Let’s talk about Death over coffee
2007-04-25 10:13:08
So yesterday was an interesting day for me. Now that I have my permit Dutchie and I have to get my life here in the Netherlands going. I made out a resume the other day and started applying for work. Learned two things in this; one, even though you have the latest edition of Microsoft office not everyone else does, so change the format. I applied to five jobs; someone got back to me and said they couldn’t open my resume. So I changed the format and presto, she can open it. Now I don’t know if the other four can open it but you live and learn so I move on with the format and send more out today! The second thing I learned is this. The expat world and the jobs within this world are competitive and hard to come by. Good to know I suppose. I know I will find work, where that might be remains to be seen but I have hope. I know all will be well with the universe! It’s only been two days since I got my permit. I need some patience.Yesterday Dutchie called the insurance compa

I got this in Europe!
2007-04-24 11:51:44
When Dutchie, my mom and I were in NYC there was a picture taken of my mom and Dutchie. When we developed the picture we saw there was a sign which read ‘because saying “I got this in Europe ” never gets old.’ We got a good laugh out of it while looking at Dutchie. Saying I got her in Europe never gets old! But anyway, a while back for her birthday and Christmas we had sent her presents; clothes and jewelry that Dutchie picked out on our hunt for the perfect gifts for the family since we couldn’t be there. It was a hit! Mom got to go to work with her new clothes and jewelry and everyone asking her where she got it, “it’s from Holland!” How cool does that sound, really! So a while back my step father and mom sent us money so we could send them coffee pads and a necklace for a co-worker of hers. Coffee pads are cheaper here and better so we bought thirty bags of coffee pads and a really nice necklace for mom’s co-worker. Now her friend

Residence permits; I have mine!!
2007-04-23 11:01:44
It started Saturday morning when Dutchie got the mail. There it was! The Hilversum seal on a white envelope with my name on it! Dutchie ran upstairs screaming it’s here, it’s here! Are you kidding me? Don’t play with me was the first thing out of my mouth. I grabbed the envelope and read the contents. I was picking up my permit on Monday! We jumped around our kitchen like a bunch of school girls! The wait was finally coming to an end! My Dutch residence permit just two days away from my finger tips! Well, two days can be a really long time! Dutchie is sick so we didn’t do much this weekend which made the weekend go by just a tad slower. Not an issue mind you, tending to Dutchie is never something I mind doing. We raced the weekend away with Burnout Revenge and watched movies while Dutchie attempted to get better. Now Monday morning and Dutchie is getting ready for work while I tend to a few things around the house. My nerves are killing me! The suspense was so m

Koninginnenacht 2007!
2007-04-30 11:07:05
Koninginnedag has been a Dutch tradition for years. It started with Queen Wilhelmina on her birthday on August 31st but when Queen Julliana took the throne it was changed to her birthday on April 30th. When Queen Beatrix took the throne she left Queen’s Day on April 30th partly in honor of her mother and partly because her birthday was in January. It is mainly an outdoor even so it wouldn’t really work out well in January. The Queen and her royal family pick a town and go about the people while the people pay homage to their old traditions and show off their town. It is quite a sight let me assure you! But the festivities don’t start on konninnedag; they begin the week prior and will go on until May 5th, bevrijdingsdag, liberation day here in Holland. On the Monday before town set up their carnival rides and slot machines. All the carnival games and rides that can be squeezed into the town center along with beer stands, food stands and all sorts of fun stuff! People

First interview - I want to work!
2007-05-01 20:02:05
What an interesting day I have had and it seems it will continue into tomorrow! I had my very first interview this afternoon in Amsterdam. It was with a temp agency that works specifically with hotels. 3:30 was the time I had to be there so I started my journey at two from Hilversum. I wanted to get there early in case I got lost and it was a good thing I did too! I get into Amsterdam at around 2:30 and go to the information desk to find out which side of this large central station the buses are located. Just go out the door behind me and make a left, you cannot miss them he states. I make my way through a maze of German, Dutch and English speaking people all around me to the warm sun and glance to my left. Just after the construction is in fact a row of busses coming and going. I am an hour early so I thought I would have a cigarette. The mix of languages is astounding! Tourist season has hit! I hear British, American and Australian while they try and figure out which tram will take t

