Known for her husky voice and
sultry looks, Lauren Bacall (pictured left) became a fashion icon and role
model for women in the late 1940s. Today she is considered a legendary
actress best known as the leading lady in films such as “The Big Sleep” (1946) and “Dark Passage” (1947).

Love is in the air… 2007-08-29 08:01:51 Spring to many means romance and love and reading Danni’s recent Romantic Proposal post, it made me think how important these little gestures are.
Regardless of how long you have been in a relationship it is nice to do something romantic or out of the ordinary for your partner, particularly when it is unexpected. Whilst buying something for Valentine’s Day is good, picking up something special on an ordinary day is even more memorable.

Grapevine Soaps 2007-09-03 08:01:08 I love the smell of beautifully scented soap and am guilty of having a number of scents available in my bathroom at any one time. Strawberry soap is one of my all time favourites as is the delicious, warm scent of vanilla.
As I was reading The Tall Poppy, I noticed that Funky Soaps
have recently acquired the Grapevine Soaps from A Piece of Art as part of their range. I am a big fan of these having purchased these in the past and the stylish wrapping makes it both suitable for men and women.
Team the soap with a matching bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz and you will have a stylish gift.
Pores 2007-09-02 15:43:23 I came across an article in the September issue of Elle magazine that cast its spotlight on pores. Author, Nicole Catanese begins by helping us understand the true meaning of pores, “you need to fuse the word’s two definitions: ‘a minute opening’ and ‘to study attentively.’ That is to say, tiny holes with which people are obsessed.” How true that is! I’m sure we’ve all stared into the mirror and marvelled at how enormous our pores were. And here’s the bad news - as we get older, our pores get even bigger.
Dead skin cells can help clog our pores and since empty pores are less visible than clogged ones, Nicole reminds us to protect our skin (especially from UV Rays), keep our pores clean and exfoliate. Biore Pore Perfect Unclogging Pore Scrub, Estee Lauder Idealist Pore Minimizing Refresher and Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) are a few of the recommendations given by the article to help us minimize the size of our por

The Giving Gift 2007-09-26 08:01:11 Some people really are difficult to buy for and it doesn’t make it any easier when the people in question say they don’t need anything in particular. Well a great gift idea for those who have everything is to give them a gift which is sent to someone else in need. How does this work you may ask?
For $47 you can buy a lamb for a family in countries like Mongolia and Somalia or for $78 you can buy a pig for a family in Cambodia, Uganda, East Timor or Myanmar.
The recipient you buy the gift for will receive a card showing the gift being given in their name, and what gift was given to a family in need.
Other gifts from the World Vision Smiles range include school supplies and food for families in need. Read more:Giving

Dieting Tips and Strategies 2007-09-25 04:49:20 I, like many people, are guilty of adding a few kilos to my frame during winter due to lethargy and a change of eating patterns. So when the sun comes it then I look to combat those kilos fast before they have any chance of sticking around.
But if you are looking to take on a diet - the number of them available to try and the different information they provide can truly be mind boggling. The titles may range from Eat Right 4 Your Type, the The Low GI Diet or the The Total Wellbeing Diet to name a few but where do you start?
I am a big believer in everything in moderation and if I want that chocolate today then I will have it. It may mean that I say no to something else later on in the day but the urge may not be as all consuming as it is to eat the chocolate right now.
Admittedly I don’t have much willpower so the trick for me is just not to buy it. If it is not in the cupboard then I can’t eat it and if I find that the craving is still as strong in an hour’ Read more:Dieting

Book Bags 2007-09-19 08:01:30 I am used to carrying my books around in my handbag and never really thought about protecting them particularly. That is not until a colleague of mine showed me the pretty satin book bags from The Dharma Door.
My favourite book bags is the Norzin Steel bag as I just love the light pink flowers contrasting against the steel background.
Fabric book wraps have been used for centuries in Tibet to keep sacred, unbound texts protected from the elements. Now you have the opportunity to protect your special books in a similar fashion. The bags are handcrafted by Tibetan refugees living in Northern India and The Dharma Door to their credit, supports this workshop by ensuring the craftspeople are paid fair wages and enjoy positive working conditions.
The silk bags are available in two sizes and over 10 designs and retail from $25.
Cover Up 2007-09-18 08:01:43 Sometimes getting kids to wear hats can be near on impossible unless they are adorned with their favourite character. My daughter wears her Dora hat proudly now as she runs around thinking about how cool she must be with the little explorer on her head.
One of my all time favourite Australian made brands is Vintage Kids. Their range is just stunning and they handpick their fabrics accordingly to suit the product. Their designs come under my favourite category - one that kids will also want to wear.
The China Doll hat is just stunning as is the new range of Ruby Rosebud hats. Read more:Cover
I Like To Sing 2007-10-01 08:01:05 Well if you missed Justine Clarke doing her recent tour to a town near you, then you can always pick up the cd from ABC shops.
I Like To Sing is a joyful collection of cool songs for kids. With its cheeky lyrics and richly layered arrangements, its beautiful melodies and foot-tapping rhythms, the CD is an irresistible introduction to the pleasures of songs and singing.
My daughter at 2 and a half knows the words to every song on the cd. And whilst Justine may not be the best singer in the world (and neither admittedly am I) - we love to sing along just the same. Who in their right mind can fault a cd which teaches children to love watermelon and pineapple!

