Consumer Reports makes its Top 10 Picks
2007-03-01 16:22:49
Every year Consumer Reports makes it “Top Picks” in a number of practical and interesting categories. Each of the top picks are vehicles that have met Consumer Reports ’ most stringent requirements in three main areas: Testing. Consumer Reports has tested more than 250 vehicles and each of the top picks scored at or near the top in its category. Reliability. Each top pick has a historical track record of scoring average or better in reliability. Reliability data are based on more than 1.3 million responses to the Annual CR Car Reliability Survey. Safety. Each top pick has performed adequately in overall crash protection as tested by the government or insurance industry. (Refer to our posts on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s “Safest Cars” report here and here. Safest Cars of 2007 - Part 2
2007-03-01 15:29:16
In our previous post we began looking at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s “Safest Cars for 2007″. There are seven vehicles in the Midsize SUV category that made the list: 2007 Acura RDX - it is model year debut, the Acura RDX received Good ratings in the frontal and size impact crash tests and comes standard with electronic stability control. 2007 Ford Edge - also making its debut is the 2007 Ford Edge which received “Good” ratings in both crash test categories. ESC (electronic stability control) comes standard in the 2007 Ford Edge. 2007 Honda Pilot - Honda’s well reviewed midsize SUV also makes the grade with “Good” ratings and comes standard with ESC. 2007 Lincoln MKX - another new model, this time from Lincoln makes the list of “safest cars for 2007″. Would You Ever Buy A Car Online?
2007-02-27 22:45:53
Have you ever used the internet to help you buy a new car? Maybe you initiated a conversion with the dealer online, maybe you purchased a new car or truck without ever setting foot in the dealership. We’d love to hear about your experience. What did you like? What didn’t you like? Was the sales person easy to communicate with via email or over the phone? How much work did you do online? What sites did you use? Recent data suggest that more than 70% of consumers start shopping for a vehicle online yet only 10% actually purchase directly this way. I think that this trend is slowly changing, but the simple fact is that next to a home a car is usually the second largest purchase we make. We’re not talking shoes, books or sporting good here, we’re talking cars. Buying a car is an emotional process - you want to kick the tires, you love that “new car smell”, you want to take a test-drive. QUESTION: do you think you’ll ever purchase a car on

Safest Cars of 2007
2007-02-27 22:10:07
Every year the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety publishes its “Top Safety Pick” report. The Institue provides a rating of “good”, “acceptable”, “marginal”, or “poor” based on each vehicle’s performance in high-speed front and side impact tests as well as evaluations of seat and head restraints for protection against injuries sustained in rear-impact crashes. In order for a vehicle to be eligible for the “Top Safety Pick” it must first receive a “GOOD” rating in all three tests. Starting in 2007, each winning vehicle must also offer electronic stability control (ESC). ESC systems use automatic computer-controlled braking of individual wheels to help the driver maintain control in situations where a vehicle without ESC would skid out of control and likely leave the road. This criteria was added based on Institute research indicating that ESC significantly reduces crash risk, especially fat

CarFax Accurate Less Than 60% Of The Time
2007-02-27 21:36:33
Recently Diane Lade, a reporter for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, wrote a story doubting the validity of data contained in CarFax reports. Most car dealers will gladly run a free CarFax report on a specific car you are considering buying. The problem? “I’ve found CarFaxes to be accurate less than 60 percent of the time,” said Tim Blake, a Miami attorney specializing in auto fraud. CarFax reached a settlement to a nationwide class action lawsuit charging that the reports were not as accurate as CarFax had led consumers to believe. Under the settlement terms, individuals who purchased a CarFax vehicle history report prior to Oct. 27, 2006, are eligible to participate in the settlement. Don’t expect to receive any money, however, as consumers who file claims are eligible for free or discounted CarFax reports, or a 20% discount on a vehicle inspection. Those interested must file a claim form by May 27. The form is available at www.westcarsettlement.com. The a

Smart Cars Are Coming
2007-01-19 16:36:25
One of the bigger stories of the Detroit International Auto Show is that the Smart ForTwo is expected to arrive in US showrooms during the first quarter of 2008. There will initially be 50-60 dealerships (with priority going to DaimlerChrysler dealers who won’t have to build separate showrooms) carrying the SmartUSA brand that is expected to have a base price of less than $15,000. If you’ve never seen one of these vehicles on the road, you will be amazed when you finally do. Smart cars are definitely small but offer a spacious interior with plenty of room for even the tallest passengers. So how small “really” is the ForTwo? For starters, the ForTwo is 8.8 feet long (you can usually fit two ForTwos in a single parking space!), 5.1 feet tall (similar to most luxury sedans), and 5.1 feet wide (comfortably fits two 6 foot 5 inch passengers with room to spare!). Okay, but will it move? Topping out at 90 miles per hour, the ForTwo has plenty of speed for the high
