A New Adaption to a Childhood Favorite
2007-04-02 16:51:32
Masterpiece Theatre’s Wind in the Willows–Mole, Water Rat, Badger and Mr. Toad pursue their merry adventures in a charming adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s magical tale of animals who behave like Edwardian country gentlemen in a world gone slightly mad. This presentation, the first Masterpiece Theatre production presented in high-definition, dispenses with animation and relies instead on the striking animal instincts of some very talented actors. Which is only proper, since Grahame’s story features animals acting like people. Airs: April 8, 2007 @ 9 pm on WCVE Richmond PBS and WHTJ Charlottesville PBS DVS TV-G

The Community Idea Stations and St. John’s Church Foundation partner to film documentary
2007-03-15 21:58:51
Film to showcase famous “Liberty or Death” speech When England taxed the American colonies to pay for the French and Indian war, the colonies became enraged and ardently resisted. What was at stake was the right of the colonists to govern and tax themselves instead of adhering to Britain’s absolute authority over its empire. In Virginia, Patrick Henry brought the issue to the forefront. His impassioned and eloquent speeches rattled complacent gentry, stirred others to the cause and resonated throughout the colonies. The Community Idea Stations and St. John’s Church Foundation have partnered to recreate Patrick Henry’s famous words in LIBERTY OR DEATH. The program will air Monday, March 26 at 9 pm on WCVE Richmond PBS/WHTJ Charlottesville PBS. This one-hour documentary was filmed Saint John’s Church in Richmond, Virginia, the very place the speech was given during the 2nd Virginia Convention of 1775. April is Jazz Appreciation Month
2007-04-10 17:00:32
One of the reasons that jazz needs an appreciation month is that the audience is so small. Peter Solomon (88.9 WCVE/89.1 WCNV) reports on why, for Richmond jazz musician Brian Jones, audience is not the most important consideration. It’s a recent Sunday night at Richmond’s cafe Gutenberg. Two bands have already performed and drummer Brian Jones is anxious to start playing. It’s the first gig in two years for his experimental electro-acoustic trio “Mao Amore.” For 32 minutes, Brian and saxophonist JC Kuhl react to the unpredictable music of Marty McCavitt. McCavitt has exposed the inner workings of a flat compact keyboard instrument called a pianette. With a piece of weather stripping and a small amp, he uses the pianette to create sonic textures worthy of a science fiction film. The packed audience in Cafe Gutenberg sits in rapt attention. Brian’s ability to react quickly is impressive. He says he has to concentrate especially hard to pull off this kind 0f free im

Unlocking the Mystery
2007-04-25 17:01:45
For more than half a millennium, a system of mass terror reigned in Europe. Thousands were subjected to secret courts, torture and punishment as the Catholic Church sought to suppress heresy and religious dissent. Every detail of this notorious Inquisition was documented in church files. In 1998, more than 700 years after the Inquisition began, the Vatican granted access to its Inquisition archives. Drawing on these documents and on historical research, SECRET FILES OF THE INQUISITION presents an unprecedented look at one of the darkest chapters in Christianity’s history. Filmed in high definition, the four episodes span medieval France, 15th-century Spain, Renaissance Italy and mid-19th-century Europe. The program reveals how the most powerful church on earth created the Inquisition to attack its enemies and preserve the unquestioned authority of the pope. Historians, experts and church authorities advise on the handling of this controversial subject matter. AIRS: Wednesday, May 9

“Rising Up,” a view of the lives and events that shaped the Civil Rights Movement in Virginia
2007-05-29 09:36:07
Rising Up,” a one-hour film, offers a groundbreaking view of the lives and events that shaped the Civil Rights Movement in Virginia . The project began in January 2007 as a collaborative effort between Professor Will Thomas’ class, “Documenting the Civil Rights Era,” and Professor Bill Reifenberger’s Advanced Media Studies course. Funded with a $2,000 award from the U.Va. Alumni Association’s Ernest C. Mead Endowment, the project was never meant to be a lavish Hollywood production. What mattered, Thomas said, was having “the opportunity to work very closely with students on a large-scale project in which they are all involved.” The students formed what Reifenberger calls “a dream team.” Some came to the project with archival research experience while others had worked with digital video cameras and editing software. Despite this wealth of talent, the group’s goal was unnervingly ambitious: to create a broadcast-quality documentary on the history of Virginia’s

AMERICAN MASTERS “John James Audubon: Drawn From Nature”
2007-06-29 09:57:49
A program that reveals the complex life of a driven artist and the pioneering work that helped define a young nation - AMERICAN MASTERS “John James Audubon: Drawn From Nature.” John James Audubon - whose name became synonymous with American conservation - killed thousands of birds during his quest to create Birds of America, arguably the largest and most beautiful book of the 19th century. Audubon was at once entrepreneur, artist, scientist, husband, father, legend - and walking contradiction. Born in what is now Haiti, the illegitimate son of a French plantation owner and his mistress, Audubon ultimately became the quintessential American pioneer. On the frontier, he played the debonair European. In the drawing rooms of Europe, he acted the part of wild woodsman. Although faithful to his long-suffering wife, he nonetheless wrote her lengthy letters bursting with details of his encounters with other women. Jailed once for bankruptcy, he went on to dine at the White House. The self-

A Look at the Life and Art of Allan Houser
2007-07-15 00:35:13
Born as Allan C. Haozous, this artist was to become known as Allan Houser, one of the 20th Century’s most important artists. Allan’s father was with the small band of Warm Springs Chiricahuas when their leader, Geronimo, surrendered to the U.S. Army in 1886 in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua. At an early age Allan became interested in Apache traditions and cultural life, which he celebrated in his life’s work. In 1934 a notice for an art school in Santa Fe attracted his attention, and he enrolled in the Painting School at the Santa Fe Indian School. Commonly known as the Dorothy Dunn School after its prominent teacher, Allan became its most famous student and by 1939 his work was exhibited in San Francisco, Washington D. C., and Chicago. In the same year he received a commission to paint a mural in the Department of Interior building in Washington, and its success led to a second mural commission there in 1940.
