Hip hip hurray for sunshine!
2007-01-28 16:05:31
Yippee it’s sunny out today! I would love it to be sunny all winter long, and cloudy all summer long. Spring and Fall can be a mixture. I’m putting in my request to Mother Nature!Yesterday I made bread, boy sourdough just goes nuts on the rising, I have a clay French bread pan that I use, and I’m unable to put the lid on it when I make sourdough bread in it. Amazing how far 2 1/2 cups of flour go with bit of starter mixed in. I made Enchiladas for dinner, so we’ll be able to have the leftovers for lunch, and tonight I thought I’d grill some chicken for Cobb salads.I started playing around with setting up and splitting the designs for the first block in the Aquamarine Ambiance quilt. Mostly, I’m making a test square, and simply cut an 18 inch block of Osnaburg, fused interfacing to it, then fused fleece to the back of it. Pretty thick! I’m using the same red and gold cotton threads I used to embroider our pillow shams. If it looks good, I was th

Jim gave the dogs a bath yesterday, so I washed their beds. I had them hanging outside for about an hour while I finished drying our bathrobes, and when I brought them in they were frozen! I didn’t realize it was that cold out. This morning when I got up, we had no water. I thought it had frozen until I let the dogs out, and heard gushing water from the RV pad next to us. It HAD froze and the pipes burst, so Jim went out and shut the valve to it off. We’ll call the campground owners this morning so they can get it fixed.Yesterday Doug (Hotel California) posted a comment on my blog about liking our CedarCreek RV better than the (long, long trailer as he describes it) New Horizons unit. I replied that I did too, but ours wasn’t built nearly as well. And that’s when my brain said… HELLO out there, DOH! Sure it’s a far superior unit to ours. It’s 6 feet longer, and we all know I’d kill for that extra quilting space. It’s insulated much b

I think I got it!

Yesterday I finished stitching out Block 6 of the AquaMarine Ambiance quilt. I should rename that for my use, since my blocks certainly aren’t any shade of aquamarine. I swapped out the variegated red for a variegated green, and love these Click for larger viewresults, this is the “folksy” look I was after. This is stitched on Osnaburg fabric with Sulky 30wt cotton thread. This isn’t a perfect hooping, but it’s close enough and I think it will be alright to use. I have to run to town today to restock my supply of needles, I seem to be getting a bit low. I also want to pick up some red piping, as I want to make that sewing machine cover out of the first block I made. I might swing by Lowe’s and take a peek at their wood flooring, Jim and I think we’ll go ahead and replace the carpet in here, since we’ve decided to keep this RV for awhile. I think I’ll also check into a combination microwave/convection oven to replace the microwav

It’s cold out this morning, so cold that I think another water line burst in the campground. I woke up around 2am, and the water was beginning to freeze, so I ran it for a bit. When I got up at 5am, there was more than a trickle, but not full flow, so I left the kitchen faucet on. It just quit. I’m guessing since it didn’t gradually trickle off, it’s another pipe. Poor Charlie (campground owner). What a mess for him to deal with, and he’s working out of town right now. I hope this is to another section that we can isolate and turn the valve off again, otherwise we’re going to be out of water as well. As soon as it gets light outside we’ll have to go explore and see if we can find the problem. It looks like I’m going to get my wish, and we’re actually going to get some snow down here in Arkansas this afternoon, tonight and tomorrow! Yippee! I picked up all the essentials to weather the storm (hehe, we may get all of 2 inches) hot coco

New brain or more hours, something!
2007-02-02 13:15:42
I need more hours in my day. I remember when the kids were young, and I was working fulltime it seemed there were never enough hours to do all that needed to be done. These days, I’ve manage to fill my life in a box with so many things that interest me, my brain gets twisted and all gnarled up trying to do everything at once! Is getting bored a trait that only some people have? Can I borrow it from someone for a week or so? My brain needs a rest, it’s on overload.Probably what’s going on here, is that my brain is simply so tiny it doesn’t take much to fill it up to the overflow point, which seems to happen quite often. I’ve very much enjoyed the past couple of days, there is an inch or two of snow on the ground, the campground is quiet and peaceful… which is a good thing that it’s empty except for us, because our water issue the day before yesterday? Serious issue. This tiny campground boasts 10 sites. 3 of those have 50 amps, the other 7 are 3

