family holiday somewhere in hungary
when i was little my family always went traveling. most of my school friends went for two weeks to italy, france or greece during the summer holidays. my family rather chose to spend all of our school holidays away in poland, hungary or the baltics, which was a lot cheaper as well.
i was twelve when we went on holiday to the baltic states. my dad spontaneously promised my uncle that he could visit the house he was born in a few years before world war II. the only problem was that the house was now officially on russian territory and we could not get a visa. so my dad bribed a border guard to let my uncle, me and himself on our bicycles across for the day. we spent a couple hours driving around the border town, but in the end my uncle found the right street and shortly after that the house. it made his day. by then we were quite lost though. so after pedalling around for a bit and not really getting anywhere, my dad stopped at a police station an

endurance training 2007-04-04 00:29:35 one of the most important traits one can have as a traveller is endurance. after all we spend a considerable amount of our travelling life waiting. we wait for a bus, that was supposed to have picked us up three hours ago; we wait at airports to catch our flight out; we wait in a queue at some embassy to apply for a visa and then again to pick it up; we wait at restaurants for our food to arrive; we wait for our next trip to start; we wait at border crossings for a border guard to stamp our passport; we wait and pray for daylight to arrive, cause we, once again, chose the cheapest guesthouse, which is full of bugs and mosquitos and lacks a basic mosquito net; we wait at customs while our backpack is being inspected; we wait…the list goes on and on.

8 weeks left 2007-03-23 03:34:19 just passed the 8 week mark. my feet are getting itchier by the minute and i’ll probably have to work right up to the day i fly out. i set myself an amount i would like to take with me to oz and it’s starting to look like it’s gonna be close. i’ve kind of not been going to my second job as much as i should have, but i just can’t be bothered right now. it’s snowing here at the moment and it’s pulling me down a bit. i’ll have to make up for it next month, i guess…

what type of traveller are you? 2007-03-20 23:45:21
i love to watch people. i do it at home, sitting in a cafe for example, and i do it while travelling. i found khao san road in bangkok, thailand, to be one of the best places to indulge in my hobby. you just sit down in a restaurant with a chilled beer and watch the world pass by. there’s israelis with dreadlocks and wearing bandanas, english burnt by too much time in the sun and too little sunscreen, swedes, tanned a dark brown in their boardshorts and cultivating that surfers look, german tourists trying to blend in to the whole traveller scene and in between them all left over hippies on a short visit from the last full moon party in goa.
nowadays, you can actually interchange all those nationalities. the country-clichés are slowly disolving i think, but there are still different types of travellers:

that perfect hammock 2007-04-16 11:37:55
bowline
for some travelers it can be quite a hassle getting that hammock up there, getting it to stay up there and getting it down again. so first you need two pole-like things. the wider apart they are and the higher you can tie the ropes the comfier it will be. the hammock should hang about 60 cm above the ground. finally the best knot for this is the bowline. this knot is easy to learn and even easier to untie, as it will not jam up.

site layout 2007-04-20 03:56:05 decided to go back to a more conventional blog frontpage. been wanting to do this for ages. i moved the small print categories from the sidebar back into the main area, using matt’s asides if anyone’s interested. i think it’s better to keep all the content together and not spread it out so much. it’s simpler that way and that’s quite often better. then, obviously the recent readers and recent comments had to go into the sidebar. i think the way it’s set up now makes it also easier for people to comment. i’m quite happy with the result. what do you think?

Buddhas Washing Day 2007-04-28 20:21:16 Just saw a documentary about Cambodia on TV. It was about the cambodian people still struggling with the aftermath of the Khmer Rouge Regime. Life is hard for the average Khmer, yet hardly any interviewee complained about their life. Near the end of the film there was this scene in a temple with around 50 kids. Once a year, at some holiday, all the buddhas in the temples get washed. And those kids had the biggest waterfight ever right there in this temple. It looked like so much fun… I wonder what a catholic priest would say to 50 children pouring water over statues and themselves in his church? I’d like to see that…

5 Reasons Why I Travel 2007-04-27 20:45:44
Stacy from Rambling Travel
er just tagged me a few days ago to tell her 5 reasons why i travel. I just recently wrote a little post about this topic, but didn’t really elaborate on my reasons, so here we go:
I love the excitement, that’s always in the air when traveling. I mean, most likely the “big” adventure won’t happen, but it just seems possible that someone hands me a map to a secret beach…
Life is so simple on the road. I find this strangely comforting. Everything I own and need, I carry with me in my backpack. No need for a car, an apartment or a tv and no desire to own all that either.
Cultures other than my own have always fascinated me; it’s almost like a charm. There’s so many things to see and experience and so many different people to meet out there, I don’t see how I could spend my whole life back home.
The only way to experience more freedom than when traveling is to go skinny dipping. When you’re out a Read more:Reasons

Happy days on Samui
I had been living on Koh Samui in Thailand for almost half a year and it had been exciting and fun. I was sharing a house with Laurent, a french frogman, opposite Big Buddha Pier in Ban Bang Rak and we had a ball there. Diving by day, watching the sunset by dusk and going dancing, meeting friends for dinner or having a party or a barbeque by night. Life was easy, chilled out and great fun. Nevertheless, I felt ready to leave, go some place else, move on. Six months in one place was a long time for me then. Most of us left Samui around the same time.
About a year later said frogman asked me to work for him at his new dive school over on Koh Lanta. I took the chance to visit some friends on Koh Tao and Samui before getting stuck into work. But while being on Koh Tao was fine, I couldn’t stand Samui. Everything seemed sad, miserable and sleazy. Where before the island had been a fun place to be, now that my friends from before were missing, ‘my Samui&rs Read more:Rather

