix of hip-hop, Latin pop, disco, and New Wave, crossed radio formats, from R&B to Top-40 to Rock of the 80s" stations ruled by the Smiths and the Cure. Ultra slick, catchy, and making little sense, it could have only come from the 80s. Joined by vocalist Michael Camacho, Cooper was able to take his funk roots into the synthesized 80s, and Let's Go All the Way" hint
Number 915 - Catatonia 2006-08-10 11:54:00 Number
915Catatonia"Road Rage" (1998)...Genre:Alt PopSecond entry from Wales (First one being Tom Jones). The most traditional pop band of all the Welsh bands to emerge in the post-Brit-pop days of the mid-'90s, Catatonia reworked the sound of jangling late-'80s alternative rock with the punchy, amateurish indie-rock attack. Comprised of vocalist Cerys Matthews, guitarist/vocalist Mark Roberts, guitarist Owen, bassist Paul Jones and drummer Aled Richards, Catatonia formed in Cardiff, Wales in the early '90s. Matthews and Roberts used to busk together in Cardiff before officially forming the band. Dont fear here, these guys know how to Alt Rock. "Road Rage" is a snappy and enjoyable box of marshmellows on tinfoil, kick of your ninja shoes and enjoy. (No i don't smoke Pot)Rolling Stone Top 500 Songs ranked this song at Number (Nope, nah ah, not a chance) and the Album ranked at Number (Dont rate anything they cant speak)This song has a total rating of 56.1 out of 108

Number 917 - New Seekers 2006-08-10 11:31:00 Number
917New Seekers"Circles"(1972)...Genre:PopSee Post Number 964"Known chiefly for making a Coca-Cola jingle into a massive worldwide hit, the New Seekers ostensibly grew out of the ashes of the Australian folk-rock outfit the Seekers ("Georgy Girl"). Although their clear harmonies, pop leanings, and squeaky-clean image were similar to the original band, their actual connection was tenuous at best. After the Seekers disbanded, guitarist/vocalist Keith Potger put together an otherwise completely new band in late 1969: female vocalists Eve Graham and Sally Graham (no relation), guitarists/vocalists Laurie Heath and Marty Kristian, and bassist/vocalist Chris Barrington. Potger christened them the New Seekers and produced their self-titled 1970 debut album, and while he did sing with them at first, he soon retired from both performance and production to become their manager, leaving them with no members of the original Seekers. His last appearance was on the ironically titled follow-up

"Laid" (1993)..Genre:Alt PopMy dream (since i was this high) is to drive through America (aye Kcops from CC1) down Route 66, cruising in a convertable with my 1000 Songs of All Time playing through me Ipod, and yes with a packet of smokes and my favourite spirit (Ok so by then i will be 100% smoke free and drink, well, one brandy before bed anyway)But its the dream isnt it?Don't worry i will think of you all when i'm cruising, listening to this song in some far out place called Kachaskawa County. (Don't look it up, i made it up)James made big with this song and this album, its good to see hard work pays off some time innit?Rolling Stone Top 500 Songs ranked this song at Number (Nope, They hated it) and the Album ranked at Number (Nope, didn't know it was out yet)This song has a crowbarred rating of 55.7 out of 108

Gilmour"Murder" (1984)..Genre:Classic RockImagine Pink Floyd doing a "Unplugged MTV Special"? Well this is the closest your gonna get so enjoy it."David Gilmour released his second solo venture in 1984, following the apparent dissolution of Pink Floyd. He had released a record on his own in 1978, but About Face is much more accessible. Gilmour has a stellar band backing him, including Jeff Porcaro (drums), Pino Palladino (bass), and Anne Dudley (synthesizer). The songs on About Face show a pop sensibility that Pink Floyd rarely was concerned with achieving. Although the album didn't attract the attention of a Floyd release, several cuts did manage to get airplay. "Until We Sleep" is rife with shimmering synthesizers and cavernous drums, and "Blue Light" was a minor pop hit, with Gilmour's trademark delay-drenched guitar giving way to a driving, horn-laced rocker. Pete Townshend wrote two of the tracks: "Love on the Air" and the propulsive "All Lovers Are Deranged." O
Number 928 - Sixpence None The Richer 2006-08-08 12:09:00 Number 928Sixpence
None The Richer"Kiss Me"(1997)...Genre:PopBest described with this brief comment... ..After toiling in relative obscurity in the Christian pop ghetto for several years, Sixpence None
the Richer suddenly exploded on to the pop charts in 1999 on the strength of "Kiss Me," an utterly irresistible slice of swoony guitar pop that, once heard, is impossible to shake loose from the brain and could well turn out to be this generation's "I Wanna Hold Your Hand."Nice praise indeed and very well worth it for this song. "Feelin' Alright"(1969)..Genre:Rock Joe Cocker
has to be one of the more "unsung" (excuse the pun) rock stars of all time. Although he was a Woodstock hero he never got the claim to fame he probably deserved. I was fortunate to see his performance here in Auckland, New Zealand (Dirkadirkastan) in late 80's or early 90's, talk about a set of pipes on that man! Of course it didn't help that i was up the front and not far from the main speakers. (What did you say? Huh?).The closest thing we have as a performer here in that vein in New Zealand is Ritchie Pickett who displays a fantastic act in itself if not just the singing! Just ask anyone at the 2006 Devonport Wine & Food festival ~ just watch out for those miniature scotch bottles he throws at Emo's. I told Ritchie when he signed a CD of his "F**K you David Chapman xxx Love Quentin" that i would make him famous one day online. He just nodded, flicked his cigg and said "Whatever"Joe Cocker's debut album hold Read more:Number

"Lazy"(1972)Genre:Hard RockEd Rivadavia sums it up best with his thoughts on "Machine Head" by Deep Purple, he says.... "Led Zeppelin's fourth album, Black Sabbath's Paranoid, and Deep Purple's Machine Head stand as the Holy Trinity of English hard rock. These recordings provide the blueprint followed by virtually every heavy rock & roll band since the mid-'70s. Though probably the least celebrated of the three, Machine Head contains the mother of all guitar riffs in "Smoke on the Water," a song that needs no further explanation. The album also features the classic "Highway Star," which epitomizes all of Deep Purple's intensity and versatility, while featuring perhaps the greatest soloing duel ever between guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and organist Jon Lord. Also in top form is singer Ian Gillan (simply one of the finest singers of his generation, bar none), who explodes with amazing power and range throughout. Gillan lets the band take over on the largely inst
