The San Diego Sheriff's Aviation Unit
2008-05-17 20:07:58
The San Diego Sheriff ’s Aviation Unit is the unit I belong to. We are made up of 15 deputy sheriffs, two sergeants and one lieutenant. At the time of this article 11 of the deputies are pilots while 4 are occupying TFO slots. Most tactical flight officers eventually become pilots. The two sergeants and the lieutenant are also pilots. At present our air assets include 6 Mcdonnell Douglas 500

The Tactical Flight Officer
2008-04-28 13:04:08
A police air crew normally consists of the pilot and the observer, also referred to as a tactical flight officer. Not only does “Tactical Flight Officer” sound way cooler, but it really is much more descriptive of the duties of the non-pilot half of the air crew. It is also the first position that the vast majority of law enforcement officers will fill upon being assigned to the aviati

Are Police Helicopter Pilots Dangerous?
2008-04-15 12:12:10
Admittedly this article is in response to a page on the World Wide Web that makes some pretty one sided statements about police pilots. This particular page states that most police pilots are “unsafe”, “endanger the public”, “do not have proper training" are "inexperienced”, “conduct dangerous maneuvers”, and that by training police officer

Anatomy of a Helicopter Rescue
2008-04-04 10:36:08
It's the pure nature of the helicopter and it's ability to hover that very often takes it to remote and rugged locations, on a variety of missions.  When it's a law enforcement helicopter that mission can be to pluck someone out of a hostile environment and reposition them to a place of safety.  Rarely are there witnesses to these events except the helicopter crew and the person(s) being

Why Most Police Pilots are Sworn Officers
2008-03-26 13:07:14
Spend any amount of time visiting helicopter websites, or particularly helicopter training and career websites, and the topic of becoming a police helicopter pilot will eventually come up.  It is often when someone poses the question of how they can become a police helicopter pilot, which is swiftly met with answers such as "it is very hard", "they hire from a pool of beat cops", "they want y

Quick peak at Police Aviation
2008-03-14 15:33:27
For many in police work the field is already an exciting, adventurous and rewarding career.  Most police officers or deputy sheriffs can't imagine doing anything else.  But when police work is combined with flying helicopters, a case can be made that it is the ultimate dream job for those who love to fly.You could go further and argue that being a law enforcement officer in the sky has a

Silver State Helicopters dashes student pilots dreams!
2008-02-08 15:54:42
The news this week of Silver State Helicopters closing their doors, has prompted me to do what I have been considering for some time.  Blogging about police helicopters.  So what’s the connection you ask?  When Silver State Helicopters closed it’s doors I can only imagine that they also slammed the door shut on the hopes, dreams and aspirations of many would be helicopte

San Diego Police Helicopter FlIR Video-Suicide
2008-11-10 16:54:58
Caution:  This video does show a subject shoot himself as captured through the helicopter's FLIR heat sensing camera.  It should not be watched by young audiences.  I don't include this video for it's shock effect.  I include it because it has some valuable points regarding police helicopters and their value to officers on the ground and the general public.   For the reco

MD Helicopter's Factory Trainer returns to ASTREA Base
2008-11-10 11:02:47
Nick and his MD500E MD Helicopter factory pilot & CFI Nick Page returned to ASTREA Base this week with a helicopter in one hand, a cup of Starbucks in the other, and a huge CFI smile.  The smile is probably because like the rest of us he is still getting paid to fly helicopters, or in his case fall out of the sky 40-50 times a day in teaching that emergency procedure called a full touch d

Do Police Helicopters fly IFR
2008-11-04 10:22:17
Do police helicopters fly IFR (instrument flight rules)?  This is a question that comes up occasionally?  For the most part the answer is NO.  The real question is do we fly into clouds or fly into Instrument Meteorological Conditions, and or shoot Instrument Approaches to airports or other locations?  Again the answer is generally no, and here is why.  Bell 407 instr

Winter Storm Will Put Undocumented Aliens in Jeopardy
2008-12-18 12:53:52
A two stage winter storm moved through Southern California this week dumping considerable rain and snow in the mountains and across the county.  It has been my experience that any time harsh weather, whether hot or cold hits the county it takes it's toll on any undocumented aliens making their way north from Mexico through San Diego's rugged back country.  It's highly unlikely that a mig

Back Seat of the Bell 407
2008-12-02 10:12:15
This week I got the opportunity to hop in the back seat of the Bell 407 while the "duty crew" took it on a patrol flight.  The 407 is a 7 seat helicopter that replaced the Bell Jet Longranger in Bell's product line.  We took possession of this helicopter (N958TR) exactly one year ago this month.  It has plenty of power and speed along with video downlink capabilities.

Responding to Air Crashes- A part of Police Aviation
2008-11-23 17:59:11
Sadly air crashes, and fatal air crashes are a daily part of life in the U.S. and most parts of the world.  Logon on to the NTSB's accident database, and click on the "list of accidents by month" and you will see that not a month goes by that numerous fatal air crashes don't occur.  The sudden loss of any innocent life is always sad and tragic.  As a part of the