The fireplace is out!
2007-02-03 13:59:31
Brrr… there’s a definite chill radiating up from the floor this morning, but it’s warm enough in here. I set the furnace thermostat to 65 and it didn’t kick on during the night, so the 2 space heaters are doing a great job. I replaced them this year with 2 Pelonis III units, they were much more expensive than the cheaper ones from Lowe’s, but well worth the price.  We however, have frost covering the insides of our windows this morning, it’s that cold!Jim removed the fireplace yesterday, but hasn’t installed the new cabinet doors yet. They sent 3 pieces, that for the life of me I can’t figure out what the big piece is for, it just doesn’t seem to fit anywhere. There’s the 2 doors and one other piece. Good thing Jim’s doing the install, I’ll let him figure it out J.Click for larger viewI’d planned to put my Bernina luggage in the space, but only the large bag would fit, with my serger, but not the embroid

Color me purple
2007-02-04 14:40:15
I have a friend I “met”, nearly 6 years ago, playing an online game. Her name is Paula, and we’ve had a lot of fun over the years, playing various games online, emailing each other, sharing our “sob” stories as our boys grew up, enlisted, went off to strange countries… the usual things friends share, only we’ve never met in person.  Our kids are the same age, and they are actually friends “online” as well, pretty cool! Recently she became a grandmother, only she is raising the baby. I know that Paula loves the color purple, and so I’ve Click for larger viewdecided to set my other projects aside (other than the headboard cover, I’m nearly finished with it) and make her a baby quilt for Willow, her granddaughter. Moda has a line of fabrics called “Sanctuary” which are in beautiful pastel shades of yellow, green, blue and lilac, with some reds thrown in for a bit of punch. I ordered some yardage this mornin

I finished the headboard!
2007-02-05 16:24:58
Click for larger viewIt’s finally done!  Somehow I don’t think this was ever in Simon Haskins wildest dreams when he designed his AquaMarine Ambiance quilt, but that’s what I’ve done with it, and I’m quite pleased with the results.  Jim still needs to mount the headboard back to the wall for me, I just have it propped up at the moment so I could take a picture.I spoke with the technician at my Bernina dealer this morning, and the patch for my 440 has been recalled, but I still need the update for the BSR feet for both machines, plus my 730 is ready for another service call, the alarm went off the day before yesterday.  So tomorrow morning I’ll be headed up to Missouri for a couple of days. I’d love to stay an extra day or two, but it’s supposed to snow up there and I don’t want to get stuck.  I take the extremely twisty scenic Hwy 7 to get back to Missouri, then various other backroads heading out to my folks, an

I had a very quick trip!  I drove up to my folks on Tuesday and spent the night, before heading to my dealer on Wednesday, then back down to Arkansas the same day.  It was a beautiful drive, there was still snow on the ground in Jasper, and they had salted the roads after all.  I hurried back through yesterday though, as I was afraid that the roads, still being wet from the snow melting and running off, would refreeze.  With 20mph curves, Hwy 7 is not a road to drive when it’s icy.My mom made me one of her fabulous lemon meringue pies, man was it good!  Being such a considerate child, I did my best to eat it all while I was there!   I can’t make a pie to save my life.  My crusts come out like biscuits that someone took a hammer to and flattened.  Very sad, I love pie.  Actually I can’t bake at all, other than bread.  And my mom is a fantastic baker.  I guess I missed out on that gene.I picked up an Ipod for J

