It looks as if "treetops" will become a small series. I am enjoying the challenge of simplifying all the thousands of colored leaves into a pleasing design that works visually and also captures the impression of treetops so the viewer knows what she's looking at. These little paintings are deceptively complex and need to be approached as a purely abstract pattern first getting color, value and shape orchestrated before any though goes into details like trunks and branches to make them look like trees. I'm very absorbed in the painting process when I'm working on these... painting very intuitively.....great feeling for an artist, in the "zone" as they say. Look for more of these to document the change as the season progresses. Enjoy!

Gourds are gourd-ge-ous!! And so are the few sunflowers I have left in a vase. Yep, this is one of the same flowers from the painting a few days ago called "Last of the Sunflowers" I'm trying to make the most of them before they fade. Then I'll have to wait until next year :( I just love all these warm colors of autumn, they're like comfort colors for me, sorta of like the meatloaf and mashed potatoes of the art world LOL. Pretty soon though the muted greys, blues and umbers, the quiet, meditative solitary colors of winter will be the order of the day. Each season has it's own particular look and feel. Enjoy each one!

This is one of the big benefits of living in New England....all the gorgeous fall colors! We are a few weeks behind schedule, hitting peak color now instead of on Colombus Day, and I'm glad. Autumn is such a fleeting season that it's nice when it hangs on a little longer.

This candle smells sooooooo good, just like warm maple syrup! I love to light candles during the autumn and winter when the days are so short and the mornings and evenings so dark. They create a warmth and a soft flickering light that fills the house with a cozy atmosphere.

This was painted "en plein air", meaning outdoors. I often paint at this local state park. The colors of the trees and the golden afternoon light were irresistable. It's so wonderful to paint outdoors there were birds and butterflies in droves (theres a butterfly garden, near this spot) and the weather was perfect. Enjoy!

I love the rich, warm colors of autumn. We're really in the middle of all the autumn beauty now here in southern New England. I'm sorry about the glare in the upper left of the background. I'm still working on developing a way to get better photos opf wet paintings.

As I was getting ready to make some soup I decided that I should paint the onions first. I loved the colors, the golden yellow and the rich red-purple together. I was a slightly overcast day and the north light from the sliding glass doors created a perfect situation for settng them up as a still life. To me this is such a homey, kitchen painting, I can almost smell the soup that came later. Enjoy!

Don't you just love these little minature pumpkins?? When my kids were little we used to grow them in our garden. Nowadays I just buy them at the farm stand. Pumpkins, like peaches, are wonderful to paint because of their glowing warm colors. That gives me a chance to push the surrounding colors the opposite way towards cool blues and greens. Artists call this a complementary color scheme. These opposite color families produce colors of different wave lengths which causes a vibration of sorts that your eye picks up. This kind of color tension is very visually rich and exciting. There's really a lot going on in this small simple painting. Enjoy!

There are beautiful Dutch genre paintings from the 17th century that often feature cows in the fields and like many Dutch landscapes they capture that silvery quality of light particular to the Netherlands. While this light is golden not silvery those were the paintings I had in mind while in was painting this. Waaaaay back when I was an art student I spent a lot of time at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY and I loved to make sketches of the cows in those Dutch paintings, I had a whole sketchbook filled with them. So today you can see my own version of this type of pastoral scene, with a litle bit of autumn in New England thrown in. Enjoy!

Wow, lot's of positive response from yesterday's post, not only on the painting but on the commentary too. Several readers have e-mailed me and asked if I could write a little bit about each painting. Well, sure! I write a lot of commentary over at my other blog Art & Life, and I can do that here too. I've loved gourds, ever since I was a little kid. We always had some decorating the house during the fall. Going to the farm stand or orchard and getting apples, pumpkins and gourds was a family tradition. I set these out on the picnic table in bright mid-morning sunlight so the colors would glow and the shadows would be strong and emphasize their unique shapes. Enjoy!
