2007-04-06 19:55:01
joost logo Joost is an interactive software for distributing TV shows and other forms of video over the Web using peer-to-peer tv technology, created by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis (founders of Skype and Kazaa). Joost began development in 2006. Working under the code name "The Venice Project," Zennstrom and Friis have assembled teams of some 150 software developers in about a half-dozen cities around the world, including New York, London, Leiden and Toulouse. Joost's CTO is Dirk-Willem van Gulik. The teams are currently in negotiations with TV networks. It has signed up with Warner Music, Ministry of Sound TV and production company Endemol for the beta. In February 2007, Viacom entered into a deal with the company to distribute content from its media properties, including MTV Networks, BET and film studio Paramount Pictures. Company representatives have gone on record as saying the name should be pronounced as "juiced". This differs from the pronunciation of the Dutch first nam

Tired of being on leave and Japanese class woes
2007-04-04 01:19:27
Yes it's official, I'm a little over half way way through my two month leave from work and I am now officially tired of being away from work. I've been going out, having fun and relaxing but now I feel over relaxed and unproductive. I still have a couple weeks left until I return on the 27th but I am excited about that first day back and how I will feel. I know many people probably think I am ungrateful and they themselves would give anything for a two month break from work paid but as I type this an old proverb runs through my head with the meaning too much of anything is never good...I guess it applies to time off from work as well? who would have thought. I have not been to Japanese class in three weeks because class was discontinued for this term, I need to call Tomoko sensei to work out what the plan will be after easter. I have a few interesting plans for this long holiday weekend such as going to Carnival and maybe a trip to the country early next week, looking forward to th

Kitano Tsunetomi
2007-03-27 17:01:24
A very good friend of mine who I met through this site and fellow Japan, Anime, Gaming enthusiast has introduced me and will continue to help to delve further into the world of Japanese/Asian art. My first lesson/peek is of a famous early 20th century artist Kitano Tsunetomi. Source - Hanga.com Kitano Tsunetomi was a well known bijin-ga printmaker and painter. In 1880, he was born in Kanazawa with the name Tomitaro. As a young man, Tsunetomi worked as an apprentice to a woodblock carver after which he became a print carver for the newspaper Hokkoku Shinpo. He later moved to Osaka to study nihon-ga style painting under Inano Toshitsune, a student of Yoshitoshi. In 1901, he began working as an illustrator for the newspaper Osaka Shinbun. Beginning in 1910, Tsunetomi began to exhibit paintings in the Bunten shows, and he won a prize in the 5th Bunten (1911) for his bijin-ga painting "Rain during Sunshine". He published a folio of four prints in 1918 titled "Spring and Autumn in the Lic

Japan Earthquakes rock Pacific nations
2007-03-25 10:04:48
An earthquake of magnitude 7.1 has struck off the west coast of Japan 's largest island, Honshu. Initial reports say at least one person was killed and 50 injured in the tremor that was felt as far away as Tokyo. A tsunami warning was issued for a short time for the Ishikawa prefecture, with waves of up to 50cm reported. Meanwhile, two powerful earthquakes also hit near Vanuatu in the southern Pacific . US seismologists reported them as having magnitudes of 7.2 and 6.0. The larger struck at 1140 (0040 GMT Sunday), and was followed 28 minutes later by the magnitude 6.0 quake, both located 335km (210 miles) south-east of the capital, Port Vila. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. However, police said they were checking remote islands where the quake was closer to land areas. Seismically active The Japan earthquake struck at 0942 (0042 GMT). Its epicentre was 300km (200 miles) north-west of Tokyo about 50km (30 miles) below the seabed, Japan's meteorological agency

Its been three months time to drop another batch of interesting sites and blogs upon you again. Japanese Lesson One of the best websites on the net for high quality, short and relevant Japanese tutorials. Every time I check I can find good stuff to help me in my studies and I really like that. Kurzanne Memoirs A very good friend and civil servant colleague has been posted by his Ministry (foreign affairs) in South Africa for a couple years. He and his wife Suzanne has started a blog of their experiences complete with images and more, highly recommended. Japanesepod101 recently discovered site that I have yet to delve deep into. Has tonnes of Japanese learning podcasts for various levels of students of the language. I think I will really like this site and you will too if you want to learn Japanese.

