David Lundahl Fire Element Necklace
2007-04-03 11:52:08
In case you haven’t noticed, I’m not much of a nature girl. To me, a three star hotel is “roughing it.” But even still, I am loving David Lundahl’s new Element s line. The collection includes pendants and rings bearing the symbols of Fire, Water, Earth, Metal, and Wood. If you are not sure what element you are, the website has a handy-dandy “find your element” quiz. It selected “Fire” for me, which was perfect because the vain side of me liked the fire symbol best, anyway. The symbols are based in Feng Shui and offer a “balanced sense of style”. I don’t really buy into Feng Shui, but I do know that the right accessories really tie an outfit together, so I guess some would call that balance. According to the website, Fire represents “courage, zeal, joy, and courtesy.” In relation to myself, I would say “yes, yes, sometimes, and no way.” It does say that Fire people tend to have a &

A.V. Max Silk Bracelets
2007-03-30 12:33:55
Whenever I find a particular item that I like, I buy it in every variation. Several years ago, I found the perfect tee at Express, so I bought it in every color. I own over a dozen different James Perse tops. I fell in love with a pair of pumps, and couldn’t decide between purple or green - so I bought both. The same thing happened with these A.V. Max bracelets, purchased from BlueFly.com. I started with the purple and blue bracelets - loved them so much I bought three more (one broke the first time I wore it - BlueFly accepted the return with no hassle). These are so versatile. I tend to avoid patterned shirts, so these bracelets just add a splash of whimsy. I just love the wild patterns - perfect in small doses. The blue one looks very Pucci, doesn’t it? The silk scarf wrapped around shiny faux pearls give it a very vintage and playful feel. I must admit, sometimes the silk annoys me. I have teeny, tiny, child-sized wrists, so ALL bracelets are big on me. These are no ex

Colin Stewart Feathered Pumps
2007-03-27 21:20:31
This is one of my rare purchases from the Victoria’s Secret catalogue. I have never been a fan of their quality, but I just fell in love with these shoes, and they weren’t much of an investment - $68, I believe. I’m a big feathers fan. Not that obnoxious maribou that pops up on trophy wife negligees or explodes around prom season. I like real feathers. There is something very alluring about them. Perhaps they remind me of classic burlesque dancers. But whatever it is, I adore them as accents. The shoes are certainly not the most comfortable in the world. They aren’t bad though. A pair of Dr. Scholl’s gel pads are a life saver. But the way the feathers sweep forward onto my ankle makes it all worth it. They are wonderfully unique and get almost as much attention as my blindingly-bright Moschino sequined pumps. Call me a pessimist, but I don’t expect these to last long.

Ann Taylor Loft Graphic Dot Top
2007-03-26 01:57:58
This is another one of those tops that is just ok, until I see it has been marked down to $20… then it becomes awesome. I love the graphic print of this - and I am generally not a fan of prints. Love the color scheme too. The top is very comfortable and breezy. I must admit, I am a fan of the way it accentuates my bust line. But pas tthat, it gets a little dumpy, shape-wise. It’s a nice, easy-going top though, so it does have its perks. Not something I would have paid full price for, but for $20, it is definitely worth it.

Steve Madden “Deluxee” Pumps
2007-03-21 21:33:43
These were my wedding shoes. I really lucked out. Bridal shoes are just so bland - plain white satin, unadorned, with a few very basic styles. Truly hideous. I happened to find these on my near-daily tours through the Nordstrom website. I fell in love with them instantly. They are vintage-y, sexy, and something I would wear again. There was only one thing stopping me from buying these shoes: I hadn’t picked a dress yet! I stepped up my shoe browsing, just to see what else was out there. After about 3 days I realized I was not going to find anything more perfect than these shoes, and ordered them immediately. I bought my dress 2 weeks later - yes, I chose a dress to match my shoes. I even had my dress hemmed an inch too short so my shoes would peek out. The shoes received rave reviews at the wedding. Word must have gotten out about my fabulous shoes, for when I went around greeting people, one of the first things that people asked were to see my shoes (or maybe it was

