Something To Munch On
2008-10-31 20:44:55
What attracted me to Carol Field’s Italy in Small Bites was the idea of small snacks throughout the day to sustain me. Wouldn’t that be amazing … if at any time of the day you could bite into something tasty, yet not filling? I’ve spent most of October dreaming about what I’d try from this [...]

Around the World in Sandwiches: A Top 5 List
2008-10-31 16:57:37
Now that the dollar has rebounded (20-25% stronger against the euro and pound, depending on the day) the only good news coming out of our seismic crash is the fact that some vacations, even international ones, may be vaguely thinkable. What makes them more thinkable is a recession-proof global food group like the sandwich. Sandwiches have been on my mind a lot lately. A piece on my life in sandwic

Keep the Halloween spirit going throughout the weekend with five savory orange-and-black treats that don’t involve food coloring or frosting. 1. Easy Shortcut: Make-Ahead Aromatic Pastes
2008-10-31 14:00:39
Since so many dishes start with an aromatic paste as a building block to adding deep flavor, we like to keep a batch on hand to give us a head start on dinner. Just finely chop any combination of aromatics — like shallot, onion, green onion, carrot, celery, ginger, garlic, lemongrass or chiles — in a [...]

What’s For Dinner?
2008-10-31 12:31:13
Tonight we're going to a Halloween block party (or road party as the case may be since we don't live on a block!) so I'm not sure what we're having. It's a covered dish deal. I'm taking a gluten free lasagna so Jamison will have something to eat and Alexis and I are going to make some cupcakes to take as well after she takes her nap. I'm told there will be a hay ride and all sorts of fun! Al

My Favorite Halloween Cookie Recipe
2008-10-31 11:44:14
Happy Halloween , everyone!  If you’ve been reading Pinch My Salt for over a year, this recipe might look a little familiar. And that’s because I posted it the day after Halloween last year. Yes, it was a little late then.  And yes, it’s a little late this year, too!  But hey, at least the holiday isn’t [...]

Root Source: Apple Cider
2008-10-31 11:00:46
Made from pressed apples (like Baldwin and McIntosh), cider is just juice that hasn’t been filtered. Autumn days make us crave cider’s tart, tangy, thirst-quenching quality. Apple Cider brought the Root Source Challenge recipes streaming in. Roasted vegetables and cider bread were truly tempting, but our favorite gem was a recipe for apple cider jelly. Congratulations [...]

Buying Votes With Cookies
2008-10-31 10:43:50
This isn’t a political blog. It never will be. But I do live in this world, and so do you, so I have to take a moment to say: apparently some people will sell their vote for homemade cookies! Seriously? Is that all it takes? I can do that. I’ll bake cookies (or make homemade candies - [...]

A Homemade Halloween Treat
2008-10-31 10:37:55
Today at work we're holding a bake sale for Cookies for Kids' Cancer, a wonderful charity about which Tanya Steel wrote a post a few weeks ago. I'm contributing this Chocolate–Pumpkin Seed Toffee with Sea Salt. I adapted the recipe from this one, subbing toasted pumpkin seeds for the peanuts to make it more Halloween -y. I also added nutmeg and sprinkled the finished product with sea salt for more

Five Ways for Kids to Avoid A Halloween Sugar Rush
2008-10-31 09:17:52
Kids around the country say that today is their favorite of the year. It just doesn't get any better than dressing up as some one or thing you're not whilst demanding candy from random people. This morning, I adjusted the werewolf mask on one of my twin sons and fixed the grim reaper chains on the other, and then sent them off to orchestra practice (playing the stand-up bass with sharp werewolf cl

Maryland Crab Soup A La Dianne
2008-10-31 08:52:46
I had intended to do a Halloween themed recipe for today, but it just didn't come together. So you'll have to settle for Maryland Crab Soup instead. Happy Halloween to all you out there that celebrate the spooky day and especially to my best friend Darlene, since it's her favorite holiday! Now let's talk some soup! I love crab. I'll readily admit though when I think of eating crab I think

Scary cupcake-theme Hallowen pumpkin!
2008-10-31 08:23:14
Happy Halloween, everyone! I hope you’re all done with your Halloween baking and are ready to sit back, carve a pumpkin and eat some candy this evening. My pumpkin this year had a definite baking theme: a skeletal arm holding up a cupcake. It was fairly easy to carve using a fine-blade pumpkin knife (one of [...]

Sugar High Friday: Spice Up Your Life! Part One
2008-10-31 02:00:00
There's a definite autumnal chill in the air here: the beloved San Francisco Indian summer has finally made its last farewell, I think, and brisk, crisp, fog-coat of fall is rolling in with gusto. Perfect timing, I do believe, for...

Cookie Monster
2008-10-31 00:24:44
Dark, overcast, and rainy days always seem to propel me into the kitchen. Seeking refuge from the threatening clouds, there’s no place I’d rather be than in from of a hot oven or warm stove. These conditions demand comfort food to ward off the gloomy feelings, so it’s never fancy fare, but it [...]

Greener Cleaners
2008-10-30 21:10:14
I don't know about you all, but I am starting to get a bit tired of all the inflated "green" hype. Don't get me wrong. I am all for reducing our carbon footprint, recycling, reusing and reinventing, and think we should ALL be doing more. What irks me are the unsubstantiated claims of being "green" that many companies boast even when all they may have done is start to use recycled packaging. While

HHDD #23: Chai Spiced Yogurt
2008-10-30 20:57:00
I am a yogurt fool. I have loved it pretty much since the first time I had a little supermarket-bought plastic tub. Since then, I’ve been going from brand to brand and type to type, discovering new and better varieties. A major high point (as would b...

Stage a scary halloween dinner
2008-10-30 17:37:23
Desserts are the best part of a Halloween party for me- after all, it’s a holiday that is essentially based around sugar, isn’t it? Aside from the desserts, I usually stick with “real” foods and make burgers or something else that is easy to cook and serve, especially if there is a crowd. I do [...]

Halloween Costume Ideas for Foodies
2008-10-30 16:34:21
Tomorrow's Halloween , and I am woefully unprepared for it. The last time I dressed up for Halloween, I was a "shadow." Not very creative since I was dressed in all black. Up until today, I was going to buy some bunny ears but thanks to Cityfile's collection of printable Halloween masks (first spotted on Eater), I can be Mario Batali for a few hours, and so can you! (For Mario Batali recipes in our
