My house is a mess!
2007-04-30 10:46:12
I find that one of the most difficult aspects of having a newborn baby is that my house descends into chaos.  Being a bit of a control freak I find it hard to let go!  This old ikea ad speaks volumes:

Theories about Children
2007-04-29 22:29:08
Before you have children you are convinced that you know how others should be bringing up their kids.  Then you have your own and you realise that all you had were theories and that raising kids is a little more complex than you had imagined!

Labour Bag Essentials
2007-04-29 21:59:37
Most mothers are advised to pack their labour bags at around week 36 or week 37.  Items worth including are as follows: For yourself: 2 x Night gowns.  Preferably made of a dark thin material (it is very hot on most labour wards) Magazines, books, music etc to help pass the time A few of your favourite drinks or snacks (you cannot usually get food on the labour ward and you could be there a while) Coins for phonecards (mobiles are generally not allowed) 5 pairs of black knickers (don't bother with the paper ones that disintegrate very quickly) 2 Nursing bras Pack of nightime, maxi STs. Your toiletries: toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, flannel Dark coloured towel Flip flops (these are great because they are easily washable and you can slip them on and off) Cardigan/dressing gown Going home clothes (don't be too optimistic about how much you will have shrunk!) Camera (having a baby makes everyone snap happy and you will want to photograph your new baby) F

Devon is Heaven

The family horse (called Bessie) had recently died and we were travelling to Devon for a holiday.  My son (confusing Devon with Heaven ) asked "Are we going to see Bessie in Heaven?"

I hate breastfeeding!
2007-05-03 19:39:31
This is not something you hear mothers admitting to very often.  The current line is "breast is best" and that is definitely backed up by all the research.  However,  I don't see why mothers should be made to feel guilty if breastfeeding does not work out for them.  There are lots of children who are brought up on the bottle who are perfectly healthy. My own personal reasons for disliking breastfeeding include: No one else can feed the baby I feel like a dairy cow expressing milk My baby feeds so often that I am pinned to the sofa for most of the day and night I am unable to spend very much time with my other children I want my body back! My boobs are huge and uncomfortable I have to watch everything I eat and drink and rest regularly (with a family to look after how does anyone manage this?) I will now wait to be shot down in flames!

The Value of a SAHM
2007-05-09 13:47:30
It is easy to feel undervalued as a SAHM, so it makes enjoyable reading to find out that the annual amount a SAHM would earn if she was paid for all the work she does is $138,095! According to Salary.com Inc:The 10 jobs listed as comprising a mother’s work were housekeeper, cook, day care center teacher, laundry machine operator, van driver, facilities manager, janitor, computer operator, chief executive officer and psychologist.

Link Library 8th May 2007
2007-05-09 13:31:16
With a new baby, I have limited time to spend online these days.  It is taking me some time to read through all the blog posts I read via RSS.  A few of my favourite posts include: Are you a Beta Mum? by Work at Home Mom Revolution about being an imperfect mother is music to my ears Top five ways to prevent postpartum depression by Babylune has some good tips and will help new mothers keep everything in perspective at a challenging time. Sun Safety for Kids by Little Mummy is essential reading for the summer.  Also, don't miss her funny post on Socially Recognised Mothering Standards Thanks to Free Stuff 4 Kids for pointing out the free printables for long car journies at Mom's Minivan An suggested on an old post at Parent Hacks: Record your child's voice on your cell phone I must remember to do this.  My kids are changing so fast and it would be great to capture something of them as they are now to carry around with me. Another link I have been keeping hol

Testing for Group B Strep Petition
2007-05-09 12:42:27
Please follow the lead set by India Knight at Isn't She Talking Yet and sign this petition which asks that testing for Group B Strep is made available to every pregnant woman in the UK at 35-37 weeks.  Apparently many of us are carriers without knowing it.  Group B Strep can be passed from mother to child and it affects 700 babies a year, leading to many long term health problems.  Up to 70 babies die each year as a result of Group B Strep.  These deaths could easily be avoided by the mother being given a simple course of antibiotics.

Toddlers and Cleaning
2007-05-09 10:34:56
Source:amazon.co.uk My DS1 had an obsession with vacuum cleaners when he was a toddler and this lasted for at least 18 months.  Everywhere we went he would find the cleaning cupboard and stare longingly at the vacuum cleaner.  He would vacuum at every possible opportunity.  Whilst my husband was concerned for a little while that this was a strange obsession for a little boy, I know that it is actually quite common for toddlers to be interested in vacuum cleaners.  The funniest part of my DS1's obsession was that everyone was convinced that I must be a cleaning freak (which I am definitely not)! Anyway, my DS1's ultimate vacuum cleaner was the Henry model.  So, it amused me when I read in Toyology that you can now buy a mini-Henry for just under £20. I have also heard rave reviews about the Swiffer Carpet Flick Carpet Sweeper Starter Kit (Pack of 2). If DS3 turns out to be a cleaning fanatic too then I will definitely be investing in one.

A Cure for Colic?
2007-05-09 09:59:48
Source: Son of Groucho@flickr DS3 was very colicky the other night.  He had all the typical symptoms of colic: crying non-stop in the evening inconsolable bringing knees up to his tummy in apparent pain not interested in his feed As anyone who has experienced it will know, colic is torture for parents as well as the baby.  In my desperation I tried something that I have never done (even with my other two).  I gave DS3 so-called "sugar-water".  Whilst it is mostly frowned upon, I was at my wit's end and willing to try anything.  To my amazement, DS3 gulped down the sugar-water and instantly calmed down.  Perhaps this was a one off but I was very impressed. If you are interested the sugar-water is made by dissolving half a teaspoon of sugar in 4oz of cooled boiled water. My thinking is that the sugar-water works for several reasons: the baby is soothed by the sucking during feeding the baby is not given further digestive problems by

Routine for a Newborn
2007-05-09 09:44:05
Routines are not for everyone, but they certainly make my day a little easier.  DS3 is now 3 weeks old and I am trying to encourage him into some sort of regular feeding pattern.  Following DS3's lead, he now feeds at approximately 6am, 10am, 2pm, 6pm, 10.30pm, 2.30am.  I don't worry about when DS3 sleeps during the day, but try to make sure he does not sleep too long so that he is drowsy at night.  His longest sleep is after his 6pm feed. Obviously each child is different and whilst this routine is working for me it won't work for others.  Also, I am probably tempting fate by writing this down and he will now be up all night!  Like all new parents I have good days and bad days but I am trying to take it all in my stride.

No 1 Priority: Sleep!
2007-05-14 21:29:27
Looking after my three boys is rather time consuming (as you would expect) so I have not had much of a chance to post recently.  Having just managed to get all three kids to bed (hoorah!) I thought I would do some blogging.  However, I am now so exhausted that I will have to go to bed (even though it is only 8.30pm).  All I think about at the moment is SLEEPING.  It is underated!

An Unfortunate Sign
2007-06-18 02:15:00
I feel sorry for the owners of this shop, who obviously didn’t think that the spacing of the lettering on their sign was important. I doubt that they intended to advertise gender alteration. Still, maybe all the free publicity they will get from blog posts like this one will make up for the mistake.