Spork-Made: Sock Monkey Hat
2007-03-16 02:47:41
I was never really a hat-wearer, especially beanies. But when I found this one, I decided I had to become one! This was knit by yours truly, from this pattern on Knitty.com. The knitting itself was quite easy - I finished it in one day. It was everything else that I seemed to have problems with. First, it was choosing the yarn. I wanted brown instead of the grey recommended in the pattern. And I had to have the right amount of marled color. After much debate, and much purchasing and returning, I finally settled on inexpensive brown and off-white wool-blend and decided to knit the two colors together. This proved vaguely difficult when I got to the intarsia mouth section on the brim - I was working with both ends of two balls of yarn, in the round. It took me a half hour to untangle the yarn when I was able to break the yarn. The other problem I ran in to was the size. I measured my head before I began, and thought the medium would work. Well, I knit the whole thing, tried

Cotton Candy Romper
2007-03-14 20:20:09
This romper, while cute, isn’t normally my style. It’s a little too 70s, and it is not particularly flattering for my body. However, it is so soft and comfy, I couldn’t pass it up. It’s made of Modal, so it is really, really soft - and I am all about texture. It’s very light and airy, so it will be perfect for the hot Los Angeles nights (which are already upon us, even in March). It reminds me of the kind of thing you wear as a little kid, which I love - it makes me feel silly and playful. I got this from GraffittiPink.com, a new online boutique that specializes in lingerie and loungewear. They are Los Angeles-locals, which I always love. Cotton Candy is their house line, and if all the pieces are like this one, I think it will do very well.

Christian Lacroix Polka Dot Mary Janes
2007-03-06 01:00:43
Oh Lacroix shoes, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. One, your whimsical polka-dots. Two, your red trim that provides a delicate but decidedly modern detail. Three, your 3.5″ heel that is neither too narrow, nor too chunky. Four, your semi-rounded toe, not too pointy, just enough to lend an air of vintage maturity to an otherwise playful shoe. I picked these up at the Christian Lacroix boutique in Caeser’s Palace in Las Vegas. These are one of the few pairs of couture shoes that I loved enough to pay full price for. Well, technically, my husband did. The trip was a half-business, half-pleasure. He was on set all day, and I was left to my own devices in the shops on the strip. I fell in love with these the moment I saw them, and that love only grew when I tried them on. I put them on hold, telling the salespeople that I had to check with my husband. I continued with my shopping for the day, all the while thinking of those shoes. I finally sent him a tex

Moschino Orange Sequin Pumps
2007-03-02 21:29:40
These shoes were a trying experience for me. I had purchased very similar shoes a few weeks prior to buying these. They were also Moschino , but they were turquoise sequined halter-backs with a peep toe. I had been unable to decide between the turquoise (a more versatile color I thought) and the orange (more sparkle for the buck). I ended up with the turquoise because of one important detail: they had my size. But a week later, I was doing my usual trawl through the Macy’s clearance rack (the Macy’s near me is a “premiere” store - they carry a better selection than most Bloomies or Neiman Marcus stores) and came across a size 8.5 in orange! I kept telling myself that I didn’t need more shoes, let alone more beribboned sequined shoes - especially since I had just purchased a pair a week or so prior. But my obsessive nature got the best of me, and I was back the next day. The 8.5 was still there, and a perfect fit. I had to have it. I brought the s

Tufi Duek Vintage Velvet Top
2007-02-26 23:29:25
I fell in love with this Tufi Duek top the moment I saw it on BlueFly.com. I loved how classic it looked - 1940s secretary vintage. I was concerned by two factors. One was the price, which was about $100 (marked down from about $200). Not that much money, but more than I normally would spend on a single top while between jobs. The second was that it was very low-cut. I was also a bit concerned with the cut - empire waist tops can look dreadful and cut across my bust awkwardly. I decided I had to give it a try anyway - BlueFly has a fantastic return policy. I was - and still am - pleased beyond belief with my purchase. A $20 Nordstroms camisole beneath turned it from slutty and unflattering to a perfect business top. I usually pair it with black slacks or wool trousers, and my Prada pumps.

