International Recruiment Technology Help 2006-10-21 16:52:47 After having popped over to "The Scoble Show" earlier, I noticed a product called Jajah which was initially promoted by Guy Kawasaki, whom I have on my blog role. Who incidentally has an interest in recruitment, I am pleased to say.
At the time when Guy pitched Jajah it didn’t really turn me on, as I was more than happy with Skype. I have a soft spot for Skype for many reasons, more importantly it gave me the freedom to work from home and remotely in Spain, who could want more!
One of the great things about Blogs you get to know who are the people to trust, which makes me think of Exceler8ion’s post "We Come As We Are" So if Guy believed in the product and so did Richard, then I am sure it’s fine. Mind you the video helped, seeing the whites of the eyes of the CEO and the product in action, what more did I need.
To be honest I am sure it was just circumstances rather than whether Richard did a better sales job than Guy, as I had a genuine need. To Read more:International

Candidate follow up or how's Robert Scoble doing? 2006-10-19 17:59:37 I have been meaning to write this entry for a few weeks now, but finding the time is so hard, I don’t now how some of you Blogger’s keep the pace up, Jim Stroud comes to mind here. Anyway with my poor excuse out of the way I will continue.
I was very keen to write a follow up on an entry I made a while back entitled RobertScoble
s’s Resignation Letter!! Kindly Robert responded and commented on the post and as a good recruitment consultant, I thought I would see how he is doing
at Podtech. Well not surprisingly I found Robert had taken over with his very own show, The Scoble Show and if you have time I suggest you take a look.
Basically it is a video blog, I believe you would call it a Vlog, where Robert is commenting on all manner of things with an emphasis on technology. The quality of the videos are extremely good and the content to, with some unique insights into some of the companies he has been to visit. More importantly you certainly feel that Robert has made t Read more:Candidate

McDonalds Job Application 2006-10-17 12:21:56 This job application from Mc Donalds was sent to me by Cathy from Aspirations recruitment solutions. I could be wrong but I believe this job application goes back to 1999. I have to admit I had not seen it before, so incase I am not the only one, I thought I would re publish it here
I also heard that Greg was recruited because he was honest and funny, I wonder where he is now or was it all just a ruse!

Well Jim Stroud is at it again! 2006-10-16 23:07:29 Well Jim Stroud is at it again, pushing the boundaries of the blogosphere with his new website The Day In Recruiting. To be honest he doesn’t really need to go any further than his podcast’s on The Recruiters Lounge but who I am to argue.
So whatever the case I thought I would take a look and see what Jim has put together. Having now had time to reflect I can honestly say, I like it and it works well with Jim’s other offerings. Probably the best way to describe it is it is like a cross between Recruitng.com and a blogroll.
Why it works for me is that it shows off all the recruiting blogs on one page, with the key being that the latest posts are also included giving you more of a feel of the blog than just a name on a blogroll. Saying that it really amazed me the amount and diversity of recruiting blogs out there, with a few fellow UK bloggers in the mix, I am pleased to say.
To finish I am very attached to my feed reader www.netvibes.com but Jim you have excelled you
Online Testing 2006-10-10 19:39:30 Yesterday I was using Zoho Writer which is a free online word processing tool. They are an interesting company who have developed a number of web based office tools, including Zoho Sheet an Excell type product, a Power Point look alike called Zoho Show plus other various tools in development.
As you may know I am a bit of a sucker for online systems, which these are and I recently wrote an article in regards to box.net a free online storage provider. I will not go into that here but what may appeal to you fellow recruiters is a new tool in Beta, which I spotted just by accident called Zoho Challenge, it is an online testing tool that you can send out to potential candidates prior to interview. Its is free up to 25 candidates after which there is a cost, still one cannot complain as most of their tools are free.
I have had a bit of a play with the system and it is quite easy to use, it isn’t something that I have needed but for some HR Managers or Recruiters it may be of use.

