Strange Tambon creation announcement
2008-11-13 06:39:00
I came across a very strange Royal Gazette announcement while processing the subdistrict creations of Maha Sarakham province. The announcement, titled and written in absolutely the same style as the normal subdistrict announcements, seems to announce simply the status quo.Published on October 26 1971 (Volume 88, Issue 113 ง, Page 3000-3003), the announcement seems to be on the creation of subdis

Same procedure as last month
2008-11-12 06:09:00
Today Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin, just reelected one month ago, resigned because the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC) decided yesterday that he is guilty in the fire truck case and provided his case to the court. The ludicrous thing - as far as I know the only thing Apirak did in this case was to follow the contract with the Austrian company who delivered the trucks. He inher

Provincial emblem stamp series and the Royal Gazette
2008-11-10 06:25:00
It's funny what to find what is announced in the Royal Gazette additional to those things I normally process. I was checking for announcements on the emblems, either the provincial or the municipal, but all I found were emblems of the judiciary areas, and those of the land registration office in various provinces. But - I also found was an announcement titled ประกาศกระทรว

Monthon Pattani Scout Flag
2008-11-07 06:27:00
15 of the Monthon had a flag of the regional troop of the scouts, which are interesting since they first use symbols which later got used in the provincial seals. As the first of these flags I now feature the one of Monthon Pattani, the administrative entity which covered the area of the three southernmost muslim provinces - though at that times it still were four provinces: Pattani, Narathiwat, Y

Tambon creation from more than one parent Tambon
2008-11-06 06:18:00
Another statistical fun with the subdistrict creations made possible with the processing of the Royal Gazette announcements into XML. In most cases, a newly created subdistrict (tambon) is created by splitting one subdistrict, so some of the muban of the parent subdistrict get reassigned to the new subdistrict. However, more rarely muban from two subdistricts are placed together to form the new su

Rang Wai municipality announced
2008-11-05 06:13:00
Published in the Royal Gazette today (Volume 125, Issue พิเศษ 173 ง, Page 18) is the announcement on the upgrade of TAO Rang Wai (องค์การบริหารส่วนตำบลรางหวาย), Phanom Thuan district, Kanchanaburi Province, to a subdistrict municipality (เทศบาลตำบลรางหวาย). To make it more confusing, there was a

Preconditions for municipal status changes
2008-11-04 06:10:00
Back when I still did not understand the difference between Tambon and Thesaban Tambon, I had run across a report titled "Urban Problems of the Chiangmai City" by Somsak Upapan, which amoung other things listed the necessary proconditions for an area to become a municipality of one of the three levels. Sadly, that website if no longer available, but luckily archive.org has the old version. Accord

Most subdistricts created in one province in a year?
2008-11-03 06:13:00
Still working through the many subdistrict creation announcements, another notable peculiarity showed up. In 1975 a total of 15 subdistricts were created in Lopburi province, and another 8 the following year, while normally especially in such a rather small province only one or two subdistricts got created in one year. Even more striking is the fact that these subdistricts 15 were created in the s

Districts in Surat Thani before 1917
2008-10-31 07:26:00
I have one book specifically on Surat Thani province, which my mother-in-law found me some years ago after being disappointed with what was available in the web.I haven't asked her where she found it, but it quite obviously was a used book, the cover already torn a bit, and it has some notes and underlining in the text. And it was printed on rather cheap paper, as it is now already quite brownish.

Emblem of TAO San Pu Loei, Doi Saket, Chiang Mai
2008-10-30 07:20:00
By same random googleing I came across the website of the subdistrict municipality San Pu Loei (เทศบาลตําบลสันปูเลย) in Doi Saket district, Chiang Mai. While the website has nothing special - only a small part is available in English, but at least it has an English section, normally the websites of the municipalities or TAO are exclusively in Thai. But what

Leaders of the administrative entities
2008-10-29 07:38:00
In my Thai language class we came across the question on how to translate the term "mayor" (actually, the German "Bürgermeister") to Thai. While I suggested simply นายกเทศบาล (nayok thesaban), the dictionary said นายกเทศมนตรี (nayok thesamontri). So this made me create the following list of the names for the leaders of the various administrative entitie

The Muang conspiracy
2008-10-28 07:11:00
There's a new political blog I only discovered because the author has made his readership of my blog public. Named "The Muang Conspiracy" it won't be on the current political chaos in Thailand, or commenting news on other current issues, but instead the author intends to post and discuss radical political ideas. One of the ideas he already presented is to implement more decentralization, not jus

Strange subdistrict geocodes
2008-10-27 07:22:00
The geocode list contains several codes which unlike the normal geocodes do not start from 1, but instead from 99 and counting down. All of these are marked with an asterisk, so they are obsolete codes. It seems these are only found for subdistricts in districts, which were split off from a larger district in the 1970s. For example, the four subdistricts of Kho Wang in Yasothon Province each have

Provincial badges of Thai Scouts
2008-10-24 06:35:00
On the website ThaiScouting, one of the many high-quality websites made by or under supervision of Richard Barrow at the Sriwittayapaknam School in Samut Prakan, it has two pages which depict badges worn at the back of the scarfs of the scouts. Every province has its own badge (ตราผ้าผูกคอลูกเสือประจำจังหวัด), which is most cases uses the

