An Unsolved Acrostic 2008-10-30 04:12:59 I've come across an obscure acrostic poem Carroll wrote for some friends in the 1860s, around the time he did "Alice." But no solution has survived. It's called "A Day in the Country" and is clever because it describes a day visiting the friends and photographing them, and the key words are PORTMANTEAU and PHOTOGRAPHY, both of which relate to the photography trip itself.
Some people have had a
Shropshire Stories - and Asian ones - and Canadian ones... 2008-10-29 15:25:17 Carroll was a great storyteller - and he was undoubtedly more interested in telling stories than in writing them down. He'd like Mythstories, and so do I. For ages I've been a fan of theirs (a long-distance one, mostly, since I'm in London and they're in Shropshire.

Alice in Wonderland, Boots, Shoes and Hallam Tennyson 2008-10-27 07:52:14 Alice in Wonderland
boots
I spotted these boots in one of the upmarket chains. They're called "Alice in Wonderland" boots, although I can't imagine why.
I've just come back from a short research trip, and have been looking at photos that Carroll took, as well as ones he bought and acquired from other photographers. I was struck by the peculiar shoes that children did wear then- very flat, almos Read more:Boots
Crossness and Cholera 2008-10-20 13:35:10 At Crossness Pumping Station
Sometimes I forget how long ago Carroll really lived, and then something happens to remind me. Went to Crossness Pumping Station which had an open day yesterday. This monumental bit of Victorian engineering was the brainchild of Sir Joseph Bazalgette, maestro of Victorian sewerage. Because Crossness was built to deal with South London's sewage, thousands if not milli
Alice in Scaryland 2008-10-16 11:23:00 Universal Studios Florida offers the chance to visit "Asylum in Wonderland"as part of its Halloween Horrornights. Looks a bit cheesy (although perhaps it will appeal to American McGee fans) but they have a nice website.
Carroll and his Cash 2008-10-15 04:20:23 I'm working on the chapter on Carroll
's bank account at present. As we were sitting in that windowless room in Barclay's Bank archives and transcribing the account from the ledgers, I became more and more astonished.
Carroll was well known to be (to put it rudely) a nitpicking fusspot, and yet the account showed him positively throwing his money around at times and running into the red as a res
Marilyn Manson and a Hall of Mirrors 2008-10-13 10:27:05 Marilyn Manson
has been offering his thoughts on becoming Lewis Carroll. His movie seems to have stalled, but I hope it gets made. I don't suppose Carroll was anything like Manson imagines him - the movie will be all about Manson, obviously, and Manson is a pretty interesting creative person.
Carroll's far more fascinating because even in his own lifetime he could reflect back what people want Read more:Marilyn

The White Rabbit Makes It To Venice 2008-10-12 03:47:11 The WhiteRabbit
in Venice
.
I've just spend a few days in Italy. In Venice, I decided to see how soon I could spot an "Alice" reference. There were innumerable carnival masks and amazing glass objets d'art in the shops but it didn't take long to spot a small White Rabbit coyly hiding amidst glass thimbles and masks.

Jurors - Lewis Carroll and the Law 2008-11-11 15:47:03 Jurors - This Is Me
I'm in the middle of jury duty. I think I see myself as the frog in this scene of the jury from "Alice in Wonderland." Our court is a bit more modern than LewisCarroll
's and Tenniel's. The juror's room is a bit like an airport lounge, actually - except (as one of the other jurors said) you're not going anywhere nice at the end of it.
And Since I'm At It... Vienna..... 2008-12-12 03:42:30 Looking through my photos I saw one taken while writing an article on Mozart in Vienna
. The Austrians and Germans always do Christmas better than anyone else. What the picture doesn't show is how freezing cold it was. We had to go into the cathedral and stand on the hot air vents in the end.
Mozart's very interesting and perhaps if I ever speak German well enough I may write a little book about
Portuguese Dinner 2008-12-12 03:36:48
I've been invited to the Portuguese
tourist board Christmas dinner - on the strength of the articles on the Alentejo (see last September). Being rather a Scrooge character, I rarely go out of my way to attend festive corporate events, but this sounds like fun. Here's another picture. It is a hilltop church and everything was very quiet up there in the little plaza, with enormous views out over Read more:Dinner
Blog award 2008-12-10 03:32:49 Marjorie Holme of Moonsilk Stitches tagged me for the Bookworm Award.
The rules for this award are: Open the book closest to you, not your favorite or most intellectual book, but the book closest to you at the moment, and turn to page 56. Write out the fifth sentence, as well as two to five sentences following that. And pass the award on to five blogging friends.

Carrying On Despite Endless Rejections 2008-12-08 09:23:02 My agent, Andrew Lownie says that "publishers are hardly commissioning anything, advances are down, contracts are being cancelled on any excuse, editors are taking early retirement or losing their jobs, bookshops report lower sales and it’s unlikely that the situation will improve next year...." and yet he is still getting 2,000 submissions a month from would-be authors!

I know it's not about Carroll but.... 2008-11-28 18:03:05 In odd moments, I'm putting together some travel articles to go in their own travel writing section of the site. I really want this site to show more about me as a general writer, but it's a matter of when I find the time at present.
I'm an associate member of the British Guild of Travel Writers although travel writing has taken a bit of a back seat in recent years. It's enormous fun and always Read more:Carroll
