Photo of incredible red sunset in northern Norway - The sky and clouds are on fire
2007-10-01 05:03:47
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on September 30th 2007. Click image for larger view. The last day in September brought us some very nice weather here in northern Norway . I had to take a photo of this incredible red sunset that topped the day. I hope my readers haven’t become tired of all my sunsets pictures Information about the picture: Camera: Olympus E-500 digital SLR camera Exposure: 0.01 sec (1/100) Aperture: f/4.1 Focal Length: 104 mm ISO Speed: 200 Lens: Olympus Zuiko Digital 40-150mm F3.5-4.5 Location: Laupstad, Andørja (Ibestad) in northern Norway Share This

Photo of White Wagtail (Motacilla alba) - A sure sign of spring and autumn in northern Norway
2007-09-30 05:05:02
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on May 11th 2007. Click image for larger view. The white wagtail (Motacilla alba) is a sure sign that the spring has come to northern Norway . It is one of the last birds that come flying back from their winter “holiday” in Africa. The white wagtail is also one of the last birds to fly away from northern Norway late in the autumn. I still see some white wagtails around here, but it is a matter of weeks, if not days, until they all migrate to Africa. Sometimes I wish I could migrate to warmer climates when the winter gets rough. I love watching the white wagtail chasing insects to feed on as it is a very good at flying and follow the insects every move. Information about the picture: Camera: Olympus E-500 digital SLR camera Exposure: 0.013 sec (1/80) Aperture: f/4.5 Focal Length: 150 mm ISO Speed: 100 Lens: Olympus Zuiko Digital 40-150mm F3.5-4.5 Location: Ånstad, Andørja (Ibestad) in northern Norway Share This

Blog Action Day - Nature is under threat in northern Norway
2007-10-14 18:01:29
Today over 14,000(!!) bloggers will blog about environmental issues as a part of the Blog Action Day. I feel very strong about environmental issues because I grew up close to the nature and as I grew older I understood all the threat s against mother earth. The biggest threat up here in the north is probably against life in the ocean. The fisheries are getting more and more efficient and the fish stocks are in real danger of collapsing. In recent years oil companies have started to drill for gas and oil up here in the north. Any spills from this will have be a disaster for the fish stocks and bird populations. There is also great concern for what the drilling itself does to the life in the ocean. And who knows what results will come from global warming… We can all try a little harder to take care of the nature and Blog Action Day is a good way of reminding ourselves to take more care of the nature Here is a few examples from my photo collection of reasons why I want to preserv

Winter has come to northern Norway - Photo of waves on the coast
2007-10-12 09:06:19
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera October 11th 2007. Click image for larger view. The winter has come to northern Norway as you can see by the snow covered mountains in this picture. The snow comes from the north in “waves” and I was able to do some photographing in between all the snow. I love photos of moving water so had a great time standing at the shore trying to capture the waves as they came crashing in. Loved the splash in this picture. Information about the picture: Exposure: 1/2500 sec Aperture: f/2.8 Focal Length: 11 mm ISO Speed: 100 Lens: Olympus Zuiko Digital 11-22mm F2.8-3.5 Location: Laupstad (Andørja), Troms in northern Norway Share This

Close up photo of hoverfly feeding on an autumn hawkbit flower
2007-10-11 13:00:02
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera September 30th 2007. Click image for larger view. This is probably my last insect photo this year as the snow came to northern Norway today. In this picture you can see a hoverfly (not sure about the species) feed on an autumn hawkbit (Leontodon autumnalis var. taraxaci) flower . This flower looks a bit like coltsfoot, but autumn hawkbit flowers, like the name implies, in the autumn. I’m starting to get a collection of pictures of hoverflies feeding on flowers. Here are a few pictures: Hoverfly feeding on cow parsley flowers Hoverfly on a poppy flower Hoverfly on dandelion flower Information about the picture: Camera: Olympus E-500 digital SLR camera Exposure: 0.006 sec (1/160) Aperture: f/11 Focal Length: 35 mm ISO Speed: 200 Lens: Olympus Zuiko Digital 35mm F3.5 Macro Location: Laupstad (Andørja), Troms in northern Norway Share This

