The Revolver firepit.
2007-03-06 15:53:04
Possibly the best looking firepit I've seen so far. I like clean straight designs. Design that's above and beyond mere decoration. From Bodie & Fou and it's GBP 219:- (approx. USD 412:-). Who said beauty came cheap?

Sugar lump holder.
2007-03-06 15:53:00
Ever thought the sugar lumps in the sugar bowl looked awfully disorganised? Thought so. Here's the answer. The Sugar Lump Holder arranges the sugar lumps in neat rows, three by three, nine in all. There's nothing random here. Everything very tidy. In order. There must be order. If not, there's chaos. Anarchy even. That's bad. Order is good. Ordnung. Straight ranks and everybody accounted for. The SLH is designed by Kathleen Hills (funny, we thought there must be a German involved somewhere) and available at Bodie & Fou for a measly GBP 15:- (that's about USD 28:- for eveybody across the pond). Comes with Tate & Lyle sugar lumps pre-installed. PS. Browsing further I found these beautiful tounge-in-cheek concrete candlesticks by one of my favourite designers, Tove Adman, on the Bodie & Fou website.

Wrap around door free shower stall.
2007-03-06 15:52:56
This would look very cool. But, like everything cool, it needs space. It would probably not look very nice in a cramped corner of the bathroom. It requires a bit of room, preferably you should be able to walk around it. Matt finish acrylic screen and Exmar composite made from resin and quartz powder in white satin or sand finish, left or right-handed access. It is called the Chiocciola shower and it is available from Moss at USD 12,470:- a piece. You really gotta love showering...

NON indoor/outdoor rubber chair.
2007-03-06 15:52:51
I have managed to get some money together and bought a couple of these cool chairs. Black. Rubber over a steel core. Straight, simple and stackable. The Non chair has won numerous design awards and is featured in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. The chairs are completely waterproof and can be left outside. They are available in black, gray, red, and green, and were designed by Danish Komplot Design for Källemo, Sweden. USD 590:- on, among other places, Nova 68.

Pawprint rug.
2007-03-06 15:52:47
It seems I can't escape the strange, weird and wondrful rugs. Previously I have posted the landscaped rug/seating, bear door mat, the rug with pillow, the rugified impression of a rabbit bouncing across a field of pristine snow, the stamp rug, and the unfortunate Yeti. Here's the next installment; feline pawprints across damp sand. The rug itself is hand tufted wool. From GBP 1,095:- (approx. USD 2,075:-) at Lion Witch Wardrobe.

The Flap (almost) indefinitely adjustable sofa.
2007-03-06 15:52:42
Designed in 2000 by Francesco Binfaré, the Flap's distinctive shape and multiple adjustable back rests make it one of the most instantly recognizable of the sofas designed in the last decade. USD 10,155:- plus VAT in fabric, USD 12,414:- in leather from Europe by Net. If it has not been sold since, there's a demo example in white leather for sale in the Normann showroom in Copenhagen for around DKK 55,000:-. That seems like a bargain at USD 9,400:-!

Sperm plate.
2007-03-06 15:52:38
They say it's a biscuit porcelain plate with "relief" designs. And by all means, sure they are in relief. But they look a lot like sperm to me. Design by Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel for the Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum, The Netherlands. The plate is 5 inches in diameter and will set you back USD 120:- at Moss.

Stainless steel minimalist mailbox.
2007-03-06 15:52:34
Laser cut, press formed, machine fused, brushed hairline finish, key lock on back, even with a matching stainless nameplate for engraving. How could you resist this ultra minimalist mail box even though it has not been submitted for USPS rating. Maybe because they want you to shell out a 50 percent deposit up front with your order. I don't think so. Would you? It's USD 750:- on Eboniste.