300 Movie - An action packed showcase of bodies, parts of bodies and blood escaping from bodies
2007-03-15 17:41:33
I had originally planed to watch this movie tomorrow night but when one of my friends told me he was going to Carib to buy tickets early before the crowd, I couldn't help but slip my money to him as well when the excitement took over. The theatre was packed to the brim and before the movie even started I could hear the excitement in the theatre as most people were chatting about their favourite scenes and sounds from the various trailers and sneak peeks that have been out for about 6 months now. I was getting crazy when the lights dimmed because of the seemingly endless showing of commercials and then previews of movies to come (except TMNT), but then the lights went completely off, the screen expanded and I buckled up for the best ride I had in the genre since Troy. History says that in the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing overwhelming odds, their sacrifice inspired all of Greece to

Proud to be a Caribbean National - Cricket Worldcup 2007 Opening Ceremony
2007-03-12 06:56:00
I just had the opportunity to view one of the most positive, heartwarming, emotion inducing events that I have seen on television in a long time - the opening ceremony of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 in Trelawny Jamaica. If that ceremony was the only thing to rank by I would say that the tournament was a resounding success but as I snap back to reality I realise that this is only the beginning as there are are close to 50 days left of cricket playing action left to transpire in the Caribbean . I am excited, I am pumped up and I am always ready to "rally 'round the West Indies" I know they will do us proud and as one of the presenters said it starts in Jamaica but ends but ends in Barbados, I just hope it ends with West Indies lifting that spectacular trophy. As more media especially pictures of the ceremony goes unto the internet in the coming days I will be sure to post them as my way of sharing the experience.

10 Days I want to forget...quickly
2007-03-07 04:48:39
The last week and a half has been quite the roller coaster ride for me. My new ISP - Flow Jamaica
2007-02-23 21:30:04
flow jamaicaI didn't say much about it, but for the past 10 weeks I have had a new ISP at home, a newish telecommunications company in Jamaica name Flow Jamaica. I wanted to have some time to test out and evaluate their service before I posted about it as I didn't want to be influenced by my excitement of having a super fast internet connection. Well I have a special bundle of telephone, digital cable and internet. I get 300 free minutes per month to call anywhere in the North America and the UK and that has come in handy for calling my older brother and sister (by my father side) and the hordes of friends I grew up with that are going to school abroad or migrated. I am very satisfied with the phone service, it is crisp and clear and have had no problems with drop calls and such and I can all any other phone network available in Jamaica at reasonable rates. I have 175 digital cable channels with all my favourites such as speed, history, discovery, Starz etc included but I must admit

Japan Drafts Guidelines For Robot Use!
2007-04-08 06:38:57
Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has drafted a 60-page set of proposals for managing the development of robots. It is called the Draft Guidelines to Secure the Safe Performance of Next Generation Robot s. The document will require robots to report any injuries they cause to humans they are safeguarding in a central database. It also suggests that a special study group of industrialists, academics, ministry officials and lawyers be formed to finalize the rules on robot development. As a country with an aging population and decreasing population of youngsters, Japan supposes it will not be long until robots fulfill roles needed to manage a household. Members of the Japan Robotics Association say it is "just months away," to the release of next-generation security patrol and nursing robots. According to The Times, currently the Japanese "helper" robot market is estimated to be worth more than 10 billion yen or $83 million. The most recent robotic news reported a Univers

Japanese Android shows off people-lifting skills
2007-04-08 06:37:13
In a public demonstration held in Tokyo on March 28, a human-sized android showed off its weightlifting skills by successfully picking up a 30-kilogram (66-pound) package from a desk and lifting a 66-kilogram (145-pound) humanoid doll out of bed. University of Tokyo professor Yasuo Kuniyoshi and his team of engineers developed the 155-centimeter (61-inch) tall, 70-kilogram (154-pound) robot last year. A recent software upgrade allows the robot to move more like a human by constantly adjusting the power of its arm movements based on data received from 1800 tactile sensors embedded in its artificial skin. It is this system of sensor-based control — and not large motors — that gives the robot its strength. “Large motors are not safe for use in household robots,” explains Kuniyoshi. “Only a small amount of power is applied at each of this robot’s joints, but it can successfully move heavy objects by using the tactile sensors to regulate how it lifts and carries things.” The droi

