A Place of Rest
2007-12-25 23:54:41
How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young- a place near your altar, O LORD Almighty, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you. - Psalm 84:1-4 Over the last few days, after crossing the state for Christmas visits, as is the case whenever we travel, we were glad to come home to sleep in our own bed. Our bed is by no means the best model nor our mattress or box spring the newest and most luxurious, but the bed is ours and that in itself makes it the very best. If you want to read the rest of it, follow this link.

Can I Have Tattoos and still be a Christian? - A Personal Journey
2008-03-14 09:49:21
I went and got my first tattoo at around the age of 20, I think. I didn’t want something that would show, so I had a dragon’s head done on my hip. It was kind of a nightmare, really. The artist was a real jerk and had the attitude of “pick something or get out, I’ve got more important things to do”. It is just a heavy outline with no shading and no color. To top it all off, he charged me far more than what it was worth. (I found that out later when I got my others done.) Fast forward to the age of 25 and I’m in the Navy. I wanted more ink, so I went to the best place around in San Diego: Master Tattoo. I now have a grim reaper smoking a cigarette on my left forearm and (months later) a gauntlet made up of multicolored holes on the right. During one of those sessions in San D

Review: Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy
2008-04-17 01:09:37
Last weekend, when the boys and I went to Super Target for a little shopping excursion to get flowers and spend my birthday money, I wanted to get a new videogame. I don't get the chance to play games much anymore, but when I do, I really get into it. So I couldn't just get any game. It had to be something to hold my interest, have tons to do, and something I feel comfortable having around the kids. I also don't have a lot of spending cash, so I made the decision a few years ago never to buy the latest thing. For systems, I will wait until they are at least a few years old and fairly inexpensive or used. This helps not only to save money, but also to steer clear of the always buggy launch titles. As far as games, I first check the "Greatest Hits" or "Player's Choice"

Honesty is Such a Lonely Word
2008-04-17 01:03:19
I must admit to you, I have been guilty of telling a fib or five in my life. I am not proud of it. With age and maturity, I have found I don't think I do anything that I would need to lie about, and I have nothing to lose by telling the truth. In fact I have much to gain. In any relationship (marriage, business, friendships, etc.), honesty is one of the most important traits to have. With honesty, you might not always get admiration, but you do get respect for your truthfulness and a clearer conscience. If you want to read the rest of it, click here.

New Store Designs - The Wedgehead Collection
2008-04-17 00:57:18
We've got a few new designs in our store! I used to draw these characters all the time and would make one-of-a-kind t-shirts for friends by drawing them right on the shirts with a Sharpie marker. (If you plan on doing that, be prepared to soak the shirt in vinegar and wash it a few times because a yellow "halo" will appear around the image.) But now I've come back to drawing them again but on a more accessible and less frustrating scale. These are what I have now with more coming:

Doing Your Best at...Whatever You Do
2008-04-17 00:53:49
Yesterday I was looking through Sermonaudio.com looking for stuff on hypocrisy within the church. One of the sermons I listened to (by Dr. John Whitcomb) featured as examples the stories of Barnabas, Ananias, and Sapphira from Acts 4:32 - 5:1-10 and Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu from Leviticus 10. While they are excellent examples of hypocrisy, I was thinking of kind of a side topic besides just that main one: Simply putting forth your best. Ananias and Sapphira, when they sold their land, had every right to keep some of the money for themselves. But their sin lies in their deception by making it seem like they gave all for the community. They wanted to get full credit for a half-assed attempt. The church was new and an example had to be made of them: zero tolerance for lies and deception

The Berenstain Bears and the Big Question
2008-04-24 02:34:03
Before I get into this, you should know something. Our sons love the Berenstain Bears . They have about ten or so books, and we go to the library quite often to check more out, sometimes the same ones two or three times. When I was a young'un I remember reading Old Hat New Hat and ranked it up there with the great literary classics. You could say our family has a history (book-wise) with the Bears. Also, both Julie and I have great respect for Stan and Jan Berenstain, and their son Mike. They have had great success for many many years with hundreds of books published (252!). They have covered just about any topic under the sun from strangers to television to Santa Claus to doctor visits. There are two things that make us cringe about the Bears, though. If you want to read the rest of it,