Wide angle picture of Norwegian harbor bathed in sunset

Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera September 30th 2007. Click image for larger view. In this photo you can see the harbor where my boat is placed. I was walking home from a fishing trip when I noticed the nice reflection the sunset made inside of the seawall. Love the view you get from using a wide angle lens. Check out this winter photo from the harbor and here is a picture of waves crashing over the seawall. I signed up for PayPerPost
2007-10-10 05:48:47
There will be some minor changes to “Photos from northern Norway” as I have signed up for PayPerPost . PayPerPost is a concept where you get paid to write about relevant products, sites, etc. In the future you will see a few sponsored posts in between all my photos. I will be selective and only post about stuff that are relevant to this site and things that I’m interested in. Check out their blog page if you are interested in their services. I hope to earn a few bucks to finance this very expensive hobby called photography. I have been drooling over a lens with longer reach to start with bird photography. Taking bird photos was the main reason for buying a DSLR camera, but I never got around to buy a zoom lens. Hope this will change in the future. Lately I have been have some problems with post processing my photos because my computer is getting very old and can’t really handle heavy programs like Photoshop and Lightroom. Too continue taking photos it seems like

Macro photo of Wolf spider on birch bark
2007-10-08 05:48:07
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera April 19th 2007. Click image for larger view. In this macro photo you can see a wolf spider (Lycosidae). The wolf spiders got their name from the way they hunt as they run down their prey much like wolves do. It is usually very hard to get close to wolf spiders to get a picture, but this photo was taken back in April when there was still patches of snow here in northern Norway. This spider was warming itself in the sun and didn’t care about me coming very close with my camera. Please at the picture in large size to get a view of all the details of the wolf spider. I don’t have many pictures of spiders, but I have one of an ant dragging a spider. Check it out if you are interested in insect photography. Found this stream when I was walking in the forest and since I love photos of running water I had to take a picture of the stream with autumn colored leaves laying around. I used a longer shutter speed to create the “foggy” effect on the water. View more autumn pictures from northern Norway here. Picture of rural winter scenery in northern Norway - The sun has just come back
2007-10-04 04:35:25
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on February 15th 2007. Click image for larger view. In this photo you see the house where I lived my first 12 years. It looks very idyllic in this winter scenery , doesn’t it? The place where the house stands is called “Solhaug”. In English it would be called something like “Sun Hill”. The picture was taken on 15th of February so the sun had just come back here in northern Norway . The sun was still very low in the horizon so that is why it creates this beautiful and special light. Check out this photo of the same house, but from another angle where you can see how close it is located to the ocean. Information about the picture: Camera: Olympus E-500 digital SLR camera Exposure: 0.01 sec (1/100) Aperture: f/5.6 Focal Length: 34 mm ISO Speed: 100 Lens: Olympus Zuiko Digital 14-45mm F3.5-5.6 Location: Laupstad, Andørja (Ibestad) in northern Norway Share This

Close up picture of Ocean Quahog (Arctica islandica) shells on a sandy beach
2007-10-17 07:58:51
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera October 11th 2007. Click image for larger view. These shells are called Ocean Quahog (Arctica islandica) and I had to take a photo of them because I liked the way the pair was placed on the sandy beach. In Norwegian we call them Cow-Shells, probably because of their beautiful red/brown color. According to the Norwegian Wikipedia (the English version doesn’t have an article about ocean quahog shells) there have been found individuals of these shells that are as old as 220 years! Check out my macro photo of a limpet shell. Photo of mountain being illuminated - Blizzard in northern Norway
2007-10-16 04:22:54
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera October 11th 2007. Click image for larger view. This photo is from a day filled with strong winds and heavy snow, but there can be nice moments even in a blizzard. I took this photo when there suddenly was an opening in the clouds and the sun shined on the mountain (it’s a mountain on Senja, Norway ). I think this scenery almost looks like it’s taken out of an old painting. Nature is the greatest artist there is, in my humble opinion Information about the picture: Exposure: 0.002 sec (1/640) Aperture: f/4.5 Focal Length: 150 mm ISO Speed: 100 Lens: Olympus Zuiko Digital 40-150mm F3.5-4.5 Location: Laupstad (Andørja), Troms in northern Norway Share This