Kai Fragrance
2007-04-06 21:10:11
I debated for quite a while about whether or not to add a fragrance section to this site. After all, most people would consider perfume to be a cosmetic, not a fashion. I am almost as addicted to cosmetics as I am to fashion, but I don’t want the focus of this site to stray too far. However, many, many women see perfume as an essential part of their wardrobe, one of the first things they put on, along with lingerie. So, as you can see, fragrance won. I launch the fragrance section with Kai Fragrance , my “signature” scent. Before I discovered Kai, I was a real fragrance nut. Between bottles and samples, I probably have nearly 100 different scents. I found many that I liked, even loved, and changed my scent like I changed my clothes. Then I found Kai. Kai was created by Gaye Straza Rappaport as a way to capture the memory of a youth spent in Hawaii. The scent is tropical with strong notes of gardenia. I received a sample of it, and gave it a shot. Instead of run-and-gun snapshots taken by myself or whatever friend I could corner for 48 seconds, we are going to have shiny new photos that are in focus, properly lit, and have a bit of flair. Demonia Sculpted Heel Mary Janes
2007-04-17 09:23:06
These are a leftover from my days as a goth in high school. Most of my goth stuff is long gone, but there are a few pieces that I just can’t part with. This pair of shoes is one of them. I don’t remember where I got these - probably online. I do remember they were inexpensive - under $50. They are surprisingly comfortable for cheap shoes (in case you haven’t noticed by now, I am a total shoe snob). It’s not just because of the large heel. The platform sole allows for more padding than a typical shoe, and the faux leather is surprisingly soft and not prone to rubbing. Ah, that heel. That heel is, of course, what drew me to these shoes. I have always been fascinated by a sculpted heel. You can find a thousand different variations in shoe shape, but when it comes to heels, most shoes have one of three or four shapes, all a variation of each other. So whenever I find something with an interesting heel (for example, this shoe by Dior), it immediately grabs

Vinxi Stork Tee - Style and Controversy
2007-04-20 00:33:17
I’m a little bit of a troublemaker. Not in a “shop-lifting, coke-snorting, fist-fighting” way, just in an “I like to voice my opinion on controversial topics to see whose convictions are stronger” way. I am a firmly pro-choice, with a sense of humor darker than “Heathers,” so this design was calling my name. This shirt hails from Vinxi Clothing, a growing Orange County company started by a trio of guys. All of their shirts present pop culture, historical, and political imagery that hides - or flaunts - a subversive message. The Stork design was recently banned from a Midwestern music/fashion chain due to customer complaints. I love controversy. The shirt is delightfully soft 100% cotton. It’s a girl’s tee, but not as unforgivingly snug as a cotton blend. It’s comfy, it’s casual, it’s funky. Wear with jeans to run errands; add a pair of rock-star stilettos and you are ready for a concert. Living in Los A

Moe Designs C.L.I.C.K. Wristlet - Just the Right Size
2007-04-23 09:13:36
I love a small handbag. For day-to-day use, I carry a large bag because there are a zillion things I need throughout the day: wallet, cell phone, sunglasses, iPod, hand cream, multiple lip glosses (to match every outfit and mood), business cards… who knows what else lurks in the dark recesses of my bag. So when it comes to an evening bag, I love a little clutch that forces me to pare down my totables. What I love even more than clutches are wristlets. The tiny cuteness of a clutch, with the added security of a strap. Of course, with my tiny wrists, a wristlet seems to turn into a shoulder bag. Enter the C.L.I.C.K. bag from Moe Designs . The acronym stands for Cell Phone, Lip Gloss, ID, Cash, and Keys - all the necessities for an evening out. And they all fit easily, without creating unsightly bulges. I can even fit my Sony CyberShot camera in the bag, which is about the size of a standard iPod. I never leave home without a camera - you never know when you are going to f