Koninginnedag 2007!
2007-05-01 09:43:10
It was gorgeous weather for the Netherlands Koninginnedag and everyone came out to celebrate the Queen’s birthday! It is the day where the Dutch let all their hair down, dance to live music and paint everything orange. Heineken flows while the masses shop around the streets filled with people on blankets selling everything they can find in their attics and cupboards during the free market hours. Carnival rides and games, children playing their instruments to the crowds and an old traditional market shows everyone how Holland used to do things and sells their handmade crafts. It really is an odd way to celebrate a royal birthday for I would have pictured a formal banquette with all the celebrity and royalty attending in their best and the people of the nation would have virtually nothing to do with the affair but it is so far from that! This year Queen Beatrix and her family were in Den Bosch for the celebration. Carnival games, old traditions were on display and the royal family

Dodenherdenking
2007-05-04 11:33:14
Here in the Netherlands is Remembrance of the Dead today. It is a day where they remember those who died in World War 2. After 1961, it became a day to remember all who have died in peacekeeping missions as well as World War 2. On the Dam Square in Amsterdam Queen Beatrix, Prince Willem Alexander and Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende will place wreaths on the war memorial and tonight at 8pm there will be a two-minute moment of silence all over the country. Waalsdorpervlakte, near Den Haag will have their own ceremony as well to remember the resistance fighters executed during the war. Tomorrow is bevrijdingsdag where they celebrate the liberation from Nazi occupation largely due to Canadian troops. A holiday celebrated every five years until 1990 where they made it an annual national holiday. I have made some observations that are interesting to me on the topic of World War 2. For one thing, the feel is different here when such holidays are recognized. America has its Veterans Day a

Mingling with the natives
2007-05-03 10:41:34
As I venture further into society here and mingle with the natives, I have come to interesting findings along the way. I can recall a time when I was living on Long Island, New York and me and some friends were driving through Bay Shore when our car died. Mind you, this was the age of beepers and not many of us as teenagers and young adults had cell phones yet. We were at a corner with a 7-11 so we walked over and asked the man behind the counter if we could use his phone to call for some help; our car had died after all. No, use the payphone, its outside. There was three of us and wouldn’t you know it, all we had were five and ten dollar bills. Could you break a five for us so we can get some quarters? Nope, you need to buy something. Therefore, we bought something to get some change and called for help. The battery died so the tow truck jumped the car and we were on our merry way.Now let us fast forward a few years and into Holland. Dutchie did a very silly thing a couple of mo

Stories and what they mean today.
2007-05-07 12:53:31
Dirk was co-owner of a hat shop, Juliana is a housekeeper and nanny, and they had two children by the start of World War 2. Once Germany had invaded the Netherlands, they began to put into policy the same restrictions on Jews as in Germany. Families with only one partner that was Jewish were not necessarily subject to deportation to camps or relocated to Jewish ghettos. While this left them in a semi safe place, they were still in occupied Holland and had to abide by the new law of the land. Curfews, food rations and coupons, Juliana still had to wear her start. They also had to deal with the new laws that stated that Jews only be allowed work in ‘Jewish’ shops. This became an issue with Dirk as his partner was Jewish and Dirk had to let him go according to the Germans. When Dirk refused, he was arrested and imprisoned at Scheveningen where placed in a 2 meter block cell. He received hay for a bed and a bucket for a toilet. From there Dirk was transferred to a camp where Di

World War 2 tourism in Holland
2007-05-10 12:46:03
My father is a World War 2 buff and is coming to Holland in September. I was surfing the net in hopes of finding places throughout the country that appeal to his historical nature. My have I hit a jackpot of information for him yet where in the world would I start! Along my internet travels, I came across a website dedicated entirely to places of relevance to the war, bunkers, hide-a-ways and museums galore. I can take him to Amsterdam, Arnhem and any city having any significance but there has to be something I can also teach him. He wants things to stimulate and make his studies real. In Amsterdam, the Anne Frank House is always popular. You can take a historical canal ride through Amsterdam and it makes routine stops to her house. Then there is the Holandsche Schouwburg (Dutch theater) where many Jews found themselves before transportation to a camp. There is the Verzetsmuseum, which is dedicated to the Dutch Resistance. In the province of Gelderland, we have Arnhem and Operation Mar

