574.8km/h - French Set New Rail Speed Record
2007-04-03 18:35:51
New story from the BBC. The TGV V150 has set a rail speed record of 574.8 km/hr (train on conventional rails) but failed to break the Japanese record of 581 km/hr set in 2003 by the Maglev train. More about Maglev. Marseille to Calais (1067 km) in 2 hours - perhaps if the modified rails get in place. Unfortunately here in Canada, once a proud pioneer in rail transportation, such a high speed rail system does not exist. Pity, I would like to travel to Vancouver from Toronto (3354 km) one day and not have to get off the ground. Flight time by the way is 4 hours and 10 minutes.

Google offers High Speed Broadband - via the toilet?
2007-04-02 04:56:53
All of those free Google Services and now the ultimate, with TiSP; Google’s new Toilet WiFi service. Why should I switch to Google TiSP? It’s fast. In our testing, TiSP delivers a 10x higher flow rate than basic DSL. It’s FREE. No more paying hundreds of dollars a year for Internet service that doesn’t even necessarily extend to your bathroom! It’s good for you. Your FREE TiSP service includes a Google Toolbar-based analysis of your dietary habits and genetic predispositions, along with recommendations for healthier living. You can upgrade to the “Royal Flush Service” for only $24.95/mo. “Actual speeds will vary, depending on network traffic and sewer line conditions. Users with low-flow toilets may simultaneously experience a saving-the-environment glow and slower-data-speed blues” April 1 is well known for various pranks. Good one by Google!

B&W - Negatives making a comeback?
2007-04-01 18:19:51
Singapore at night! Singapore Business district night view, originally uploaded by * etoile. Taken with a Ricoh GR10 on Ilford XP2, exposure was not recorded. I have posted this image to start a discussion (thanks to * etoile on flickr). I have posted several HDR images of the last little while, mainly from Trey Ratcliff. I have admired Trey’s HDR images for awhile now and have been impressed by the detail, brilliance and hyper realism. (More on HDR here.) Now to my point. I received a comment regarding an HDR image from a fellow blogger Zep Hopper at www.In-Sect.com. The comment can be seen here. And to some degree I do agree with Zep, although they don’t make me dizzy there are elements of the images that are more unrealistic than hyper realistic and something that your would not expect to see in conventional photography. When you get down to it, like art, it is a matter of personal preference and taste. I posted the B&W image above to start the discussion around wha

International Philosophy World Cup I think the crew of writers and actors for Monty Python were way ahead of their time. This is a great skit from the 70’s. After Nietzsche gets booked he accuses Confucius (referee) of having no “free will” - bloody funny!. Check out the line ups!

I have heard of Casual Fridays but this might be more popular!
2007-04-10 01:32:52
In this time of political correctness in the office I am tempted to have this image blown up and put on my cubicle at work. Of course the Office Manager would have it down in 3 milliseconds. Can’t say I didn’t try.     But I did recently see this one in the mens toilet! Now I do think that management will take this one down since a lot of email follow up can be done during your trip to the washroom.

Barenaked Ladies - One Week (The Bathroom Sessions)
2007-04-11 04:34:10
It’s always great to sit back and have a smile and the Ladies always do that for me. Great job with this rendition of “One Week ” by Ed and Steve. I have followed them since 1991 being from Toronto myself (back in my university days). These series of songs were done “unplugged” by their studio (Nettwerk Music) for You Tube (Sort of Barenaked in the Raw) Lyrics for your reference (or sing along - check the links in the lyrics): Its been one week since you looked at me Cocked your head to the side and said Im angry. Five days since you laughed at me Saying get that together come back and see me. Three days since the living room I realized its all my fault, but couldnt tell you Yesterday youd forgiven me But itll still be two days till I say Im sorry Hold it now and watch the hoodwink As I make you stop, think Youll think youre looking at aquaman I summon fish to the dish, although I like the chalet swiss I like the sushi cause its never touched a frying pan

Future by Design Trailer - William Gazecki
2007-04-14 18:58:11
Great trailer for the movie Future by Design by director William Gazecki. It is the story of Jacque Fresco a 90 year futurist and prolific inventor. He was the founder of Revell Plastics company, now Revell Monogram, the plastic model company. His organization, The Venus Project works to provide a global vision of hope for the future of humankind in our technological age. His principal theories are based on a ‘resource-based economy’ that replaces the need for the scarcity-oriented monetary economy we have now. The Venus Project reflects the integration of the best of science and technology into a comprehensive plan for a new society.

Hasbeen Celebrity Lookalike
2007-04-17 05:27:14
Well when I thought of this one I was scratching my head, who do I pick. My choice (purely random) was Carrot Top. Now initially I thought that Carrot Top did not resemble anyone (that I knew of, let a lone a celebrity) After some deliberation (5 sec. approximately), I thought he looked like Mick Hucknall of the 80’s British Band Simply Red. See below. Now I looked for a tool that would help me in my search for a lookalike for Carrot Top. I came across the My Heritage site that has an interesting online face recognition tool. Hey, perfect I thought, so instead of my picture I dropped Carrot Top’s pic into the face recognition engine. The very interesting results are below, wow not a man in the list. - This is not Photoshop’d, this is what the engine gave me, some really classic actresses there…..I love technology!

Virgina Tech Tragedy Spawns Cyber Experts
2007-04-21 18:06:52
I have a problem, well really a bitch, a gripe, complaint or whatever you want to call it with the reaction comments and opinions of many people (blogs included) in the cyberworld. Specifically my complaint is with all of those who have deputized themselves as police officers, detectives, reporters, journalists, crime scene experts, grief counselors, psychiatrists, psychologists, sociologists, regarding the Virginia Tech tragedy. I will also express my opinion on the reckless media outlets (who will remain nameless) who are so driven to make a buck that they will sensationalize, hypothesize and rationalize their broadcasts and writings from sun up till sun down over this tragedy. They will also do this off the backs of the victims families with total disregard for their privacy, grief and suffering they must be feeling. I would expect the expert analysis of this event to be left to just those people, the experts, who will be able to piece together the unfortunate string of actions that

Another brilliant WTF! Sheryl Crow will save the planet - one square at a time!
2007-04-23 23:26:10
Sheryl Crow has been smokin the Al Gore spliff and she has been inhaling. She had an idea as she claims that will help the vast deforestation of the planet . When you visit the washroom, toilet, comode, bathroom, restroom, john, lavatory, ladies, gents, powder room, water closet, public convenience, latrine, or the privy you restarin yourself and use only one square or piece of toilet paper. Her blog post can be seen here. To quote: “Although my ideas are in the earliest stages of development, they are, in my mind, worth investigating. One of my favorites is in the area of forest conservation which we heavily rely on for oxygen. I propose a limitation be put on how many squares of toilet paper can be used in any one sitting. Now, I don’t want to rob any law-abiding American of his or her God-given rights, but I think we are an industrious enough people that we can make it work with only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where 2 to 3