My 10 Most Favorite Places In SE Asia 2007-04-29 19:40:16
Recently Timen has asked me to give him some recommendations where to go to in Southeast Asia
to learn to dive. This inspired me to come up with a list of my 10 most favorite spots (so far!) in that beautiful corner of the world.
Koh Lipe, ThailandFor the tranquility, the most beautiful beaches and great company.
Seraya, IndonesiaFor the absolute beauty and peace I experienced there.
Koh Lanta, ThailandFor the awesome diving and the best dive shop crew ever.
Hoi An, VietnamFor the great japanese architecture and all my drinking buddies.
Gili Trawangan, IndonesiaFor the sharks, the turtles and one of the best social lifes you can imagine.
Angkor Wat, CambodiaFor the fantastic scenery and the mystic atmosphere.
Mount Kinabalu, MalaysiaFor the view after total and utter exhaustion and the hot springs.
Pulau Perhentian Kecil, MalaysiaFor Captain Blackbeard, his booze runs and the best mango shakes on this planet.
Luang Prabang, LaosFor the funny monks and the beautiful temples.

Avoiding the Trap 2007-05-04 00:23:35
Wherever there are people with money, there will be other people trying to take some of that money away. Sometimes this is especially true when you are traveling. You are far away from home and thus you might seem an easy prey.
In 2001 I met a young german backpacker, let’s call him Hans, in the departure hall of Denpasar Airport on Bali. We were both waiting for the same flight to Darwin, so after a while he came over and we started chatting. He seemed a bit nervous and soon after he wanted to hear my opinion about something that had happened to him the night before.
He was just on the way out to get some food, when he was invited to join a few indonesian guys, who were drinking arrak near the reception of his guesthouse. They all got drunk and one of the indonesians, Bun, suggested to go to a bar and later to a nightclub. On the way to the bar Hans was asked if he’d mind if they pick up one of Bun’s friends. Once there, they found a game of poker under way.
backpack dilemma 2007-05-04 19:04:48 A while back I had this idea. I get rid of my dive bag and put all of my gear into my backpack. Brilliant, don’t know why I hadn’t thought of that before. My dive bag is ripped to pieces anyway, so that saves me having to buy a new one. Today I decided to give my idea a try. So in went my BCD, my fins, my wetsuit and my backpack was almost full. And I hadn’t even gotten any clothes in there, yet! So, I took my gear out and put one piece in at a time and stuffed the remaining space with clothes. This will mean that my clothes will always be extremely wrinkled, but then, I don’t think I’m likely to win a Best Dressed Man Competition anyways. At least this will work, although my wetsuit will have to stay home. And this I am really unhappy about, I mean I have no problem peeing into my wetsuit (can be quite an enjoyable experience on a cold night dive), but peeing into a rental one is just gross…

My Top 10 Dive Spots In SE Asia 2007-05-08 00:32:30
Following my 10 most favorite places in Southeast Asia
I decided to post my favorite dive spots. I haven’t been to many of the world class dive sites in the area, like Richelieu Rock or Sipadan, so this list reflects merely my personal top 10.
Hin Daeng & Hin Muang, Koh Lanta, ThailandThese are my absolute favorites. There’s the big stuff, like Mantas and Whale Sharks, and little critters, like the Harlequin Shrimp. Because of the depth and the sometimes quite strong current both those sites are not really suited for greenhorn divers.
Batu Bolong, Flores, IndonesiaI had a fantastic dive here with three octopus. They were following and holding on to each other while weird patterns were pulsating down their bodies. Looked like an octopoda threesome to me. Just awesome!! The current was just unbelievable; in places so strong that our bubbles went straight down…
Shark Point, Gili Trawangan, IndonesiaProbably the only dive site on earth, where you are surrounded

What’s Been Happening Lately 2007-05-13 11:46:35 I feel the need to apologize for the lack of fresh content lately on travel-junkie.com, but as you might know I am leaving in a few days for Melbourne and there is still loads to do. To add to all this my brother has decided to move to Munich a few weeks ago and has just now found a new apartment, so I’ll help him get some of his stuff over there as well.
A few days ago I couldn’t find my passport. I was almost panicking. Searched for a full hour until I remembered that I might have left it in the car. Thankfully it was there!! There’s no way I could have gotten a replacement before I’m supposed to fly off and I never bother with travel cancellation insurance. Would have cost me loads of money…
Last friday was my leaving party. Thankfully I wasn’t working yesterday. Felt horrible the whole day. Maybe I should just not drink for a while, like Paul, from travmonkey.com, but then that would be extremely difficult in the next week or two, so maybe later Read more:Happening
And So The Adventure Begins 2007-05-17 12:39:40 My bags are packed and I’m ready go. I actually managed to fit all my stuff in just my backpack. It weighs close to 16 kilos, with the bulk, maybe 10 kg, made up by my dive gear. It feels bloody heavy, but it’ll be a lot better than carrying an extra dive bag around with me. The gear will kind of garantee at least some income, so it’s worth lugging it around.
My jetplane leaves at 4 pm today, so I’ve still got a few hours to kill. Today I’m just flying to London. I’m going to visit some friends there and down on the coast in Dorset. Then on sunday I’m booked on to a Quantas flight to Melbourne with a short 2-hour-stopover in Hongkong.
I’ve spent a lot of time away from home, but I still get nervous a bit every time I leave. Once I’m on the plane it’ll be fine, though. There’s a reason why alcohol is for free on board. Calmes down the nerves. That’s a reason as well why all the cheap airlines will never be able to t Read more:Adventure