American mentality
2007-05-09 11:18:17
What does it mean to be American , un-American? Is the US the greatest country in the world? After reading a comment sent to me about my piece Opinions and Judgments, it struck me to really consider the comment and answer some questions I had stirring inside of me. What does it mean to be American to me or to anyone else for that matter? Being born on American soil gives us this claim but is it also a mentality we have? Living elsewhere and learning the behaviors and inner workings of another country I realize that part of being America is the mentality we have, the personalities and behaviors we acquire along the way. My behaviors and personality differ from those around me; our perception of the world varies. Take for example, Natalie from the Dixie Chicks, who voiced her embarrassment and unhappiness towards the president and the war. The backlash from expressing her opinion was massive and uncalled for. It was her right as an American to utilize her freedom of speech. She used her r

Opinions and Judgments
2007-05-08 11:20:35
Recently I had a conversation about America and my view on it; am I getting all the headlines, do I know what is really going on? Do I really only pay attention to the politics of Europe now, ignoring my own country? Is it all about Europe and to hell with my own country? I wanted to ignore the question all together I must admit. I do care about what goes on in my own country; I make sure I stay on top of what is going on. It is not an easy thing to say to hell with my own country. Just the thought makes me feel as though I am ripping out half of my being. Yet the conversation came to a place where I could have loyalty to only one country, where did my heart really lie? Is that really the case; that my heart is only big enough as to have love for one country only? It seemed shallow to think so. I write on what I see, I write about the differences I experience and the things I learn. If I write about something that one or two Americans do not like does that mean I am ignorant to the way

Interviews and Sofi-numbers
2007-05-10 15:07:36
Well, today is going to be a short one as I am a busy girl today. I first must take the train to Utrecht where I will finally get my hands on my sofi-number! That is at 10:45 but I do not know how long that will take. Then, and this is just as cool if not cooler, I have an interview with an agency at 3:00 in Amsterdam for a job as a Customer Account Manager! I am so excited! Since I don’t know how long it will take in Utrecht I might just take the train to Amsterdam instead of swinging back to Hilversum first. Either way I am prepared! I got the phone call this afternoon from a representative at hays.nl where they stated they received my resume and application and liked what they saw. I have experience in stock, customer service and feel this would definitely work in my favor! It requires excellent English in both written and speech and being a native I am set in that. He asked me a few questions and then asked when I would be available. I explained I was picking up my sofi-numbe

US healthcare inefficient
2007-05-16 10:52:42
In Yahoo news, there was an article on health care in the US verses four other countries done in this survey. Germany, Canada, Britain and Australia all have better coverage but with less money. It is well known that America has ridiculous prices, poor coverage with approximately forty million uninsured. “The U.S. health care system ranks last compared with five other nations on measures of quality, access, efficiency, equity, and outcomes,” the non-profit group which studies health care issues said in a statement. Many people get their medications now via internet through Canada because the cost of prescriptions is so high that many people cannot afford the very thing that makes them well. I had a conversation with a friend the other day from America about coverage and payment when it comes to health insurance. This person informed me they pay $280 every two weeks for health insurance. I gasped when I heard this! Now that I am insured, I pay €150 a month and because Du

Governor Spitzer, Gay Marriage and an article stating it a hoax.
2007-05-15 11:12:16
I recently read something on NY Governor Eliot Spitzer and his legislature for same sex marriage in New York; Governor Eliot Spitzer's same sex marriage hoax. According to the writer, there was no law in New York that denies the right to marriage for gay couples. In fact, the writer goes to say that the law is not gender specific and the only thing standing in the way is in the Department of Health where they state it is between one man and one woman. Could it really be that simple? Governor Spitzer could simply change the wording in the Department of Health documents pertaining to marriage by executive order and same sex couples can marry? No legislature necessary; can it be? There was a letter written from the Attorney General’s office to Darrin B Derosia from the City of Cohoes in NY and Peter Graham from the town of Olive in NY back in 2004 addressing this very issue. It gave an overview of the Domestic Relations Law, formal requirements, voidable marriages, annulments and