Using Google Adwords to find Candidates 2006-10-09 18:19:11 Last week I was contacted via GoogleAdwords
in regards to comments I made on ERE, about using Adwords as an alternative to job boards to find candidates. So as to preempt Google’s questions, I thought I would re look at my campaign and fill you in on how it all worked out.
The funny thing was it was just a trial to see if it would work, partly because my normal route via the Job Boards wasn’t working. What did amaze me was not only did it work but how quickly it produced suitable candidates.
Probably first I should explain how Adwords works to help you grasp the concept. Google as I am sure you are aware make’s its money from advertising, by clients paying for links that appear on the right hand side of each search, or they appear on various websites like mine. (If you look to the right of this post, below the title Ads by Goooooogle you should be able to see them). Now what is clever, is those ads should be relevant to the website or the article such as recruitment Read more:Candidates
Monty Python Silly Job Interview 2006-09-29 16:19:24 I cannot believe it is Friday again, I just have no idea where the week goes at times! Still as it is Friday I thought I would scour the Internet for something amusing that relates to recruitment, well at least in some way.
Finally after watching a fair amount of rubbish, I managed to find some classic MontyPython
. Unfortunately it isn’t the Dead Parrot Sketch but a sketch for a Job Interview.
Enjoy and have a great weekend

Recruitment and Social networking as seen by Jason Goldberg 2006-09-27 18:38:58 Well I finally found time to watch the video of CEO JasonGoldberg
, who gave a keynote address at ERExpo in Hollywood just over a week ago.
The presentation is quite long just over 40 minutes, but is certainly worth taking time out to watch if you want to get an angle on web 2.0. What I particularly got out of his presentation apart from his passion for Jobster and social networking
, was the way he explained how the web has changed and how blogs, social networks, Myspace, tags etc affect us within recruitment, I do not think it could have been explained better.
The second half of the presentation is Jason’s pitch for Jobster, which if it is something you are considering then this will probably be best pitch you will ever get. For me it really helped me get an angle on what Jobster is all about and how to really find those high quality candidates you are looking for.
Having now reflected on what Jason said it finally hit home, talented people know talented people and experts mi Read more:Recruitment

Ricky Gervais Job Appraisal Interview 2006-09-22 12:36:30 As it is Friday I cant help feel it is a good excuse to post something less serious, so if you haven’t seen it before this is the second part of the RickyGervais
video for Microsoft with an internal or Job Appraisal
interview.
It is done in Ricky’s unique style, if you haven’t seen the first installment you can see it here.

Is This the Future of Interviewing 2006-10-23 23:07:17 What I love about technology and communications is how for me it seems dedicated to the recruitment industry. Since I started using a computer it has always aided my role as a consultant.
Although the technology and the Internet has speeded the process for us recruiters, I certainly feel it has taken something away from the role. I loved the physical face to face of interviewing candidates, where one could build a unique and long lasting rapport with your candidate. An email and phone conversation just doesn’t seem to have quite the same appeal some how. Speed has taken over and it’s down to how fast the CV/Resume is sent by one click of the mouse.
Well now maybe I have seen a glimpse of the future for our industry after watching this video from Robert on the new Tele-Presence system from Cisco. I can certainly see corporate companies using this to interview candidates and it certainly will make it easier to get a panel interview together. For me I just hope it gets us back Read more:Future

Whats next, will all top blogs have their own jobs boards? 2006-10-24 18:42:00 It just seems every day now something is happening to effect the recruitment industry, to the point I am sure I could write full time.
Again by pure chance I was reading on of my favorite blogs TechCrunch and out of pure curiosity I clicked on the Cool Jobs link. Obviously I was expecting to see a list of vacancies at TechCrunch but no, they now have there own jobs board called CrunchBoard. I suppose it takes advertising with Google Adwords or Indeed.com to the next level, when it comes to finding passive candidates.
Thinking about it it is a superb way to find passive candidates, with 129k subscribed readers all with a keen interest in technology, I would assume they must pick up some quality candidates. Although I am a little late with this news, as they launched in August it is probably a good time to see how they are doing, maybe Michael would let us know.

I am over the moon 2006-10-27 20:07:25 I just had to write this post and although it isn’t recruitment related, I just have to shout it out to any one that happens to be passing.
About 5 minutes ago I finally upgraded my Wordpress 2.0 to 2.4 and if you are savvy the you will know I have missed the upgrades between, basically I just didn’t have the nerve to tackle the upgrade. Well I knew I had to do it sometime and as I had an hour to kill I decided to take the bull by the horns and go for it.
I just couldn’t believe it first time without a hiccup, I am so over the moon I just had to shout it out. In the end it was so easy but saying that I have been told this before and it has ended in tears. So if you have been putting it of doing it also then don’t panic it was fine, unless of course no one can see this post then I am buggered!!