“…Burnt Offerings That Cost Me Nothing.”
2008-04-24 02:32:17
Unless you have lived a sheltered and privileged life, you are familiar with sacrifices. I’m not talking about something burning on an altar or anything like that, but just willing to risk something worthwhile for something better. Some people have to give up time with their family in order to work to give them a decent home and food. Some have to make the choice to give over their children to someone who can give them a better life. Maybe you have to sacrifice a much needed day off in order to make some overtime. Maybe it’s missing out on overtime for some much needed time with your spouse. Maybe your sacrifice is a kidney so that someone else can live. Whatever it is, it’s not a sacrifice unless there is something to lose. If you want to read the rest of it, click here.

Phantom from Space
2008-04-30 23:18:25
It's been a while since my last bad movie review on Zontar, the Thing from Venus, so I'm long overdue for wasting hours of time. This time we've got Phantom from Space , a nice little film from 1953, produced and directed by W. Lee Wilder, the brother of Billy Wilder but creator of such epics as Killers from Space and Manfish. This movie is also part of my SciFi Classics 50 Movie Pack. Of all the movies I could have picked to review, I think this could have been the biggest mistake. I chose it more for the length rather than synopsis on the package - 73 minutes. It starts out with the narrator giving us some exposition of a UFO appearing over Alaska, then making its way to Santa Monica, California, while we are shown stock film clips until the real story starts. The object is being tracke

On the Sudden Outbreak of Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease
2008-05-08 00:30:47
Whenever a child suffers needlessly, I really get shaken up, as I hope anyone does. Whenever I hear of a child being abused, neglected, exploited, or murdered, I can't help feeling extreme anger toward the person(s) responsible. Then I immediately start feeling heartbroken and sad for the child who was subjected to whatever hell they were put through. It's a consuming need to hug that child and hug my own, and then let them know they are loved. Disease and sickness can't always be blamed on a person, so there is just the yearning without the anger. The strange outbreaks in China and Vietnam of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) primarily caused by the EV71, Coxsackie A16, and Echo viruses are no exception. Men's Camp 2008 - Showdown with the Devil
2008-05-08 00:27:15
A good friend invited me and our oldest son to his men's ministry campout. At first I was a little leery because I really don't like intruding on someone else's get-together and I also hate meeting new people. I don't relate well at first and usually stay to myself. But Julie encouraged me to go because I really needed a good quality Christian experience for just men. She's had Women of Faith and Joyfest for that recharge of camaraderie. But Promise Keepers hasn't had very many conferences the last few years (the closest has been around 700 miles away), and it's difficult to find a good source for just men. Getting men to do anything together is a chore, let alone for ministry. I discovered I really needed time to connect with God away from my usual life and to reconnect with other men on

He did what was right, but...
2008-05-22 00:18:39
If you've ever read through 1 and 2 Kings, a really common theme shows itself: either the rulers did what was right, did evil, or did what was right with a "however" attached. When Julie and I had read it together, we had high hopes and they were shattered every time we read, "He did evil in the eyes of the Lord", cheered at the good ones, and groaned at the third. These were

Nacho Typical Talent Show
2008-05-22 00:13:07
This last Sunday morning, for services we went to the same church we were at the week before, Faith Bible Church. I think we'll try out going to the same church at least twice before making a judgment because they may have had a bad day (or a particularly good day) on our first visit. We like it, but when the buffet opens up, you have to try everything. But on Sunday night, we found ourselves bac

The Navy Adventure
2008-05-22 00:09:27
From 1992 until 1996 I was enlisted in the United States Navy. When I signed up, I was a college dropout living in an apartment above a bar in Des Moines, working at Target as a cart wrangler/carryout dude/mop boy. I drank at the bar almost every night, ate whatever I could afford, and smoked like a chimney. I needed a change and I needed discipline. When I told my friends and my girlfriend I had

Because You Demanded It - a post about deception
2008-05-28 23:38:08
In this very special blog post, we will reveal everything: every dirty little secret, every lie, every deception, and the betrayals that really torque us off. We never thought it would happen to us, or that it would eventually come to this. We are simple people pushed to the edge. We thought we could handle anything, but this time they've gone too far. Today we will air it all out. Why? Because y
