Apocalypto: A Review 2006-12-17 22:06:02 Leslie, Jon, Craig, and I went to see the new Mel Gibson film Apocalypto.
I don’t judge a film just because the person that half-wrote it and directed it is insane. I truly think most directors are at least partly insane and have some kind of substance abuse. So give Mel a break he has dealt with accusations of homophobia, anglophobia, and anti-Semitism, oh and alcoholism, but still.
On to the review - This film had some quite good aspects. The use of the native tongue for the Mayans was well done, the actors were picked quite well, the scenery and over-arching concept was a nice thought (i.e. the last scene put in place by the building story), but Mr. Gibson needs to come to terms with something. . . he is addicted to gore, and not just gore, suffering.
Gibson, who has already killed Jesus on film and shot every aspect of his bloody body doesn’t have many more places to go. . . unless he reaches deep into Mayan culture and remembers the days when Itzamna demanded blood t
Book Grab! 2006-12-18 04:19:34 I have an old school ‘up for grabs’ on four books right now.
Soul Craving by Erwin McManus
Seizing your Divine Moment by Erwin McManus
The Island of Marna by Jamey Heit
Halley’s Bible Handbook by Halley.
Here’s the deal. First person to say dibs on the comment section officially has dibs, but I do need about $2.50 per book to send them. No profit here, just enough to cover mailing them and something to mail them in. I’ll eat the cost over 2.50. So, call dibs, then throw about 2.50 in my paypal account and I’ll ship them off. Buy a CD and I’ll ship it for free. (nfiedler_paypal@mac.com is my email for paypal).
I will probably have some more books up shortly. My goal is to pass around everything I have read and let other people read it for cheap. I don’t need a collection of books to make me feel good about myself and I seldom reread anything so if you want them they are yours.
The Nick and Josh Podcast 2006-12-19 01:58:09 If you listen to the podcast, will you please rate it on the sidebar to the right. I think it’s excellent. Don’t you?
Thanks to Leslie from Leslie Treece Photography for the freakin-a picture of me in the header. Like it? Check out more of her stuff and book her for your wedding.

FOTD - Fact of the Day 2006-12-19 16:34:08 The practice of naming hurricanes began early this century when an Australian weather forecaster decided to insult politicians he didn’t like by naming devastating tropical storms after them.
Calvinism=Old Mum-bo. . . without the Jum-bo 2006-12-23 03:52:45 This is another picture to represent Calvinism. If you haven’t heard of Calvinism before it is represented by a flower. . the TULIP. Each letter of this beautiful flower means something. I may get these wrong cause it’s been a while, but the ‘T’ stands for Total Depravity - that means that because the first two humans ate fruit we are all completely evil because evil is sexually transmitted. The ‘U’ stands for Unconditional Election, this means if Jesus wants you in heaven you have to be there with him, but if he doesn’t you’re out and he made these decisions before time itself began. The “L” stands for Limited Atonement. That means that Jesus didn’t die for you unless you were elected. Cause really why shed blood for the whole world if you only want to save half of it. That is just a waste. The ‘I’ is for Irresistable Grace. I think that means you can’t resist the grace of God. Lastly the ‘P̵
Must-have Mac Software: Gdisk 2006-12-24 20:02:07 I just found this little program called Gdisk. It turns all that free space you have in gmail into usable internet storage. Pretty indredible I think. It is about time my gmail account started doing something useful.
Also as part of the large Nick Fiedler book swapping project I have copies of: The Island of Marna, Velvet Elvis, The Barbarian Way, and The Bible Handbook to pass around if anyone needs copies. Just drop about 2.50 into the old paypal and I’ll send them your way.

I Nick Fiedler, am a Calvinist. 2006-12-24 18:51:13 Okay it took a while to come around to, but the “T” got me yesterday. I now believe that all men are depraved. Why, you ask. Because the truthiness of the idea shown bright yesterday when I walked to my car.
Men you are deprave. You fell from your creation and are nothing. I moved to a place in the city of Birmingham where I thought there were no depraved people. I didn’t move to the Southside where I would feel unsafe I moved to the predominately Jewish part of town. . . and yet, depravity is everywhere. Not just in the places you are scared to walk around by yourself.
I apologize for the harsh words I dished out to JC.
Hmm. . 2006-12-27 00:26:34 I don’t know how I feel about this.
I guess my first thought is 1)Is it ethical to hire fighters and offer them citizenship? and 2)Should we first give the chance to the illegals already inside the borders that the newer laws are cracking down on before we set up recruiting centers outside the country?
I just don’t know.
Gerald Ford, please don't fall down that stairway to heaven. 2006-12-27 16:13:00 Okay so I really don’t know much about President Gerald
Ford except that he took the Presidency after Nixon and pardoned Nixon and that pissed people off. Then he was almost killed by a follower of Charles Manson named Squeaky. I think someone else tried to shoot him too.
Oh this is the only other thing I know about him. Does anyone know where I can get a video of the numerous falls?
But in all seriousness. I hear that he hated how America had become a Red and Blue divide in the last few years. If that is the only thing I know about him, I like him, because America sucks when we hate eachother. I don’t know how not to hate Red, I mean Blue sucks. . . but come on red. . . but I’m working on it. I have met some really swell Reds.