Soap For Children 2007-10-14 08:01:09 As I was browsing My Day Off, I noticed that a new range of soaps were available on Funky Soaps which catered directly to children. Now don’t let the name fool you. “Funky” may mean having a strong offensive odour but it also means characterised by originality which is certainly encompasses the range of soaps which are sold on their site. In fact this clever play on words is what keeps this store firm in my memory.
Getting my daughter to use soap at the best of times can be difficult but I know she wouldn’t have any problems when it came to using the crayon soaps featured on their site.
They retail for $6.95 and would make a great addition to any Christmas stocking. Read more:Children

Earrings Fit For Spring 2007-10-10 08:01:31 You know it’s spring when you see earrings like this available to purchase online.
These earrings from Annette Piper are springtime personified with the bright green cloissonne earrings and 12ct gold fill earhooks.
What I love about Annette Piper’s designs is that you get a real sense that she loves what she is doing. And if you don’t believe me, then check out her blog as she herself admits that she gets genuine happiness from the design and creation process.
And I must admit I love the “Erigenia” pearl and silver earrings available on her site for purchase. The Lark Designs Vintage Fabric Hair Clip from Lark Designs is one such product. “It is just a hair clip” you might say but add a stunning fabric and a vintage 1950s playing card and you have a gift that is not only created using recycled materials but a fantastic little stocking filler as well.

Make Some You Time 2007-10-08 08:01:15 Finding time for ourselves is often difficult and trying to fit in a facial amongst the other jobs on our to-do lists and our budgets is just sometimes downright impossible.
If this is you then you might want to make an investment in a good quality product which can be used again and again which allows yourself some “you” time. Only pull out the product when you have time alone to really indulge and pamper yourself.
One such products is the gorgeous sounding Honey Comfort Mask from L’Occitane. Leave on for 5 or 10 minutes to help rebalance skin’s surface. Or if you feel like a more intensive clean, try Bloom’s Clean With Envy Green Face Mask. And on the days when you feel your face is cheating you of your rightful age then the Clarins Extra-Firming Facial Mask
will gently firm, refine and tighten the skin’s surface so you feel like your old (young) self.
Skin Care Basics 2007-10-08 03:33:48 Let’s face it - in this world of equality, skin care is not just for the girls. Men also take pride in what they wear and their appearance which totally works for me. I much prefer a man who regularly gets their haircut and moisturises occasionally to one who forgoes the whole beauty regime unless nagged.
Clarins has created a range of products just for the men. Check out their Active Face Wash Foaming Gel (RRP $34) and Moisture Balm (RRP $49) for two classic products from the range.
If you are unsure what your man (or yourself) may prefer from the range then the Must-Haves Gift Set which contains Active Foaming Face Wash, Moisture Gel, Active Face Scrub and Total Shampoo might just be the way to go.

Accessorise 2007-10-03 08:01:42 Now that the Spring Carnival is fast approaching - all eyes are on fashion and accessories. Whilst I am not a huge hat fan I must admit that I do love accessories.
Some great buys I recently noticed on the Witchery site include:
If you can’t afford jewels on your fingers or your toes then try adding one to your hair. These Hair Bobbles retail for a very affordable $7.95 and are available in three designs.
Another one of my favourite accessories at the moment is the headband for a nice easy do.
I am not particularly a fan of big bulky headbands but this stylish little diamante headband should stand you in good stead.
It is available in the tortoise design as pictured and retails for $29.95. This glamourous little number should carry you through any bad hair day and gain you some compliments in return.
Lazy Days 2007-10-03 06:14:35 I love lazing around in my pyjamas on winter mornings but as the warmer weather is approaching then I tend to swap my bedroom attire for something more suitable.
For the last few years my favourite nighties are those from Peter Alexander and this year it looks to be no different. Their Cherry Pie Slinkie Nightie is very femine without being too cutesy. They are very easy to slip on, comfortable to wear and very forgiving!
And if you so desire, Peter Alexander also sells matching cherry slippers to boot!