Happy birthday Blog
2008-10-23 06:24:00
Today this blog celebrates it's first anniversary, and surprisingly I haven't quickly run out of topics to write about but instead found several new interesting things while researching for postings, always having several new postings almost ready for publication. I am now well above 200 postings, and have a posting nearly every day, while in the beginning I thought once a week would be a lot alre

District office of Phunphin
2008-10-22 06:27:00
The Phunphin district (อำเภอพุนพิน) with its central town Tha Kham (เทศบาลเมืองท่าข้าม) is the transportation hub of Surat Thani province, especially as the southern railway passes through this town and not the city Surat Thani itself - that is located about 15km to the east. Also the main road from north to south through the province, nati

Provincial governor reshuffle
2008-10-21 06:11:00
Despite all the current political chaos in Thailand, the annual reshuffle of the administrative posts was done as usual effective October 1st, the start of the new fiscal year. So far I only know that the governor of Chanthaburi, Prajuck Suvarnapakdee (ประจักษ์ สุวรรณภักดี), was reassigned to Nakhon Ratchasima, as that was changed in Wikipedia just recently.

When was the DOPA geocode system introduced?
2008-10-20 06:27:00
From the district creations I earlier suspected that the geocode system was started in the early 1980s, and working through the subdistricts a similar timing seems to fit. Though often even the subdistricts created in the 1970s still have their geocode in th chronological order, all those created since the early 1980s are in that order. There are a few odd cases however which would only be explai

Provincial emblem stamp series, part 3

The third issue of the stamp series with the provincial emblems was published on October 10, this time featuring the emblems of the 10 provinces Pattani, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Phang-nga, Phatthalung, Phayao, Phichit, Phitsanulok, Phetchaburi, Phetchabun and Phrae. According to SiamStamp, this issue #856 has a circulation of 900,000 sheets, and 15,000 first day covers. The design of the stamps

Census of 1904
2008-10-15 06:10:00
As it was recommended at the New Mandala blog, I got myself the book Creating Laos and am currently reading it. While obviously most of the content is off-topic for this blog, I have just came across an interesting bit on the first national census in Siam in the year 1904. For the author the main point is that there was no distinction between a Lao and a Thai ethnicity in this census, while Mon an

Historical photo of a province hall
2008-10-14 06:48:00
I found the photo below in the book "History of Lanna" by Saratsawadi Ongsakun, a great resource on the history of northern Thailand. The photo shows a province hall sometime around 1900, when the provinces were still named Mueang instead of Changwat. The sign over the entrance reads ที่ว่าการเมือง (Thiwagan Mueang), a name now only used for the district offices which

Aborted district creations
2008-10-13 06:13:00
I mentioned them earlier, there are geocodes already assigned for districts which are not yet existing. I am listing those for Phitsanulok below. Unlike that subdistrict geocode, these codes weren't listed in any of the files on the DOPA website. 6510: Sap Phrai Wan (กิ่งอำเภอทรัพย์ไพรวัลย์) or Kaeng Sopha (กิ่งอำเภอแก่งโส

Names of newly created Muban
2008-10-10 06:38:00
Other than originally planned I already processed the announcements on the creation of muban since 2003. While working through them, I have notice some interesting small facts on the naming of these entities. As mentioned before, the names of muban are not unique, quite often one settlement is divided into several muban all sharing the same name. So it is not surprising that for the muban created i

Elected TAO chairmen

It's good that the National News Bureau of Thailand keeps all the old news reports on their site, so that Google can find some gems in between them. Requirements for the thesaban levels
2008-12-02 06:13:00
I had raised the question here shortly ago, and now Rikker could answer it simply by reading the law texts accessible via the Royal Gazette online database. All these information I was unable to find in English anywhere, and now he updated the corresponding Wikipedia article including the links to the law texts, so now these facts are easily accessible for non-Thai as well.Thesaban Nakhon (City)19

Outstanding district officer award
2008-12-01 06:20:00
Today the governor of the Department of Local Administration (DOPA) will (or probably already has) given an award to several district officer s (Nai Amphoe, นายอำเภอ). The award is named นายอำเภอของประชาชน, which translates to "district officer of the people" and is awarded annually. The ceremony is presided by the Interior Minister Kowit Wattana (

Muban lists coming?
2008-11-28 06:07:00
Google found several Excel sheets at the website of the Department of Provincial Administration (DOPA), which turn out to be lists of all the villages (muban) together with their geocode. Interesting to read are the comments at the bottom, which (if I did not misunderstood them completely) ask for to check the names of the villages, mark those which are in error in red and state the reason why the

Confusing Thai administrative structures
2008-11-27 06:28:00
It is not only me who got (and still sometimes gets) confused by the administrative structure, and especially the parallel local and central government entities. As so often, Google made me discover the short essay Civil service controls much of regional and local government, which contains several mistakes easily made when not knowing the details. I don't want to ridicule the author for his mista