After my interview
2007-05-14 11:27:48
Friday was a hectic but great day. Hustling around gave me a sense of productivity and accomplishment. Having to run to Utrecht back to Hilversum then go to Amsterdam back to Hilversum made my day busy, at times a little chaotic but missed. I miss the feeling of having something to do and somewhere to go. I want to be the person who multi tasks and has a schedule to keep until the day’s end. I received my sofi-number with no fuss and headed back to Hilversum to do some errands before heading to Amsterdam for my interview . I admit I was nervous. This was a position that would mean a lot to Dutchie and I. It would give me an opportunity to work, be successful and productive. I went through the specs of the company when I received them on Thursday but also on the train so it would stay fresh in my head. As is customary here in Holland, companies go through agencies. A recruiter interviews you and assesses whether you would work out for their client. So a recruiter I interviewed wit

The new immigration plan
2007-05-18 17:01:49
While watching the news today something got Dutchie infuriated and I cannot fault her either. It was the new immigration plan to allow undocumented workers in the US prior to January 2007 immediate authorization to work. They would have to pay a five thousand dollar penalty plus the costs of paperwork and processing. There are stipulations about leaving and coming back. There is a process where they work for two years, leave for a year, come back for two years and do it twice more, a points merit system. Heads of households have to go back to their native country within eight years with guarantees of coming back. There are a few different ways to enter according to new policy. It is a 380-page plan so the details are far from all here but there would be a way to make these illegal’s, legal despite the hardships of leaving and paying the fine, which can be paid over time according to CNN. I, as you are aware, took the legal way to gaining residence to the Netherlands. Rules that

Apologies
2007-05-18 10:25:16
There are days where I simply lack the ability to write. I don’t know what to write or how to write it. Today is one such day and I am fearful. My absence yesterday is not helping and with so much going on, I am finding it rather difficult to concentrate. It has been a mentally exhausting week; Momma Dutchie is in the hospital in Den Haag. We are over an hour away so we have only been able to visit her on Saturday to Sunday and then Wednesday to Thursday; not nearly as much as Dutchie and I would like but with money tight and the distance between us, we simply cannot hop in the car and drive every morning to Den Haag. The distance only adds to the already exhausting, painful week. Momma Dutchie is sick and not much that they can do for her. My thoughts rest on her and with Dutchie who is desperately trying to hang on. My heart feels heavy and my stomach turns and not much wants to settle. I want so much to be there for Dutchie and Momma Dutchie, be of some use but what is there t

Madness in the morning and my herbal help
2007-05-21 10:42:28
My house is in shambles right now. The covers are off the couch cushions, laundry started, the bed looks worse than the couch! Actually, the whole thing looks like I ran through it like a tornado. I am tired and antsy and it feels that no amount of coffee is helping me to wake up! I do not even know what it is I want to write! I go from listening to Justin Timberlake to Avril to Linkin Park and Dixie Chicks! My home needs straightening from my mornings mess with the laundry, beds sheets and couch cushions. There are moments where I am ready to cry my eyes out and other moments where I am busy and ignoring any impulse to indulge my emotions. This is my first day without a cigarette, can you tell? I am pondering a fourth cup of coffee while I tend to my allergy pills, vitamins and then cranberry pills and Echinacea because you guessed it; that time of the month had to hit today of all days. My body screams Midol yet I do not have any and I say this with a pitifully sad face! Midol is g

Holland’s obesity issue
2007-05-25 03:51:39
Something interesting caught my attention this morning as I read the news; 75% of adults in the Netherlands are overweight and its growing in children, one in every eight is overweight. What? Where? Holland ’s cities and towns are designed very different from those in America. Almost every neighborhood throughout the country has a little shopping center with a grocery store, pharmacy and a handful of other small shops. Each town and city has at least one major center in which you can find everything and anything. This is also where you are going to find the major markets too. Unlike America, you don’t have to drive fifteen thirty minutes to get food or clothes it’s all relatively close to where you either only drive five minutes or do what I do, walk. I live five minutes from the center of Hilversum with everything I need within a ten-minute walk from front door to store. I grab my grocery bag(s) and off I go. It gives me a chance to catch some air, get some exercise a

