2007-04-01 15:33:57
It’s officially spring. Congratulations everybody, we made it through another winter with our sanity relatively intact. We should all be very proud. As a reward, the music industry is dropping some tasty selections on us during the month of April . So, while waiting out all the coming April showers, staring forlornly through the window, wishing you could go outside and play, there will plenty of great new music to keep you busy.

Japan Makes History With Longest Concert Ever
2007-03-31 14:46:04
What fun would a Saturday morning be without a new Guinness World Record winner? This time it’s Japan that can take a bow: Over 900 Japanese musicians ranging from ages 6 to 89 took turns playing continuously over nine days, for a record-breaking 184-hour concert. If that’s not impressive enough, they kept on going right through fatigue and a major earthquake--a 6.9 whopper, to be exact.

CD Review - Mika's Life In Cartoon Motion
2007-03-31 02:04:57
Life In Cartoon Motion is the debut album of British singer Mika. Formally known as Mica Penniman, the singer and composer sounds like a cross between Freddie Mercury and George Michael. With an incredible range, reaching up into Alvin and the Chipmunks territory (seriously), Mika sensationalizes this jubilant album, making it strangely addictive.

CD Review - Elton John's Rocket Man, Number Ones
2007-03-31 00:14:07
Only the very, very best of the Elton John phenomena, spanning decades of impeccable melodies, makes the cut on Rocket Man - Number Ones. The album, composed of 12 No. 1 hits and five favorites, and released with an obvious Sgt. Pepper cover homage, is a plentiful compilation of ageless classics. This comes from someone who’s never paid much mind to the flamboyant, costume-loving extraordinaire.

What Would You Say To Another Dave Matthews Band Tour?
2007-03-30 22:57:26
Is it just me, or does Dave Matthews Band spend more time touring than actually making albums? It seems like the guys are always on the road, even when their newer stuff is barely identifiable (the last new tune of theirs that rings a bell is "Where Are You Going" … and that was from 2002's Busted Stuff). Sigh. We'll see if they've still got it when they release a new CD via RCA before year's end.

Flaming Lips, Killers Weave The Way For Spider-Man 3 Soundtrack
2007-03-30 19:05:52
The tracks for the Spider -Man 3 soundtrack will feature such relevant acts as the Flaming Lips, the Killers and Jet. Our hero discovers his bad alter ego in the upcoming action extravaganza, but the supplementing music, while I do like most of it, is still relatively calm stuff. The good news is that they kept Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger and all of Dashboard Confessional far away from this one.

Nirvana's Nevermind Turned Into Modern Dance Show?
2007-03-30 18:45:19
When you think about Kurt Cobain and the piece of genius that is Nevermind , you're likely not thinking how it would make for a wonderful modern dance interpretation. But in the performing arts there's no such thing as a bad idea, so this "eureka!" moment has come to fruition. In Seattle, the city of grunge, no less.

Modest Mouse Makes A Big Splash On Billboard Chart
2007-03-29 19:56:24
Everybody wants a piece of the Washington state band Modest Mouse . Its most recent effort, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, shot straight to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 129,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album was originally intended for release last December, but this spring release seems to have worked out nicely.

J.Lo Just Can't Stay Away From The Bronx
2007-03-29 18:13:55
Hey, did you hear the one about how singer Jennifer Lopez used to live in the Bronx and would ride the 6 train every day into NYC to make her dreams happen? Of course you have--she shares this tidbit to anyone who will listen, even putting her experiences into the life-altering poetic anthem "Jenny From The Block." Just in case you forgot her roots for half a second, she is here to remind you. Again.

Korn And Evanescence - A Likely Match For Family Values?
2007-03-28 18:38:34
Fans still dig these shows and this year's shouldn’t fare much worse, though I find the addition of the teenage tear-jerking Evanescence an odd choice. From a business standpoint, I get it--Evanescence is hot right now and should have no problem ushering in hordes of ecstatic youth to the Family Values shows. But does the operatic emoting of Amy Lee really blend with Korn’s straightforward raunchiness?

Great Debate - Are The Arctic Monkeys More Than A Flash In The Pan?
2007-03-28 04:06:01
Are the Arctic Monkeys the second coming of the Rolling Stones? The Beatles Reincarnate? No. They are four British 20 year olds who play fast-paced, hook-laden rock songs about being young, hanging out, drinking beer, and women. VS. ... The Arctic Monkeys don’t suck necessarily. They just aren’t that good. They somehow became the biggest band to hit the U.K. last year since the Libertines

Michael Jackson 50-Foot Robot Replica In The Works?
2007-03-28 02:07:25
All Michael Jackson news has to be taken with a grain of salt. I must admit, I was a bit skeptical about the veracity of the following news item. However, his associates are quoted, so it has to be true. And, truth be told, it sounds pretty great. Jackson is currently in discussions regarding the creation of a 50-foot robotic replica of himself to roam the Las Vegas desert, shooting laser beams

Brody Dalle Coming Back, But Not With Distillers
2007-03-28 02:05:28
It’s been almost four years since we’ve heard anything new from the Distillers. As they were among the first of this latest wave of indie rock acts to make a name for themselves in the new millennium, their absence has been noted. More importantly, that distinctive Brody Dalle growl has been missed. According to NME, the growl’s coming back, just not with the Distillers

