Mother’s Day
2007-04-08 16:00:48
Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate and thank our mums for everything they have done for us throughout the year.  Whilst there is no denying the day has become commercial in its celebration, this wasn’t always the case. Mothering Sunday began in Britain during the 17th Century on the fourth Sunday of Lent as a day when servants and apprentices would return home to visit with their mothers.  Most visitors took a gift with them; a particular kind of fruitcake called a “mothering cake”.  The holiday had almost completely died out by the 19th Century, when in the United States of America Julia Ward Howe suggested the idea of a Mother’s Day of Peace following the United States’ Civil War.  Whilst celebrations continued for some years, it once again died out when Julia Ward Howe discontinued paying for most of the cost of the celebrations. The Mother’s Day we celebrate today is credited mostly to Anna Jarvis, who wanted a way to honour her mother, who had died.  The first M

ABC For Kids Activity Centre
2007-04-03 16:59:30
Knowing that we had a cold winter to get through, I purchased the ABC For Kids Activity Centre  for the PC and my daughter just loves it.  She was already familiar with the Bananas in Pyjamas and the Hooly Doolies and was very happy to see them make an appearance on the CD. The CD Rom features songs from Play School which she happily sings along with and I was happy to see a wide variety of songs featured - some old favourites and others not so familiar to her.  Whilst she is admittedly too young to do some of the activities (the recommended age is 3+) - she is only too happy to sit and watch mummy do it for her. Once she learns to grasp the concept of a mouse then I have no doubt that she will get even more pleasure from learning to do the activities herself.

That’s Charming!
2007-04-03 06:29:20
I had a charm bracelet as a young girl and I thought it was one of the loveliest gifts I had ever received.  I especially enjoyed keeping an eye out for special charms that I could add to my bracelet. Charm bracelets have been around for many centuries and seem to fade in and out of the fashion scene.  Their popularity soared in the 1950s but seemed to fade by the 70s and reemerged again in the 80s.  But they are back in vogue once again and charms are not only popular on bracelets but are also seen on necklaces and earrings.  Charm bracelets are perfect keepsake gifts and if given to a young child, the charms can be added to and exchanged as they grow. Oh My Giddy Aunt stock a wide selection of gold and silver charms as well as bracelets, bangles and necklace chains.  Their Charmed By Collection features ready made bracelets which feature 5 sterling silver charms attached to a sterling silver bracelet in a variety of themes including Nursery Rhymes, the Arts, Childhood, Love and

Item Exchanges or Refunds
2007-04-02 06:02:13
Many people are hesitant about shopping online particularly when it comes to exchanging or returning items.  But the refund or exchange of the item in reality is no more difficult to that of placing the initial order. The process may differ from company to company, but you will find that the majority of online retailers are only too happy to offer a refund or exchange.  The store may send a returns form in the original package in the event that you have ordered an incorrect size, colour or simply just had a change of heart.  If there is no form with your delivery then it is just a case of visiting the website in question.  There you may either need to download a Returns Form, read their returns policy for information or email the company for further advice. If the item you received was damaged in transit or the wrong product was sent, then a full refund or replacement item will usually be issued.  You will of course need to send back the item you originally purchased but in most s

Sahara Stripes LST
2007-04-01 03:01:44
Our shopping team recently purchased from the fINNIGAN fINN kids range and we must admit that we have fallen in love with their Sahara Stripes LST.  Red, not only makes a refreshing change from all the pink clothing available for girls but the asymmetrical sectioned sleeves gives it a funky edge. The service received from Finnigan Finn was fantastic and we even received a free pair of tights with the order.  Finnigan Finn is a proudly owned and operated Australian company creating stylish clothes for children aged between 2 and 7.

