Mini-Review: Raphael Saadiq- The Way I See It.
2008-09-13 13:35:00
When thinking about this album, the first word that comes to mind is "Motown." Raphael Saadiq experiments with the 60's Motown sound and he nails it. The album kicks off to a smooth, medium-tempo, 60's beat in "Sure Hope You Mean It" and this sound is apparent through out most of the songs. The duet with Joss Stone in "Just One Kiss" is beautiful, and the the spotlight was equally shared between t

In this clip, she talks about the Vortex Tour, her song selections for the tour, and some of the producers that she's working with on New Amerykah Part II.

Artist Spotlight: Giovanca.
2008-09-09 17:45:00
Out of ALL of the artists that I have discovered recently, I think she's one of my favorites. She came up with the idea for her album, Subway Silence, by observing the people in the subway and noticed that every minute was different. There aren't any tracks on her album that sound the same, so it's not a bore. After listening to it, I wanted to know everything about her; where she was from, how ol

Ledisi- Lost & Found(2007)
2008-09-08 16:11:00
Ledisi has to be one of the best "underground" soul artists around right now. She is a former member of a group called Anibade, and the group released their first album, Soulsinger, in 2000. Eventually, Ledisi went solo and released her album, Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue, independently in 2002. In 2007, she was signed to Verve, and she released this album. The song "Alright" has been getting

Jaguar Wright - And Your Point is (2004) Unreleased
2008-09-07 16:47:00
This is another hard to find album.  This one was never released, since it was lost in the shuffle when she moved from MCA Records to Artemis Records.  Some of the songs made it to her last album "Divorcing Neo 2 Marry Soul".  She has a very unique and gritty sound that will grasp you from the first song.  Sorry for the small album art, but it's hard to find album art for a unreleased album.

Hil St Soul - Soul Organic (2000)
2008-09-07 16:25:00
Here is another rare one.  Hil St Soul is lead by Hillary Mwelwa b. Lusaka from London, that came into the scene with a acoustic version of Stevie Wonder's "Til You Come Back To Me" .  Based off the success of that song, she signed with Dome Records, and released Soul Organic , in 2000.  The group has a very upbeat, soul infused Jazz sound.  Enjoy.1. Strictly A Vibe Thang (VRS Mix)2. Nostalgia

Brown Baby Girl - Brown Baby Girl(2006)
2008-09-07 01:22:00
Brown Baby Girl's sound... is the sound for the forgotten and neglected music lover. It gingerly fulfills the listeners longing for creative instrumentation and delectable vocal styling. It is the next evolutionary manifestation of jazz. It reminds R&B of its roots and re-introduces the concept that in jazz there are no rules. It is in essence, a completely new way of musically being.1. Devot

Here's A Treat. Lizz Wright- The Orchard(2008)
2008-09-05 16:52:00
There is no need for me to type a short little bio on her. You should be ashamed if you've never heard of her! She has one of the best voices I've ever heard, it's so beautiful. I decided to post this album because I've had it in heavy rotation for a while now. "My Heart" is a personal favorite. I recommend that you PURCHASE this album if you get the chance. 1. Coming Home2. Little Dragon- Little Dragon(2007)
2008-09-04 17:19:00
I guess you can put this album under the "electronica" genre? I'm not too sure, it has a little bit of everything. Someone on last.fm had recommended that I give them a listen, and I did. This is a very enjoyable album. The lead singer, Yukimi Nagano, sounds like a mixture of Kissey Asplund and Erykah to me(not her style, her voice). Check it out for yourself:1. Twice2. Turn Left3. Australian Alicia Keys Interview.

In this interview, she talks about being on tour with Jordin Sparks, Ne-Yo, burping, and her "pigeon incident." It seems like the guy who was doing the interview was irritating her. "I don't know how to burp on cue! Who knows how to do that?! I can't do that!" Listen here. Thanks to Alicia Keys Daily!

Randomness....

Okay, so I'm a HUGE fan of Chrisette Michele. I fell in love with her voice as soon as I heard it. When her album came out, I ran out and bought it(it's available here for download) and it was excellent. There isn't one bad song on the album. She has a GREAT voice, we haven't had an artist like her around in a while. But to get to the point, I'm upset. I don't like how she's being treated. First o

Choklate's upcoming concerts and album

Here are some upcoming dates for Choklate.  She also has a new album arriving at the end of this year, or the beginning of the next.  I can't wait for that album to be released.  These concerts should be unreal, but why are the best concerts never near me?

Conya Doss - A Poem About Ms. Doss (2002)
2008-08-30 05:40:00
This is the album that started my love of all things Conya Doss.  Being a school teacher from Cleveland, OH, with influences from Stevie Wonder, Angela Winbush, Donnie Hathaway and Minnie Ripperton.  Her first album being "A Poem About Ms. Doss", had critical acclaim and regional success.  At this time the album is out of print, and mildly hard to find.  If you like Algebra or April Hill yo

Yahzarah - Hear Me(2006)
2008-08-28 11:04:00
YahZarah broke into the music industry alongside Erykah Badu, whom she sung backup for on Mama's Gun, and in turn established herself as a solo artist in a similar vein, releasing a couple independent albums during the early 2000s. Born Dana Williams in Washington, D.C., YahZarah (whose name loosely means "Queen Mother is the brightest star" -- itself a tribute to her deceased grandmother from Gha

Inside The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
2008-08-27 13:53:00
A very interesting read, if I must say. You can read it all here.Things that stood out to me:Lauryn Hill: [I wanted to] write songs that lyrically move me and have the integrity of reggae and the knock of hip-hop and the instrumentation of classic soul. [My engineer and I worked on] a sound that's raw. I like the rawness of you being able to hear the scratch in the vocals. I don't ever want that t

Porsche Smith - About Life(2007)
2008-08-27 13:29:00
Singer-Songwriter, Porsche Smith , can be classified as Instant Vintage. Webster defines vintage as characterized by excellence, maturity, and enduring appeal; classic. Although the 24-year-old, California native has been compared to some of soul music’s classic vocalists, such as Roberta Flack and D’Angelo, Smith’s writing and musical compositions transcend genres all across the board. Japan's Greater Love Of Good Music
2008-09-30 22:23:00
As I surf the web this evening, it hits me that Japan has a far greater love of good music than Westerners.  Why do I say this?  Here is an example.  Nina Vidal released her self titled album on iTunes in the States on May 7th, 2007.  No buzz, and only 2 reviews to date on iTunes.  In comparison, she is the number one Jazz album in on Itunes, in Japan.  Also, she is the number four album o