Tom Morello Thinks Rage Reunion Will Happen
2007-03-27 20:34:54
Former Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello is yearning for a reunion tour with the fulminating rockers of the '90s. Morello feels that the new presidential campaign season is craving the presence of classic politically charged RATM. "These times, I think, demand a voice like Rage Against the Machine to return," he says

CD Review - The Ponys' Turn The Lights Out
2007-03-27 07:50:23
Dig deep enough into the garage and you’ll find the Ponys, one of the more talented bands you’ve probably never heard of. The Ponys make their mark with a blend of garage and industrial/grunge rock, a sound reminiscent of Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr. or Built to Spill; the songs are filled with distorted guitars, simple riffs, mumbled lyrics and echoed vocals.

CD Review - Good Charlotte's Good Morning Revival
2007-04-02 06:26:30
Musically speaking, the biggest detriment to Good Morning Revival is the total absence of creative variety. If you hate one song, you hate ALL the songs. Conversely, if this watered-down punk stuff is right up your alley, then the album deserves to be in your collection. And frankly, if you liked Good Charlotte before reading this review, you don’t need any incentive—go and buy the album.

2007-04-04 23:42:22
Not only is Tim McGraw married to one of the most beautiful singers on the planet, but now he also has the No. 1 album in the country. Way to bogart all the joy in life, buddy. McGraw's Let It Go debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 this week, selling 325,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Billboard reports that the No. 2 spot was filled by yet another NOW! That's What I Call Music collection

CD Review: Fountains Of Wayne's Traffic And Weather
2007-04-04 18:46:03
Traffic and Weather is an enjoyable effort, but it’s meant to be enjoyed now, not later. It makes many modern and pop culture references (Costco, Coldplay), which will prevent the album from aging gracefully. In the meantime, crank this baby up while sunbathing or during a tumultuous balloon fight on a gorgeous day. And although I may be signing the yearbook a tad early, have a kick-ass summer.

2007-04-04 18:06:16
Beloved singer John Lennon may be long gone, but his piano, being the trooper it is, continues to tour and spread his pleas for world peace. According to Yahoo! Music, Lennon's piano--on which he composed the song "Imagine," you may have heard of it--is now owned by George Michael. The piano last appeared November 2006 during a peace protest

Want Nothing But A Good Time? Poison Is Back
2007-04-04 17:14:24
Poison is best known for the song “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” the best song ever by a bad band. I can admit the boys were never that great, but they had style, presence and unsustainable passion. Now Poison is back with a new album, and plans to team up with fellow '80s album Ratt to hit festivals, amphitheaters and fairs

Great Debate - Karaoke: Sign Me Up Or Just Shut Up?
2007-04-04 03:13:47
The beauty of karaoke is that it’s such a nonjudgmental atmosphere. You can sing a duet of Enrique Iglesias’ “Hero” and not be called gay; you can completely butcher “Moon River” and nobody will complain. After all, they’re no better than you. VS. ... Instead of getting treated to a bunch of drunks belting out Journey songs in no discernable key, I get these “amateur professionals” who bring their own materials to these events. But why?

CD Review - Macy Gray's Big
2007-04-03 15:06:14
The album finishes quickly and leaves no standout moments, and should make fans wonder where Macy’s head is/has been. If you have a hankerin’ for some truly tricked modern R&B with a lot of kick, check out Joss Stone’s latest. Everyone knows what happens when too many chefs are in the kitchen at one time, and such a predicament can often yield something that’s too Big to get out of its own way.

Open Letter To Sanjaya Malakar
2007-04-06 06:12:23
A popularity contest is not something won on merit alone, and a popularity contest is all American Idol is. This not about who is the best or most affluent singer--it’s about who we happen to like best at a specific moment in time. And you, my perpetual hair-alternating friend, are just that. Week in and week out you keep coming back to prove the dream-killers wrong, simply by being yourself.

Editorial: So You Want To Make The Perfect Party Mix …
2007-04-07 16:56:47
I can only assume that if you’re reading this article you are: a) a drunken college student who has no idea what music to play for his next kegger; b) a self-anointed music critic who will yell at me about not having any Morrissey on the list; or c) in some way related to me. I’m going to go ahead and cater to my target audience--so “group a,” this list is for you.

Costner Sues Promoter For Failed Music Career
2007-04-07 05:01:20
Actor Kevin Costner may be latching onto a few too many conspiracy theories since starring in Oliver Stone’s JFK. The aging lothario filed an $8.5 million lawsuit this week against Mahee Worldwide Ventures Inc., a music promotion company, for failing to help him kick-start a hit singing career. I know what you’re thinking: Kevin Costner sings? Yes, he does, but that speaks nothing of the quality of his voice.

Fall Out Boy Has A Falling Out, Tour Delayed
2007-04-07 04:22:17
It looks like the members of Fall Out Boy might soon be singing “Thanks for the memories” … to one another. According to Billboard, the chart-climbing emo band has delayed the start of its Honda Civic Tour due to unspecified “personal issues.” That could cover a wide number of issues, such as “Hey, I saw that groupie first!” or “Why did you borrow my eyeliner without my permission?”
