In our opinion, the FDA has made a step in the right direction to ensure manufacturers of dietary supplements are using quality ingredients accurately reflected on the label. The new regulation calls for manufacturers to evaluate the identity, purity, strength and composition of their products and gives the FDA the authority to declare nonconforming supplements as adulterated or misbranded, the agency said. “The aim of the final rule is to prevent inclusion of the wrong ingredients, too much or too little of a dietary ingredient, contamination by substances such as natural toxins, bacteria, pesticides, glass, lead and other heavy metals, as well as improper packaging and labeling,” the FDA said. The agency is phasing in the new rule requiring supplement makers to test the purity and composition of their products. The technique seems to allow psychiatrists to disrupt the biochemical pathways that allow a memory to be recalled. In a new study, published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, the drug propranolol is used along with therapy to "dampen" memories of trauma victims. They treated 19 accident or rape victims for ten days, during which the patients were asked to describe their memories of the traumatic event that had happened 10 years earlier. A group of scientists at Washington University in Saint Louis believe they have a lead on how to stop apoptosis (unwanted cell suicide) and thus minimize the tissue damage that occurs as a result of these injuries. They designed drugs that halt the actions of executioner caspases, proteins that act as a molecular wrecking crew. Other scientists had found that a chemical called isatin could prevent tissue damage in rabbit hearts that were deprived of oxygen.