What a day yesterday! I finished up our taxes and got that out of the way. Yuck. Started a batch of dough so we could have fresh bread for lunch, then started the baby quilt. I got so wrapped up piecing the top I forgot about the bread, and as sourdough tends to do, it kept rising… and rising… and when I finally remembered it, it had overflowed everywhere into the oven. I’ll post a picture later on when it gets light enough outside. This is the second time I’ve made this pattern, I really like it. More creative use of space (greedy use maybe)?
2007-02-12 15:06:13
Jim bathed the dogs again yesterday, and I worked on my quilt. Piecing it was fast, but the embroidery is taking much Click for larger viewlonger. I’m doing a flowery vine all the way around the middle border, so it’s 27 inches long on each of the 4 sides. The design is a Grade A, so I was able to use the Multi Hoop feature of the Bernina software for the entire thing, which worked great!Click for larger viewI got a bit more creative with my sewing “space” yesterday while Jim was outside. (Sneaky, aren’t I!) I could tell by the look on his face he wasn’t quite as taken with this idea as I am, but that’s okay.  It’s very functional and works great for me! Besides, this is “my side” of the living area. The kitchen is our “neutral” zone. Jim has the super slide… so in theory he has more space than I do!  I mounted the boxes to the wall with industrial velcro, so it isn’t permanent.  But the

Or a pulp…or something.  I had to finish the embroidery on my baby quilt on the 440 yesterday.  My 730 seems to be Click for larger viewsewing just fine, but I noticed that the bobbin area was collecting metal shavings!  These are definitely metal, I tested them with a magnet.  I can’t imagine what is causing this, I just brought the machine back from getting a full service done on it.  I should have realized something was wrong as soon as I brought it home, as I did notice that the bobbin was getting hot while embroidering, but I didn’t notice the metal shavings until more of them had built up.  Man, that means another 6 hour round trip!Exactly why I can’t live with just one machine.  Fortunately, I am finished with the embroidery, so maybe today I’ll get the quilt basted for quilting.  Or maybe I’ll take a break today.I made Beef Bourguignon in the Thermal cooker yesterday, it turned out beautifully.  No

I’m still undecided about that powdery stuff coming out of my sewing machine.  I think there is some metal mixed in with the stabilizer dust and rubber bits from the belts.  And it is still getting hotter than normal.  Thank heavens for warranties!I’ve been receiving a number of emails lately where people ask for help, or want a log in account, but when I go to respond, I am asked to fill out forms to be added to their “accepted emails” list.  Really folks, I appreciate your need to control your spam, but I answer so many emails a day I simply don’t have time to fill out these forms.  So if you’ve emailed me and you have one of these spam accounts set up, that’s why you never heard back from me.  I did reply, but my reply was “rejected”.  If you’re going to email someone and you have a spam controlled list of acceptable email addresses, why not take the time to add the person you’re ema

Batik Butik, I love it!
2007-02-15 15:06:14
It’s snowing!  I woke up this morning to a light dusting of snow on the ground, and it’s still spitting out there.  Of course I felt a little guilty when I looked out at it with glee, after hearing about the incredible amount of snow falling up in the north east states.  That’s when you want to be snowed in with plenty of wood for heat, a well stocked pantry, and a generator so you can sew! I was making such good progress on my baby quilt, and just haven’t been in the mood to baste it in preparation for quilting.  Perhaps I’ll get motivated and get that done today, as I’d like to finish it soon and get it mailed off.  I want to try my hand at garment construction some more, I need more PJ bottoms (I bought more flannel yesterday) and I have some wonderful, funky outfit patterns on order from the Batik Butik .  Is that a great name or what!  And talk about fabulous batik fabrics! My serger is dying to come out to

Joy Riding
2007-02-18 23:11:42
There’s nothing quite like a motorcycle to cure whatever ails you.  Jim and I headed out shortly after lunch on our bikes today.  I’m still not feeling very well, and probably shouldn’t have been riding, but there was just no way I was passing up a sunny, 50 degree day!  It’s been so cold, and rainy, and I’ve had cabin fever. It was awesome, as always!  But man let me tell you, I have never in my life seen or smelled so many dead skunks.  And the aroma is quite pungent when you ride by on a motorcycle.  We passed a little house in town where they had put down green astroturf all the way down the sidewalk, from the front door right up to the road!  I did a double take driving by, thinking, “geesh, why not make it red carpet and really make a statement”!I have the baby quilt all quilted now except for the borders.  I hope to finish those tomorrow, cut the binding and get it sewn on.Jim and I just learned tha

Coming from me, you'll find this quite laughable...

