How To Become An Accomplished Artist 2007-03-29 00:54:59 Many people want to become an artist, yet they feel they were not “born” with the talent to do so. I personally disagree with this belief. To become an accomplished artist is just like anything else in life. It requires the correct mindset and the willingness to succeed.
DESIRE - First and foremost, you need to have the desire to learn and grow. Without the desire to learn and grow, your interest will fade over time. You will definitely make mistakes and progress may not happen as quickly as you originally anticipated. If you lack the desire to continue and learn from those mistakes, you will not see much in the way of progress. I can attest to this. When I first began oil painting I recall how terrible my first paintings were. I had no experience mixing or matching colors. I did not understand that mixing colors is a science all in itself. I would either mix too many colors, or mix the wrong colors, and my mixtures came out terrible. I did become quite frustrated, and even Read more:Become

Drawing Tips - Start Easy.. 2007-03-27 22:05:03 When you first start drawing it is best to pick simple subjects to learn from. Look around your home and choose objects that do not require that much detail like a beach ball, a book or a piece of fruit. If you begin your drawing with difficult subjects, you risk becoming frustrated when you are not able to render the subject accurately.

Pastel Painting Tips - Use Different Color Paper.. 2007-03-24 23:36:37 If you typically work with only white pastel paper, you might consider spicing things up a bit by working with different colored pastel paper. You can create some very interesting and unique effects by allowing the color of the paper to show through. You are also saving money by using more of the paper as part of the pastel painting and less of your precious pastels.
Here are a few links to purchase colored pastel paper:
Strathmore 400 Series Artagain Pads
Canson Mi-Teintes Tinted Paper

Colored Pencil Tips - Don’t Overdo It.. 2007-03-23 16:41:44 Be careful that you do not put too many layers of the colored pencil medium on your paper. Eventually your paper will not be able to hold the medium as it will become saturated. You will risk tearing your paper as well.

Drawing Tip - Learn To Draw Before You Paint 2007-03-23 15:48:39 Drawing is a wonderful art form all in itself, but it is also a great training tool for painting. One you understand and learn how to draw well, you are then free to focus your mind on the challenge of working with color.
One of the best ways to practice drawing is to take a sketch book around and simply start to sketch your surroundings. Find subjects that are appealing to you and start drawing.
Find a good book on beginner drawing and learn the fundamentals: The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is a really great book.
I hope this drawing lesson has helped. Keep practicing. Once you get a really good grasp on drawing, your paintings will flow much easier.

Oil Painting Tip - Feeling Uninspired? 2007-03-22 18:21:38 There may come a time during your oil painting journey where you may lose interest or lack ideas on what to paint. If this happens to you, don’t get discouraged, instead try one or all of the following things to give you a quick boost in creativity and to get your creative juices flowing
VISIT A MUSEUM
Head out to a local art museum with a friend or relative and spend time observing all of the beautiful artwork. This alone should spark some creativity and ideas.
RENT A MOVIE
Not just any old movie, but an art based one. There are quite a few movies out on art and artists that you could rent that will flare up some creativity. A few that I recommend are:
“Vincent and Theo”, “Basquait”, and “Girl with a Pearl Earring”.

Acrylic Painting Tip 2007-03-22 00:18:51 If you have any experience with acrylic painting, you have probably already noticed that it is a fast drying medium. Many new artists squeeze far too much acrylic paint out on the palette and wind up wasting it. Make certain you do not squeeze out more than you need. To keep the paint moist on your palette, get yourself a spray bottle and fill it with water. Keep it handy and spray a mist over your paints every once in a while to keep them from drying up.

Oil Painting Tip - Organize Your Palette 2007-03-22 00:12:52 With oil painting, things can sometimes get very unorganized quickly, so every little thing helps. Get into the habit of organizing your oil paint on your palette the same way each time you paint. Over time, you will get used to the setup and begin to automatically pick up the colors without even thinking. It makes painting a little easier.

Pastels Tip 2007-03-21 21:00:58 When working with pastels, you will more than likely create a lot of dust during the course of a painting session. Never try and blow the dust from the work surface as it can be dangerous to your lungs. Take your work outdoors and gently tap the paper or canvas to remove the dust.