A job board just for your voice!! 2006-10-30 15:20:18 This must be one of the most unique job boards that I have come across. The company is called Voice123 and the company specialise in voice overs for all kinds of industries, from the obvious including dubbing for films to answer phone messages.
Having been in recruitment for so many years I have always felt my voice is my best asset, as I have been able to get through so many doors using the phone. So I thought I would register my voice, to see if some talent scout can find me. To date I haven’t been inundated with offers but it would help if I had up loaded a recording of my voice!
What does concern me is that almost immediately after signing up I get an email for a possible role, to apply I need to sign up for a premium membership costing almost $200, as a result I am very suspicious. So initially I was keen to promote this site, now I am not so sure from what seemed like a fantastic idea turns out to be an opportunity to take money from the unsuspecting.

The Results of the National Online Recruitment Awards 2006-10-31 14:24:46 The results are now in for the National
Online RecruitmentAwards
from Stephen O’Donnell at alljobsUK, the winners are below. I haven’t too much to say on this although you may like to read some insider comments from Louise of UKRecuiter who as one of the panelists has her own views on the winners
One of the controversial winners at the moment would be Monster, particularly after Jason Goldbergs comments on Exceler8ion but looking more deeply there are subtle differences between the .com and the .co.uk sites and maybe .com could learn from the UK!
For me I was pleased to see Jobserve come back after a few years absence, in fact since 2001 when they last won this category, they were the first jobsite I used a few years back so I suppose I have a soft spot for them.
Finally I noticed that Totaljobs haven’t quite made the grade this year, a favorite of mine maybe too much concentration on pleasing the recruiters rather than the job seekers.
So the winners are:

The worst job in the world 2006-11-03 17:33:20
Well its Friday and I have not put a video on for a little while so I thought I would do a quick search on Google, for the worst job in the world.
I nearly put this on before but it was the bad language that made me hesitate, but this time I decided I would post it with the warning, but it will make you laugh.
Still I can think of worst jobs, as I have recruited for many of them.

A Revamp of Recruitment Views 2006-11-04 22:05:33 Recently I have been thinking that Recruitment
Views needed a bit of a revamp, personally I am no where near as talented as those guys and girls at Exceler8ion. Still I thought I would have ago after the success with the wordpress upgrade.
So after playing with the templates at www.wordpress.com free blogs, I was quite keen on the WP-Andreas09 theme. Mainly because it had three columns and it uses sidebar widgets, which makes it so much easier to edit but more importantly I am less likely to make mistakes!
Anyway I hope you like it, personally I think it is easier for you to navigate. I may still get a real designer on the case at some stage but for now I am happy with it. Oh and I thought the blogroll looks so much better!

Times Educational Supplement relaunches their Jobsite this Friday 2006-11-09 16:11:47 The other day I was pleased to hear from David Bowen the Marketing manager of TES "The TimesEducationalSupplement
", a paper I have know for many years albeit only as paper delivery boy! So I have to admit that is about as much as I know and of course we didn’t have Internet in those days.
David asked me if I would do a pre launch review, which comes on the back of the recent National Online Recruitment Awards. Obviously as I am not a teacher and as such my perspective may be slightly off, I do have a good feel for job boards from my constant use over the years.
Having registered and applied for a couple of their positions, I found the site to be very easy to navigate and non time consuming, a huge plus and makes up for its lack of a sophisticated search function. In fact their browse facility is great, as it is simple and logical, you can just pick the educational level then the subject and then apply, very easy and short steps.
What it does lack is a simple way to a Read more:Friday
Battle Between Two Recruitment Consultancies 2006-11-14 11:48:21 When will companies ever learn, I know we all have seen this before, yet again another two recruitment consultants are in the press again fighting over data protection. It still amazes me how companies still do not adequately protect themselves against data fraud, It has happened to me on both sides of the fence.
The only advice I can give is you need to get someone in to really shore up your systems, because I can guarantee one of your consultants will steal your data. Having said that I used Arithon, which is a web based system and just by its nature is more secure. It is always hardest at the start when you haven’t the cash to invest in protection, maybe the route it to keep your consultants happy so they do not leave!
Anyway if you want to read the article it can be found at computer weekly