3.2 Nick and Josh Podcast, The Island of Marna with Jamey Heit 2006-12-30 20:32:08
This week we have a year end edition to The Nick and Josh Podcast
. We sit down and talk about what is going on in our lives, Josh talks about his new 360, we banter about accountability groups, and then we talk with Jamey Heit about his book The Island
of Marna. We also announce our plans to attend Soularize ‘07. Enjoy it, and as always please leave comments at our Facebook Group or on the Myspace page. Also be sure to rate us on my sidebar to the right.
Resolutions/Plans for 2007 2006-12-31 14:24:49 2006 has been awesome. I can’t think of everything that has happened, but a lot has happened. I got married to the most beautiful woman in the world. I traveled to Europe for my honeymoon. I traveled to Honduras as a hired musician with my wife. Leslie and I met new best friends Josh and Anna. I went to Yale with Josh and took pictures outside the Skull and Bones house. I started a podcast with Josh that now has 52k subscribers. I had the chance to interview amazing authors, musicians, speakers, and pastors. I got my first real job at Wells Fargo. I got fired from a church and started adapting healthier belief structures and healthier work habits. I attended Bonnaroo as well as about 20 other concerts throughout the year. I read more books in 2006 than I have in any previous year and perhaps more than all previous years combined. I moved into an apartment in a part of town that is awesome. I started saving habits that will make Leslie and I rich. . . etc.
All of this made an incr Read more:Resolutions
Thoughts on Saddam Hussein and Death 2007-01-02 01:02:26 Last night while we were ringing in the New Year with our new friends Josh Case and his wife Laura, Josh and I stepped aside to see if we could find news/video of the lastest on Saddam
.
Josh had told me that someone had a video in the room when Saddam was killed and he taped the whole thing. The mentioned tape had apparently made it to Youtube, so after the night had picked up and the ladies were cooking we sat down to find the video. I don’t know why, probably curiosity mixed with the idea that it was hard to believe the events of the past week. The Godfather of Soul, A former President, and now a famous Dictator all died in a weeks time. This, on top of the fact that Josh and Laura had just arrived here after attending a funeral of a close person in Josh’s life.
All of this piled up and I guess we were just thinking about death. So we watched Saddam’s life end.
When I was in 4th grade I remember rumors about Saddam, the rumor that I remember most was that his hea Read more:Hussein

NYE 2007-01-02 23:53:13 This New Years Eve made it into the top five NYE nights of my life. It actually falls at #3. Which says a lot because New Years rocks, and I have had some really awesome New Years-es. Let me run down the first two to put this one into perspective.
The second best New Years Eve was a couple years ago up in Washington DC with Leslie’s friend Bridget, her family, and her boyfriend. We flew up to DC, saw the monuments, shopped in the trendy downtown spots, stayed with Bridget’s family, met Bridget’s dad who is really high up in NASA and one bamf kind of guy, we also got a story written up about us in the newspaper, then we went out on the town to ring in the New Year on the streets of Washington DC.
The best New Years Eve was in 1999, when I saw Phish play a NYE show at the turn of the millenium and they played music for eight hours straight at a three day festival. It was the most musically incredible night of my life and the best New Years ever.
So you can see that I

2. The Fountain
3. Little Miss Sunshine
4. Borat
5. V for Vendetta
(Those being listed, I should also say I haven’t seen Bable or The Departed nor have I been to the theatre a lot in 2006)

Apple, iPhone, and why I love Steve Jobs 2007-01-11 18:12:16 Apple
continues to produce creative, innovative, and stunning products. They typify the new “creative-class” generation and that’s why I love them and will continue to be an Apple user for the rest of my life.
On a different note, I am not planning on changing to Cingular or spending $500 (1/8th of a Vespa) on a phone, but Apple is out there and doing it, and I respect that.

The Lost Apostle: A Review 2007-01-14 19:45:19 Today I finished a book that I have had for a couple weeks now called The Lost Apostle. I picked it out of a parcel of books my good friend Ingrid sent to me as I was looking for authors for the podcast. Ingrid actually set us up with Spencer Burke and the rest was magical history.
The Lost Apostle by Rena Pederson was a nice book. It contained information about historical Christianity and it’s early years, something that I am fond of reading about, especially because churches usually don’t give adequate discriptions of the early Christian faith. [I say adequate using the term comparatively to the ammount of scholarly information that is available about the early years of the church, of course I can’t validate this claim too much because I haven’t been to church in a while].
Pederson’s story tries to dig up an early Apostle who has undergone various sex changes. Her story is of the female Apostle Junia. Whose name has been changed many times throughout m
In Memory of Betty King 2007-01-15 17:10:31 A few weeks ago I wrote about a great NPR story that used a quote by Betty
King. Somehow a member of Betty Kings family told me they found the site and sadly she had past away. In memory of Betty King here is some information her family sent me about her extrodinary life and work. [Here is the post.]
Betty S. King joined the CLD Department as Extension specialist in July 2002. She began her extension career as an area specialist with the University of Missouri and served as an extension agent in Kentucky and came to the U.K. campus in l995 as coordinator for the Kentucky Leadership in Agricultural and Environmental Project (K.L.A.E.S), a Kellogg-funded project in the Department of Agricultural Economics.
She holds a B.S. from Berea College and a M.S. from the University of Kentucky and from the University of Nebraska. She earned her doctorate in Community and Human Resources from the University of Nebraska.
In the fall of 2007, Dr. King will be teaching a graduate seminar, CLD 775 C Read more:Memory