American Idol, Dancing with the Stars; it is all the same!
2007-05-24 07:50:46
The new American Idol is… How would I know? Why would I care? According to CNN, 17-year-old Jordin Sparks and has quite the voice. Yet I don’t know this you see. I have my own Idol’s show to watch in Dutch! Few years back we had this person Jim Bakkum who came in second at 15 years of age in ‘Idol’s’! I personally fell for the boy when he did our version of Dancing with the Stars (2005) with his English partner Julie Fryer. My goodness, Dutchie and I were voting for them! I did love that show; cheering at the edge of my seat as Jim and Julie danced away! We started to watch the second season but we stopped watching. We simply forgot it was on. Here is where I get a little lost. If I type in American Idol or just Idol there are thousands of pages to search through. It is in the top ten of blog pages and tags. It is just another reality show and people all over the world are hooked. Why? In our version simply titled Idols people here are just as crazed. It

Berlin Germany tourism and history
2007-05-23 05:11:17
Germany has been up to a lot as of late when it comes to their World War 2 history. They do not want to hide the things they have done, rather they seem to want to embrace it. A couple of months ago I read about the underground tunnels existing under Berlin that were used during WW2 as well as the Cold War and how they want to open as many as they can for tourism, to finally see what is really under Berlin. Roughly, three hundred tunnels and bunkers exist under Berlin out of a thousand or so. The Holocaust memorial is becoming an even bigger attraction than they imagined. Opened two years ago it is over two thousand concrete blocks covering the space of three football fields. Even with the slight growth in neo-Nazism in Germany over the years, vandalism isn’t something they contend with much to their surprise. It also contains a database of over 3.5 million known names of those who died under the regime. Then there is the place where Hitler’s bunker used to be, about 100 me

Integration rants
2007-05-22 07:53:52
When they tell you they want you to integrate into your new society they neglect to tell you that the help they offer comes at a snail’s pace! I would love to lay out €500 – 1000 or more for Dutch language classes so that I would actually have a better shot of getting a job but here we are. I looking for work and getting rejections because of my Dutch and the government saying integrate with no integration in sight! You just have to love how governments work. By going through the town of Hilversum for my integration I can have it cost me nothing or close to nothing for my classes. That also means I will be certified in my new language and a certificate to prove as much. This would greatly improve my chances of work. The government is so good at saying we have to do this and we have to do that as expats yet are, for some reason, unable to give us that which they say we need! Why is that? Now I know it does not matter that this is the Dutch government, this could be the US gove

The western experience, Dutch style!
2007-05-28 04:46:12
This weekend in Almere-Buiten was Western Experience and since I had never been, Dutch ie thought it best if I finally experience what she had been telling me about for years now. I admit, I was picturing cowboy hats, wranglers and lots of country music with line dancing and I wasn’t disappointed, I saw plenty of that but I got a bit more than I had originally thought. The definition of western experience as defined by the average Dutch person today: The American country and Midwestern lifestyle. Cowboys and Indians, Dr. Quinn medicine woman, country music, country line dancing and just line dancing. There are cowboy hats, chaps, raccoon tails, Native American garb and American beer! Dutchie is a lover of country music, she also used to line dance as well, competing and even taking home a metal, Benelux ‘99 2nd Place Country Walkin’ Female Open Newcomer! Go Dutchie! Yet Dutchie doesn’t do this anymore and there is a really good reason as I saw yesterday. She danc

Back to Amsterdam I go!
2007-05-31 03:26:22
Well yesterday, I received two phone calls. One was for an interview today at one for a restaurant on the main road that rests between the station and the Dam Square, which I am eagerly awaiting my time to leave. The other was with a job agency wanting to have a phone interview with me, to assess my CV and me and see what it is they can do for me. The agency specializes in individuals who don’t speak Dutch. Abroad Experience, Undutchables, xpatjobs.com and a few others that specialize in expats looking for work. When I received the call the woman spoke to me in English; she started the conversation in that language. This is definitely a plus in my eyes! Therefore, my ventures in Amsterdam have landed me an interview! I sit here in anticipation! My eagerness to work is causing me to jump out of my own skin. My need to work evident in everyday activities; we live in a world where two incomes are needed, it doesn’t matter where you live. Dutchie has co-workers looking around a

