Red Fox 2008-09-19 10:38:18 Red Fox, Denali National Park, Alaska.
Janine says fox are “my animal” because I always seem to see them. I do have unusually good success with spotting these cool guys. If you are going to play favorites, fox seem like as good of an animal as any because they really are beautiful animals that are fun to [...] Read more:Red Fox
Bear Tundra 2008-09-17 18:58:28 A couple of Grizzly Bears feeding on the tundra, Denali National Park, Alaska.
The tundra is sure beautiful in autumn! The fall colors were past in most of Denali - this was by far the most colorful area left in the Park, and it had a couple of Grizzlies! Actually, one of them is the same [...] Read more:Tundra
Grizzly Bear 2008-09-16 20:19:10 Grizzly Bear, Denali National Park, Alaska.
Even though I was “safely” by my vehicle, I must admit, as I watched through the view finder and saw this guy turn and head down the hill towards us, my heart started racing. My camera tells me he was 35 meters away, but when he filled the viewfinder, it seemed [...] Read more:Grizzly

Lynx ! 2008-09-16 01:59:13 Wild Lynx, Denali National Park, Alaska.
Wow, what a trip this has been! But the highlight was this lynx - I have been trying unsuccessfully for many, many years to capture an image of a lynx, but a couple of hours ago that all changed.
It is late and I’m tired, so I will write more when [...]
Steller Sea Lions 2008-09-13 11:01:45 Steller Sea Lions
.
Yesterday we hit the road to spend a few days in Denali. It may be a few days until I can post again. Hopefully my next post will be of a wolverine! I think it is much more likely the next post will be a moose or hare!
Aialik Glacier 2008-09-12 07:00:26 Yesterday (Thursday) at Aialik Glacier, Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska.
There are a lot of great things about living in Seward, but number one has to be how close we are to Aialik Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park. The Travel Channel included this area when it did a two hour special on the 10 greatest wonders [...]
Stormy Weather 2008-09-11 07:00:40 Clouds in the mountains of the Chugach National Forest surrounding Seward, Alaska. This was last (Wednesday) night.
This is the first time I have seen the tops of the mountains in more than a week. I figure, if we are going to have stormy weather, it might as well be really stormy! And it has - we have been getting almost [...]
Camera Plates and L Brackets 2008-09-10 07:00:59
Pictured is a quick release clamp on the top of a BH-55 Ballhead.
Trying to attach your camera onto the threaded post you find on top of many tripods, is a slow, awkward process that will have you leaving your tripod in the car. By using a quick release clamp on your ballhead (pictured above), makes [...] Read more:Brackets

Bridge to Nowhere Photo 2008-09-09 12:08:38 Bridge to Nowhere
photo, Ketchikan, Alaska.
Last summer while I was in Ketchikan, I hiked up the hill above town to get a better perspective of the destination for the “Bridge to Nowhere”. I never did anything with this photo, once the funding was lost and the project fell out of the news, the image had little value. Now, thanks [...] Read more:Photo
More Fair Fun! 2008-09-05 12:10:01 Alaska State Fair, Palmer, Alaska.
Earlier this summer I started doing a series of lessons sharing what I know about outdoor and nature photography. Well, summer in Alaska kind of kept me distracted from working on more posts. With rain in the forecast for as far as I can see - this weekend may be a good [...]
Digital Camera Sensor Cleaning 2008-09-03 13:15:08
This was from last Saturday in the Chugach National Forest, about 12 miles from Seward, Alaska. I used two graduated neutral density filters - one on the mountain, the other for the reflection.
Sensor

Alaska State Fair 2008-09-02 11:00:14 Alaska State
Fair, Palmer Alaska.
I would like to say I was the first to come up with the idea for really long exposures and streaking lights, but I’m far from it. It is still a fun technique to play around with at a place like this!
Richard Wong with The Non-Clamorous Side of Photography recently interviewed [...] Read more:Alaska
Wasilla Alaska 2008-09-01 13:15:12 Finger Lake, Wasilla, Alaska
.
This was from Friday in Wasilla. We went up there for some photography, and to visit my parents and sister’s family. Ironically, Wasilla became famous on this same day when John McCain selected Sarah Palin for his running mate. I probably should have stuck around for some more photography of the area because it [...]
Puffin Photos 2008-08-29 07:00:11 Horned Puffin.
We have finished our updates to our website and have a new section of Puffin photos. Puffin rock! We have also updated our section of bear photos. Come to think of it, bears rock too!
In addition, we were able to migrate our all 4,970 pages of our website from the obsolete FrontPage to a [...]
Fishing Bears 2008-08-28 11:53:37 Bears aren’t the only ones to hit Silver Salmon Creek for fish - its just that the bears have the right of way! When the bears approach, the fishermen back out of the river and bunch up for safety. If you hook a fish and a bear shows up, you have to cut it loose.

Bears and Remotes 2008-08-27 11:53:46 Lake Clark National Park, Alaska.
If you have followed this photo blog much, you know I have spent a fair amount of time working the bears around Seward with a remote camera setup. Well, I thought that might provide some unique opportunities while at Lake Clark National Park, so I brought all my gear over there for [...] Read more:Bears
Alaska Coastal Bear Viewing 2008-08-26 12:48:29 Brown Bears, Lake Clark National Park, Alaska
.
I didn’t get a chance to finish writing about our Lake Clark trip, so I thought I would follow up today.
To be honest, we have always traveled on our own in Alaska, with either our camper or tent, so I had mixed feelings on visiting a lodge geared just towards bear [...] Read more:Coastal

I thought this floating express stand was pretty cool - I guess when you don’t have any roads, you have to get creative. Read more:Espresso
Visiting Halibut Cove 2008-08-22 14:08:44 M/V Danny J
Halibut Cove makes a perfect day or evening excursion from Homer, Alaska - this gives you a chance to eat lunch or dinner, and still have time to stroll the boardwalk and check out the art galleries.
To do this, you take the historic vessel the Danny J from Homer to Halibut Cove. This [...]
Halibut Cove, Alaska 2008-08-21 12:09:34 Halibut Cove, Alaska
.
How is this for a cool town - Halibut Cove has no roads; there is a 12 block long boardwalk, otherwise you use boats. The boardwalk provides access to one very nice restaurant, and two art galleries representing 14 local artists. In addition, the town has a floating espresso stand, and a few fancy lodges, and that is about it. How [...]
Colorado River 2008-10-09 07:01:24 Colorado River
near Moab, Utah.
This was about a half hour after sunset. To give you an idea as to how dark it was, this exposure was for 20 seconds at f/8. I did others of this scene at 30 seconds.
I couldn’t believe the rich colors the digital camera was able to capture in [...] Read more:Colorado
Turret Arch 2008-10-08 10:26:31 Turret Arch, Arches National Park, near Moab, Utah
Fortunately the road to the Widows Section was reopened yesterday, so we visited the area last night. I liked the graphical nature of this scene. This is looking at a portion of the South Window arch through Turret Arch.
Courthouse Towers, Arches National Park, Utah 2008-10-07 14:36:43 Courthouse Towers

We were on our way to the Windows Section of Arches National Park early this morning. Unfortunately, the area was closed for road work. I understand it opens this afternoon.
So we decided to head back towards the Courthouse Towers to look for opportunities. I [...] Read more:Courthouse
Red Rock, Wet Rock 2008-10-06 21:41:33 Moab area waterfall
While we were driving around scouting today, I saw what appeared to be waterfall in the desert, coming out of the hills way across the valley. I pulled over and got out the binoculars - sure enough, it was a waterfall! What a treat!
I understand this is somewhat man made thanks [...]
Dead Horse State Park, near Moab, Utah 2008-10-05 14:11:49 Dead Horse
Point, Dead Horse State
Park, near Moab, Utah
It was very cloudy and stormy this morning, but just a small bit of sun broke through the thick clouds and illuminated the tree I had in my foreground! It wasn’t the amazing sunrise I had envisioned in my head, but still pretty nice. Read more:Dead Horse

Off to Utah! 2008-09-28 11:15:10 Dead Horse State Park, Utah
This is an older photo, but I wanted to do a quick post for a couple of reasons. First, just to say I may not post anything for a few days because we will be traveling. But more importantly, I just did a long over due update to my [...]
Sunset Magazine 2008-09-25 18:22:31 Sunset Magazine
cover, October, 2008.
This just arrived in the mail a few minutes ago, and I gotta admit, it is a really cool to have the cover of a magazine like Sunset!
We had two Zion images being considered as finalist for this cover, the other one was this image of Temple of Sinawava in Zion. That photo ended [...] Read more:Sunset
Travel Plans 2008-09-24 12:13:35 Another Grizzly Bear from last week in Denali National Park, Alaska.
We have taken a few short, 3 to 4 day trips over the last 5 months, but by in large, we have been home working in the office. After two years with a pretty heavy travel schedule in which we spent at least 200 nights [...] Read more:Travel
Fall Reflections 2008-09-23 12:14:05 Fall tundra colors reflecting in a pond, Denali National Park, Alaska.
I don’t know if this really “works”, but I kinda like it. At first, I focused on the surface of the lake, but I didn’t care for the results. I then tried focusing on the reflected image and not the surface - this created more of [...] Read more:Reflections