Japan, China relationship getting better
2007-04-12 00:59:46
I rarely will ever blog about politics, war, international disputes, crimes and such topics, but I think I will blog about the improving relationship between Japan and China . Not many people here in the west, especially in the Caribbean know about many the differences issues that these two great countries have disagreed and even rioted over in the last 120 years. Lets just say that Japan and China has never been friends much in a while and in modern times issues have been lingering, beginning from as early as the last 19th century, throughout the 20th and now in the 21st. Wars found then especially the during the early to mid 1900s have left a last burden of animosity and mistrust between these two economic powerhouses but in recent times, especially now as the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe meet in Tokyo to work on thawing the icy relationship that their countries have shared for so long it seems that things are looking up and moving towards a health

Toko Komura - Japanese Salvation Army School Teacher in Kingston
2007-04-16 02:03:06
Toko Komura is from Kanagwa (Chigasaki) near Tokyo in Japan. Trained in tutoring the blind, she now teaches swimming and physical education at the Salvation Army School for the Blind in Kingston . A love affair with the sea and with children has made this the perfect career choice for her. "I love feeling free and I am an energetic person, so I go to the sea every week. Looking up at the sky every day and swimming in the pool also make me feel free," she tells Outlook. Toku came to Jamaica, she said, because "one of my dreams was to work with children all over the world. I love swimming and so when the Japanese Overseas Volunteer programme asked for a swimming instructor, it was my joy and my dream come true. I took the examinations and passed, now I am here." At the Salvation Army School for the Blind, the instructor says, "Everyone calls me Ms. Toko. I take care of the pool every day so students name the pool 'Ms. Toko's baby'. I feel happy when I hear that." japanese flag Some of

A Man Among Wolves - National Geographic Channel
2007-04-14 18:04:17
national Geographic Channel logoDoing some browsing this morning and found this upcoming program while checking my animal/nature related feeds. Very interesting from the previews and I'll be sure to check this out on APril the 16th on the Nation Geographic Channel. Just thought I'd share. eating with wolves Delve into the unique story of a maverick researcher named Shaun Ellis who raises abandoned wolf cubs and teaches them by example how to survive in the wild. In A Man Among Wolves , see how Shaun has given up everything to take a daring and unorthodox approach to understanding wolves’ every move—living and behaving like them, howling, licking, and snarling like them, even eating carcass meat like them. This one-hour special documents this man’s incredible journey to better grasp the complex nature of wolf society by immersing himself in their world as their accepted leader. It is a curious study that provides Shaun with one-of-a-kind insight into this feared predator. NGC Blog

Joost (beta) - My Review and Free Invites!
2007-04-18 19:27:02
Well I have been fiddling around with Joost Beta now for almost two weeks after receiving an invite from RockyMoore.com withing an hour of requesting one. So far I have been impressed by the experience of watching TV programs over my high speed connection and I have even being watching some of the Sci-fi themed series as well as the Gamestar Channel. I've only had one technical issue with the program when it was unavailable for about a day during the updating of the client to 0.9.2. Other than that I have nothing but high scores and high hopes for the future of this program. I like the light, easy to load feel that the program has so far and I hope it doesn't turn into a resource hogging, overweight application like so many video related software. Well on the matter of invites I got two to give out to visitors to my blog. Just Leave a comment with your: First Name: Last Name: Email Address: I will send the 2 invites out to randomly to any two of these persons in a couple of

Japanese claases restarted wooohooo!
2007-04-22 07:06:32
After being a lazy bum at sitting at home through most of my vacation leave from work and missing half of last term's Japanese classes I went to my first class of the new term today. The two hour classes on Saturdays only will continue but the class has dwindled down even further to just me and a young lady named Farah (very focused and inspiring young person I might add). Did A whole lot of revisions today as I am rusted almost to the core, but as usual Tomoko sensei was a real sport and went through a lot of things we have already done to refresh them in our minds. I have a lot of things to review and study up for next week's class. I mainly need to review all of the verbs that I have been using so far, I have not "forgotten" them but just need to practise with them more, but the most important thing I need to know is the hiragana and Kanji of a couple of important places such as. Hospital, Post Office, School, Convenience Store, Flower Shop, Pharmacy, Library etc. I hope to mak

