An article on Web Conferencing.
2007-03-28 17:04:00
I've been searching around the web for sites and blogs about web conferencing in general, and have found an article which is very relevant.I welcome any comments you have on this article and this subject in general.Benefits of Web-Based Conferencing I recently graduated from college, and instead of taking a corporate programming job, my friend and I started our own web development company. Everything was going great…we were both working from home and enjoying small successes. However, we soon realized that text messaging could only go so far, especially when we hired several employees. Text messaging was slow, and was “noisy” when several people were in a chatroom. We quickly needed a solution.Fortunately, we discovered web-based conferencing. Web-based conferencing has several flavors, including peer-to-peer direct conferencing, remote server hosting, and shared remote hosting. They all have their own benefits and disadvantages, which will be explained. First, general web-based

A moving experience.
2007-04-04 17:54:00
Hello All!So that's it- we have finally moved into our new office in Southgate Chambers.A very nice room it is too- plenty of space and a cracking view of the church just across the road. This is a much better working environment, unfortunately this comes at a price... four floors of stairs every day, up and down- just think of all the carbon dioxide we'll be puffing out climbing them! Still, should keep the fitness levels topped up!

A steak-out in Winchester
2007-04-13 11:21:00
On Thursday after work, I got one of those feelings- you know the type, when you think "The one thing I really could do with is a huge chunk of dead cow". Now Winchester is a strange place to get a decent bite to eat mid-evening: It goes from REALLY high class and expensive to simple mass produced pub grub and kebabs with not a great lot of quality affordable restaurants in-between. I really was struggling to find a decent steak anywhere until I walked past one our Italian restaurants and saw a T-bone on the menu in the window (always a good sign). Two glasses of wine, a starter of calamaris which were just to die for and said steak later, I was fully sated and totally satisfied. Which led me to think...why don't we do a restaurant guide for businesspeople visiting Winchester? So, No 1 on my list is PappagalloAs it was a weeknight and ,as expected because of that, the restaurant was not full, the waiting staff were polite and attentive and, once the food was ordered, it arrived in a

Feeling guilty about business travel? You're not alone!
2007-04-17 17:38:00
UK drivers suffer ‘green guilt’17 April 2007 Despite a heightened awareness of the green agenda in recent months, three-quarters of drivers climb behind the wheel every single day. But according to research from Prudential Car Insurance, this is beginning to play on our conscience with one-in-five admitting they feel guilty about driving in cities because of the potential environmental damage. The younger generation of 18-24 year olds (14 per cent) is far less bothered about their urban driving habits compared to 35-44 year olds (22 per cent). Also, more men (20 per cent) are wracked with guilt than women (18 per cent). But if we feel this bad about it – why are we still driving each and every day?Prudential’s survey reveals that six-in-ten drivers (57 per cent) reluctantly view driving in the city as a necessary evil, despite having access to a plethora of public transport links. According to drivers, the dependability of public transport is at the heart o

National Work from Home day is an initiative by Work Wise UK to encourage businesses to see the advantages of the use of flexible and home working patterns. It's not dissimilar to MATISSE (who in fact are heavily featured on the Work Wise site). I sent a quick email out yesterday to all of our Newslink members just to bring to their attention that Work from Home day is happening. Also Google Alerts fed me this article, which I feel ties in very nicely with the spirit of the day...Oxford University report reveals that homeworking can reduce global warming 17/05/2007An Oxford University report has revealed that working from home can help reduce the emission of the gases that cause global warming. The study, which pulls together research from around the world, demonstrates conclusively, that the reduction in commuting time resulting from people working at home will mean less carbon dioxide is released into the atmosph

Training doesn't have to be done by train...
2007-05-30 04:39:00
Those Google Alerts I requested using the keywords 'business', 'environment' and 'carbon footprint' have turned up a gem of an article about training and the most ecologically viable ways to go about it. This is a very well balanced article, paying off the environmental side against the practicalities and can be read here.

Computer companies aim for emission reduction targets.
2007-06-25 07:21:00
It seems that Silicon Valley is helping to lead a drive to make computers more energy efficient, cutting down on their energy usage and therefore their carbon footprint. Please enjoy this article below. Intel and Google have joined with Dell, EDS, the Environmental Protection Agency, HP, IBM, Lenovo, Microsoft, PG&E, World Wildlife Fund and more than 25 additional organizations have launched the Climate Savers Computing Initiative with the goal of saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emission s by setting aggressive new targets for energy-efficient computers and components. The group has set a 90 percent efficiency target for power supplies which the group says could save more than $5.5 billion in energy costs. Urs Holzle, a Google senior vice president, estimated that most PC power supplies currently operate at about 65 percent efficiency. The Energy Star guidelines seek to raise that level to 80 percent efficiency, but the new initiative sets targets to reach 90 percent efficie

Mapping Britain's Emissions.
2007-07-05 04:53:00
This is an article I came across in today's TimesOnline, written by Lewis Smith, their environment reporter. I've cut it down and brought out some salient points, however the map speaks for itself. The first carbon emissions map of Britain is released today to show which part of the country are responsible for pumping out the most pollution. It was put together by the carbon trust to encourage homes and businesses to cut their carbon consumption.Emissions from businesses were singled out by the trust, which believes that the sector could do more to reduce the carbon variations between towns and cities. In Brighton and Southend, the business sector is responsible for 33% of emissions, whereas in Leicester,Norwich and Sheffield that figure is 55%.Tom Delaney, The Carbon Trust's chief executive said: "Business has a critical role to play in tackling climate change as it is responsible for 40% of the CO2 emissions in the UK..."Hugh Jones, project director at the trust added: "Business h
