NUS - Project Glam Megafair
2007-10-26 13:18:00
I was at NUS - Project Glam Megafair, earlier today, and I sincerely felt that it was a flop. It was organized by NUS Bizcomm, and to date this is about one of their greatest misses. The 'store-front' was rather interesting though, it was different from the usual scene at the Arts Forum. This is what it looks like from the outside:The cordoning tape was to ensure that no one carried their bags in, and for that they had a counter for students to deposit their bags. From the view inside:The red carpet ends at Sloggi (the bra makers)Noticeably, it was pretty uncrowded for a friday afternoon at 2pm. More women stuff. Usually any other bazaar would be alot more packed than this. The behind shows, again, that women part with their money easier than men.Because all the men got was: Underwear. Which is not cheap, anyway.Thats the bag redemption ticket. We left the place in less than 20 minutes.Fail!

NUS Rankings Drops - A Student's Perspective (Of Some Sort)
2007-11-10 09:42:00
Honestly, as a student in NUS, when I heard about NUS's demise, I gloated.Well, this blog entry isn't about anything metrosexual, neither is it anything about why NUS's ranking dropped - well maybe the latter is true.Like I said, as a student in NUS, I've been repeatedly told by a Professor that:"If you can use 5% of what you have learnt in the University for your work in future, you are already considered to be very lucky"Followed by:"University learning is about learning the skills to be an effective person in the workforce, such as being resourceful, etc, etc"But so far, in my daily observation across these 3 years, the people around me have exhibited the opposite. In general(and pardon me for generalizing), the students have become:1) Cheats. Everything that is graded - we cheat. Tests, Final Exams, Labs, Graded Assignments - you name it, we cheat at it.Cheating becomes more rampant in the examination hall during the finals. Look out for rants in blogs come Dec.2) Very reserved

Local Fashion Online Shops
2007-12-12 00:57:00
Dorothy, from Dotted Line faced the same problems that all women faced when they entered the corporate life - navigating the business casual dress code (in her own words), and so her online shop offers you her solutions to tackling this day-to-day nagging problem. She manages her blog that's largely devoted to the Dotted Line, and its worth your time if you lead the corporate life and have turned bored with dark suits and A-line skirts.Tskye another local online boutique, and what I really like from the Pants section is this one:Pretty costly, but a its got a good print and its hemmed nicely at the knees. Pity they don't make the male equivalent. It'd be really a hit with the guys. Boardshorts are so out.

Breaking From Conventions - The Classic Pushup
2007-12-12 00:06:00
If you'd to ask a guy how many push-ups he can do, chances are, if he throws out a hilariously large answer, that he hasn't been practicing the right 'form'. Simply put, he's rushing through the motion, and letting the other body parts do the work.Sporting enthusiasts (who perform the push-up rightly), will always tell you that the push up is under-rated. A little something from Men's Health:"Think again," says Alwyn Cosgrove, C.S.C.S., owner of Results Fitness, in Santa Clarita, California. "The pushup and the bench press both work your chest, shoulders, and triceps, but the pushup also trains your abdominals, lower back, upper back, and glutes."Read: Work more muscle, build more muscle. "You might say it's the ultimate multitasking exercise," says Cosgrove.SourceSo they've got 6 variations to the classic push up, but to most of them requires a medicine ball or an equipment not usually found at the home, so I've singled out this one:A Bigger ChestTriple-Stop PushupLead with y

Local Shopping Outlets.
2007-12-08 20:59:00
Being out again at town to look for clothing again reconfirmed that guys really have it hard getting clothing that doesn't look like everyone else has. If you put some thought into it, guys usually end up wearing the same few items. And it doesn't help that a large deal of the retail outlets are largely from Hong Kong (Giordano) or Taiwanese/Korean/Japanese (Bugis Villgage). The American (GAP), British (TopMan) and Spanish (Zara) ones are doing alot of black coloured clothing now, I guess its the winter season collection. The jeans at Bread And Butter (level 2 of Wisma Atria), are really quite out of the world, both in appearance and in price. For now, I'll turn to Online Spree's to get what I want, the more discerning readers might realize that Spree Motel was given a mention in the papers today. So that makes it a count of 3 local spree websites. The owners of Spree Motel have a sister blog, Our Wardrobe that started off as a 2nd hand clothing website - I found a few gems there. (Not

Why Not Dress Your Home with Hotel Furniture?
2007-12-20 22:38:00
If you've ever fancied hotel furnishings - the paintings, sculptures, curtains, hanging chandliers, TV closets, bar stools, electric kettles, wine glasses, telephones, rubbish bins (that you find at the lift lobbies), sofa's, chairs, coffee and dining tables, cloth hangers, files, bedsheets - you wouldn't want to miss out dropping by Jun Jie Industrial Building for a visit.Located along Katong Ampat, Jun Jie Industrial Building offers second hand furniture from hotels around Singapore, at second hand prices.Be sure to bargain and haggle a little - they're pretty flexible with prices.Tissue Box Holders Curtain Ribbons This is how it looks on the outside Lift Lobby Thrash Bin Phones, and Mini FridgesMore ProtraitsBarstoolsA (cowboy) hat, (there was a stack of them) and other hatsSofas and ceiling fansDining tables and chairsKing Tut (?), and a Safe deposit boxTV closet. An even nicer TV closetThe same TV closet, opened up.Lamps (on top) and cushionsLamp shades and portraits.More protr

Spotbit - Free eZines
2007-12-16 05:37:00
Whether you're looking for Fitness Guides, Computer Technology, Fashion, Fiction, Photography, Art or even Chinese publications, you should try getting these free ezines over at SpotbitOne of the more readable fashion ezines is Homme, but being non-Singaporean based, it gets abit of a boring read at times. Here's a typical Homme's cover page, after you've downloaded the .exe file and extracted it:And there are 2 ways to go about zooming in to read the text, personally, I prefer the right click and hover method:Spotbit's worth your time if you've got some time to spare.