Pen and Ink Tips - Getting Started 2007-03-30 20:17:56 You really don’t need much to get started with pen and ink. You can start with a normal ball point pen and a piece of paper that you have lying around the house. Of course, normal household pens and plain old paper will not be as rewarding as a professional pen & ink set, but at least you can get started right away.
Here are some suggestions for popular pens to check out once you are ready to buy:
Rotring Rapidograph Pen
Rotring Sketching Art Pen
Here are some suggestions for your pen and ink paper:

Caring For Your Paint Brushes 2007-04-03 01:02:19 Whether you paint in acrylics, oils or watercolors, you should get into the habit of taking great care of your paint brushes, especially if you invest a lot of money into them. One of the worst things you can possibly do to your brushes is allow water to build up in the ferrule of the brushes after cleaning them. This happens if you don’t dry your brushes properly, or if you leave them soaking in liquid.
To prevent this from happening, here is a little tip. Get yourself a bunch of clothes pins. Next time you clean your brushes, attach the clothes pin to the end of the brush handle and hang the clip off of a desk or counter with the bristles of the brush facing the floor. This will allow gravity to pull the water from your brush and prevent it from collecting in the ferrule. Put a dish or cup under the brush to collect any dripping water.

Colored Pencil Tip - Do not over saturate your paper… 2007-04-04 03:46:20 Be very careful when applying colored pencil to your paper
. Do not overdue it. Your paper can only hold so much of the colored pencil medium before it no longer sticks to the papers surface. You also risk tearing your paper as well.

Oil Painting Lesson - Introduction To Oil Painting Fundamentals 2007-04-05 21:32:22 To accurately convey your feelings about the subject you are painting, you should learn and understand the fundamentals of oil painting like drawing, color theory, value and composition. I hope to give you a better understanding of these oil painting fundamentals in this article. This oil painting lesson is meant to be an introduction. You should study these topics further on your own when you have time.
DRAWING
Learning to draw, as a foundation for oil painting, is one of the most valuable skills a beginner oil painter can have. Many new artists usually frown upon the idea of drawing first. They would rather jump right into painting, as most beginners do. Nothing is more rewarding for a painter, than working with color, but if you want to gain experience working with values, form, and space, then drawing is something you should consider learning. This is not to say that you should master drawing, as it is an art form all in itself, but do spend time drawing and sketching your subjects Read more:Painting

Oil Painting Lesson - Introduction To Oil Painting Mediums 2007-04-10 03:03:25 Oil painting is a wonderful medium all on its own, but there are modifiers that you can add to the oil paint that can change its behavior. This article will give you an overview of some of the more popular oil painting mediums available to today’s oil painters. The use of oil painting mediums is really a matter of taste and not a requirement. Many artists do not use any mediums at all other then a bit of oil to make the paint more workable, as some paints are quite thick straight from the tube. Other artists swear by certain mediums. It should also be noted that artists differ on opinion when it comes to the effectiveness and quality of oil painting mediums, so you should experiment on your own and form your own opinion. Make sure before using any oil painting medium that you read all warning labels and always work in a well ventilated area. It is also recommended that you work with gloves to protect your skin.

Oil Painting Lesson – An Introduction To Oil Painting Supports 2007-04-14 04:55:59 An oil painting support is any surface that oil paint can be applied to. There are a variety of different surfaces that artists use to paint on. Everything from certain woods, canvas, and even metals can serve as supports for oil paint. This article will introduce you to those various supports and hopefully help you decide which support is best for your style of oil painting.
LINEN
Linen is made from the fibers of the flax plant. The plants are harvested and then left to soak in water until the outside of the plant rots away leaving the fibers underneath. The fibers are then processed into yarns or threads which are then woven into canvas. The fibers of the flax plant are long and quite strong and make for a very interesting and durable painting support. Painting
s executed on this surface have withstood the test of time. It is for this reason that linen canvas is a favorite amongst professional oil painters. Unfortunately linen canvas is rather expensive and may not be the best option Read more:Introduction