The car I hope to be driving in 15-20 years - Honda FCX
2007-04-21 19:52:36
Adding to my request for a F-22 Raptor is another request for a Honda FCX. I have been follwoing the development of quite a few hydrogen fuel cell alternative motor vehicles but this is one that I like the most. Well unlike my dreams of a Raptor this dream has a good chance of becoming truth, well stay tuned, in another 15 or so years you'll know if I got one of the production models ^-^. Information about the car The Honda FCX (presumably meaning Fuel Cell eXperimental) is a hydrogen fuel cell automobile manufactured by Honda. It is said to be entirely silent in operation. Currently there are more than 20 vehicles in the hands of customers in three different states, including the state of New York, city of Las Vegas, Chula Vista, San Francisco and the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Limited marketing of a latest fuel cell vehicle based on the 2007 concept model is to begin in 2008 in Japan and the U.S. Honda believes it could start mass producing vehicles based on the F

Yes, all these weeks with Monday nights void of Heroes will come to an end tomorrow when it returns. I have spent the time trying to stay away from anything and everything related to Heroes to try and not get to excited and make the time seem longer, I didn't even do that episode recap I promised. I don't even have to say much because all the information and sneak peeks about the upcoming episodes are online for all to see but I just had to post the most recent video I could find. Next - an unexpectedly good film
2007-04-27 19:07:30
Firstly, I hated Mr. Cage's last film Ghost Rider. I think that they made a mockery of a perfectly good film license and could have made a more deep film, but instead they went will the age old love story happily ever after crap. Yes it was successful (i think) but anyway this about the film Next. Went to the theatre with no idea in the world what was showing, it was my girlfriends birthday on Wednesday and a trip to the movies was a part of the night's festivities. Quite frankly I don't even remember what five films were showing clearly at the theatre, but all I know it was a choice between this or Mr Bean...so you should understand my choice. Firstly, Next is a science fiction film based on the science fiction short story "The Golden Man". The film stars Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore, and Jessica Biel. Cris Johnson (played by Nicolas Cage) was born with an incredible, if somewhat limited, superpower that has tormented him for years, namely, the ability to see two minutes into the

Earth-like Planet found - Gliese 581 c
2007-04-26 17:36:04
Its not the first one to be found, just last year a very small earth-like planet and super large one was found and talked about, but those are were said to be icy almost inhospitable planets. This news planet, Gliese 581 c seems to be the closest planet to with "Earth -like" conditions scientists have found. Gliese 581 cCould this be the home of my great great great great great grandkids? Gliese 581 c is an extrasolar planet orbiting the red dwarf star Gliese 581. It appears to be in the habitable zone of space surrounding the star, where the surface temperatures of any planets present might maintain liquid water. The planet is relatively close, 20.5 light years (120 trillion miles) from Earth in the constellation of Libra. Its star is identified as Gliese 581, by its number in the Gliese Catalogue of Nearby Stars. 20 episodes of Heroes gone, can any episode top the experience of "String Theory"?
2007-05-01 05:43:04
My heart is still beating, my palms are sweaty, my eyebrow is twitching and I am shaking all over, thats the effect that the last hour of television has had on me. What was I watching you ask? the 20th episode of the best thing on television since, since, since [insert past favorite show here]. I was watching Heroes! This episode has everything a fan of the series could have wanted; action, surprise, emotions, death, advancing storyline, destruction and plot twists. I will not spoil it but lets just say all major characters are either dead or involved in this episode, all acting is top notch and the ending will have you screaming like a love starved chimpanzee while jumping around your living room! I have added a few more pictures to the Heroes Picture Gallery.

The Most Expensive Toy in Japan - $41,468
2007-05-11 21:30:00
Saw this on Rising Sun of Nihon and just had to post it. And you thought the Play Station 3 was overpriced. How about a "Gundam Fixed Platinum?" Japan 's Ginza Tanaka and toymaker Bandai Co. unveiled a miniature of Japan's famous animated robot character - "Gundam." The, um, little fellow weighs in at a mighty small 1,400 grams (45oz) and stands 13cm (5") tall. AND...he is made of pure platinum. Aren't you glad it's just a miniature? At today's prices, melted down, he would go for $41,468! What's the dumbest thing you think someone can make out of platinum?
