Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on June 24th, 2007. Click image for larger view. These hoverflies are so fascinating and beautiful. Their beauty doesn’t get hurt from sitting on a poppy flower . The blue spots in the background are forget-me-not flowers. Check out my other hoverfly picture here. Photo of two cruise ships sailing the Norwegian coast

Cruise ships are a very common sight here in northern Norway, during the summer. Often you can see several cruise liners in the horizon. Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on June 29th 2007. Click image for larger view. I really liked the clouds on this photo. Can’t be too bad being a tourist on that ship with a scenery like that. Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on June 29th 2007. Click image for larger view. Liked the contrast between the two ships on this picture. They are both filled with tourists, but I think I would prefer to be in the small boat. Recent years there has been an increasing number of fishing tourists coming here from Germany, Finland and Sweden. Hope they do not catch all my fish Information about the pictures: Camera: Olympus E-500 digital single-lens reflex camera Lens: Olympus Zuiko Digital 40-150mm F3.5-4.5 Location: Laupstad, Andørja (Ibestad) in northern Norway Share This

Macro photo of a dance fly couple mating and eating a fly
2007-06-27 18:53:25
This is a horror story from my garden! I was walking around enjoying the nice weather and then I noticed some weird looking large flies. After closer inspection it wasn’t just one fly, it was three! Two dance flies were mating and consuming a fly. So I had to document it with my camera and show it to you. View the photos large to see more details of natures wonders. Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on June 24th, 2007. Click image for larger view. Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on June 24th, 2007. Click image for larger view. Dance flies (Empididae) is a family of flies with over 3000 species. This is possibly Empis tesselata. They are hunters that capture their prey with the sharp snout as you can see on the pictures. The males swarm in small groups (thats how they got the name) and each male holds a fly. If a female should fly by, the males offer their prey to her. She chooses the best prey and mates with the male while sucking the fly dry. Information about the

Photo from a warm day on the coast in northern Norway

Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on June 22nd 2007. Click image for larger view. What beautiful and warm day here at the coast in northern Norway . I really like it when it’s 20C and slightly overcast. Anything warmer get to hot for my arctic body Here I’m crawling between pebbles trying to make a good composition at ground level while not getting too wet from water seeping in from the ocean. When I take pictures I always think “How can I make this scene/subject more interesting” thus I often find myself in back-breaking positions. What are your opinions on this photo? Macro photo of hoverfly on dandelion flower
2007-06-22 21:29:46
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on June 21st, 2007. Click image for larger view. This is a hoverfly (Syrphidae), also know as flower flies, that are feeding on a dandelion flower. I have been trying to figure out what kind of species it is and I believe it is a Leucozona lucorum. From the looks of the hoverfly it seems to be mimicking a bee. Lately my photography have been concentrated on taking macro photos because there are so many insects buzzing around. When I’m seen outside I’m usually on my knees hunting for new subjects to photograph. I have discovered several new insects that I have never seen before and have got to know the names of several insects. I have been having some challenges with my macro lens. It is has a focal length of 35mm which means I have to get really, really close to the subject to get a nice close up. To get so close can be really hard with camera-shy insects like hoverflies or butterflies. So here is my photography tip of the day: If you

Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on July 9th, 2007. Click image for larger view. Roseroot (Rosenrot in Norwegian) is a plant that lives in the colder climate areas like the Arctic and it’s growing throughout Norway. You can often find it growing straight out of cliff sides. In the recent years there have been lots of fuss about the roseroot plant because it is said to have many medical qualities, but it has actually been used in folk medicine for over 3000 years. Later studies has shown roseroot to be a great medical herb. The list of beneficial qualities is long! Roseroot is known to improve memory, good against depression, stabilize blood pressure, reducing stress hormones, contains lots of antioxidants, stabilize cholesterol and blood sugar levels and probably much more. There is also being done research to check its qualities against cancer. I have to mention that roseroot is a libido booster for both woman and men so I guess you can call it natures own viagra! Photo of Arctic Skua / Parasitic Jaeger bird

Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on July 4th 2007. Click image for larger view. This is an Arctic Skua (Stercorarius parasiticus) also known as Parasitic Jaeger in North America. These birds are so fascinating to observe (I know I say this a lot but there is nothing more fascinating than the nature) because they chase other birds like seagulls and terns. They are chasing other birds to get the birds to drop whatever they are eating. Skuas are the pirates of the bird world! I found a couple of arctic skuas on a marsh pretty far inland. They were probably breeding because a fox came by and the birds attacked it violently. Did I say that I find the nature extremely fascinating? Here is another photo of the bird sitting on the marsh. Pictures from a mountain trip filled with fog
2007-07-19 15:40:14
These photos are from a trekking trip up in the mountains a few days ago. I saw some fog coming in from the Atlantic ocean and wanted to get high up in the mountains to get some pictures of the mountains above the fog. Arriving I found out that the fog was covering everything including the mountain peaks. The fog made the scenery looking very mystic so I had to take some photos inside the fog. Here is a picture from a small valley filled with fog as the fog comes rolling in with the wind. This is at the highest altitude trees grow so this is the last trees you see when you trek the mountain. Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on July 15th 2007. Click image for larger view. I found the frog pretty far up in the mountains and I was surprised because I have never seen frogs in this area before. Frogs are supposed to be an biological indicator that are able to tell us whether the environment is healthy or unhealthy. The reason for this is that frogs are very sensitive to pollution and habitat degradation. I’m very happy that I found this frog because it means the nature around here is healthy If you view the picture large you can actually see an ant below the frog on left side. Close up pictures of bumblebees - our chubby insect friend

Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on July 23rd, 2007. Click picture for larger view. I have always been fascinated by bumblebees and whenever I get the opportunity I try to photograph these chubby insect s. It’s not always so easy because they can be very camera shy and get annoyed if you get too close. In the first picture you can see a bumblebee relaxing on a leave. If you click the picture and look at it large you can see that bumblebees have claw like feet. Must be great to have feet like that when you are clinging to flowers. Picture of Fireweed / Rosebay Willowherb flowers - sign of coming autumn
2007-07-28 05:21:35
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on July 28th, 2007. Click picture for larger view. The fireweed, also known as Rosebay Willowherb in Britain, (Epilobium angustifolium) have started to flower so I had to take photos of them. They are very nice to look at, but I have some mixed feelings about fireweed. The reason for this is that they start to flower late in the summer. Some weeks later they will produce millions upon millions of seeds (80,000 per plant!) that have white silky hairs and can be carried with the wind. It often looks like it’s snowing if there are lots of fireweed growing in the area. For me this is a clear sign of autumn and I would like the summer to last a bit longer I looked up fireweed on Wikipedia and I had no idea that it could be used for food. Native Americans collects young shoots and mix them with other greens. They also use it for medicine. Have anyone tasted fireweed? Would be cool to try it in a salad. Steve, author of the great blog cyrum66, recently wanted another picture as desktop background (thanks for the donation Steve!). So I got the idea to make this pebble picture available as a free download. Download the 1024×768 version of the picture here. Drop me a line if you should need an even larger version. I got it up to 3264×2448. The picture is only available for personal use and should not be used commercially. I would like to hear what my readers think of this idea. Think it can make my blog more popular? What you see on the picture is me experimenting with a long shutter time. I placed the camera on a tripod and made the camera take the photo for 10 seconds so small waves would roll over some of the pebbles. This make the foggy effect you can see on the right side of the pi

Photos of cloudberry plants - different stages of flowering and berries
2007-08-06 12:32:26
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on July 27th, 2007. Click picture for larger view. I have taken some pictures of the cloudberry plant in different stages of flowering and the final product as a tasteful berry (as you can see in the photo above). The cloudberry plant (Rubus chamaemorus), or bakeapple as it is called some places, is slow growing sub-arctic specie that is a very important berry here in northern Norway. Cloudberries are mainly used as jam, with whipped cream, in cakes and some even make alcoholic drinks out of the berries. When the berries are ripe there is a lot of competition among people to get a good harvest. There have even been reports of fighting Thus the price on cloudberries can be as high as 18-20$/kg. The following pictures are of the cloudberry plant in different stages of flowering. Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on June 14th, 2007. Click picture for larger view. Macro photo of potato flower - soon time for harvest

These flowers are of a Norwegian potato species called Troll. When the potato plants start flowering you know that they are soon ready for harvest. I can’t wait to start digging up the potatoes and serve them with fresh fish that I have caught in the sea! Nothing taste better than food you have produced or caught yourself. When I was studying the potato flower I noticed that they look very similar to tomato flowers. Photo of an old fishing boat being lightened by a red sunset against a magnificent mountain

Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on August 8th 2007. Click image for larger view. I found this old fishing boat when I was out photo walking on the beach. The sunsets are coming earlier now and this picture was taken at 9 PM. If you look closer at the old boat you can the red sunset light reflect on the white painting. I used the word magnificent in the title to describe the mountain because that was the word that popped up in my head a couple of days ago when I was looking at the mountains. I see these mountains every day so it’s easy to forgot how magnificent they really are. Wish you all could see them in real life since a simple photo doesn’t do them justice. Take a closer look at the upper right mountain. Can you see the snow spots? That mountain is called “The Snow Peak”. Very describing name considering that there is still snow on the mountain this late in the summer. Information about the picture: Camera: Olympus E-500 digital SLR camera Exposu