2007-03-06 15:52:30

Screw down flower pot.
2007-03-06 15:52:27
Italian gardenware firm Serralunga (famous for those outsized polyethylene planters by Corrado Thibaldi) has also produced the Santavase screw down flower pot by Denis Santachiara. The pot has a steel screw at the end that allows it to be screwed into the ground. This makes it possible to use in slanting or uneven gardens. There's also a metal stand (inset) available should you decide to take it inside.

2007-03-06 15:52:22
The Cas Pots is a collection of lids suitable for standard food industry pots, like the ones in which you buy jam, marmalade, condiments, etc. Each lid has its specific function; like coffee mug, citrus press and spout, but they are all aimed at giving jars a second lease on life. Lego-like planters.
2007-03-06 15:52:18
The Nello Il Matto planters from Italian firm Serralunga (famous for those outsized polyethylene planters also by Corrado Thibaldi) gives a playful wink to Lego, and they would look cool on any terrace or in any garden. They are available in four colors and with three, two or one pot. Combines like Legos. Design Corrado Thibaldi, they sell for EUR 55:- (one pot), EUR 84:- (two pots) and EUR 102:- (three pots) That is USD 70:-, 108:- and 131:- respectively.

The champagne case.
2007-03-06 15:52:12
Our visit to the Normann showroom revealed the Trio Bike in the flesh, as it were, but also one other interesting idea. The case above is no-doubt merely a promo thing, but pretty fun just the same, if not for anything else, it would make a nice gift for the champagne inclined. The Veuve Cliquot champagne carrying case with cooler will double as a purse when the bubbly is all gone.

The Fox Hotel.
2007-03-06 15:52:09
If you've read Smart Stuff recently, you know we're in wonderful Copenhagen to see some design classics (the Poul Kjærholm exhibition at the Louisiana art museum), but also to se some new stuff, like the Normann showroom we posted on at Smart Stuff. We're staying in the Hotel Fox in central Copenhagen, a place brimming with contemporary art and design, where every room is different and designed by young designers from all over the world. Above are our pictures of the lobby area and the outside roof terrace at Fox Hotel.

Putting the pop back in mopping.
2007-03-06 15:52:00
This is fun. Swedish designer Marie-Louise Gustafsson has this idea for easier and more fun mopping of your floors. Flipflops with cleaning cloth soles. Just dip your feet in the tub and skate around the place for a while.

Fingerprint bowl
2007-03-06 15:51:56
Well, it's really called fingerbowl and it is the work of German artist Judith Seng. It's one of several pictures sent to MocoLoco by Matthias Demacker. All from the Young German Design show recently held in Bonn, Germany, and organized by Gesellschaft für Kunst und Gestaltung.

Yeti rug.
2007-03-06 15:51:52
Here's why no-one has ever seen or encountered any Yeti. Someone else did, and that someoneelse seems to have gotten the upper hand. Joke, OK? The Yeti rug by artist Debra Swann, and on her website she explains (excerpt): "...the most visible trait (of her work) comes from a collision between the worlds of reality and fantasy. Taking materials from the everyday and transforming them into fantastical objects or attire, I attempt to investigate my own imagination and explore the boundaries between the everyday and the subconscious or metaphysical worlds of fantasy." Way to go.

Coffee cups with stencils.
2007-03-06 15:51:48
Who has not doodled with cup-rings of coffee on a coffee-shop counter top or office blotter? I have, that's for sure. Frequently. Now these cups takes coffee cup doodling to a whole new level, and I love it. I found this on iCYbELLE, a Spanish speaking blog that has been kind enough to link to our other blog, Smart Stuff. iCYbELLE is in Spanish, and though I must admit that Spanish is all Greek to me, they had the link, so now I know that these fab cups come from Thorsten van Elten, are designed by Valeria Miglioli and Barnaby Barford and sell for GBP 29:- (approx. USD 53:-) for the pair.

