Hybrid Alarm Clock
2007-05-19 09:36:00
In addition to the standard buzzing, this “Hybrid Alarm Clock ” can reportedly wake you with “pulsating lights”. No word yet on if this concept will go into production. I can barely wake up with 3 alarm clocks, so something tells me the light show ain’t gonna work

Canada starts using Nintendo Wii consoles in hospitals
2007-05-19 09:34:00
Glenrose Rehabilitation hospital in Canada recently started using Nintendo Wii consoles to help it’s patients with movement or balance issues, and so far, this method has proved to be successful: Don Simoneau, an occupational therapist at the Glenrose, said he has used the technology on only about five patients in the past two and a half months, but already the 200 hospital therapists are clamouring to be involved with the Wii equipment. I think that the hospitals where I live are light years behind such innovation, but it’s nice to see console games helping people get better. And Nintendo gets, yet again, free publicity ;)

Sony announces new Vaio Type-R
2007-05-19 09:32:00
No readers, Sony isn’t introducing yet another type of laptop. The Vaio Type-R is a desktop computer aimed for media professionals with top-range specifications in all aspects and a sleek, although slightly outdated, design. In terms of specifications, this machines will be available with either a Core 2 Duo or a Core 2 Duo Extreme processor, 3GB of RAM and a choice between 4 graphics card, including the relatively new Geforce 8600. The Operative System also matches the rest of the specifications, at least in terms of price. It’s the Windows Vista Ultimate edition. Another interesting aspect about this computer setup is that it comes with a Sony LCD monitor, and I thought they weren’t making them anymore.

Seville’s Incredible Solar Power Tower
2007-05-22 06:39:00
This incredible project consists of a 300-story tall tower, surrounded by 624 solar panels, producing enough energy to “power 60,000 homes.” Video after the jump. Here’s how it works: ..the solar panels, a 120m2 mixture of mirrors and photovoltaics, track the sun throughout the year, reflect the energy of the sun to solar receptor at the top of the tower. Water passes through pipes at the top, and is heated enough to turn it into steam by the solar receptor, which in turn passes through a series of turbines to produce electricity

Dangers of Wi-Fi Should be Reevaluated, Possibly More Harmful Than Previosuly Indicated
2007-05-21 15:26:00
W-Fi could be a lot more dangerous to children’s health than previously thought, says a British health agency. The guy behind the call to arms, Sir William Stewart, points to evidence that shows signal strength from a Wi-Fi router at a distance of one meter is stronger than a cellphone tower’s at a distance of 100 meters. Or, in something I like to call “English,” Wi-Fi signals are a hell of a lot more powerful than cellphone signals and therefore could pose more of a threat. I wonder, if it’s discovered that Wi-Fi is indeed detrimental to one’s health, what would happen? Would the industry just collapse in on itself or is the basic technology modifiable so as to eliminate the danger? And what of those people who are sensitive to electromagnetic waves already, are they screwed either way? I wonder if in a few years’ time, Future People will be all, “Can you believe they willingly subjected themselves to radiation without studying its effects?”

Having trouble waking up herself, Gauri Nanda developed Clocky to shriek annoyingly and effectively, waking you up. The fun doesn’t end there, kiddies. It leaps off of your night stand, and drives around your room, making random turns and racing away from your grasp. Now you have to get out of bed and hunt the little bugger down to turn it off

5 Future Cell Phone Technologies
2007-05-21 07:12:00
Future cell phone technologies could replace computers, PDAs, and even UMPCs — they include the GoForce 5500 graphics chipset, augmented reality, and more. View them all after the break. NVIDIA GoForce 5500 Mobile NVIDIA demonstrated its amazing GoForce 5500 mobile platform at 3GSM, and ShinyShiny was there to give us a first look. This chipset is capable of 3D games and high-definition video playback. Somewhat ironically, NVIDIA seems to have decided to show it all off on the biggest monitor they could get their hands on. Although that may have ultimately been for the best Augmented Reality Tired of the games on your cell phone? Then check out “Arcade Reality”. It’s basically software that uses your phone’s camera to bring ordinary objects such as the ground to life. Aiming your phone at bad guys that appear in the space around you, it kind of combines the active nature of a Wiimote with a light gun like the one that came with the original NES Poppin’ Joys

300 megabits per second wireless router
2007-05-28 12:00:00
Although wireless network protocols are still behind wired ones, and will probably stay that way for a long time, this latest router from NEC, called ATermWR8400N, pushes the limits a bit further and aims to deliver speeds up to 300mbps (in theory). The biggest problem with this router is that the technology it uses is the second draft of the N protocol (IEEE802.11n), which means that it could

Muscle-Numbing Magic Wand
2007-06-01 15:15:00
Ok, so it’s not quite “magic”, butv this wand-like device is still an interesting invention nonetheless. Designed by Fred Pearson, the Stunstick Neuroscrambler delivers a “high-voltage, low-amperage electrical charge that overrides messages from the brain to the muscles, leaving the victim unable to control that part of his body.” But, unlike any other weapon, it can also act like a Taser, the weapon most often used by police. A Taser delivers higher voltages and, by making contact in two points, contracts muscles throughout the body, causing the subject to collapse. That versatility is a boon for cops, who don’t always want to Taser an attacker into submission

The Kohler WaterHaven is a $3,300 showering monstrosity. It features seven water outlets. Yes, seven holes from which it can blow its watery load all over you. The WaterHaven holds two shower heads, four body sprays and one hand shower. Be careful though, accidents happen:
