A subject that live spaces won't allow past the filter.
2007-03-26 15:56:13
It's a topic that comes up a lot when people want to point fingers, but admitting that it haunts you rarely comes to mind.   Porn decided whether or not VHS or Beta would be the videotape format of choice.  Porn is currently deciding whether or not BluRay or HD-DVD will be the next media of choice after DVDs die.  Read some information about the pornography industry on Shelley Lubben's site.  It's a horrible horrible thing to get caught up in and has much more power than you would think, both in our civilization and in our hearts.   I have a problem with porn.  It isn't something I seek out anymore, but it still gnaws at my brain and constantly tempts me.  "Come on, nobody cares.  Just a few naked pictures - what's the harm?"   I love my wife.  I want to be a good example to my sons.  Porn, just like drugs, alcohol, and tobacco, is an addiction.  I want to live a life that pleases God.  THAT's the harm.  I kept it secret, but covering up a secret really e

A is for...Arrogance
2007-02-28 19:03:51
I thought I would post about different issues or sins and maybe it would be best to address what I personally have dealt with.  The first of these is arrogance. This is something that I struggle with constantly.  It can take many forms. Judging others.  Most of us (I think) do it.  I will pride myself on how much better I am than someone else.  I can also look at someone who seems to have their life together and I will go out of my way to find a chink in their armor.  "He's having problems in his marriage?  Well, mine is perfect."  "She may earn more than me, but at least I have some dignity in my job."  "I'm better looking than him."  "I can draw better than that."  "Yeah, I could draw that, too, if I had the right tools and the education."  "She may have a better car than mine, but her daddy probably bought it for her.  I paid for mine."  Who am I to point out someone else's faults?  I can dish out the

Dad, where are we going?
2007-01-29 18:51:15
Monday, January 29, 2007   I've been thinking over the past week or so about where I need to go with what I'm doing and what I want to share with people.    When I started the comic, I wanted to do something that would potentially put a little more food on the table.  I didn't know how to write a story and I had let a lot of my drawing talent get rusty, getting unused due to life and "more important things".  I knew that I needed to use that talent that God had given me.  I'm not a great artist, but I've been drawing as a hobby for as long as I can remember, and I've always gotten praise by classmates, teachers, and friends.    With my job and our decision for Julie be a stay-at-home mom, money is very tight.  I needed to do something more to provide for our family.  I looked for other jobs in the field I'm in.  But I wouldn't get a response, I'd be told they found someone more qualified, or I would find out that I would be in a job that would be a

An Interesting Day
2007-01-29 17:53:03
Monday, January 29, 2007   Saturday night I couldn't sleep until around 3:30 or 4 am.  I stayed up watching bad television and drawing a little.  The next morning we didn't wake up until 8, an hour and 15 minutes before "sunday school" (we read a book and try to learn how God wants us to live; right now we're doing "Facing Your Giants" by Max Lucado—so far pretty awesome).  I try to rush to get the boys fed and dressed and myself ready so that Julie can focus on what she needs to do.  I'm getting pretty angry because things aren't going as planned (as they often don't go as planned).  I'm yelling about everything so that we can be on time to church so that we can learn how to love each other.   We get in the car, I apologize and tell Julie that I hate being late, and we get to church.  When we get there, late, we see that class hadn't even started yet.  Actually, everyone is still waiting around in the vestibule.  We take the boys to Sunday

If you haven't been there yet, I'm starting to add some of my paintings and drawings onto my page over at Webcomics Nation.  Link is here.   Also, my church has a book store, Lighthouse Books and Gifts on abebooks.com.  Some new but mostly used, but there are lots of good deals.  Many books for only a buck!   Finally, if you like where "One of a Hundred" is headed, please pray for its success.  On the other hand, if you feel that it's terrible and I don't know what I'm doing, please pray for me that God would give me insight and wisdom to do it well for His Glory.    If you think, "Eh, I could take it or leave it.", then please return to your regularly scheduled day and forget I said anything.   Thank you for your time.

2007-01-11 18:47:19
I'm now posting on Webcomics Nation as well as here.  I will still post here, but the images will be a bit larger and (hopefully) more organized.  In addition to still using this (live space) for updates, I will use this also for a sounding board and whatever it is I'm supposed to use a blog for.    But, if I start to ramble on about myself (in ways that no one else can possibly care about) or publish some horrible poetry about how nobody understands me, then I give you all permission to reprimand me by way of comments or hotmail.  Nobody should have to put up with that, especially you.  My family knows me, they can deal.   So, my new site is: http://www.webcomicsnation.com/marcjoyce/   Thank you for your time, you've been a great audience.  No, seriously, I mean it.  Remember to tip your waitress and try the special, which I believe is pigs in a blanket tonight.  Good night!   PS-- A big thanks to Dean for his great input about Webcomics Nation for me to want to go the

Aw, now you're gonna make me cry
2007-04-19 00:20:54
A few of the movies that always tend to get me a little weepy toward the ending are: -My Dog Skip-The Iron Giant-What Dreams May Come-Veggie Tales:  A Snoodle's Tale-She's Having a Baby This last one is partially due to Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work" played over the montage.  It's so haunting and her vocals are amazing, you can feel the emotion of the moment.  So, while surfing around watching some old Billy Joel videos, I happened across her video for the song.  I'm definitely old enough to have seen it when it came out, but I haven't until now.  So now, I don't know which is more heart-wrenching, the montage or the video.

Life Means So Much - part I
2007-05-01 07:04:30
I had started writing this two weeks ago, and because of my work schedule, my rush to get 3 pages done in a week's time, and other factors, I didn't get it here.  This might be long, so I'm going to cut it up into 2 parts. The comic is starting to focus on a topic that means a lot to me.  If fact, that topic, suicide, took control of me for at least ten years of my life, but lingered around for another ten or so. It started in 7th grade, when I was 12.  Junior high is kind of a horrible time for a lot of us.  For some reason, it separates us and defines where we belong in the heirarchy of the class.  Your friends from before might not be your friends now.  You are no longer just a bunch of kids, you are jocks, nerds, popular, weird, and any number of distinctions.  It is a time when you move from grade school to something slightly more "mature".  You don't have the same teacher for almost every class and organized sports and competitions are introduced.

Sidney & Norman
2007-05-08 07:52:38
Sidney & Norman   I love this book.  This is not only my favorite children's book, but maybe my favorite book as well.    Phil Vischer, the creator of VeggieTales and head of Jellyfish, wrote this amazing tale with supercool illustrations by Justin Gerard.   The book is the story of two pigs who live next door to each other.  Norman is a pig who always seems to get everything right and finds it easy to adhere to the rules.  Things come harder for Sidney, who always looks down on himself.  One day, they both get an invitation from God.   This is a book filled with love, love, love, and more self worth than you can shake a stick at.  I highly recommend it and I might even read it to you if we meet.  (well, if you want me to!)

Life Means So Much - part II
2007-05-08 07:23:39
Okay, now for the rest. I joined the Navy, and I was kept busy for the most part.   When I got out and got a job in the real world, I was still running on full speed.  My new way of looking at things (as I had learned) was to just keep myself busy or totally ignore anything bad.  If it wasn't positive, I forgot about it.  This kept me alive and sane. I met my wife at that job (Kinko's) and things were going swell, except for a few big problems we faced.  One was religion.  She's a Christian and I was against any of that.  It was okay for her as long as she left me out of it.  I found out soon enough that God was a HUGE part of her life. Another was the way we dealt with things, or were forced to deal with things.  My comfort zone restricted me to not talking to anyone I didn't know.  I got nervous on the phone and I was just fine where I was, in my own little bubble.  Because of this, Julie was forced to do everything, from calling contractors to dealing with

Thank You!

Sometimes we get so caught up in ourselves and things outside of us that we just stress out and become flustered over the smallest things.  I've been doing that, so I thought I would take the time to give appreciation to all the people and who have been a blessing to me (in no particular order). Julie, the wife - for always being there for me and encouraging my projects. My two boys - who love me and can't wait to see me when I come home from work. My mom - she raised me and worked her fingers raw (literally) to make a better life for us. My stepdad, John - for being a father to me when he didn't have to be. My father - I haven't seen him for many many years, but he gave me part of his genetic makeup, and he still is my father. My siblings - for putting up with me and helping to shape me. Ron - for taking care of Mom. Grandma - for showing me that we don't have to slow down as we get older. My in-laws - for being the coolest group of people I have ever met. Joe Christ

We've Got a Site!
2007-08-28 23:18:46
My wife and I have officially launched our website, bugskippy.com. You may be asking yourself something profound like:  What's on the site?  What's it all about?  Well, it features "One of a Hundred" and any other comics I will come up with and daily articles (monday - friday?).  We also plan to create animations, short stories, movie reviews, and stuff.  We're only a few days in, so the variety will come.  There is also a forum.  The site will primarily be Christian, but we want to sneak in some other stuff, too.  We want it to eventually be a fun, family friendly media extravaganza, complete with clowns and acrobats! The comic will still be featured here as well as at Webcomics Nation and will still be updated on wednesdays. Disclaimer:  we may or may not be able to procure clowns and acrobats.

Televangelists in the Mist
2007-10-19 00:52:01
I've been thinking a lot today about televangelists. Not the straight talking guys like Billy Graham, but the plastic-faced gilded personalities I remember from my formative years. The ones who were one of the factors that made me distrust Christians and see the whole thing as phony and self-serving. Ah, good times! There were (and still are) evangelists who preach from the heart and honestly believe in all they are doing. I don't mean them. The camp of hooligans I think of can only be described as fake. There seemed to be similar traits on a lot of these programs: The people seemed to use more Aquanet than your average metal band in 1987. My friend, Steve, always used to say, "The higher the hair, the closer to God." The men wore thousand dollar suits with huge rings on most fingers. The women looked like a mass of hair with make-up that was applied with a salad shooter. If you want to read the rest of it, follow this link. (It won't actually publish until after 1 am C