Shopping at ASOS
2007-12-26 07:20:00
ASOS seems like a fine place to shop at, if you've the cash to spare. In particular I found this polo tee, of this color (called vine) especially pretty:£40.00NOW £24.00All Saints Thurston Fightclub Washed Polo - Light tie-dye washed cotton polo shirt by All Saints- Short sleeves with ribbed cuffs and button-up collar, and embroidered skull logo on chest- Back seam detail with fitted darts on the shoulder and front panelSourceAs well as this cardigan - not too messy looking, a negative example being the ones from Topman.£65.00 All Saints Prime Merino Button Up Cardigan - Merino wool cardigan by All Saints- Embroidered rams skull logo on the chest- V-neck with front button fasteningsSourceI find cardigans of the above type most appealing, notably:1) It has buttons, so you won't ruffle up your hair if you've to pull it off.2) The "V" ends at the bottom of your torso - I haven't worn these but I reckon that makes you look a little wider in the chest3) No collars - why would you need

This Could Be Better Than Ping.sg
2008-01-21 07:36:00
As we all know, Ping.sg was quite the success, modelled pretty similarly to Digg.com but perhaps more suited for local tastes. But then, as most pingsters would know, the top 10 posts are usually blog posts with cleverly chosen names - which renders the whole reason behind Ping.sg close to nothing. So when I came across this new concept - StumbleUpon, it somehow occurred to me that this has the recipe for success (provided that it doesn't become another Ping.sg).Stumble upon requires you to install a FireFox add-on, which in less than a minute gives you a tool bar above your browsing tabs:The "Stumble" button allows you to go to other sites recommended by other members of StumbleUpon - if you like it, you press the "Thumbs Up" and do a "Thumbs Down" for the reverse. So far, my Stumble jumps

Pho - Food that built a nation
2008-01-16 07:50:00
This is going to be a heavy photo-post, Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An) has to be probably my favourite South East Asian country. An unidentified chapel in Ho Chi Minh CityThe famous Pho Bo (from Lonely Planet), probably the best Pho in Ho Chi Minh and Hoi An. Hoi An is a 24hour bus ride from Ho Chi Minh - extremely painstaking ride. The Pho Chin (Pho with well-done beef), basil leaves, mint leaves, chilli, fresh limes and Ice Coffee that you can't get anywhere else but in Vietnam. At Cafe BoBo (from Lonely Planet) in Hoi An, a bowl of Cau Lau (noodles with pork slices, lard, and dou miao), and a plate of what Uncle BoBo described to be similar to "Har Gao".Banana Pancakes - could be from the Nation's strong foreign influences. Quite a hit with the foreigners. The famous Japanese Covered

Hot Men Bags!
2008-01-05 01:01:00
Style Damsel recently covered a post on Men Bags that covers quite a fair bit of detail, both literally and pictorially - which I can never over-emphasize the importance of a picture in a blog post, like this:www.doorsbyjasmb.comThose who aren't so keen on online shopping can try popping by to Topman, if they're into big duffel like bags like this:SourceLast time I checked (2 weeks ago) it was still retailing at the Marina's branch, at S$99, I believe.Read Style Damsel's guide to Men Bags here!

FiS Shopping Guide
2008-01-03 10:09:00
The guys at Fashion Is Spinach have come up with a pretty detailed shopping guide to Singapore which, most importantly, takes us off the beaten roads to the more indie, quaint fashion boutiques.Essentially, in the guide, the reader is taken to Ann Siang hill in Chinatown.A search into "Ann Siang Hill" also gives a review by MIWDefinitely worth a stop at if you're into designer furniture, contemporary fashion and indie brands - even if not, its all well worth your reading and viewing pleasure! The Asylum, which lovingly stocks brands like Fred Perry and Puma.Quoting Fashion Is Spinach:And down the street to the other side is the very pink Front Row (5 Ann Siang Road, (+65) 6224 5501) , which has an Dean & Deluca café downstairs and a boutique of fun fashions (including chic French cloth

Your Guide To Buying Jeans
2007-12-26 19:22:00
Gone are the days of bell bottoms, tapered legs and baggy jeans. These cuts flatter nobody. Today, low rise, boot cut and slightly flared styles are all the rage. But to pick a great cut, you have to find the right jeans for your body type. Most women should be wearing a lower rise jean style rather than a style where the top sits high on the waist above the belly button. Jeans that rise too high on the waist tend to create the illusion of an even bigger belly and booty, and you lose proportion to the rest of the body. However, if you have a lot of belly, be aware of super low rise jeans because they can make your sides push up and out of the top band, giving you the dreaded "muffin top."Source