A new take on power strips.
2007-03-06 15:51:40
The E-rope is a new idea for a power strip. It lets users add or remove sockets at will. Moreover, all the sockets can be turned 180 degrees, so adjacent sockets are not blocked. When electrical devices are not in use, simply twist the socket section 90 degrees to disconnect the flow of electricity. Gold winner in the Student Design category in the IDEA Awards 2006. Design Chul Min Kang and Sung Hun Lim for the Pratt Institute.

The MIN children's chair and rocking horse.
2007-03-06 15:51:31
The MIN is a fun, engaging chair for children aged five to eight that also converts into a rocking chair. Made from a single piece of injection molded plastic, the design offers great manufacturing efficiencies and could be produced in a wide range of fun colors. With no legs and its single, rounded form, the MIN.CHAIR is ambiguous at first glance. But the cleverness of its dual function soon wins over all who see it. Gold winner in the Student Design category in the IDEA Awards 2006. Design Chul Min Kang for the Pratt Institute.

Tire-track rug.
2007-04-11 09:55:48
As any reasonably frequent reader of these ramblings (I actually believe there are a few) know I have a soft spot for rugs. At least for the unusual and fun ones. The oriental kind leaves me indifferent, I'm afraid. Here's yet another installment in the never ending series of rugs I'd like to own. The tire-track rug from Amazed, i.e. artists Madeleine and Dudley Edwards.

The English butler alarm clock featuring Stephen Fry.
2007-04-11 09:55:35
Not long ago we had an e-mail to Smart Stuff from Simon Carr, the inventor of the alarm clock above. After considering its features we decided to publish it here on Cool Finds, instead. With all due respect to Mr. Carr, we don't really think it's Smart Stuff stuff. But. We do think its wake up messages recorded by Stephen Fry are very, very funny indeed. Mr. Fry, being a long time favourite, has recorded fifty messages for the clock, and a few of them are available for play-back on the site. Try the one above for a quick sample. The Voco clock is GBP 25:95 (approx. USD 50:-) on the Voco website.

Perhaps for Swedes only. The Bilar USB memory stick.
2007-04-11 09:55:03
We had an e-mail from Johan Ellingsen suggesting this novel USB stick his company has produced for Swedish candy company Ahlgrens Bilar for us to post on Smart Stuff. Even though we don't think it's really smart enough for Smart Stuff, we do think it's cool enough for Cool Finds. The Ahlgrens Bilar brand is a much beloved soft marshmallow-like candy in the shape of small cars that has been produced and sold i Sweden since the early fifties. This USB 2.0 , 128 MB memory stick was produced (we think) as a give-away for employees and business partners. For a Swede with a sweet tooth this would be a tasty item, indeed.

Limited edition "Sophia" retro phone on Design Boom.
2007-04-13 09:17:03
This will sound like an ad, but I couldn't help myself. If I had the cash I wouldn't tell anyone, but buy them all for myself. The beautiful retro phone inspired by the the twenties and thirties, designed by Hulger UK, is for sale on Designboom's new web shop. And there's only ten of them. The phones use bluetooth technology to connect to your mobile, PC or Mac and they are fully compatible with Skype. Whats the catch? Well, alas, they start at USD 239:-. That's 2,390:- for the lot, so what's your credit status like?

Anonymizing glasses.
2007-05-12 18:47:15
Dubbed Flickrblockrs, these glasses will instantly put one of those anonymizing black rectangles across your face whenever you feel you don't want to have your face plastered all over the internets. When you spot a camera, just whip these puppies on and presto! It is unclear, however, if the Flickrblockrs allow you to see through them or if they render you totally blind while wearing them. From Flickblockrs for USD 9:99.

Just like an old pants' hanger. But with a mirror.
2007-05-23 18:50:03
The obvious comment is of course "why not". And that it would go so very nicely with the naked light-bulb in the ceiling and the noisy bedsprings in a really cheap motel. Designed by Cheong and Nogtev, in 1998 it's USD 35:- on the Moma Store. [Via the ever interesting...]