I’ve always been a big techno buff, the stuff just fascinates me. But I’ve really lost interest in it over the last few years, and along with my lack of interest comes lack of knowledge. I used to be an Apple fan, and Jim stayed with the platform much longer than I did, but eventually we were totally Windows users… almost a necessity, it’s a Windows world. That’s no longer really important for either of us, and for Jim, work related items are all available on a Mac platform with the exception of AutoCAD. Not so for me. I’d guess that half of my software (that I find necessary ) isn’t available on the Mac platform. Yes, I’m aware of Parallels, but it seems to me that it rather defeats the entire point of owning a Mac, does it not?Isn’t the reason people buy a Mac the simplicity of the darn thing? I know some say they use a Mac for security reasons, but that’s just silly. The Mac OS gets security updates just like the Windows OS.

Its Spring! Well here in Arkansas, for this week it is anyway. Upper 40’s at night, and upper 60’s during the day, that’s my idea of perfect weather. Yesterday I heard frogs for the first time this year, what a welcome sound it was! I left the bedroom window open all night just so I could listen to them.I tried a new recipe yesterday, it was really good, a keeper! This morning I’ve got a batch of sourdough going as I haven’t made any bread all week, shame on me.Oktoberfest Beef Rouladen 4 - 6 ounce very thin beef, steaks, flank steak, or, top butt 1 tablespoon German or Dijon mustard 2 large dill pickle, cut in half lengthwise 1 onion, sliced, very, thinly, into rings 4 strips bacon 1/2 cup red wine 1 1/2 cup beef broth 1 bay leaf 1 tablespoon cornstarch 2 tablespoon waterLay the steaks on a flat surface and brush with the mustard; lightly sprinkle each with salt and pepper. First of all, my IPod arrived! So I spent the morning fiddling with it, learned how to “rip” DVD’s and copy them over to my IPod. No, I’ve no intentions of watching movies on my little screen, but I’m in the process of burning all my sewing and quilting instructional DVD’s over to it. Absolutely incredible! Now I can “flip” over to a chapter, watch the technique I need a refresher on, all without fumbling through various remote controls… locating the DVD, or forcing Jim to watch i

Yesterday ended up being such a gorgeous day (nearly 80 degrees!) that Jim decided to play hooky after lunch. We hopped on the motorcycles and went for a ride. I’m still getting used to handling my big bike on the twisties, it’s not quite as maneuverable as my 750 was, but boy is it incredible out on the highway! It nearly scared me to death on my 750 when a semi truck passed me, but the 1300 is rock solid. Awesome! We rode up to the next county and picked up a case of our favorite beer, 1554. It’s a black ale, the one I make my sourdough starter with! Jim put half of it in his Givi trunk, and I split the remaining 2 six packs in my saddlebags. We’re parked in a dry county, so we have to travel for booze. Good thing we don’t drink much. Do you think we looked like a pair of lush hounds strapping all that beer into our bikes? I am completely captivated with my IPod. If we weren’t limited on bandwidth due to satellite restrictions, I’d have likel

Nose plugs or jail?
2007-02-23 15:10:35
The fire across the street is still smoldering, and it smells absolutely horrible. Jim and I were debating on if we’d get caught if we were to sneak over in the middle of the night, pour some gasoline on the mess, and relight the darn thing so it’d be over and done with! However, as small as our “Box” is, I figure it’s significantly larger and more cushy than any jail cell… so we opted for nose plugs.I managed to crash my IPod this morning. Or my laptop managed it actually. Fortunately a quick Google search found the solution, and I learned how to reset it by pressing the Menu and Select buttons until it reset itself. Jim was prepared to pull the battery from the housing, but fortunately got sidetracked admiring my wonderful “skin” I purchased for it. I ended up ordering him the same one before breakfast was over. It is really nice. It’s neoprene with a hard front so the screen is protected and the menu buttons are as well. This morn
