Texture 2008-09-16 09:34:56 I read a fascinating post today on Strangeharvest about surfaces and how modern design has all but obliterated texture from our architectural vocabulary. I think that a similarity can be drawn to the monotony of the suburb. We have tried to scrub from view the differences between us. It’s as though we view ourselves as [...] Read more:Texture
William Mcdonough 2008-09-15 16:54:01 Check out how many people came to hear him speak today! I am bad at guessing but I bet there are 1500 people here. Read more:William
Chapter 1 2008-09-14 09:26:16 Ok. This happened really fast. It’s amazing when you have something waiting to come out of you how easy it is. I am putting this up here in its raw form. I only skimmed through it to look for typos and it will be edited many times before making it into the book but I [...] Read more:Chapter
The More The Better…Bikes That Is. 2008-09-13 09:11:33 Thanks Dustin for sending this great article about the safety in numbers for bicyclists.
Also… that reminds me. Every year West Sacramento does this really neat event on the waterfront called the Neighbors fair. It starts with a good old hometown parade and then moves over to the Riverwalk park across from old Sac and there [...]
Air Powered Car 2008-09-12 10:11:22 I am intrigued, just the thought that this car might actually be for real makes me excited. If the stated 125 mile range is for real and $2 re-fueling, then this thing could change everything….You can read more here.
No title 2008-09-11 09:27:38 I cant find who wrote this but its a great quote.
IF…..
IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, [...]
Writing Today 2008-09-11 08:28:41 I got up early this morning to write and the chapter I am working on is about community and the different ways we all engage with it in our lives. I looked up the word and found a definition I like.
Community; a group of interdependent organisms inhabiting the same region and interacting with each other.
I [...] Read more:Today
Movie Night 2008-09-10 09:14:28 I keep thinking…what good is all this talk about community without a good movie night now and again?!? So we are getting together with the good folks over at USGBC and hosting a movie night here are the Green Living Center (20th and H in Midtown Sacramento).
After the film, the film’s producer, Maria Terezinha Vaz [...] Read more:Night
There Is Still Hope For The Urban Gardens 2008-09-09 19:01:25 A while back we did a post about urban temporary gardens. Now head over and check out the post today on the Oak Park Now site. I love when ideas like this take off and run on their own! Read more:Gardens

There Is Going To Be A Book (but Not Without You…) 2008-09-08 09:20:46 I was not sure if I wanted to get on the blog here and start talking about this project until I was further along but I am beginning to think that the benefits of including everyone in the process outweigh the risk of humiliation if this thing were never to get published.
Its a tough thing [...] Read more:Going
A Little About Good 2008-09-06 16:44:10 We try not to write to much about us and our project here. We just don’t think we are all that interesting but I keep getting emails this week asking for an update on the Good project. So here goes.
The project has a total of 35 homes in it and today are about 2 weeks [...]
Giving Up 2008-09-05 19:03:20 Often I hear people say that you should never give up. I could not agree more. However I think it’s worth looking at why people give up. In reality many times we give up not because we did not have the fight in us to keep going but because we picked a fight that was [...] Read more:Giving
Land Use Mistakes 2008-09-04 18:36:39 I know there are a lot of people who disagree with me but I think that 30 foot green space setback next to roads with walls separating the houses like this one in Folsom is just plain stupid. Space that could be an active participant in the community instead makes roads feel empty and [...]
The Grid 2008-09-04 10:55:41 We got this article from a friend and I thought it was worth sharing as I really dig the energy stuff. This shows how valuable localized power nodes and onsite generation will be in the future. I disagree with Suedeen Kelly when she says “We need an interstate transmission superhighway system” because I think it [...]
You’re Invited 2008-09-03 09:41:43 Recently we posted the first in a series called Open Mic. The way we see it blogs and the Internet are increasingly replacing newspapers as the place people go for their daily drip of information, and we see our blog as just one of your stops along the way as you seek to learn more [...]
Open House 2008-10-04 14:33:21 If you are sitting at home wondering what do today I have just the thing for you.
Micah is doing a construction tour of the Good project starting at 12:30. (but you can come later if you want.)
It’s a good way to get a behind the sceen look at how sustainable homes are built. [...] Read more:House
No title 2008-10-04 08:53:34 I get up every morning to write before the rest of my family to write some on my book. I find that mornings are my most creative times of day. But lately I am running into a wall and I want to see if you can help out.
I need some stories and ideas to help [...]
This Makes Me Feel Good 2008-10-03 15:35:21 While making breakfast for the kids this morning I noticed a few guys sitting in the park. They had kids with them are were making good use of the space just the way we intended it to be.
Its so good to see that the space is really getting used the way we dreamed it could. [...]

