2006-10-23 02:25:00
At my 10/6/06 3 hour employment law seminar for the Chicago Business Minority Development Council and Chicago Minority Business Opportunity Center's Corporate Bridges event, I provided participants with a 14 page handout which summarizes 55 federal, state (Illinois) and local (Chicago and Cook County) labor and employment laws. Additionally, my handout contains information concerning the probability of encountering an employment related agency complaint or lawsuit, the possible cost of such a complaint or lawsuit, what to ask and not to ask during a job interview, or on a job application, and a few other items. The following is page 4 of my handout. What's Appropriate to Ask Job Candidates ? Although there are only a few explicitly illegal questions that an employer should never ask a job applicant, there are many more questions which lead to the inference that the employer intended to illegally exclude (discriminate against) a member of a protected class. Update on Illinois' Employer Meeting and Communication Act
2006-06-15 05:13:00
My March 25, 2006, post concerned pending legislation in Illinois : Senate Bill 2446: The Employer Meeting and Communication Act (Act). This Act is sponsored by state Senator Gary Forby, a Democrat from south-central Illinois and Chairperson of the Senate's Labor Committee. In essence, the Act severely restricts an employer's ability to communicate with employees in the workplace and awards heavy penalties for convictions. Also, the Act is more restrictive than the federal National Labor Relations Act. I e-mailed Senator Forby my article and requested his reasons for sponsoring the Act and solicited feedback regarding my post, which is very critical of this bill. Well, I never heard from Senator Forby, and as of June 4, 2006, the Act was re-referred to the Senate's Rules Committee. As the Rules Committee is composed of 3 Democrats and 2 Republicans, it's difficult to say whether it will die or survive the Committee. However, as this law is bad for business, and even bad for employe

Tony represents companies that conduct employee screening, investigations and provide security related services. Integra is endorsed by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, and Tony is Vice Chair of their Public & Private Police Liaison committee. Also, Integra is the only security related company endorsed by the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce. The following article, "The Need to Pre-screen Your Pre-screening Vendor," was written by Tony and based on over 30-years of combined experience in developing, implementing and selling employee background screening to private/public corporations and governmental agencies nationwide. Flickr Photo Badge: People @ Work
2006-05-05 02:00:00
During the course of creating this website, I've had occasion to post photos in a series titled "People @ Work." The concept of this photo series is that my photos are the opposite of the generic pictures posted in most business websites and pamphlets. More specifically, instead of photos of models posing and pretending to be working, my photos are of real people, doing real work and they have real a connection to me. These photos date back to the early 1900s in Chicago , and are images of my relatives at their places of work. For example, my earliest photo dates back to circa 1903-09 and is a picture of my great-great grandfather in front of his butcher shop on Maxwell Street on Chicago's near west side. Other photos include my dad and me at work. Now, through Flickr 's photo badge, you can view an ever-changing collage of these photos and click on the images to view a larger image along with an explanation of what you're looking at, and what the photo means to me.

Illinois Senate Bill 2446: The Employer Meeting and Communication Act
2006-03-26 00:14:00
Currently awaiting a 3rd reading, the Employer Meeting and Communication Act (Act), is sponsored by State Senator Gary Forby. Senator Forby is a Democrat from south-central Illinois and Chairperson of the Senate 's Labor Committee. The Act was introduced on January 18, 2006. As it currently reads, the Act prohibits employers, including employer representatives or agents, "from requiring employees to attend an employer-sponsored meeting or participate in communications to communicate the employer's opinion about religious or political matters; [it] also prohibits discharging, disciplining, penalizing, or threatening an employee as a means of requiring an employee to attend such a meeting or participate in such communications or because the employee or a person acting on the employee's behalf makes a good faith report of a violation of the Act" "Political matters includes [sic] political party affiliation or the decision to join or not join any lawful political, social, or

Actually, I did notice one indivdidual began to drift off a little during the 2nd hour. Hope he caught up on some needed sleep. The 2nd photo is me pointing to something during a break at some February 2006 depositions. It kind of looks like I'm doing something really really important. Yesterday, February 24, 2006, the Chicago Tribune had an article on page 1 of the T empo section concerning blogging. Internet Critic Steve Johnson's article was based on this past Tuesday evening's Chicago Blogger's meeting at Columbia College downt own. In Steve's article , http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/ chi-0602240374feb24,1,736655.column , he mentions me and my blog and provides my blog's address. He also quotes me. Handout for My 2/22/06 Evanston/Northwestern SBDC Employment Law Seminar
2006-02-19 02:25:00
For my employment law seminar at Evanston/Northwestern 's Small Business Development Center (SBDC), I created a 6 page handout summarizing 44 federal and Illinois labor and employment laws small to medium sized businesses might encounter. The format of the handout is an MS Word table. But, tables don't convert to Blogspot. Consequently, instead of spending hours trying to convert the handout to Blogspot's interface and posting it here, I've decided that if any readers are interested in obtaining either an MS Word or PDF version of the handout, I'll e-mail it to you. So, if anyone would like a copy of this 6 page handout which summarizes 44 federal and Illinois labor and employment laws, I'd be glad to e-mail it you. Just e-mail me at (charlesakrugel@gmail.com) or post your request to my blog, and please specify whether you'd like a PDF or MS Word version (or both).

My photos are of real people, doing real work and they have real a connection to me. Here's a photo of my dad, Matthew Krugel, at work at his 1st store, Bel-Mar Drugs, on the south-east corner of Diversey and Laramie in Chicago 's Craigin Park neighborhood; 5200 W. Diversey. He had just owned this store for a few years when this picture was taken. The store was there until about 1978 when he moved it kitty-corner into a building about 3-times in size. He was a fixture in the neighborhood for about 35 years. The two customers with him are his aunt and uncle (my great-aunt and great-uncle) Sam and Sophie Davis from Los Angeles, CA. Uncle Sam was a bohemian or beatnik of sorts who, back in the 40's and 50's, took my dad and his cousins on cross country road trips. Often tim