Creative or Contrary?
2007-03-28 19:06:37
My walls are a mess!  A strange comment you may think but then again if only you knew my daughter…. She loves drawing and painting, singing and dancing - in fact she is quite creative in all these aspects.  But none more creative than with a crayon in hand pointed directly at the wall.  Regardless of how much paper I lay on the floor or how closely I supervise her, she always manages to tuck a crayon away for later when “mummy” is not looking. In fact it was only yesterday that I noticed a fresh batch of artistic scribblings had been added to what was a previously a white wall.  A lovely shade of red or was it cerise? So I am now thinking that maybe chalk might be the way to go.  WallCandy Arts Chalkboards can be mounted directly on the wall and are perfect for my situation.  I am hoping that reverse psychology will come into play and once my daughter gets sick of doodling on the wall then maybe she will head back to her long neglected Bananas In Pyjamas

Can Renting DVDs Get Any Easier?
2007-03-27 16:00:44
There was a time when you had to rush down to the DVD store before it closed and then rush back again with the rentals the next day otherwise you would incur a late fee.  DVD stores then introduced two and three day rentals followed by flexible plans to suit your budget and schedule. But with the introduction of DVD rentals delivered to your door - it really doesn’t get any easier.  Quickflix is an independent online DVD rental service that offers this convenient door to door service.  There are no late fees, no deadlines and the return postage is already paid for. For a movie buff like me it’s the perfect way to rent DVDs.  Cinema prices just seem so expensive in comparison and downloading unlicensed copies is illegal.  With Quickflix’s DVD plans you can rent as many DVDs in a month as you want (as long as you have no more than the designated number out at any one time). Quickflix is now offering a FREE 14 day trial of up to 5 DVDs with no furthe

Popular Pendants
2007-03-27 05:04:14
If you follow fashion trends at all, you may know that pendants are playing a major part in the current jewellery trends.  Pendants in all styles are popular especially pieces featuring curves and circular motifs. The Mother of Pearl Pendant from Beauty Banquet is just perfect for this season.  Whilst strong colours seem to be the main feature, secondary colours such as pinks and plums are also popular. According to oriental traditions, Mother of Pearl is also a very symbolic stone.  Not only does it attract wealth but it also symbolizes prosperity and good luck.  Need I say more! Anne Maybus, owner of Beauty Banquet has also created a blog entitled The Tall Poppy.  She covers a huge range of topics with the aim of encouraging women to take a risk and live a little.

Calling All Crafters
2007-04-10 16:00:04
Have you noticed the amount of scrapbooking and craft products which seem to be appearing in many stores of late? Scrapbooking is becoming very popular both in terms of paper and digital scrapbooking and many retailers are jumping on board to be able to cater to this growing market. Craft Products Australia is one such store which stocks almost everything a crafter may need.  From beads to embellishments, stickers to stamps - this superstore carries a wide range of products with a very reasonable $5.95 delivery charge within Australia. And if you are lacking creativity once you have made your purchases then head over to All Thing Scrapbooking.  Not only are they able to answer any crafting questions you may throw at them, they also run a variety of challenges in order to keep those creative juices flowing.

Finding Your Scent
2007-04-10 02:50:25
Shopping for perfume can be overwhelming particularly when you have no idea what you are going to buy.  I like to change my perfumes from time to time and I have a variety of scents to suit my mood - a lighter floral scent for daytime and a stronger oriental scent for the evening. This is where the services that perfume stores offer come in handy.  If you give them a name of a perfume you like, then they are able to suggest something similar to narrow down your perfume search. The Perfume Connection offers a similar service online. If you like:                                                  Try: Chanel #5 by Chanel                                 Maitresse by Agent Provocateur Paris by Yves Saint Laurent                       360° Black For Women by Perry Ellis 5th Avenue after 5 by Elizabeth Arden     Burberry For Women by Burberry This will narrow down your chance

Charlotte’s Web
2007-04-12 03:32:06
It was only a matter of time before Charlotte ’s Web was captured on the big screen owing to the fact the original novel was published in 1952 and the animated film released 21 years later. As a child I loved the story of Fern and Wilbur and watching the movie recently with my daughter, I realise that the story has not lost any of its charm. Filmed in and around Melbourne, Dakota Fanning stars as Fern in the movie of the same name which brings the classic book to life. It just goes to show that the importance of friendship and trust is a timeless subject which makes this a story to be enjoyed from generation to generation.