Its a place for us to talk about fun things coming up that you wont want to miss. Some of them are going to be open house days and project planning sessions but we also are going to be posting on [...] Read more:Urban
The Two Buttons You Need 2008-10-02 08:37:09 I don’t know how many of you have discovered Google Reader yet. If you have not you really should.
See those two buttons at the top of my little picture there? Well they are the coolest thing going on the internet right now. The subscribe button is for every time I get to a blog that [...] Read more:Buttons
Do Some Good Now? 2008-10-01 09:52:16 This is great. It makes me want to invent something really helpful for humanity.
To help celebrate its 10th birthday, Google, the ambitious Internet giant is launching Project 10^100 (pronounced “10 to the 100th”). If you got an idea that could change the world, Google will pay you $10 million to bring your idea into the [...]
The No Internet Handicap 2008-09-30 09:32:05 First off I want to say that this community is really cool. I posted on here a picture of my moving truck and within 20 minutes got a call asking if we needed any help moving. And if you have moved recently enough to remember how lame it is you know that whenever anyone calls [...] Read more:Internet
Heading The Wrong Direction 2008-09-29 09:17:41 This was pulled from the latest Census statistics. (Thanks to Phillip Reese from the Bee)
Watching the burbs grow as they have is kind of like watching everyone head into a restaurant that you know serves really bad food that will make them all sick, they are all excited about it, but have no idea what [...] Read more:Direction

Bike Corrals 2008-09-28 09:40:04 Cool approach to providing more room on sidewalks and less on roads. I really think Sacramento could install a couple of these in key locations and probably really enhance the foot traffic in front of some retail. In fact our parking day location on 20th and J was a perfect spot for one of these.

What A Day 2008-09-27 23:09:56 So much to write about but so little brain power to write with.
We are moved in finally and we succeeded in making a great big mess out of a brand new house already. The living room is full of boxes and misplaced furniture and all we can do is sleep.
Tomorrow is another day and hopefully [...]
Chapter 1 (redone) 2008-09-27 09:27:18 I have to keep saying this in case there is anyone out there that would think that I am posting a finished work here. The things I am posting from the ongoing book project are raw and totally unedited. They are not in any way finished or even close to being grammatically correct. I put [...] Read more:Chapter
Big Week 2008-09-27 00:53:29 It’s almost midnight as I lay here in bed with my mind spinning. The mattress sits on the floor as the bedframe is leaning against the wall in the hall awaiting the move tomorrow. So many things to do to get my family and all our 9 years worth of stuff across town into our [...]
Make Your Own Dirt 2008-09-26 09:37:54 You may have gotten the email but I wanted to post this here as well, just to make sure everyone has a chance to go make some dirt.
A while back we posted about the Naturemill Kitchen compost units that we are putting in each of our homes. I brought one home and tried it out [...]
Interesting 2008-09-25 08:44:49 Robert from Shiny Object sent me over a link this morning for a movie that looks really neat. From the sound of things in the description the battles they have to fight are very close to home for us here at LJ Urban. Its called the Greening of Southie. Check it out.