Funky Oysters SoMa Freshwater Pearl Necklace
2007-04-27 18:50:49
When I turned 18, my grandmother gave me a beautiful, expensive strand of cultured pearls. I thanked her profusely, but later whispered to my mom, “What am I going to do with these?” I was still young, still prided myself on being funky and weird, and still wore pajamas to early-morning classes. Pearl s, to me, felt old. My mother swore that one day I would appreciate them - she felt the same way when she got her first strand of pearls, but now loves them. Mom was right. A few years later, I really grew into the pearls. While my everyday style was still young, my evening wear was becoming classier. The pearls became the perfect accent to almost any outfit, and I became a pearl connoisseur. I ended up with a jewelry box full of different pearl necklaces. I was excited to discover Funky Oysters, a new online store that only opened a few weeks ago. Funky Oysters promises a wide variety of real, freshwater pearl jewelry at affordable prices. Estilo “Inhale” Fragrance - A Rich Floral Scent for Spring
2007-04-26 23:30:54
I am loving this new boutique-y fragrance by Estilo. Called &ldquo ;Inhale ,&rdquo ; it is a blend of lily of the valley and jasmine, with a light amber base. Since the fragrance has only three notes, it keeps things pure and uncomplicated. The florals are fresh and watery, and they are complimented nicely by the rich amber. No chemical notes here, and nothing that will induce a headache. It is a wonderful, fresh fragrance that is great for spring, but might be a little too heavy for summer. Estilo comes from the Portuguese word for “style.” And they encompass all areas of style - besides fragrance, they also design clothing and accessories with a European influence. At press time, the Estilo site was, sadly, under construction, so I have not had a chance to check out any of their designs. “Inhale” is only available via the Estilo website, and at select salons in New Jersey, so if you are looking for an exclusive signature scent that no one else will be wea

She Complete - Silk Headbands are a Modern Twist on a Classic Favorite
2007-04-26 00:06:04
Headbands seem to come and go through the fashion ages. I remember wearing wide, hideous lycra bands in a myriad of colors and patterns as a child. The chunky plastic headband had its revival, and gave way to slender, delicate evening headbands. We won’t even discuss those braided faux-hair headbands (I cannot be the only one who was scared of those). She Complete’s line of headbands is anything but scary. She Complete is a new-ish accessories company started by designer Karen Cooper. The goal was to create a line of well-made, luxurious accessories that blur the line between classic and modern; elegant and edgy. I remember trying to use a scarf as a headband - tied around my head, with the tails peeking out from the ends of my hair. The problem with that was that the scarf would slip within five minutes of being tied, and I would usually give up and take the scarf out within an hour. The Kitty headband offers that same look - without the struggle. The secret is th

Fusion Illusion’s Iridescent Fused Glass Pendant Has Sparked a New Obsession
2007-04-30 23:12:25
If you have been reading this site, you will know that I often become obsessed with certain looks or designers. Well, I have a new obsession: fused glass. I recently came across Fusion Illusion, a home-grown Los Angeles company. This is a husband-and-wife team, who, together with their daughter, work out of the family garage. Fused glass isn’t the same as hand-blown glass; not even close. Fusing glass is far more technical. I do not even pretend to understand the process, so I will steal this blurb from the Fusion Illusion website: Most of our work contains Dichroic glass, which produces the amazing effect of having multiple colors as they shift when held in direct light. The 30 layer coating is produced in a highly technical process using quartz crystal and metal oxides released in an airless vacuum chamber. Though the coating is only 35 millionths of an inch, it produces magnificent effects through combinations of reflected and transmitted color. Glass is then hand-cut