Job searching walking through Amsterdam
2007-05-30 04:33:31
I am struggling and am beginning to understand why so many expats get depressed. I slowly understand why the IND feels it is necessary for expats to have coverage for depression. It’s frustrating out there. I went to Amsterdam via train to look for work. Before that, I stopped at the sociale zaken to ask about my integration. Yes, they have my name on file and know I am waiting ever so patiently. The most important thing is that they know I am here, is what I am told. No, the most important thing is that I am actually integrated. They demand I integrate, speak Dutch and basically disappear into society. Demand something yet not come through with it. It has been over a month and I am told they will get to me as soon as they can. In the mean time, I am not getting the help I need and am suffering for it. I went to Tempo-Team, a job agency, to see about some work. They cannot help because my Dutch is not good enough. They deal with production jobs, assembly line and packaging, plus

Russia's Gay Pride never got a chance
2007-05-29 03:24:11
On May 14th organizers of Moscow Gay Pride put in official papers announcing their peaceful gay rights demonstration scheduled for May 27th; it never got a chance to take place. Saturday there was a march ‘Russia n March’ where about 200 people showed up to protest the next day’s events. Slogans such as “Russia without Sodomites,” “Down with Russophobes,” “For Russia without Perverts” and others. For the second time the Russian government denied the request to have a gay pride demonstration and for a second time the gay community went ahead with it anyway. Last year was a large turnout but this year the cops were ready having the whole area blocked off and arrested anyone pulling up for the event. Protesters and hooligans were ready with spit, rocks and eggs to throw at everyone one who showed up. Cops arrested prominent individuals and gay officials and many kept going, never stopping after seeing what was taking place. Hundreds of

The Big Donor Show
2007-06-03 03:31:53
It is rare when the Dutch make international news but when they do, it’s because they do something outrageous and controversial. How about a reality show where there is a dying woman who wants to donate a kidney before she dies and three contestants sit in anticipation as to who will live a long and healthy life with her kidney; that’s pretty out there don’t you think? Lisa, 37, was dying from an inoperable brain tumor and had roughly 6 months to live. She does have an organ donor card so when she dies her organs will be used but she wants to do it while she is alive; her kidney. Based on histories, stories and conversations she has three people to choose from out of 25 she originally started with but eliminated for a variety of reasons. Now just like any reality show just as Idols or Dancing with the Stars, you call in or text your vote to see who will win! People actually sms’d or called to vote for one of the three based on the stories they were hearing. Dutc

Ik heb een baan!
2007-06-01 03:03:02
Well, my adventures in Amsterdam on Tuesday paid off! I had a call on Wednesday about my CV I had left with a restaurant on Damrak; it is between Amsterdam Central and the Dam Square. They wanted an interview with me and wanted to know if I could come back to Amsterdam at one. I admit I was nervous. I have been on a couple of interviews now, one did not work out, and the other is still up in the air somewhere. I was nervous. I was actually a half hour early getting into Amsterdam I was that nervous! So I ended up going in ten minutes early, I couldn’t take the wait any longer! Well, the outcome, I was in there for 7 minutes or so and walked out with employment! A little Italian restaurant, cozy and fairly busy and I am going to be working there! Oh the relief I felt walking down those steps and onto the streets of Amsterdam! Finally, I can contribute to the household finances, finally, not all the weight will be put on Dutchie. Instantly I called Dutchie to tell of my grand news

First day of work
2007-06-05 08:00:57
My feet are a tad sore, my head feels a bit drained but I finally put it a good eight hours of work today! It isn’t a bad job either, I have to get used to standing about on concrete all day again, Every two hours there is a coffee break and the hours just flew by for me! My goodness it felt good! Before I realized it was three in the afternoon! I did have a bit of an issue though today. Completely forgetting my wrist and its limitations I decided to pick up two mail containers without thinking of the consequences. Let me tell you how I am thinking of them now! Dutchie helped me when we got home with it. I must remember my brace to support it for tomorrow! I had a bit of an issue when it came to language but I fear it might be my own doing in most cases. I froze up when someone spoke to me! While I understood and made known that understanding I didn’t state it in Dutch, rather I just sort of pointed. Not a good first impression I admit. I have been stressed over it since an