Return of the Cabbage Patch Dolls
2007-04-16 16:00:52
Cabbage Patch Dolls were a big craze in the 80s and many young girls (and even collectors) wanted a doll that was unique which they could adopt and take home with them.  And as with most things it seems, the creators saw an opportunity to remarket their dolls for a new generation creating a whole new set of adoring fans. The dolls come complete with birth certificate and adoption papers so look out for the stork in your neighbourhood.

Whatever Happened to Mary Janes?
2007-04-18 17:04:56
Mary Jane shoes are an amazingly popular style particularly in the winter months.  They can be worn casual or dressed up and are convenient to slip on and off.  I have seen Mary Janes be worn by all ages and now baby can get into the act too!  These Baby Jane socks are adorable for a young baby and are suitable for 0-12 months.  They are available in a set of six and come presented in a box making them an ideal gift. Once again the popularity of the Mary Janes continues and it just goes to show it is never too early too become a fashionista.

Moisture Up!
2007-04-18 07:54:35
I find flying really takes it out on my skin particularly those long international flights. For this reason, I never wear makeup when flying and I am always armed with products to help moisturise and rehydrate my skin. I always pack a hydrating moisturiser, facial spray and a lip gloss in my hand luggage in preparation for the journey. And if I don’t have them prior to arriving at the airport then Duty Free shopping means that I can always pick up the quality products even cheaper. My favourite moisture intensive products are from Clinique’s Moisture Surge range. The Moisture Surge Extra Thirsty Skin Relief has been a favourite of mine for many years and I never leave home without it. But if you prefer a face spray or gel, then the moisture surge products are also available in these forms. You may not have access to all the creature comforts on the plane when travelling, but carrying products like this onboard will mean that you will arrive at your destination feelin

Yoga For Kids
2007-04-22 15:01:32
I am a big fan of yoga and never do I feel as good physically until I have completed a yoga workout. It is an activity that everyone of all ages can participate in and it definitely benefits both old and young.  Children will find they have a natural affinity with yoga as their bodies are usually more flexible - much more so than their poor old parents! Yoga will enhance their flexibility, coordination and strength as well as aid their concentration and help them relax. With all the problems and stress facing our children these days, it seems like the benefits of yoga are almost too strong to ignore. Kinda Yoga introduces yoga to young kids in a fun and interactive way and seems like an ideal way to introduce the art of yoga into their lives. Even children who are not naturally active will find that yoga will be helpful to them. If you are not ready to try them with a dvd then you may find a book may be more helpful to you. Yoga For Kids features full colour photographs and ill

Shopping Blogs
2007-04-27 16:00:52
Anne from The Tall Poppy presented me with a challenge - to name my 5 top favourite blogs.  That really is quite difficult as I am an avid blog reader so I have selected 5 of my favourite Australian fashion and shopping blogs to read. Being Green
2007-04-25 15:01:22
Kermit the Frog definitely had the right attitude. He struggled with the difficulty of being green but after a while he decided that it was “cool and friendly-like”. And I think many people feel this way. At first purchasing eco-friendly products and tackling tasks such as recycling, means you have to make a special effort, but once you know what to do or where to look, then no real special effort is required. One of the biggest risk factors to our environment, despite the growing awareness of the situation, are plastic bags. Not only do they clog our waterways but they also injure and kill our wildlife and marine life. Clean Up Australia estimates that Australians use 3.92 billion plastic bags per year with an estimated 50 million of those ending up as litter on the streets and in the water. In 2006, they prompted a campaign calling on all Australians to say no to the use of plastic bags. Many supermarkets and retailers now offer the option to use reusable bags in additi

For The Love of…Cleaning
2007-04-24 15:11:31
I was browsing Diva Days and noticed that Anne Maybus had asked a question of her readers on what they would do if they had more time. A huge list sprang immediately to mind followed by one very specific thought on what I would definitely not do! Cleaning ! I definitely missed out on the cleaning gene - it is just something that I can always find to put off until another day. So Speed Cleaning is definitely something that I could learn to do especially when I am guaranteed a spotless house in just 15 minutes a day. So if anyone is listening, you can most definitely add this title to my Christmas wish list!