Picture of river using a 10 seconds long exposure
2007-10-22 04:45:57
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera October 21st 2007. Click image for larger view. In this picture I have used a 10 seconds long exposure to create the foggy and metallic look on the river. I love the look running waters gets from long exposures. It has to be pretty dark to be able to get long exposures or use a special filter. I don’t have a filter like that so I had to wait for twilight. The forest seems very different when it gets dark. A bit spooky Check out this long exposure picture I took of a rocky beach. Picture of sunset reflection in a puddle - An opening in the sky
2007-10-24 12:10:29
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera October 21st 2007. Click image for larger view. I found the reflection in the puddle, of the the sunset clouds, to be very beautiful. The reflection looks even more beautiful than the real clouds. A simple puddle can create nice pictures if you use your imagination The weather has been very bad the last few days here in northern Norway so I welcomed this opportunity to photograph the small opening in the heavy layers of clouds. Maybe I should go outside and photograph the bad weather? Information about the picture: Exposure: 0.04 sec (1/25) Aperture: f/11 Focal Length: 11 mm ISO Speed: 100 Lens: Olympus Zuiko Digital 11-22mm F2.8-3.5 Location: Ånstadbotn (Andørja), Troms in northern Norway Share This

Picture of winter moon - The closest you get to seeing the sun during the winter in Northern Norway
2007-11-01 05:24:55
Taken with Canon A70 digital camera winter 2006. Click image for larger view. I took this photo very early in the morning (6 AM) when I saw the beautiful moon lightning up the landscape. As this picture was taken in the middle of the winter, moonlight is the closest we get to see the sun in Northern Norway . Today is the first of November. That means I have about 17 days left with sunlight before the sun disappears.. I used a cheap compact camera in this shot so that is why the quality is a bit crappy, but I think it’s still a beautiful scene if you don’t pixel peep. Have you checked out the Photos from Northern Norway 2008 calendar? I have been getting some very good reviews of it Share This

Pictures of Willow tit (Poecile montana) - A fearless bird
2007-11-08 13:12:04
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera November 8th 2007. Click image for larger view. In these pictures you can see willow tit birds (Poecile montana). It was amazing to see how fearless these birds are. I could stand 1 meter away from the willow tit and photograph it. I was even able to use my flash, as they got used to it after a couple of shots. I have to try if they will eat from my hand. Notice the falling sunflower seed in bottom left corner of the first picture. The willow tit kept filling it’s small beak with lots of seeds, but some fell out I have been observing the birds as they hide seeds so they food during the winter. I been reading about the black capped chickadee (a bird living on the American continent that look very much like the willow tit) and it’s said that it can remember thousands of hiding spots. I wouldn’t be surprised if the willow tit have the same capability. The nature is amazing Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera November 8th 200

Picture of river starting to freeze in Northern Norway

Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera November 7th 2007. Click image for larger view. The rivers have started to freeze here in Northern Norway and in this pictures you can see drops from the small water fall have frozen on branches and straws. I used 15 seconds exposure in this photo to get the look of the water fall. Macro pictures of withered calendula flowers (pot marigold) - Last remains of summer in Northern Norway

In these photos I have captured the last remains of summer here in Northern Norway . These flowers are from the calendula plant, also known as pot marigold. I was amazed how long these plants were able to survive. They were even flowering after some nights with frost. The first photo is of an orange calendula flower that look relatively fresh. Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera November 19th 2007. Click image for larger view. These yellow calendula flowers, though, look like they had to cave in for the colder season. Picture of flying raven against a snowy winter mountain in Northern Norway

Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera February 24th 2007. Click image for larger view. In this photo I was lucky enough to catch the raven when it was divided between the blue sky and the snowy mountain. Macro photo of pink primula flowers with water drops
2007-12-06 14:09:53
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera May 3rd 2007. Click image for larger view. Time for a picture from the spring to remind ourselves of warmer times to come The Primula got it’s name from the Latin word Primus that means “the first one”. It got it’s name because it is one of the first flowers to blossom in the spring. The flowers are native to the temperate Northern Hemisphere, south into high altitude tropical mountains in Ethiopia, Indonesia and New Guinea, and are also found in temperate southern South America. There are amazingly 400-500 species of Primula and some of species are called primrose, auricula, cowslip and oxlip. I have just seen a handful, but there are some really nice color combinations out there. Up here in the north it is a very usual garden flower and it is spreading everywhere. Have you got Primula in your garden? Feel free to leave a comment Check out a few other flower pictures I have photographed: Taking pictures while laying i

Picture of Norwegian winter mountain with snow blowing off the peaks

Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera November 28th 2007. Click image for larger view. The dark season is definitely here with very little light during the day. The weather has been mostly boring with overcast almost every day, but on this day the sky was clear. There was some nice blue tones to be seen such as in this picture. If you look at the photo in large format you can see the wind blowing snow off the mountain peaks. Must be extremely cold on top of those mountains (they are located on an island called Grytøya) You can see the same mountains here, but in an early spring scene.
